F1’s wake up call

It’s one of the jewels in the Formula One crown. To win at Spa Francorchamps is a badge of honour and the confirmation of a driver’s true skill.

Following the mid season summer break with the ultimate test of Spa is a great wake up call for the Formula 1 teams and drivers. Plenty of intrigue surrounds this weekend’s Bel-gian Grand Prix too, as the title race enters its crucial second half. With Lewis Hamilton coupling his Mercedes’ supreme raw speed with clinical strategy to win the Hungarian Grand Prix three weeks ago, it appears a four way dice for the title will play out for the remainder of the season. Only time will tell how it plays out, but following Fernando Alonso’s post Hungary com-ments about the lack of pace at Ferrari which forced president Luca Di Montezemolo into a rare defensive statement, rest assured we can expect Ferrari to fight hard in the second half. But the biggest sub plot surrounding the Belgian Grand Prix is the ongoing saga over who will replace Mark Webber at Red Bull. Happily for Australian fans, Kimi Raikkonen has now officially been ruled out of the running by his management, leaving it a matter of when, not if, Daniel Ricciardo will be confirmed in the role. This has now prompted new rumours Kimi will now join back up with Ferrari to replace Felipe Massa as the silly season shows no signs of relenting. Another intriguing development is the return of Pat Symonds to the F1 paddock as he joins up with the struggling Williams team this weekend. With 2009 Renault ‘Crashgate’ affair sanctions served and confined to the history books, Symonds and success in Formula One go hand in hand. Titles with Benetton and then Renault have proved he has a gift for transforming teams. While attending one race meeting won’t make much difference, his story at Williams is one to keep an eye on. Few have conquered Spa, one of the last remaining classic F1 circuits and it remains to be seen whether a new face will join the elite and the next twist in the quest to become world champion.

The rise of Ricciardo Can he repay Red Bull’s faith? I

t appears Red Bull’s faith in the development of Daniel Ricciardo is going to pay off with the Aussie tipped as the man most likely to take over as Mark Webber’s replacement at the reigning champion F1 constructor. The expected announcement of his graduation from Torro Rosso to Red Bull Racing would complete a journey for Ricciardo, whose relationship with the energy drinks firm has helped develop and guide him through the lower formulas to the pinnacle of motor racing. Filling Webber’s shadow at Red Bull would bring an end to the first part for the F1 silly season. Ever since Webber announced his retirement from motor racing’s top tier to go sportscar racing with Porsche, speculation of his successor to partner three-time champion Vettel has been rife.

www.speedcafe.com

First, Ricciardo was touted for the role before being usurped by Lotus‘ Kimi Raikkonen. With the 2007 world champion out of contract at the Enstone team at the end of the year, a move appeared to be increasingly more likely considering his previous link up with Red Bull during his brief rally career.

Speculation grew further following the Hungarian Grand Prix with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso emerging as a possible contender. With significant time remaining on his contract at Maranello and a firm statement from boss Luca Di Montezemolo denying the prospect of a switch, the rumours subsided.

Round 11 - Spa Francorchamps I Cover Story

All the while Ricciardo continued to be at the centre of the storm eclipsing Torro Rosso and Red Bull backed team mate Jean-Eric Vergne in the process. The writing seemed to be on the wall for Vergne when Daniel was selected to test with Red Bull at the Young Driver Test at Silverstone in July, posting a best time just three tenths shy of Vettel. And now it looks like the 24-year-old is set for the big time with a drive at world championship winning team. While many will be shocked Ricciardo has managed to secure the seat ahead of Raikkonen, it shouldn’t be forgotten that the Aussie has been working with Red Bull since 2008 when the firm first invested in the rising star. Ricciardo’s road to Formula 1 started in Perth, racing in the Western Australian Formula Ford Championship driving a rickety 15-year-old Van Diemen. After several struggles, the award of a Formula BMW Asia scholarship kickstarted his career, finishing third in the championship and fifth in the world final. A move to Europe beckoned in 2007 with Ricciardo securing a deal to join the competitive world of Formula Renault in Italy. After a season of finding his feet, he struck gold in claiming the 2008 Western European Cup and finishing runner-up to Valteri Bottas in the Euro Cup.

His success didn’t go unnoticed and certainly struck a chord with Markko, the chief talent spotter for the Red Bull Junior team and he was swiftly signed up. And so the Red Bull journey began. A campaign in British Formula 3 loomed with Carlin in 2009 and Ricciardo took to the challenging UK circuits like a duck to water, storming to the title in his debut season with seven victories. Such immediate success saw him land the role of F1 test driver with Torro Rosso and a run with the Red Bull backed Tech 1 squad in Formula Renault 3.5, which resulted with him missing out on the title by two points to Mikhail Aleshin. The F1 testing duties with Torro Rosso continued the following season alongside a second Formula Renault 3.5 campaign before an unlikely F1 race seat opportunity arose. Ricciardo took a gamble to replace Narain Karthikeyan alongside Vitantonio Liuzzi at the struggling HRT team. The move did provide 11 Grands Prix to gain F1 race experience but in such an uncompetitive car it could have damaged Ricciardo’s reputation.

However, it proved to be just the tonic he wanted as it convinced the powers at Red Bull to promote Ricciardo from test driver to race driver at Torro Rosso for 2012 alongside Vergne. Securing a points finish in his first race justified the decision and he went on score five more points finishes, but ended the year six points behind his team mate. Fast forward to this season and Ricciardo has already outscored the 10 points he accrued in 2012. Despite being two points behind his team mate, his performances in both qualifying and races look to have been enough to secure him a promotion to the reigning world champions alongside Vettel for 2014. For Ricciardo the plunge into motorsport and the arduous journey into the unknown has paid off, but what remains to be seen is whether he can mix it with the world’s best on the biggest stage and perhaps land a world championship. Despite possessing only a career best finish of seventh and yet to secure a podium, Red Bull clearly knows it’s onto a winner.

Round 11 - Spa Francorchamps I Cover Story

Kimi: The Spa Master S

pa Francorchamps tests a driver to its very core and while Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Masa have all made the trip to the top step in recent years, there is only one Spa master from the current crop of drivers.

Now with the prancing horse, Raikkonen stormed to pole position in qualifying and went to convert his hard work with a comfortable lights-to-flag win to conquer Spa for a third time.

Lotus‘ Kimi Raikkonen has accrued four victories at the daunting arena in the last decade leaving him just two wins behind the most successful driver in the Grand Prix’s history, Michael Schumacher. On the eve of the 2013 race, we take a look back at Raikkonen’s four Spa successes.

2005 - Raikkonen blitzes field to record back-to-back Spa wins

His 2007 triumph in many ways is Kimi’s most impressive as he never for one moment looked fazed throughout the weekend. Alonso and Hamilton fought hard amongst themselves which left Kimi to complete a relatively troubled free run to the flag with team mate Felipe Massa in tow.

Kimi returned to Spa in 2005 with a much improved McLaren underneath him and he certainly showed he was to become a force to be reckoned with around Spa Francorchamps.

2004 - Kimi issues Spa surprise in ailing McLaren

With five victories already under his belt, he wasted little time in adding his sixth of the season at Spa. He qualified on the front row alongside team mate Juan Pablo Montoya but tricky Spa like wet and changeable conditions arrived on race day.

The year undoubtedly belonged to Ferrari and Michael Schumacher but arguably one of the highlights of a largely predictable season was Kimi’s triumph at Spa. Only five drivers won races in 2004 and this was one for the few occasions Schumacher was beaten outright in his pomp.

However, Raikkonen, who was pushing Renault’s Alonso hard in the title race, was unperturbed as he adapted brilliantly to the conditions to storm to a dominant win, finishing nearly half a minute ahead of Alonso and Button who came home in second and third.

McLaren had produced one of the worst cars in their history and spent the majority of the season on the back foot and battling in the midfield. However, something on August 29 clicked for Raikkonen and McLaren. Despite starting a lowly 10th, the Finn made a blistering start and found himself in sixth behind Schumacher despite contact with Sauber of Felipe Massa. He soon moved up to third with moves on Schumacher and David Coulthard. Raikkonen passed leader Jarno Trulli in the pits and his Renault team mate Fernando Alonso retire from the lead with an oil leak passing the lead to Kimi. Two pit stops and a safety car period later Kimi found himself in the lead and he surged to a famous win ahead of Ferrari’s Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Second for Schumacher secured the 2004 crown, his seventh and last.

www.speedcafe.com

2009 - Raikkonen denies Fisichella shock Force India Victory Kimi’s fourth victory at Spa was arguably his toughest despite his main opposition coming from the Force India of Giancarlo Fisichella.

Our proud platinum partners Without a win since the 2008 Spanish Grand Prix, Raikkonen and Ferrari were hungry for glory but the weekend didn’t get off to the best of starts qualifying only sixth on the grid with the Fisichella’s Force India securing a shock pole position. ™

All-In-One Security

2007 - Kimi wraps up perfect Spa win for Ferrari Embroiled in a title fight with McLaren duo of Alonso and rookie Lewis Hamilton, Raikkonen managed to get the upper hand on his rivals with a perfect performance at Spa.

Fisichella’s pole was by no means a fluke as he justified with significant race pace which looked as through it would be rewarded with a victory. Raikkonen grabbed the lead in the early stages but he was pushed hard all the way by Fisichella and in the end he only took the victory by less than a second.

Round 11 - Spa Francorchamps I Track Details

9

Spa Francorchamps Circuit Spa Francorchamps circuit preview with the Lotus F1 team

THE CAR Front Wing We use comparably more front wing here compared to lower speed tracks to help diminish understeer in the high speed corners. Rear Wing Spa is very much an aerodynamic efficiency circuit where you need a reasonable amount of downforce without too much detrimental drag. We run a similar amount of rear wing to Canada which is a medium downforce setting. Suspension This is primarily a high speed circuit and there isn’t much use of the kerbs, so suspension is tailored to high speed balance rather than low speed travel. Brakes There are not many braking demands here which means the focus is on keeping the brakes warm so they work immediately when required. There are three major

www.speedcafe.com

braking areas; into the first corner, the Turn 5 chicane, and then the former bus stop chicane. These sections also offer the main overtaking opportunities. Tyres This is a circuit which puts high demand on the tyres. Also, the weather in the Ardennes can be very variable – even over the course of a lap – so tyre choice is crucial.

changes from downhill to uphill. Good engine power is required for the uphill drag. Turn 5 Top speeds of 330kph – one of the highest of the season – before braking down to 3rd gear and 140kph for this right hander. Turn 8 Rivage provides a good challenge as it is a medium speed 180 degree corner heading straight into Turn 9. Good balance and change of direction are required here.

Our proud platinum partners

Engine You need an engine with a strong top end here; especially for the drag up Raidillon and the Kemmel Straight which follows, as this is slightly uphill all the way to Turn 5. Elsewhere too, good horsepower is rewarded in many sections of the lap, especially due to its undulating nature.

THE Circuit Turn 1 A tight first corner with heavy braking down to 60kph before leading into the downhill section. Turn 2: The run down Eau Rouge and into Raidillion creates extreme suspension compression as the relief

Turn 10 Pouhon is a high speed left-hander, with entry taken at nearly 300kph. Turns 14 + 15: Turn 14 is taken at 140kph before the cars accelerate through Curve Paul Frère – which is taken at 100kph faster than that – before leading into the flat out Turns 16 and 17. ™

All-In-One Security

Turn 18 With heavy braking into the chicane after a prolonged high speed section, the brakes need to be ready instantly. Turn 18 provides a good overtaking opportunity.

Round 11 - Spa Francorchamps I Bagman

10

The Bagman says...

T

he spotlight is well and truly on Mercedes this weekend following Lewis Hamilton’s first win for the German mark last time out in Hungary. The capitulating form displayed by the team across the first half of the season needs to be behind it if Hamilton is to challenge for the title. The commanding nature of the Briton’s Hungarian win was a convincing statement, but with modern Formula 1 cars and tyres proving so sensitive to track conditions, anything could happen this weekend. Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing have

won the last two races here, with the raw downforce of the Adrian Newey-designed cars proving a sight to behold across the back half of the circuit. Another Vettel victory this weekend would be a blow not only to Hamilton and Mercedes, but to the German’s closest title pursuers Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso. Raikkonen’s future has been the talk of the paddock in recent weeks, but the Finn isn’t one to let such things distract him. His record at Spa is impressive, achieving four victorious during his time with McLaren and Ferrari.

What may suit both Raikkonen and Alonso is the wide-open nature of Spa, which renders qualifying – often a weakness for both the Lotus and Ferrari packages this year – less important. Lotus will need to have its double-DRS well and truly sorted if Raikkonen and team-mate Romain Grosjean are to be in with a fighting chance, however. Of the rest, Force India has traditionally gone well here and should be pushing for points finishers, while the 2012 race proved a rare double points finish for Toro Rosso that the humble Italian squad will be keen to repeat.
