BOOKMAKERS TRIM ROSBERG’S ODDS FOLLOWING HOME GP WIN In the wake of Nico Rosberg’s fourth win of the season...

f there is a consolation in light of the Mercedes-Benz blitz, it is that the squad is not forging a bigger gap over the field. Red Bull, while the only rival to hoist a win over Mercedes this season, continue to show improving pace through Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel. Williams too are slowly hatching some decent strategies with Valtteri Bottas facing a fourth straight podium at the Hungaroring which is reflective of the Grove team’s pace. Ferrari seem to have stagnated with Kimi Raikkonen continuing to struggle and Fernando Alonso extracting what can only be seen as decent results while flattering his car’s ability. One thing that cannot be argued is neither Red Bull nor Williams would seem to be at a level yet where they can launch an assault in an outright fight on the track all things being equal. Both squads need several factors to work in their favour if there is a chance of the three-pointed star operation coming unstuck as was the case in Canada. But then again Bottas did manage to hold off a

charging Hamilton from nabbing a Mercedes quinella at Hockenheim. In defence Hamilton did have to come from 20th and avoid all sorts of trouble in the interim, none-the-least contact with Raikkonen and Jenson Button in separate incidents. Even so, there was no capitulation by Bottas when the heat was on in the closing kilometres of a bruising grand prix.

Bookmakers trim Rosberg’s odds following home GP win I

n the wake of Nico Rosberg’s fourth win of the season, the German has shortened from his quote prior to the Hockenheim race. Rosberg is into $2.50 (or 6-4 in the old parlance) while his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton has eased slightly to $1.65 (from $1.55) following his troubles last weekend. Courtesy of the ever improving Williams outfit, Valtteri Bottas has come into third favouritism at $17, trimmed up by $2 from his German GP quote. Red Bull ace Daniel Ricciardo has remained static at $21 while Felipe Massa, who has failed to finish the last two races, has eased to $21 from $19. Sebastien Vettel, despite a rare triumph over the brilliant Ricciardo when fourth at Hockenheim, has lengthened from $26 to $29. Perhaps the biggest fluctuation of a driver who is well within his means (not necessarily the car) of winning is Fernando Alonso who is now a $51 chance, a $10

www.speedcafe.com

better quote than before last weekend. While it was $101 the rest of the field a week ago, it is now $151 for the rest.

There remains incredible value outside a Mercedes win which as Ricciardo proved in Montreal is not an impossible situation.

BOTTAS:

Finland’s new flying star V

altteri Bottas has emerged as Finland’s next potential world champion. Coming off a third successive podium when he finished second behind Nico Rosberg at Hockenheim, Bottas demonstrated that he is hungry for more success. Bottas, who emerged on the Williams radar even before his success in the GP3 series in 2011, is enjoying the best F1 form of his career. He showed tremendous maturity to maintain his pace with a carefully thought out battle plan at Hockenheim when it looked like the hard-charging Lewis Hamilton would take the wind out of his sails and finish second. Bottas said: “To keep a Mercedes behind at the end of the race was promising showing that it is possible, and the car is very strong. “The engineers shared a lot of information with me about the tyres and where Hamilton was and that teamwork was the key to the good result.” The 24-year-old hinted that the ever improving Williams outfit are slowly but surely proving to be competitive against the benchmark Mercedes team. Williams’ performance engineering head Rob Smedley, drew plenty of encouragement from the Hockenheim result as Bottas again took up the cudgels

in the wake of Felipe Massa’s second crash on the opening lap in as many races. “We have overtaken Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship which is the reward for our continuing improvements,” Smedley said. “We just need that bad luck for Felipe to stop as our aim now is to get both cars on the podium. Now fifth in the title hunt, Bottas has done a lot to see Williams is leading the fight to take it to the superior Mercedes team. As the flame seems to have waned

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO

on his countryman and former world champion Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari, Bottas’ Hockenheim effort sees him move to another level. Bottas did a splendid job in tyre management and despite coming under serious fire from Hamilton in the shadows of the chequered flag he managed to outfox and out-pace the Silver Arrows driver. And despite not having Massa finish in each of the last two races, Bottas has helped lift the Grove operation to third in the constructor’s rankings, pushing the Maranello squad back to fourth.

Hungarian Grand Prix 2004 ™

After being modified the year before, the Hungaroring proved that not much had changed when it came to the dominance of one Michael Schumacher. Schumacher had taken the pole position narrowly from his Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello and then proceeded to lead each of the 70 tours of the 4.3km circuit. It was widely regarded as one of the least entertaining races in history as Schumacher put on a clinic. In the end Schumacher took home the perfect record of pole, the fastest

race lap and the lead of every lap, a domination which was not repeated again until Fernando Alonso at the 2010 Singapore GP. Also of significance, the victory stood as the seventh consecutive win for Schumacher which equalled record of Italy’s 1952-1953 world champion Alberto Ascari. The 2004 Hungarian GP was also the race which saw the former NewmanHaas CART champion, Cristiano da Matta lose his seat at the Toyota team, replaced by Ricardo Zonta. All-In-One Security
