India is the next destination on the Formula 1 calendar and while the country is relatively new to hosting international motor racing, the Buddh International Circuit is set to be etched into the history books this weekend by crowning a champion. Red Racing’s Sebastian Vettel only requires to finish fifth or better to secure the 2013 championship and in doing so he will join the exclusive club of just three drivers to win four world titles. The German has won the last five races on the bounce and is in the form of his life, rendering this year’s title race to be wrapped up this weekend as a forgone conclusion. It is becoming increasingly difficult to remember a race which doesn’t end with the 26-year-old celebrating on the top step of the podium. The statistics back this up too with Vettel only finishing outside the top five on seven occasions since he joined Red Bull in 2009, a staggering achievement in itself. The last time he did so was at Brazil last year where he did just enough to secure his third title. However, one of the factors that keeps millions glued to their television sets every fortnight is you can never be absolutely certain what will happen come raceday. With Lotus fast becoming the form team, Mark Webber coming very close to victory at Suzuka and Vettel not needing to win, we may see a new face take chequered flag this weekend. While the title race is almost certainly over, the news has continued to flow. Teenage Russian sensation Daniil Kvyat will jump from GP3 to Formula One after being unveiled as Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement at Toro Rosso for next season. In other news, McLaren has bolstered its design team by acquiring the services of Adrian Newey’s Red Bull understudy Peter Prodromou. The man, who has played a significant role in Red Bull’s success, will join the Woking team as head of aerodynamics at the end of next year. Speculation regarding the future of Scotland’s Paul Di Resta at Force India is growing too with the drivers‘ manager revealing he may lose his seat to a pay driver in 2014. While we ready ourselves for the Indian Grand Prix, it is important to note the motorsport fraternity has been rocked with the recent tragic losses of ex-Formula 1 test driver Maria De Villota and Porsche Supercup racer Sean Edwards. Please spare a thought this weekend for whom we have lost.

Round 16 - India I Cover Story
Vettel: The greatest four time world champion? Speedcafe.com’s Tom Howard takes a look at how the Red Bull racer compares against the sport’s existing four time world champions Sebastian Vettel is on the verge of becoming the youngest ever four-time world champion, setting the bar at an unprecedented height for the modern day Formula 1 driver. Love him or loathe him the 26-year-old’s record is hard to ignore. A fifth place or higher finish in this weekend’s Indian Grand Prix will ensure he will become only

the fourth driver to win four or more titles and only the third to win four consecutive championships. Making comparisons between Formula 1’s four time world champions is a difficult task as the sport has changed so much since its maiden season in 1950, but it does offer some perspective of Vettel’s achievements and future career path.

Round 16 - India I Cover Story
The first driver to achieve the hugely impressive feat of four world titles was Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, who dominated F1’s first decade. Statistically Fangio, who five titles in just an eight year career, is the greatest and most successful four time champion boasting a staggering race win percentage of 46%. Granted Formula 1 seasons consisted half of today’s calendar but with three times the danger during the 1950s, Fangio’s stats ensure he will forever be one of the sport’s true greats. However, Vettel does overshadow him in two areas. The German has accrued his four titles in just six full Formula 1 seasons, which is a full year quicker then the great Fangio. Achieving the feat at the tender age of just 26 also ensures he is likely to be the youngest to do so for some conceivable time. Alain Prost, “The Professor” is another of Formula 1’s benchmarks. The Frenchman was only active in the sport for 13 years but he certainly left his mark, recording four titles stretching from the turbo era of the mid 1980s to the active suspension era of the early 1990s. While his bitter rivalry with Ayrton Senna is arguably the most abiding memory of Prost’s career, it can be easy to forget his achievements. The Professor also boasts a record that Vettel has yet to match.
also amazingly has a higher race win percentage than Prost, who impressively won a quarter of all the races he started. Vettel’s boyhood hero Michael Schumacher continues to hold the title of Formula 1’s most successful driver with a mesmerising seven world championships and 91 race wins, more than any other driver. Despite his disappointing three year comeback with Mercedes which ended last year, the German proved in his 19 year Formula 1 career he could form championship winning teams at both Benetton and Ferrari and dominate the sport for a sustained period of time. In many ways Vettel fits Schumacher’s mould more closely than either Fangio or Prost and by looking at the Red Bull driver’s career so far he is on course to emulate his hero. If Schumacher decided against his winless comeback with Mercedes, he would hold a higher race win percentage than Vettel, but at the moment they both have won 30% of all races entered. While Schumacher has more titles and race wins, Vettel has achieved his championships at a younger age than his fellow countryman. He has already won more than a third of Schumacher’s race wins in just seven years and if he continues his upward trajectory that record will be challenged.
To label a driver the greatest four time world champion is difficult for a number of reasons and variables. Many experts would put together significant cases for Fangio, Prost and Schumacher, arguing Formula 1 was more dangerous and difficult due to changes in rules, regulations and technology during their career time frames. With Vettel there is the school of thought his world titles have come easy and he has not be tested fully, virtue of having the best car for the last four years at Red Bull. To some extent this is true but a driver can only work with the machinery he is given and he still has to go out there and do the job time after time. And Formula 1 has also proved countless times that the best car more often than not wins the title. In order to silence all the critics and experts he will have to win a world title at a different team or in a slower car to show his true class, like Prost and Schumacher achieved previously. But it is important not to forget Vettel is the youngest to achieve the feat and has done so in the least amount of seasons. It is impossible to predict the future but in years to come Sebastian Vettel could well be regarded as the greatest of them all.
Of Prost’s four titles, three of them were achieved in different teams (McLaren, Ferrari and Williams) which represents an altogether different challenge for a driver. To build a title winning car and personnel around you at one team is a tough enough, but to do this at three teams is a hugely impressive feat. However, where Vettel shines through yet again is his age and speed of accruing his four world championships. He

Round 16 - India I Track Details
BUDDH INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT Technical preview with the Lotus F1 team
THE CAR Rear wing Simulations show that the Buddh International Circuit is comparable to a Suzuka or Barcelona level of downforce; similar to that used in Korea which is a couple of steps away from maximum load. Brakes There are significant braking demands at turns one, four and five but overall it isn’t a hard circuit for brakes. There is a long straight for the brakes to cool before turn 4 and they will also not be unduly stressed heading into Turn 1. Suspension There are no significant bumps or kerbs that require special attention here. Good change of direction in the medium speed corners is essential so suspension would tend to be at the stiffer end of the range.
sufficient to eradicate understeer, particularly for the turn 10-11 high speed corners where it could cost a lot of lap time. Engine The first part of the circuit requires good top speed and power since 75% of this sector consists of straights. The second part of the track is twistier and requires a more driveable and responsive engine. The resultant engine requirements will be similar to Korea in this respect. Dust and grit from the surface can also be ingested into the airbox so filters will be regularly inspected to avoid blockages.
THE CIRCUIT Pitlane The pit lane is one of the longest in Formula 1 at over 600 metres with a notable influence on pit stop strategy as a result.
Tyres Pirelli has allocated the medium and soft tyres this time around. Previously the hard tyre was brought with the soft, presenting a challenge for the team.
Turns 4 approach With speeds of around 320kph attained, the longest straight on the track leads into Turn 4; a corner which is quite wide to assist with overtaking. It’s also the heaviest braking point on the circuit – with cars going from 320-90kph in 140 metres – creating aspect which should assist passing.
Front wing Front wing downforce needs to be
Turns 8 - 9 A fast right to left chicane, turns 8-9 require

a quick change of direction from the car. Turn 7 - 13 Turns 7-13 are quite long, sweeping corners, relying on good downforce and balance from the car. Turn 8 is the fastest point – taken at almost 300kph – before heading to the slower turns 9 and 10. Overall quite a satisfying section of race track for the drivers. Turns 10 - 11 The never-ending turn 10-11 combo is similar to Turkey’s Turn 8; long and fast, with energy building and compounding in the tyres. Turn 10 is uphill and heads straight into Turn 11, which combined to form one of the most exciting parts of the circuit. This section is overlooked by a grandstand with a capacity of 13,000. Through this long corner, understeer is the enemy and car setup is focused on countering that. Turn 13 - 14 Turns 13-14 form another section requiring good change of direction. Here the car needs to be stiff to ensure receptive response. Turn 16 Turn 16 is another wider section of track which promotes overtaking opportunities.

rustration levels will be hitting new peaks among the Formula 1 paddock as Sebastian Vettel proved unbeatable even though he endured a scrappy drive to victory in the Japanese Grand Prix two weeks ago. By his own extremely high standards Vettel will admit his drive at Suzuka was a messy one but despite this, nobody was able to capitalise. He was certainly pushed hard by both Romain Grosjean and team mate Mark Webber but the end result remained all too similar with the German national anthem blearing at the end of the race. Vettel may have won the previous two Indian Grand Prix and is the favourite for glory this weekend, but the fact he
only needs to finish fifth to wrap up the championship, could open the door for someone to end his five race winning run. Webber emerged as Vettel’s closest challenger last time out and if the race were a few laps longer the outcome could have been different. Bouyed by how close he came to toppling the 26-year-old, the likeable Australian is a smart bet to star this weekend. Lotus have become serious contenders for victories in recent weeks with Grosjean fronting the cause strongly in Japan, finishing third after leading the race. Both the Frenchman and Kimi Raikkonen could certainly upset the natural order the sport has been accustomed to in recent weeks. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has proved he is
the very definition of a racer this season. The Spaniard has dragged the very best from his often unfancied Ferrari and has a knack of forcing himself into the race when qualifying proves his car is adrift of the front runners. He will have conceded the title to Vettel in his mind but come raceday, don’t be surprised to see the fiery two-time champion roaring up the grid. Sauber have certainly accrued the title of midfield kings in recent weeks embarrassing the riches of McLaren. It is still mathematically possible for them to overtake one of the sport’s giants in the constructors title race, which could provide a interesting sub plot this weekend.
