From Russia with love

T

he events around the paddock at Suzuka sent the Formula 1 news machine into overdrive with the suite of driver/team switches. With Sebastian Vettel parting company from the team which has supplied him with the last four world titles, the dominoes are falling into place. Vettel is moving to the Maranello marque where Fernando Alonso will exit with unconfirmed reports that he will link with McLaren as Honda’s new poster boy. Russian ace Daniil Kvyat will take Vettel’s seat at Red Bull after his hugely impressive maiden season at Toro Rosso. The future of several other drivers in the field remain clouded including the McLaren veteran Jenson Button. F1’s paddock will be a little more sombre this weekend as the grand prix machine moves to a new venue, the Sochi circuit in the Black Sea resort city which hosted the Winter Olympics earlier this year. Everyone’s thoughts remain focussed on Jules

Bianchi as he remains in Mie General Hospital in Japan following his horrific crash into the back of a recovery tractor at Suzuka. The 25-year-old Frenchman was in a critical but stable condition having undergone surgery. The incident has dampened celebrations ahead of the first F1 grand prix to be held in Russia at the 5.853km circuit which runs in a clockwise direction. Computer modelling suggests an average lap speed of 215km/h around the layout that sees 12 right and six left-hand corners.

Russian Roulette – Silly season in full swing as F1 circus heads into the unknown

T

he landscape in Formula 1 is set to change significantly next season following the news that Sebastian Vettel is leaving Red Bull which has kicked the driver market into overdrive. The four-time world champion surprised the Suzuka paddock with the news he will be leaving the team that has helped turn him into F1's most successful driver of the last five years. Although he is yet to confirm his destination, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner revealed shortly after the announcement that his former driver will be moving to Ferrari. The onus then shifted to Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who now appears set to rejoin McLaren, having left the team after one acrimonious season in 2007. Vettel claims the reason for his departure is the promise of a new challenge having spent almost his entire F1 career at Red Bull Racing. However, with Ferrari clearly enduring one of their worst runs in the sport this could be a

real career defining move. “I’m not leaving because I don’t like the team nor because I don’t like individuals nor the situation, I’m not running away from anything – it felt like the right time and the voice inside me and hunger to do something new was bigger,” said Vettel. It will be brave move for Vettel and one that is reminiscent of Michael Schumacher, who turned a Ferrari team down on their luck into world champions. In the opposite direction, double world champion Alonso remains coy on his plans for 2015, although reports claim the Spaniard has already signed a deal with Honda, McLaren’s new engine suppliers next season. “I have a very unique position – thanks to so many years and the respected work I’ve done on the track I decide where to go, what I do, and when I do it,” said Alonso. “Probably some of the things that are happening [now] are the consequence of my thinking.

“I have my mind set. I’ve had a plan, very clear; for the last two or three months I’ve known what I wanted to do.” Having spent five years at the Maranello squad without securing a third title, this potentially could be Alonso’s final throw of the dice.

With Alonso seemingly all but confirmed at McLaren, Jenson Button’s F1 future is hanging in the balance. The 2009 world champion is out of contract at the end of the season along with his current team-mate Kevin Magnussen. While team boss Ron Dennis protests that his squad are yet to sign any driver for next season, it seems as though it is inevitable that either Button or Magnussen will be departing to make way for Alonso. Button has added fuel to the fire with comments about his future that suggests All-In-One Security

his future is away from McLaren and perhaps F1 itself. “There are always other options in life,” Button told the official F1 website when asked about options outside of McLaren for next year.

Kvyat Red Bull’s new young gun Its been a whirlwind 12 months for Daniil Kvyat who now faces the prospect of joining the world championship winning Red Bull squad with the rookie yet to complete his maiden F1 season. The surprise promotion to replace Vettel could not have come at a better time with the 20-year-old preparing for his home grand prix. Having been awarded the seat at Toro Rosso this year ahead of more experienced candidates Carlos Sainz Jr and Antonio Felix Da Costa, the Russian has been under pressure to deliver results. Impressively Kvyat has taken to the category like a duck to water achieving five points finishes, including a ninth in his maiden GP start. His results have arrived driving a Toro Rosso which is not among the fastest cars on the grid. Moving to Red Bull next season is by no means an easy task with expectation levels set to skyrocket now the team have shown faith in the latest refinement of the young driver program production line. Kvyat’s maturity will certainly help

him make the switch and it appears he already has his mind in the right place. “I think everything’s happened quite fast since I’ve been in F1, but I have to be thankful Red Bull for the opportunity, for the trust and faith,” said Kvyat. “Of course we have been together for a long way and they know what kind of person I am so I will do my absolute best to keep the team high, my name high and our name high. It will be interesting. “It’s normal that there are expectations

from the outside. At the end you have to keep doing your best job possible to keep focused on your own job. “I think the general approach from myself will not change in any way. Like I said when I was coming in to Formula One I will just do my best and I think that’s the best thing I can do right now. There are no miracles, you just have to rely on your own capabilities.” Only time will tell if this is the correct decision.

stages of the race, underwent surgery on a diffuse axonal brain injury on Sunday. A diffuse axonal injury is caused by the sudden movement of the brain within the skull, rather than from a direct blow to the head.
