Hats off to the title sponsor of this weekend’s British Grand Prix, Santander, for the part it has played in generating local preevent media interest in Formula 1. For those who missed it, the Spanish banking giant, which could be forgiven for having rather more domestic issues on its mind at present, last week released its own fantasy circuit layout for a Grand Prix through the streets of London. Not one to do things by halves, the firm engaged local drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, as well as television commentators Martin Brundle and David Croft, to explain its 14corner, 5.1km, layout. Predictably, the site of Formula 1 cars - albeit digital renderings of - ripping past such iconic landmarks as Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Admiralty Arch proved too evocative to be ignored by even the world’s leading news outlets. Whipping the hype even further, and perhaps not coincidentally diverting attention away from the bribe scandal that had grabbed column inches the day before, Bernie Ecclestone even suggested that Formula 1 itself would be willing to pay the bill to hold a Grand Prix through London. Despite the London Olympics being just weeks from kicking off, Formula 1 had managed to wrestle away the spotlight in glamorous fashion. The real genius of it, of course, is the fact that a Grand Prix through the middle of the world’s most congested city is about as fanciful as it gets. The logistical and economic arguments against it are as plentiful as they are dull. While other more serious bids for utilising the Olympic site for motor racing in the future are bubbling away in the background, holding a Grand Prix in the heart of the city has long been, and will undoubtedly remain, nothing more than a eye-catching idea. Well played, Santander. Green means go!

Round 9 - Silverstone I Cover Story
THE 15 YEAR ITCH Can Williams finally win again at home?
I
t’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since Williams last triumphed in the British Grand Prix.
Then at the peak of its powers, Jacques Villenueve’s 1997 victory was the Grovebased squad’s sixth win at Silverstone in seven years, and its 10th home-soil success in the World Championship. Looking back through the decades, one is reminded of the fact that the Williams F1 story is largely defined by its feats at the British Grand Prix. It’s very first Grand Prix win took place on Silverstone’s sweeps in 1979, when Swiss journeyman Clay Regazzoni benefited from a failure on team-mate Alan Jones’
car to take a popular victory against the previously dominant French (Ligier and Renault) and Italian (Ferrari) competition. Jones would have his revenge a year later when he returned to take the top step. Of course, the combination of the gritty Australian and the Ford-powered FW07 eventually led Jones and Williams to the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles respectively that season. As grand as those early triumphs were, the squad’s true affinity with its home race was to be hammered home by Nigel Mansell. A pair of back-to-back wins (1886/1987 and 1991/1992) for the lion-hearted British hero culminated in wrapping up the 1992 title at Silverstone, which sent local interest in
Grand Prix racing soaring to record heights. Mansell’s achievements kicked off a period where Williams could seemingly do no wrong at the Northamptonshire venue. Wins for Alain Prost (1993), Damon Hill (1994) and Jacques Villeneuve (1996 and 1997) followed before the current 15 year drought took hold. While defeating the likes of Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Lotus (formerly Renault) - which have shared the Silverstone wins since 1997 - this weekend won’t be easy, Williams has genuine reasons to be optimistic. Pastor Maldonado undoubtedly had a quick car beneath him last time out in
9
Valencia, where he qualified third before tripping over Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren while battling for the final podium spot on the penultimate lap. Although the stewards saw the clash as an act of typical on-track thuggery from the Venezuelan, the car’s speed was undeniable. Like all teams, Williams has struggled to consistently get its car into the right operating window for the tyres this season. In the races between Maldonado’s muchdiscussed triumph at in Barcelona and his resurgence in Valencia, the second-year driver failed to score a single point. According to Williams’ operations chief Mark Gillian however, the similarities between Silverstone and Barcelona has the team particular positive about its chances of again finding that illustrious sweet spot this weekend. “We head to our home Grand Prix at Silverstone with high hopes,” says Gillian. “Pirelli bring their hard (prime) and soft (option) tyres to this race, which is the
same pairing that we used successfully in Barcelona. “We will also bring an updated aerodynamic package to the event which is imperative given the importance of aerodynamic efficiency around this track and how tight the grid is at present.” Maldonado, who is a former winner at Silverstone in GP2, echoes Gillian’s thoughts. “I think the track will suit our car because it’s similar to Barcelona and it’s also very fun to drive with sections like Maggots and Becketts which really test you as a driver,” says the 27-year-old. “The pace of the car in Valencia was very promising and we have a number of updates expected for this race as well so hopefully we can give the home fans a good result.” Although disappointed to miss out on a podium in Valencia, Maldonado says that his understanding of the Pirelli rubber is
also a continual source of confidence. “I think I understand the tyres very well, much better than last year,” he says. “Even if they changed for this year, I have a great feeling. I know exactly what to do to look after the tyres, how to manage the race to get a longer life from them. I am always trying to improve, but I think the combination between me, the car, and the tyres is good at the moment.” Team-mate Bruno Senna has had a less headline-grabbing year. After a strong start, the Brazilian has scored just two points in the last five races, and was lucky to even end up with 10th in Valencia following a highspeed clash with Kamui Kobayashi. While the Senna name may not be as linked with Silverstone as it is other venues (Bruno’s uncle Ayrton took just one victory at the venue), Bruno rates the current layout as one of the best on the calendar. “Silverstone is one of my favourite tracks because it’s high speed and flows really well,” he says. “Our car has good pace at the high down force tracks and is good on high speed corners as well so it should suit Silverstone. “Whilst we didn’t get the result we were hoping for in Valencia we showed that our car can be very competitive and with more updates planned for this race I’m optimistic about what we can achieve.” With Williams having added a return to Renault power this year to its already 1997inspired livery design, memories of victories past will undoubtedly come flooding back should either Maldonado or Senna take the chequered flag this weekend.

Round 9 - Silverstone I Track Details
Circuit Details Silverstone Technical preview with Lotus F1’s trackside operations director Alan Permane
THE CAR Rear wing After three street courses, Silverstone requires a slightly lower level of downforce than we’ve seen of late with aerodynamic efficiency being king. Brakes In complete contrast to places like Canada or Valencia where we battle to keep the brakes cool, here we fight to maintain enough heat in them. Silverstone is very easy on the brakes, which get relatively little usage due to the quantity of high speed corners. On occasions when the drivers actually need the brakes they can be quite cold, so the key is to ensure they stay warm enough to function correctly. Suspension There isn’t a great deal of kerb usage or anything which relies on any particular aspect of the suspension here, as it’s more of an aerodynamic efficiency type of circuit. You need a stable car through the high speed corners like Copse, Maggots, Becketts and Chapel, and this is achieved through a combination of aerodynamic balance and suspension settings. Tyres Silverstone is not dissimilar to Barcelona in that the high speed corners make it quite a
tough circuit on tyres. There has also been some resurfacing at Copse – the most highspeed section of the track – which could have an impact on tyre wear.
essential to ensure good speed down the straight, as this leads on through Copse, then subsequently into the Becketts complex and on to Stowe.
Front wing The cars may carry a little bit more front wing here than at other places to balance the car through the high speed corners. This also helps minimise understeer through Brooklands and Luffield which is vital to maintain good speed down the following straight, then on through Copse and into the Becketts complex.
Turn 9 Taken almost flat out, Copse is one of the most daunting corners of the season. It’s been resurfaced for this year, which could catch a few drivers out on their early runs.
Engine The layout of Silverstone is reasonably hard on the engine due to the high average rpm used over the course of a lap.
THE Circuit Turn 1 The bump at Abbey was ‘addressed’ in 2011 after drivers complained of its severity, making this a much simpler corner than previously. Turns 1-6 The new section of the circuit – introduced in 2010 – is now quite familiar to most of the drivers, but this will be Kimi’s first experience of the updated layout. Turn 7 Minimising understeer through Luffield is
Turns 10-13 Overall car balance is essential through the high-speed Becketts complex, which is entered at over 300kph with only minor throttle lift through the entire series of corners. Turn 15 Stowe follows the infamous Hangar straight – the longest full throttle zone around the circuit – and is approached at over 300kph. Turn 16 Vale is one of the slowest corners on the track – taken at around 100kph – and precedes the final right-hander of Club before the drivers pile down the start / finish straight. Start/finish straight This is the second year in which the new pit complex will be used, with the original paddock being located on what is now the National straight.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Following the performance gained from its ‘d-spec’ upgrade package debuted in Valencia, Red Bull will head to Silverstone as the favourites for victory. The upgrades may have contributed to unreliability issues for both Vettel and Webber in Spain, but the speed of the updated RB8 was undeniable. The majority of the Valencia upgrades centred around the car’s lower rear bodywork - further refining an area that has seen several revisions since pre-season testing. Both drivers have won here in the past and can be expected to be neck-and-neck this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The British Grand Prix is always a big weekend for McLaren, especially so in the last few years where it has fielded an all-British driver line-up. The team’s package wasn’t far away from the ultimate pace in Valencia, with Hamilton managing to qualifying in the top two for the seventh time in eight races. Not for the first time however, tyre degradation and the 2008 World Champion’s determination to hold position were the car’s downfall. The cooler conditions likely to prevail at Silverstone should see Hamilton well in the podium fight this weekend. Team-mate Button has yet to stand on the podium at his home race, and with a qualifying average of 10.8 over the last three races, might be up against it once again.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The Ferrari may continue to lack the ultimate onelap pace of its rivals, but as proven so emphatically in Valencia, one should never write-off the chances of Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard won the European GP despite starting 11th, and also took an against-the-odds victory at Silverstone last year. While his 2011 effort was boosted by what turned out to be a one-race crackdown on off-throttle diffuser blowing, the high-speed sweeps of the British GP venue are guaranteed to magnify any aerodynamic deficiencies in the Scuderia’s package. The car’s form on the similar Barcelona layout however indicates that a victory is not completely out of the question.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Michael Schumacher’s come-from-behind podium in Valencia was the German’s first visit to the rostrum in almost six years, and handed the Mercedes team just its second trophy in five races. The Brackley-based squad’s early season traits of being devastatingly quick over one-lap before fading fast in the races has long disappeared, leaving the team without a front-row start since China. Rosberg, however, has proven remarkably consistent - scoring just one less point than championship leader Alonso across the last six races. Expect the two Silver Arrows to be right in the middle of the top 10 scrap this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Lotus continues to be the nearly-team of the 2012 season, with both Grosjean and Raikkonen threatening to win races, but continually coming up short. The European Grand Prix was a case in point, with Grosjean running second for a large portion of the race before a rare mechanical failure (alternator), and Raikkonen ultimately finishing in the runner-up position. With the E20 having proven itself to work best in warmer track conditions, expecting the team to extract the extra ounce of pace out of the car required to take the biggest trophy at Silverstone is likely to be too much. A top five finish for either driver will be a good result.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Force India enjoyed its best points haul of the season in Valencia, with Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta finishing fifth and seventh respectively. Encouragingly heading into his home Grand Prix, 10th on the grid and seventh in the race were both disappointing results for di Resta. The former DTM champion believed that, without a critical mistake in Q3, he could have started as high as fourth. The race meanwhile was a case of sticking too rigidly to a one-stop plan, when joining Schumacher and Webber in making a late final stop could likely have rocketed him into the top placings. Both di Resta and Hulkenberg appear to stand a strong chance of scoring more points this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Sunday’s race is again likely to be a come-frombehind challenge for the Sauber squad. Perez has started no better than 15th over the last three races, while team-mate Kobayashi also has a double-digit season qualifying average, and heads to Silverstone with a five-place grid penalty following a clash with Felipe Massa in Valencia. THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Like Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi, Jean-Eric Vergne will be on the back-foot this weekend thanks to a carry-over grid penalty from Valencia. The French rookie will likely start last thanks to a 10place punishment for an awkward clash with the Caterham of Heikki Kovalainen. Vergne was out-qualified by team-mate Ricciardo for the seventh time in eight Grands Prix in Valencia. The Australian celebrates a full year as an F1 driver this weekend at Silverstone. Sadly, the former long-time Red Bull-backed driver’s chances of scoring points this year aren’t that much greater than they were 12 months ago in the HRT. THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Pastor Maldonado and Williams were back on form in Valencia - the Venezuelan qualifying an outstanding third on Saturday before ultimately tripping over Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages of the race while fighting for the final podium spot. The Williams team says it’s highly optimistic of providing its drivers with a quick car this weekend at Silverstone. The circuit’s similarities with Barcelona, where Maldonado broke the squad’s eight-year victory drought earlier this season, combined with the Valencia form gives strong reason for optimism.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Caterham will debut the second package of new parts in its two-stage update this weekend at Silverstone. While the team is cautious on predicting its gain, Heikki Kovalainen says he’s hoping for between a 0.5s and 1s improvement from the package, which will include new rear bodywork and exhaust treatment. Having genuinely out-qualified both Toro Rossos in Valencia, the Finn is understandably excited about the potential to push further into the midfield this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The HRT will need to get on top of the tyre degradation issues its suffered from in Valencia if it is to beat its fellow cellar-dwellers Marussia this weekend. While both Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan out-qualified Charles Pic at the Spanish circuit, neither could stay ahead of the French rookie in the race. The team is this weekend planning on giving third-driver Dani Clos mileage during Friday practice - the first time that the Spaniard has experienced a race weekend since Barcelona.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Expect Marussia to pull clear of the HRT this weekend in the battle of the backmarkers. Marussia is bringing what it describes as its “first proper wind-tunnel generated’ upgrade of the season to Silverstone, which is set to include a new rear wing, exhausts, floor and sidepods. Timo Glock will return after missing the European Grand Prix with an infection. The German’s absence from qualifying and the race in Valencia left the team’s fortunes squarely on the shoulders of Charles Pic who, despite being outqualified by both HRTs, managed to come out on top in the race.
