FERRARI PLOTS FIGHTBACK Its been Ferrari’s worst run for almost two decades...
Ferrari instigates sweeping changes
F
errari has shuffled the deck chairs and chopped out bureaucratic roadblocks as it tries to push for renewed competitiveness. Fernando Alonso managed to crack Ferrari’s first 2014 podium when he held on for third ahead of a rapidly closing Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo last time out at Shanghai. The much needed podium result in China came in front of Marco Mattiacci’s first race weekend in the chair as team boss. It became clear that Ferrari were seeking immediate solutions for its lack of competitiveness following the resignation of Stefano Domenicali after the Bahrain Grand Prix. Ferrari has been open in its pursuit of stepping up the commitment of the team. It is working on ways of accelerating development with president Luca di Montezemolo aiming to streamline internal processes. It is hoped that greater efficiency in decision making will bring forward Ferrari’s ability to make the crucial necessary performance gains it needs against 2014 tearaways Mercedes.
www.speedcafe.com
Ferrari has already admitted that Maranello has cut back the number of consultants and admissions with the aim of boosting key areas to improve the performance of the F14 T. The heat too has been turned up on suppliers who have been ordered to shorten the turnaround time on parts. The first European grand prix of the season at Catalunya may not see a magic bullet for Ferrari, however it will almost certainly signal the start of the squad’s 2014 salvage plans.

Spain betting: Odds on, look on B
ased on a near perfect record following the opening four grands prix of 2014, Mercedes completely dominates the betting for Catalunya. Lewis Hamilton is on the top line of prices at $1.60 while partner Nico Rosberg is a $3 chance to win the first European F1 event of the season. These cramped odds come virtue of the fact that Mercedes has not looked like losing a race this season. Having kicked off with a win at Albert Park, Rosberg has finished second to Hamilton in each of the next three races. If not for Hamilton’s engine failure on lap two at Albert Park, Mercedes would have

scooped the quinella in all races to date. Any team which threatens to break the Mercedes domination would also certainly have to rely on unreliability or accidents striking the Brackley operation. The next closest in the betting is Daniel Ricciardo at $13 who finished fourth behind the Mercedes pair and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in Shanghai but was a
significant 27.1s in arrears of Hamilton. Both Sebastien Vettel and Alonso are next at $15 and from there its big odds the field. On results Ferrari has the best record, winning at Catalunya seven times since 2001 including Alonso’s win there on his home soil last year.

Ferrari Plots Fightback I
ts been Ferrari’s worst run for almost two decades. The statistics have made for some grim reading by bosses at the Scuderia’s Maranello fortress. Italy’s famous Prancing Horse has not won a race since Fernando Alonso’s triumph at last year’s Spanish Grand Prix exactly 12 months ago. To make matters worse, the 2014 spec Ferrari has flattered to deceive so far this season thus extending the dry spell. After showing promising signs in preseason testing, the F14 T has recorded just one podium from eight starts, leaving the team a staggering 102 points behind the pace setting Mercedes. Granted, Mercedes has stolen a march on the opposition at this stage but the deficit between the Silver Arrows and the Ferraris has forced the team to redress the balance. As a result, the axe has fallen on team principal Stefano Domenicali, who resigned from his position held since 2007, prior to the Chinese Grand Prix. He was subsequently replaced by Ferrari North America automotive boss Marco Mattiacci. Mattiacci’s appointment is understood to be a temporary fix instigated by president Luca Di Montezemolo with speculation linking former Renault and Mercedes technical director Bob Bell to the team in a
permanent role. However, the change of leadership is the first sign of restructuring process at Maranello aimed to transform the team’s fortunes and recapture past glories. Di Montezemolo has also wielded his sword on the amount of outside consultants used, in favour of focussing more resource on areas where the team can make swift significant gains. He has also pushed external suppliers to speed up the turn around time for new parts.
“The aim of all these changes is for Ferrari to be able to react more quickly, ready to gather and make the most of information both drivers provide during race simulations, but above all, whenever they take to the track,” a statement published on the Ferrari website revealed. While it is early days, the F1 paddock should be concerned as Di Montezemolo’s plans show the team is not willing to just slip down the order. It is perhaps ironic all of these changes

have come prior to the this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix which in the past has been a Ferrari stronghold. The 23 races held at Barcelona’s Catalunya Circuit has yielded eight wins and 20 podium finishes and it is the last venue the team climbed the top step of the podium.

Hopes of a repeat of last year’s success are slim with Mercedes seemingly unstoppable at the front. However, Alonso‘s battling drive to third in China could just be turning point for the team. Although, the Spaniard is not getting carried away by one podium result and is urging his team to up its game ahead of his home event. “The car was under-performing in many areas - it was not just one problem,” said Alonso “We need to be more efficient, have better aerodynamics, better traction, better power. We lack some big performance in the first races. “[In China the improvement] was nothing really big in one area, just small steps here, small steps there - better power delivery, better software, putting everything in place, all the settings, and giving a little bit more aero efficiency and a little bit more power. “We have bigger margins, because we started in a lower performance, but we cannot dream too much because people

will not be watching TV from here to Barcelona. “The other teams will bring a couple of tenths to Barcelona, [so] we need to bring a couple of tenths, plus something, if we want to catch up. “That’s the challenge we are facing now. It’s not that we need to develop the car at a normal rate; we need to do the normal development, plus something.” While the Prancing Horse is far from its accustomed place in the F1 hierarchy, it appears there could well be light at the end of the tunnel.

Nigel Mansell claimed the first Spanish Grand Prix held at the Circuit de Catalunya after coming through a titanic encounter held in tricky wet conditions. The much needed victory gave the Williams driver a real boost in the 1991 title race as he capitalised on a rare mistake from rival Ayrton Senna. Mansell entered the weekend suffering with an ankle injury but he put the pain to one side to produce one of his most impressive drives.

Gerhard Berger led initially with Senna, Mansell, Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi scraping for second. The Brit showcased his fighting spirit as he went wheel-to-wheel with Senna with the pair separated by millimeters to grab the position off the Brazilian. Senna suffered a rare spin later in the race he eventually came home in fifth. Meanwhile, Mansell powered on to take the victory by 11.3 seconds from a hard charging Alain Prost, who started sixth, with Riccardo Patrese in third.

Circuit Style With the exception of Melbourne, itself different by nature of being a street circuit, the season so far has consisted of some of the more modern circuit designs. These tend to reveal more specific areas of car performance rather than a complete package. Barcelona, by contrast, is very much a more traditional style of race track. Not only is the circuit well-known amongst the teams, it also provides a good reference to how the performance of a car compares to its competitors. It is a true test of a car, requiring a balance of strong aerodynamic, engine and mechanical performance.
aerodynamic or mechanical. Combined, these factors are what make Barcelona a significant landmark on the calendar.
Upgrades Barcelona is one of the major performance upgrade events of the season. Part of the reasoning behind this is that, for flyaway races such as the first four rounds, bringing bulky packages such as floors, bodywork sets and wings is both difficult and expensive. Obviously, every team wants to be as competitive as possible at all times. But there is a balance to find in terms of cost versus performance. Barcelona, therefore, is where we will see teams bringing major package upgrades: fundamental re-workings of their cars as opposed to just individual developments. Where some cars were quite closely matched in performance prior to this race, the first European round of the season will likely see small shifts in performance: moving some teams slightly ahead of others where they perhaps would not have been previously. Furthermore, with four races of the season now complete, rival teams will have had sufficient time to evaluate and attempt to replicate clever design features seen on other cars, be they
Overtaking Overtaking has historically been a difficult task at Barcelona and this remains true even with the inclusion of two DRS zones. While there were a notable number of passes made in 2013, this was triggered by significant tyre degradation and a varied range of strategies deployed during the race. Although there are two main straights around the circuit, they are not as long as the last few tracks visited thus far this season. To make a passing manoeuvre stick, the driver must therefore be as close as possible to the car in front exiting the preceding corner. The nature of Turns Nine and Sixteen, the two corners leading onto each straight, makes this a tough task. Both are tricky, high-speed corners where drivers are very much on the edge, making it all too easy for the front end to wash away in the turbulent air of the car in front. Mistakes are often seen as drivers push beyond the limit in an attempt to close the gap through Turn Nine, attempting to pass on the run down to Turn Ten.
Track Surface The track surface at Barcelona is visibly rippled into Turns One and Ten, the braking zones at the end of each of the main straights. This is a characteristic rarely seen amongst venues on the current calendar and can be attributed to the age of the circuit, as the tarmac has effectively been pulled around over time. This can be felt by the drivers but is also visible from off-board camera footage of certain cars.
srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™
ytiruceS enO-nI-llA
Tyres Barcelona is one of the tougher circuits of the year in terms of tyre degradation, hence the allocation of hard and medium compounds for this event. Turns Three and Nine, in addition to the Turn Seven and Eight combination, put high amounts of energy through the tyres. The abrasive tarmac seen at Barcelona also tears the surface of the tyres a little bit more than normal. These characteristics combine to generate high tyre temperatures, particularly on the left-hand side. With the relatively short straights on offer around the circuit, there is limited time for the energy and temperature within the tyres to be dissipated. Through the tighter sequence of corners towards the end of the lap in particular, the drivers will feel the effect of the tyres overheating, as the continuous sequence of high energy corners which precedes the final sector offers little respite. Weather Unlike Melbourne or Shanghai where weather conditions can vary quite significantly from one day to the next, the Barcelona climate tends to remain constant once the weekend is underway. From an engineering perspective this reduces the challenge, as the emphasis on predicting weather patterns for the purpose of optimising cooling packages and tyre preparation is reduced. However, year-on-year temperatures in the region can vary from around 18 to 29 degrees. This presents its own challenge in that, until the teams arrive at the circuit, it can be tough to know what solutions are required to best suit the conditions.
