Round 13 - Singapore I Editorial

3

The hands of time Singapore Guest EDITOR: Tom Howard

The Singapore Grand Prix will forever be tainted by one of Formula One’s dark days following the ‘Crashgate’ affair of 2008. But as they say, time is a great healer and it is that same valuable commodity which is fast running out in this year’s title race. Following Sebastian Vettel’s impressive romp to the Italian Grand Prix two weeks ago, the Red Bull racer has motored into a 53 point lead in the championship standings, forcing Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso to pray for misfortune to beset his rival to keep his title hopes alive. However, one of the beauties of Formula 1 and a factor which keeps the masses engaged throughout the season, is the fact you can never be quite certain what will happen come race day.

ART DIRECTOR: Steven Neumann

The legendary voice of the sport Murray Walker famously used to say ‘Anything can happen in Formula One and it usually does’. These are words that Alonso may well be repeating to himself as he bids to break Vettel’s stranglehold of the sport.

DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes

It is certainly a mountain for Alonso to climb but it is not impossible and you can guarantee the Spaniard has not given up on claiming a third title just yet.

SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson

While the spice in this year’s championship is starting to fade, excitement is already beginning to reach fever pitch regarding the 2014 campaign, following the news Kimi Raikkonen will return to Ferrari to join Alonso next year.

PARTNERS: Armor All Castrol Edge OzSpeedShop Dunlop Coates Hire Crimsafe Finance Ezi IRWIN Pirtek Proton

The Finn has agreed a deal last week to return to the Scuderia which will provide one of the most explosive driving forces in the championship’s history. Raikkonen is not one for team orders and will no doubt refuse to play second fiddle to Alonso, which in itself promises to deliver an intriguing storyline for next year. Raikkonen’s move to Ferrari has left a gaping hole at Lotus and that very seat could spark a number of drivers at midfield teams to up their game at Singapore this weekend. While Ferrari refugee Felipe Massa, who has made room for Raikkonen at the Maranello team, is also in the shop window hoping to keep his F1 career alive. Singapore’s street circuit nature brings with it an air of uncertainty with it’s tight and twisty corners and high chance of Safety Cars. So who’s to say Formula 1 cannot come up with another surprise this weekend.

Scuderia square-off Pairing Alonso and Raikkonen is risky business for Ferrari, writes Tom Howard

T

he return of Kimi Raikkonen to Ferrari for 2014 is certainly one of the surprises Formula One has sprung upon us and it will no doubt be the talking point for several months to come. The move to replace Felipe Massa with 2007 world champion Raikkonen has created arguably the most explosive driver line up since Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at McLaren during the late 1980’s. It’s certainly a high risk move from the Scuderia to pair two of F1’s best drivers and only time will tell if this strategy will pay off. History suggests housing two highly regarded world champions in the same team is hazzardous and potentially damaging. In doing so Ferrari has broken a tradition which harks all the way back to 1953. Prost and Senna is the benchmark for this and that partnership ended in plenty

www.speedcafe.com

of acrimony, team infighting and with Prost eventually leaving to join Ferrari in 1990. Both Alonso and Raikkonen are used to being team leaders and according to Ferrari they will be on an equal footing next year, meaning there won’t be a number two driver scenario as seen in the past with Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello and Massa. However, in Raikkonen and Alonso you have two championship proven and equally hungry drivers, so surely sparks will fly. Raikkonen’s predecessor Massa certainly seems to think so.

“I told the bosses to breathe as much as possible while they still can because it will be hard for them to breathe next season.”

Our proud platinum Raikkonen versus Alonso is thepartners ultimate

“I know both Fernando and Kimi on and off the track and I rate them as excellent drivers, but I’m afraid they will collide when sharing the team,” said Massa in an interview with Brazilian F1 broadcaster Galvao Bueno on TV Globo.

contrast. The Spaniard is flamboyant, fiery, outspoken and a team player compared to the ‘Iceman’ Raikkonen; who is outwardly emotionless, cool and forthright in his views on racing matters. ™

All-In-One Security

The pair have proved themselves to be equally as talented, securing three world titles between them and more than 50 Grand Prix victories. They’ve certainly enjoyed head-to-head battles too in the past most notably in 2006 for the world championship. Alonso in the Renault came out on top but it was Raikkonen who picked up more wins that season and would surely have taken the crown if his McLaren was more reliable.

Raikkonen of course has already tasted life at Ferrari. It brought him the 2007 world title but it is fair to say he rubbed people the wrong way including the boss Luca De Montezemolo. Raikkonen’s certainly doesn’t like being told what to do and you only have to look back at his famous ‘I know what I’m doing’ radio comments at last year’s race at Abu Dhabi to see evidence. For the Finn, a move back to Ferrari was a last resort to ensure he has car able to record wins in 2014, following the loss of his first choice seat at Red Bull. But his return does beg the question, why have Ferrari brought him back?

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

One plausible reason is to evoke a reaction from Alonso in a bid to try and extract the very best from the twotime world champion. Being harried by Raikkonen could achieve this but to what extent will it damage the team is unknown. Formula One fans will all remember how Alonso responded when he was pushed by then McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton in 2007. It cost both drivers the title and produced plenty of damaged relationships and some dirty tactics, something Ferrari and the tifosi will not stand for.

7

Perhaps this is all part of Ferrari’s long winded plan to lure Sebastian Vettel away from Red Bull. Mark Webber has already stated this week that he expects the German to move to Ferrari in the near future. Perhaps he will replace Raikkonen as a result of the explosive battle 2014 will produce. However, bosses at Ferrari will take note of the last team to pair two world champions together. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button enjoyed three seasons at McLaren from 2010-2012 and while they didn’t claim a world title, they worked well together bringing home wins and podiums causing very few of the predicted flare ups. Neither Alonso or Raikkonen have had much to say on the matter and it will surely be one of the biggest sub plots surrounding this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix. Hopefully we will all learn a bit more about the situation. So will it work? On paper the answer is probably no but as for entertainment and intrigue Alonso and Raikkonen at Ferrari will provide it by the bucket load next year.

Round 13 - Singapore I Track Details

Marina Bay Street Circuit Technical preview with the Lotus F1 team

THE CAR Rear wing Maximum downforce is required here, especially with so many low speed corners and frequent traction demands. Front wing Maximum downforce once again, as understeer could prove costly with the walls so close. Brakes Brakes are under constant use here. Although none of the braking demands are individually severe, the relentless nature of continual braking gives scarce opportunity for cooling. This affects the discs, pads and even the brake callipers themselves. Suspension There are several high kerbs around the circuit requiring good suspension compliance, although Turn 10 has been re-profiled for this year, meaning the very high kerbs previously in place through that particular corner will be different. Continual braking demands also call for a softer car; a requirement balanced against wanting to run the car as low as possible without wearing the plank too much.

www.speedcafe.com

Tyres Pirelli’s supersoft compound makes a return alongside the medium, which is a change from the 2012 allocation of soft and supersoft. With 23 corners, the tyres have to perform very well under traction and braking. One of the biggest causes of tyre wear is wheelspin, so rear suspension will be set up to give maximum longitudinal grip. Singapore is a long race – normally running right up to the 2 hour limit – which puts further stress on the tyres; particularly as the cars carry one of the heaviest fuel loads of the year. One factor in favour of the tyres is that – being a night race – the track temperature drops from a peak of around 50°C in the day to closer to 30°C during running times.

speeds of around 290kph reached before Sheares corner. This is followed by hard braking to around 90kph at Turn 3. Approaching Turn 7 The fastest part of the track, with speeds of around 298kph reached before the sharp left hander of Memorial Corner. Turns 13 & 18 Two of the slowest parts of the track, with speeds of around 80kph and extensive kerb usage for the quickest line.

14 OurTurn proud platinum Another slow corner taken at justpartners 85kph. Lighting During the event, 108,423 metres of power cables, 240 steel pylons and around 1,600 light projectors with a total power requirement of 3,180,000 watts will be used. With an illumination measurement of around 3,000 lux, the lighting will be four times brighter than that of most sports stadiums. ™

Engine With an average speed of under 170kph, engine maps are designed to target driveability through the lower revs. Of the 23 corners 10 are taken in second or first, 7 in third and only 1 is taken in fourth gear, meaning the engine is working at between 8,000 and 13,000rpm for the majority of the corner apexes and exits.

THE Circuit Approaching Turn 1 The second fastest part of the track, with

All-In-One Security

Kerbs Although kerbs are used extensively here, the majority are relatively flat. The exception to this in the past has been Turn 10, however this corner has been be modified for the coming weekend.

Round 13 - Singapore I Bagman

10

The Bagman says...

C

oming off the back of consecutive victories at Spa and Monza it is becoming increasingly difficult to put a case against Sebastian Vettel recording another triumph in Singapore. The German’s record at the Marina Bay will also send shivers down the spines of the rest of the F1 paddock. In the Grand Prix’s short five year history the reigning champion has never finished outside of the top six and has been victorious in the previous two years. For the good of the championship, Vettel’s rivals must strike to avoid the Red Bull star from waltzing towards a fourth world title. Unfortunately for the German’s nearest challenger Fernando Alonso, Ferraris pace on street circuits has not been startling. Case

in point being Monaco in may where the Spaniard could only muster a seventh place finish while Felipe Massa crashed. Ferrari will have to hope development work for this race results in a significant improvement upon their showing on the Monaco streets. But Alonso does have a strong record in Singapore with two wins from the five races to draw confidence from. Arguably the smart money could be placed on Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, who proved their pace on street circuits at Monaco this season. Rosberg’s pole and win at the principality confirmed that the Mercedes seems at home on narrow circuits aided by its supreme straight line speed. Mark Webber cannot be ruled out either in

the other Red Bull as he will be desperate to claim a victory before the lights go out on his F1 career. Considered a master of street circuits with two wins at Monaco, it will be worth keeping an eye on the Aussie. Safety Cars are almost a foregone conclusion at Marina Bay which can often throw a spanner in the works, forcing teams to think on their feet. This factor could bring other drivers into play especially the Lotus pair of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean, armed with their new long wheel base version of their car, which is yet to really shine. Likewise midfield runners such as Force India and Toro Rosso could also find themselves in the mix as strategy here is only second to Monaco in importance.
