Round 16 - Korea I Introduction
Raising the bar It was somewhat ironic that Sebastian Vettel secured his second consecutive World Drivers’ Championship crown with ‘only’ a third place finish last weekend at Suzuka.
KOREA Stefan Bartholomaeus
As detailed in this Race Guide’s cover story, the 24-year-old German has had a remarkable season behind the wheel of his Red Bull RB7.
PRODUCTION:
Prior to Japan, a fourth at his home Grand Prix was the only occasion where Vettel has failed to finish inside the top two.
EDITOR:
Stefan Bartholomaeus
Even the likes of Michael Schumacher’s utterly dominant 2004 campaign - in which he won 12 of the first 13 races, or Nigel Mansell’s 1992 performance - in which he won eight of the first 10 races, were sprinkled with the odd non-points finish and DNF.
SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson IMAGES:
It has perhaps been lost in the brilliance of Vettel’s drives, which have well and truly seen off the challenge faced from Mark Webber last year, that Adrian Newey’s latest Red Bull has provided a real leap-forward in the reliability stakes over the previous incarnation.
Scuderia Ferrari Red Bull Racing Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Mercedes GP Lotus Renault GP
While critics may point to the KERS issues experienced by both Red Bull drivers earlier this year, it can be said that if the car still wins the race, it’s hardly been unreliable...
Virgin Racing Hispania Racing Team PARTNERS: Castrol EDGE, IRWIN Tools, Jack Daniel’s, Orrcon Steel, Pirtek, Vodafone, HDT, Norton 360, Toshiba, Armor All
With Red Bull potentially wrapping up the Constructors’ Championship this weekend, it’ll be interesting to see if Vettel’s amazing run is compromised by the team’s desire to begin its 2012 development program a little early. Green means go!

Round 16 - Korea I Cover Story
BEWARE THE RECORD BREAKER Youngest-ever two-time champ hungry for more
H
aving sealed his second World Drivers’ Championship in Japan, Sebastian Vettel has set his sights on helping Red Bull Racing defend its Constructors’ Championship title. The Milton Keynes based squad heads into this weekend’s Korean Grand Prix with a 130 point lead over Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. With 129 points to be awarded after Korea, simply maintaining the current gap at the Korea International Circuit will be enough to seal the deal. At 24 years and 98 days old, third place in Japan was enough to ensure Vettel became the youngest ever two-time World
Champion, and has kept the German within reach of several other records. Vettel needs just two more pole positions to equal Nigel Mansell’s chart topping 14 poles from 1992, and also sits just two front-row starts shy of the benchmark of 16 currently shared by Ayrton Senna (1989), Alain Prost (1993) and Damon Hill (1996). In race terms, Vettel needs three podiums from the final four races to match Michael Schumacher’s record of 17 from 2004, although the elder German’s mark of 13 wins from the same season may prove difficult to match, as Vettel currently sits on nine.
Regardless of the statistics, the Red Bull Racing star says he’s looking forward to the remaining races, which he hopes can be used by the team to get a head start on 2012. “The best thing (about sealing the Drivers’ Championship in Japan) is that the season is not over yet,” says Vettel. “We still have those four races to learn a lot, and in a way a certain freedom to explore to make sure we come back next year even stronger and more prepared. “It was special to be able to wrap up the (Drivers’) Championship in Japan, especially this year after the disasters that happened at the beginning of the year.
7
“It’s a special race for all of us. Obviously I would have loved to win, but it was a difficult race and I think third and fourth was a good result for the team - a lot of points, and we’re still racing for the Constructors, so it’s important.” While Vettel has six more wins this year than his nearest rival Jenson Button, the Vettel points to his performances in races that he did not win as just as important.
to win but still came away with a podium and a lot of points (that were important). “We over-performed in the races that we weren’t ‘supposed to win.’ We made very few mistakes, and even when the boat started shaking, we kept it on course.”
“A championship consists obviously of more than just one race or a couple of races,” he says.
Not surprisingly, team principal Christian Horner says he’s thoroughly impressed by Vettel’s performance, but has been quick to point to the importance of the Constructors’ Championship following the clinching of the Drivers’ title in Japan.
“We have had a lot of wins so far, but surely I think it was the races where we weren’t able
“I think it’s huge what he’s achieved and his level of performance against some
massive opponents - Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher - they’re all champions, and to beat those guys with the level of dominance that he’s achieved is something quite phenomenal,” says Horner. “(But) the Drivers’ World Championship is just the first part, obviously the second part is to retain the constructors. With four races to go, although we have a healthy lead we take nothing for granted.”
8
e t u l a S b e S The The Japanese Grand Prix is well loved for its enthusiastic fans. This youngster will need to work on his aggression if he is to emulate his hero Sebastian Vettel however.

Red Bull Racing will be out to avenge its disastrous run in the 2010 Korean Grand Prix, which saw both cars fail to finish at a critical point of the championship. This year, the Milton Keynes based team will head to Korea aiming to clinch the Constructors’ Championship. Going by the performances in Japan, sealing a second consecutive Constructors’ title this weekend is far from a sure thing. The Red Bulls were clearly the hardest on their tyres at Suzuka - allowing both Button and Alonso to finish ahead of Vettel. Webber can see the podium with an improved qualifying performance. THE BAGMAN’S SAY Success in the Japan marked Jenson Button’s first ever dry-weather Grand Prix victory outside of his championship season with Brawn Grand Prix. Having missed pole by just 0.009s, the Briton intelligently backed out of what could have been an almighty shunt with Vettel on the run to the first corner, before managing his tyres and fuel better than his rivals to take the win. Button may have had a disastrous run in Korea last year, but repeating his Suzuka performance is far from out of the question. Team-mate Hamilton meanwhile has not seen the podium in five races after another erratic race in Japan. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

THE BAGMAN’S SAY While the Ferraris are again expected to be off the pace of the Red Bulls and McLarens in Korea, the Japanese Grand Prix proved just why Fernando Alonso can never be discounted.
Fernando Alonso Nationality: Spanish Wins: 27 DoB: 29/07/1981 Poles: 20 Debut: Albert Park, 2001 Fastest Laps: 19 Career Highlights: 2005 and 2006 World Drivers Champion, 1st 1999 Euro Open by Nissan
The Spaniard was out-qualified by his team-mate Felipe Massa for just the third time all season on Saturday, but fought through to second in the race through a combination of DRS overtaking and a promising turn of speed on the hard tyre.

Look for the battle between Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg to be one of the highlights of the Korean Grand Prix weekend, with the eight-time World Champion in clearly the best form of his ‘second career’. Schumacher fought hard to keep the top six in sight during the opening stages in Japan - eventually beating Massa into sixth place to be the best non-Red Bull, McLaren or Ferrari driver for the third time in four races. Rosberg meanwhile did well to score a point after a hydraulic failure in qualifying left him 20th on the grid. Expect points from both drivers in Korea. Mercedes GP Petronas F1 Team

Lotus Renault was back on form as promised in Japan - putting its disastrous run on the tight streets of Singapore behind it. Both Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna made Q3 at Suzuka, and joined Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi in sacrificing a Q3 run in order to be in a strategically better position for the race. While Senna’s race was ironically compromised by Petrov in the opening corners, the Russian benefited from the mid-race Safety Car period before passing five cars in the final stint to finish ninth. The black and gold cars are expected to again be scrapping for the final points in Korea. Lotus Renault GP

The weekend started horribly for both drivers, with the Brazilian crashing while the Venezuelan suffered engine issues. Like that at Mercedes, the intra-team battle is perhaps the key talking point at Sauber heading into the final four races of the season. Following Kamui Kobayashi’s outstanding first-half of the campaign, Sergio Perez has put the points on the board in recent events, including overcoming a hydraulic problem in Q2 in Japan to finish eighth. Kobayashi meanwhile will need a better start in Korea if he is to add to his points tally, with the Japanese driver’s home Grand Prix effectively over from the moment the lights went out. Both will be pushing hard to sneak into the top 10 on Sunday. Sauber F1 Team

While the main Red Bull team is looking to seal its second consecutive Constructors’ Championship this weekend, the Toro Rosso drivers may struggle to score points at all. Suzuka proved difficult for both Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari, with the former retiring after his right-front wheel departed immediately following a pitstop. Alguersuari had arguably a worse time of it - running 20th early as he struggled for speed. Points will be a tough ask again in Korea.

Kovalainen gave it his all at Suzuka, knocking off Trulli’s best effort with a single run in Q1, before running 14th in the opening laps of the race thanks to a tremendous start. Kovalainen and Trulli were in their usual positions of 18th and 19th by the flag however, the best of the second year teams but still some way away from the mid-field pace. Expect more of the same this weekend, pending the conditions. Team Lotus

Daniel Ricciardo will be aiming to beat at least one of the Virgin Racing entries in Korea, having finishing within four seconds of the pair in Japan. The Australian again out-qualified his more experienced team-mate Tonio Liuzzi in Suzuka. Liuzzi will again face a difficult weekend, with third driver Narain Karthikeyan set to take over his entry in Practice 1 for the second consecutive race. Losing 90 minutes of track time prior to the weekend is hardly ideal for the Italian, and can be at least partially blamed for his lacklustre Suzuka weekend. Timo Glock will be especially keen to put in a strong performance at the Korea International Circuit, after his rookie team-mate Jerome D’Ambrosio again trumped the German in qualifying at Suzuka. Glock, who eventually finished one place ahead of the Belgian in the race in Japan, was expected to dominate his team-mate this year, and needs to do so if he is to ever return to a competitive team. Both drivers will likely come under fire from the ever-improving Ricciardo, although the traction-orientated circuit layout should tip the balance in favour of the Virgins. Marussia Virgin Racing

Round 16 - Korea I Race Stats
Previous Winners Last year saw the Formula One World Championship visit South Korea for the first time. It was a dream result for Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who took the win and championship lead as Red Bull Racing turned a 1-2 qualifying lock-out into a double DNF.
After gaining two spots in the Webber incident, Lewis Hamilton took second place from Alonso when the leaders pitted for intermediate tyres under the race’s second Safety Car. The Ferrari driver soon had the position back however, thanks to the Briton out-braking himself into Turn 1 on the restart.
After months of speculation about whether the Korea International Circuit would be finished in time for the race, it was rain that proved most troublesome, with spectators enduring 17 Safety Car laps before racing finally got underway.
The championship took another twist when Sebastian Vettel’s dominant performance ended courtesy of an engine failure with just 10 laps to run. With Alonso leading home Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Michael Schumacher, the Spaniard had turned a 14 point deficit to Webber into an 11 point lead.
While some parts of the circuit appeared fit for intermediates by the time the Safety Car pulled in, a wet Turn 12 exit kerb quickly proved the downfall of Mark Webber. After running onto the kerb, the Aussie was sent spinning into the inside wall - collecting a hapless Nico Rosberg on his way into retirement.
With just two races remaining in the campaign, the championship battle was as wide-open as ever.
