Suzuka spirit
The iconic Suzuka circuit in Japan has decided many Formula 1 world championships over the years and it could be about to crown another champion this weekend.

It’s sweeping turns have provided drivers with another true test of skill and in many ways it is the perfect arena for a title to be fought over. Just the mention of the word ‘Suzuka‘ will quickly flood any F1 fan with memories of some truly epic encounters in the land of the rising sun. In the late 1980s it was the home of several nail biting and often controversial clashes between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. Also, who could forget the emotional scenes of 1996 when Damon Hill finally got over the hurdle after coming so close for many seasons. Whether you like him or loathe him you cannot deny Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel has been the stand out driver of 2013. To add to his growing list of accolades, the German could become the youngest quadruple world champion in the sport’s history, which is a sobering thought in itself. After destroying the field in the previous four races it would take a brave man to bet against him. A victory at Suzuka would secure his fourth consecutive title if Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso finishes lower than eighth in Sunday’s race, ensuring this contest will be the Spaniard’s most important of the season regarding his own title aspirations. This very notion could be the catalyst to produce arguably the biggest reaction from the fiery Alonso, who no doubt has a point to prove. There is a strong argument surrounding just how good a driver Vettel is and whether he deserves to be ranked alongside such greats as Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. But at the end of the day all you can say he clearly is one of the best of the current crop and he has made the most of some extremely well built and designed cars. While Suzuka is renowned for producing great races, could this be circuit to bring McLaren some much needed joy? The team are celebrating their 50th anniversary but other than that impressive milestone it has been a year to forget for one of Formula 1’s powerhouses. On paper Suzuka has been one of their happiest of hunting grounds with nine race wins more than any other team at the circuit. It would perhaps be fitting if they could muster one more in Japan especially with their new relationship with Honda secured. Like Spa, Silverstone and Monza, Suzuka is one of the last truly challenging tracks on the calendar and anyone who tames the venue let alone secures a title here certainly deserves it.

Fifty years of McLaren From one man’s vision to F1 powerhouse
T
hey may be enduring one of their worst seasons on record, but 2013 represents a hugely impressive milestone for McLaren as they celebrate their 50th anniversary. If founder Bruce McLaren was alive today I think even he would be shocked just how much his team has achieved since first forming his vision to design, create and race his own cars back in the early 1960s.
attention of the motor racing fraternity. Piloting a Cooper Climax, he finished second behind Jack Brabham at the 1958 New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore. His performance caught the attention of the race winner and the second place finish also saw McLaren claim the New Zealand International Grand Prix Association’s “Driver to Europe” scholarship. This prize and rapport with Brabham would ignite his motor racing career.
McLaren, who arrived in the UK virtually on his own, joined the Cooper works team and he enjoyed seven years with the marque. Despite recording several Grand Prix victories, by 1963, the son of a car mechanic, aged just 26 decided to embark on a new challenge by forming his own team based in a Surrey warehouse in the UK, with the aid of American entrepreneur Teddy Mayer. Bruce continued to race for Cooper up until 1965 but when the

Few would have predicted that a New Zealander thousands of miles from home would go on to create one of Formula 1’s most successful teams, but 182 Grand Prix wins, 8 Con-structors titles and 12 Drivers‘ championships is more than enough proof that McLaren have become one of the most iconic names in motor racing. The team’s origins emanate from New Zealand when Auckland-born race driver Bruce McLaren first grabbed the

The M23 will go down as one of the most successful cars in F1 history recording 16 race wins while finishing inside the top three in the constructors’ championship for five years. It also earned Britain’s James Hunt the 1976 world championship after an epic battle with Ferrari’s Niki Lauda. While enjoying F1 success, McLaren were making a mark in America too with their cars winning three Indy 500 races in the hands of Mark Donohue and Johnny Rutherford. McLaren suffered a dip in form in the late 70s and early 80s which forced Mayer to merge the team with Ron Dennis’ Project Four Formula 2 outfit. With highly regarded designer John Barnard now joining McLaren, the team’s fortune changed and the 1980s will be remembered as McLaren’s most successful period. The decade saw McLaren secure four constructors’ crowns and five drivers’ titles marking them as the team to beat. With advances in aerodynamics coupled with TAG built Porsche turbo engines, the MP4-2 became an unstoppable force in 1984. The car won 12 Grand Prix and drivers Lauda and Alain Prost accrued two and half times the amount of points than any other team. Lauda also pipped Prost to the title by just half a point but ‘The Pro-fessor’ was to return the favour the following year as he secured the title and McLaren racked up a third constructors’ crown. Prost’s emergence as a top driver continued when he guided his McLaren to his second title in 1986.
following season came along he was sat in his very own McLaren M2B Formula One car. Success wasn’t immediate and it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the early years. The team’s first cars, the M2B and the M4, proved to be largely unreliable and scored just six world championship points in two seasons. However, the search for a maiden victory came to end in 1968 with the launch of the M7. Engines let down its predecessors but the arrival of the Cosworth DFV unit solved this and turned McLaren into a winner with Bruce taking the team’s first win at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. Despite facing fierce opposition from Lotus, Ferrari and Matra, victories at Monza and Canada followed for Denny Hulme, firmly placing the team on the Formula 1 map.
the team was rocked to its very core by a tragic accident. Founder Bruce McLaren’s sudden death following a testing crash in a McLaren Can-Am car at Goodwood in 1970 could have spelled the end for the team, but Mayer gathered his troops and they chose to persevere and honour McLaren’s vision.
srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™
ytiruceS enO-nI-llA
The M7 continued to be a front runner in 1969 but by 1971 its life was up just as
By the mid 1970’s they struck gold with the creation of the M23. The car, which is currently making a splash on the big screens courtesy of Ron Howard’s film RUSH, earned McLaren its first drivers‘ and constructors titles. The combination of Brazilian reigning world champion Emerson Fittipaldi and the refined M23 gelled immediately. While Hulme won the opening race in Argentina, Fittipaldi racked up race wins in Brazil, Belgium and Canada along with four more podiums to secure the drivers’ and constructors’ double in 1974.
The arrival of Ayrton Senna to join Prost in 1988 along with the acquisition of Honda en-gines saw the team win a staggering 15 of the 16 races as rising star Senna won his first world title. Senna and Prost’s bitter rivalry tested the team to its limits but success contin-ued with two more constructors’ titles. After a controversial collisions involving the two McLarens at Suzuka, Prost won the 1989 title. Senna and Prost’s rivalry certainly gave McLaren plenty of media coverage and a steady stream of drama, keeping fans glued to their television screens as the iconic red and white liveried cars became the image of 80s F1. This spilled over into the early 90s although Prost and Barnard had both moved to join Ferrari. Despite the big shake up, Senna and McLaren remained the benchmark winning both the drivers‘ and constructors’ titles in 1990 and 1991, the team’s fourth consecutive crown.

Round 15 - Japan I Cover Story
The loss of Honda engines and the development of the Williams team left McLaren strug-gling to hold onto their title as the team to beat. Powered by unsuccessful and underpow-ered Ford, TAG and eventually Peugeot units they gradually slipped down the pecking order. It wasn’t until a deal with Mercedes-Benz in the late 1990’, which will come to an end in 2014, and the signing of now Red Bull designer Adrian Newey, that saw the team rise to prominence again. It took time for the McLaren and Mercedes to gel with the team going three years without a race win, before David Coulthard brought that to an end in Australia in 1997. But it was Finland’s Mika Hakkinen, who helped bring the glory days back to the Woking squad along with talented Scot Coulthard in 1998. While Hakkinen took the drivers’ title, the team took on the might of Michael Schumacher and Ferrari to claim their eighth and most recent constructors’ title. Hakkinen went on to win the drivers‘ title again the following year while the team just missed out in the constructors. For the last 13 years McLaren has remained a leading force in Formula One winning countless races but only one title has come their way during the period, when Lewis Hamilton claimed the 2008
7
drivers’ crown. This coincides with some of the world’s most blessed talents in Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Juan Pablo Montoya and Jenson Button, driving for the marque. However, the team, which started from humble beginnings in 1966 and now with Martin Whitmarsh at the helm, has finished runner-up in the constructors’ championship six times. And the outfit has only missed out on a top three placing on three occasions during this period. Reliability has certainly cost them a couple of titles most notably during 2005 and 2006, but that is the nature of Formula 1 as fractions of seconds and luck have become all the more crucial for success. But it’s record is second to none with its 45 drivers over the 50 years helping the team to 182 race victories, with only Ferrari boasting more race wins, aided by a ten year ad-vantage. When looking at McLaren’s 50 years former team principal Ron Dennis, who led the team from 1981-2008, eloquently sums up just what it means to the team half a century on. “McLaren started as the dream of one man, and it’s since grown to encompass the hopes and dreams of more than 2000
men and women, who work as tirelessly as Bruce McLaren himself once did to ensure that everything we do reflects well when compared with everything we’ve ever achieved,” he said. “So, our 50th anniversary provides an opportunity for every single McLaren employee to realise that he or she is an utterly crucial part of an organisation with a history and a cul-ture that really mean something.

“Call it McLaren’s DNA, if you like. Call it McLaren’s brand continuity, if you prefer. Call it McLaren’s corporate culture, if you will. Call it McLaren’s undiminished hunger to win in everything we do, and you’d probably be getting closest to what I mean, what I think, and what I feel.” While 2013 has been a year to forget on the track its also been a year of reflection. When looking back through history, one thing that is for certain, it won’t be long before McLaren rises again.

SUZUKA CIRCUIT Technical preview with the Lotus F1 team
THE CAR Rear wing Comparable downforce to Silverstone or Barcelona, so not maximum levels, but not far off. Brakes The only heavy braking applications are into the Turn 11 hairpin and into the Turn 16-17 chicane. As with Silverstone, much of the lap is spent cooling the brakes so – in contrast to Singapore – more attention is paid to keeping the brakes warm. Suspension Good change of direction is required, especially for the ‘Snake’ through Turns 3-7, so a stiffer and more responsive setup is sought. Tyres The Super Soft and Medium will be used. Suzuka is one of the biggest challenges for the tyres all year because of the track layout: it contains a wide variety of corners, many

of which are fast, but there are also some heavy braking areas and tighter corners. The hottest part of the tyre tread can reach 120 degrees centigrade at Suzuka. Front wing Front wing level is important to eradicate speed sapping understeer through the long ‘Spoon’• corner, and to assist with quick change of direction in the ‘Snake’.
Turns 3-6 Understeer needs to be minimised for the constant change of direction in this series of turns, with a well-balanced car maintaining the speed. Turns 8 & 9 Two tricky turns make up Degner. The first is short and narrow, with a cautious approach required because of the inner kerb. Drivers need to get as close as possible to it without making contact.

Engine A high-speed figure of eight track that features every possible corner; from high speed kinks to flowing linked turns, profiled curved bends and hairpins. The engine needs to deliver across the entire power spectrum without sacrificing driveability and responsiveness. The high speed corners such as the ‘Esses’ also subject the internals of the engine and lubricant systems to high lateral G-forces.
THE CIRCUIT Turn 1 Turn 1 is almost flat with only a light lift. A quick turn leading into the slower Turn 2.
Turn 13 & 14 Turns 13 + 14 make up the Spoon Curve. Understeer saps speed here so needs to be minimised; a fast exit is necessary onto the following straight. ™

Turn 15 130R is flat out, but more difficult when the cars are heavy with fuel. Turn 16 Turn 16 is the best overtaking opportunity around the circuit layout; DRS effectiveness at this track is less than elsewhere.
Round 15 - Japan I Bagman

The Bagman says...
R
ed Bull’s Sebastian Vettel didn’t display quite the dominance he has previously shown on his way to victory in Korea, but the rest of the Formula 1 field are still searching for answers to his pace. With three victories recorded at Japan’s Suzuka venue already, Vettel clearly knows how to master the challenges it possesses and will surely be a firm favourite for the victory this weekend. He has the added incentive to push with the fact a fifth consecutive win could earn him his fourth world title. For championship rival Fernando Alonso, this is a do-or-die race and he will need to perform to ensure he keeps the championship battle alive. The Ferrari man usually manages to produce on race day
but he will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing race in Korea last week. However, you can guarantee he will fight to the death and won’t want to hand the title to Vettel easily. Alonso must finish eighth or higher to keep the title race hanging in the balance. Last week’s Korean Grand Prix showed once again Mercedes has a fast car but it was let down by its tyre economy in the race. If they can manage their tyres sufficiently, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg could issue a serious challenge to Vettel. A team returning to form is Lotus. Both Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean worried Vettel more than anyone else in Korea, resulting in two podiums for the squad and they could be the drivers to watch at Suzuka. As for Mark Webber, bad luck continues to follow him around like a bad smell. Last week he suffered a puncture while
storming back into race contention. He was then taken out of the race by Adrian Sutil and his Red Bull caught fire. Webber hails Suzuka as one of his favourite circuits and no doubt and if bad luck deserts him he will be at the sharp end. Fans were treated to an epic display of racing in the midfield and for the lower points playing positions in Korea and this could be set to continue in Korea. The surprise package was Sauber and in particular Nico Hulkenberg. The young German, driving for his future, managed to hold off both Mercedes and Alonso to finish fourth. He was helped by Sauber superior traction coming out of slow corners and along with the team’s upgrades, it will be worth keeping an eye on him. With Force India continuing to pose a threat to McLaren in the constructors championship, expect a response from Martin Whitmarsh’s team.
