After winning the Sandown 500 and finishing a narrow second in the Bathurst 1000 Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell are the shortpriced favourites to carry home the Pirtek Enduro Cup. The aforementioned are pair listed as raging hot favourites ahead of their Red Bull Racing Australia Holden team- mates Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff. Whincup/Dumbrell all the rage U

p to a dozen pairings remain a mathematical shot of winning the PIRTEK Enduro Cup this weekend at the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600 as Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell have been rated overwhelming favourites for the first race. Leading betting agency Ladbrokes. com. au has assessed the pair as $2.75 favourites to take the first 102-lap race on Saturday. The sister Red Bull Racing Australia Holden of Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff is on the second line of betting at $4.75 while recent Bathurst 1000 champions Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards are at the reasonably liberal price of $5.50. The second Ford Performance Racing Pepsi Max Falcon of Will Davison and Steve Owen is the only other car assessed under double figure odds at $9. Those quartet of aforementioned chances also occupy the top four on the PIRTEK Enduro Cup ladder which is a triple crownstyle prize comprising of the Sandown 500,

Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 600. Taking into consideration the unpredictability of the 2.96km Surfers Paradise street circuit, which has seen an average of 3.8 safety cars per race since the track was shortened from 4.5km in 2010, there are a number of other combinations that represent decent value. The IRWIN Racing #4 E63 AMG of Lee Holdsworth and Craig Baird sits fifth in the Enduro Cup points standings and are rated at a generous $81. With the track expected to suit the unique characteristics of the Erebus Mercedes E63 AMG-badged cars and the strength that the former Stone Brothers Racing operation has shown at the circuit - particularly in its shortened form - the #4 could be a darkhorse. The Fujitsu GRM combination of Scott McLaughlin and Jack Perkins are offering good value at $31 heading into Saturday. McLaughlin, a double race winner this year, and Perkins who has experience on

the Gold Coast track, are rated strongly to walk away with a surfboard trophy traditionally given to placegetters. Both HRT cars of Garth Tander and Nick Percat and James Courtney and Greg Murphy are on the same line of betting at $12. The best of the Nissan Altimas in the Race 1 betting market is the #36 of Michael Caruso and Dan Gaunt at $151. It remains to be seen how the four Altimas will perform on the Gold Coast, however the tight sections in the latter part of the lap should suit the cars. he Surfers Paradise street track was first constructed in 1991 for the inaugural running of the American IndyCar race. In the early years, the V8 touring cars were not included on the program when NASCARS and AUSCARS were favoured. Touring cars did not make an appearance until 1994. The Aussie V8s missed 1995 but have raced at the Gold Coast street track every year since 1996 and have been part of the Championship proper since 2002.

Mark Winterbottom, who last start claimed his maiden Bathurst 1000 win alongside the now three-times Great Race winner Steven Richards, has struck a purple patch of form. The Ford Performance Racing star has out-scored every other competitor since Event 7 at Townsville in early July. From Townsville, Queensland Raceway, Sandown and Bathurst no driver has collectively scored more points than Winterbottom who has shaved 202 points off series leader Jamie Whincup. As far as Surfers Paradise form goes, Winterbottom has strong form lines, winning two races and landing on the podium in seven of the last eight races. This is the 12th year that the Gold Coast race has counted for Championship points. It is also the fourth consecutive year of the co-driver format after V8s took

top billing following the withdrawal of America’s open-wheel CART/Champ Car (1991-2007) and IndyCar (2008) classes and the no-show of the now defunct A1GP (2009). Following a scaling back in spending, this year sees team’s allowed to run domestic co-drivers after it became compulsory to run international number two drivers in the last couple of years. As good as Winterbottom’s current form is, it will come as no surprise that Whincup has the best recent record in the race. Leading the Championship by 114 points, Whincup has three wins from the last five races at Surfers. The four-times series champion, who will record his 300th start in the Championship in the second 300km race on Sunday, has won a total of six races at the event, one less Garth Tander who has the best all-time

winning record. Furthermore Whincup has scorched to pole four times in a row after topping the points at the previous two Gold Coast 600 events with Sebastien Bourdais as his codriver. As the unofficial long distance triple crown that is the Pirtek Enduro Cup comes to a conclusion, Whincup and Dumbrell hold a 42-point lead over the #888 Red Bull Commodore of Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff. In context, the gap is miniscule with 300 points on offer across both 102-lap races. There are 12 drivers in the field who are making their debut in a V8 Supercar around the 15-turn circuit. Four of those - Maro Engel, Scott McLaughlin, Alex Premat and Matt Halliday have yet to race at the circuit in any category.

Of the others Jonny Reid, David Russell and Dan Gaunt have all negotiated the circuit in the onemake Porsche Carrera Cup. Nick Percat, recent NZ V8 SuperTourer winner Chaz Mostert, Ash Walsh and Scott Pye have experienced the street track in Formula Fords while Chris Pither has previously won in the V8 Ute category at the circuit. Porsche star Craig Baird, who is again partnering Lee Holdsworth in the #4 Irwin entry, has not raced a V8 Supercar at the circuit since 2005 when he drove a WPS Ford. It has also been a long time between drinks at Surfers behind the wheel of a V8 Supercar for Dean Canto, who last ran in 2007 while veteran Paul Morris has not run in the class since 2008, his last season as a full-timer in the top grade. In terms of strategy, all teams have drafted in the almost certain factor of a safety car

intervening at least once in each of the twin 300km races. There have only been three of the last 26 Gold Coast V8 races running clean without caution periods since the event became part of the Championship Series in 2002. It last ran without a safety car period for the second race in 2007. Since the inclusion of the longer races from 2010 there has been an average safety car period of 3.8 per race. The finishing rate of the field runs at an average of 86 per cent since 2002. That figure drops to 76 per cent since the introduction of the co-driver format from 2010 and the extra distances. Another statistic worth considering is that the entire starting field has never finished any of the V8 races which include pre-championship ‘exhibition’ events and current Championship points races.

SURFERS PARADISE STREET CIRCUIT T

he Surfers Paradise Street Circuit is one of the busiest for a driver - here IRWIN Racing’s Lee Holdsworth explains in detail a lap of the track. As I start the lap I’m in 6th gear across the start/finish line on what is the front straight, but it’s really a very long right hander. I brake hard close to the 150 metre mark and go back to 3rd and turn into the first chicane. I use as mush curb as possible and go out towards the wall, but if a driver is not precise there is a big tyre bundle on the exit which can snag cars very quickly. I get onto full throttle on exit and hold it in 3rd gear right on the limiter and head towards the hairpin. This is a very good passing opportunity and don’t be surprised to see guys make a late lunge and go sideby-side. It is one of the slowest corners in the entire series and I drop back to 1st gear for turn-in. I aim to keep it tight on inside

curb and then out of the hairpin it’s a shortshift to second gear as the camber of the road falls away. Then it’s through the gearbox up towards the beachside chicane. This is my favourite part of the track as I drop it back to 3rd and then take the sequence of corners left,right,left,right, left. It is very easy to get this chicane wrong. A driver can lose plenty of time or even worse end up in another one of the tyre bundles that seem to line the track on exit. I am quickly back on the throttle and get up to fourth gear through a very fast right hander where you use all the road nearly scraping the wall. Turn 11 is where the track heads off the beachfront. It’s important to brake in a straight line as I drop to second gear and turn left on what is a cambered corner on the inside. Those who get a good run from the beachfront chicane can make a passing move here. It’s important to turn in early

as this gives the car plenty of front grip. Get it wrong and once again there is an unforgiving concrete barrier on the outside which will end your race. I need to ensure the car is carrying plenty of speed through what is a short straight with another kink in 3rd gear. Drop it to 2nd and hard left into Turn 12, once again using as much track as possible on exit. Then it’s important to get a good line into Turn 13, using the curbs and shifting into 3rd gear up towards the final corner. You approach the final bend staying in 3rd as I dart right and drop it into 2nd gear before the tight left hander. There are some bumps here which unloads the front right, so it’s very easy to lock a brake and wash out towards the fence. I use as much curb as possible and once the front of the car gains grip it’s onto the gas and through the gears back towards the start/finish.
