Races 16/17 - Ipswich I Introduction

Season of Endurance The phrase ‘Season of Endurance’ has been used by V8 Supercars in recent years to co-promote its two longest races, but in 2012 it has taken on a whole new meaning.

For many teams, the enormity of the task of running a Car of the Future development program alongside its regular racing operations is really starting to hit home. The traditionally draining back half of the season - which this year packs six events into just nine weeks - has yet to begin, but there’ll be no shortage of weary faces in the paddock at Queensland Raceway this weekend. Counting the ‘days in lieu’ owed to engineering staff alone would likely give a significant insight into the strain currently being placed on staff as the teams continue to design, produce, and in some cases redesign, components to the continually evolving 2013 regulations. Triple Eight’s first team-built COTF will sit proudly in the paddock for fans to observe this weekend, but the task of having it ready in time has been far from an easy one. The need to complete the car with its own components was a much-publicised challenge brought about by the lack of complete regulations, but the stories of engines being installed and mapped in the wee hours of the morning give an indication as to the dedication required by the crews involved. The big teams of course have workshop-based staff that can continue to toil over the new vehicles while the bulk of the crew are away racing, but the drain on resources is unquestionable. Time, as well as money, is proving increasingly precious, and the form of this year’s field as the season enters its second half will be more interesting to watch than ever as some teams shift a greater and greater emphasis onto the new vehicles. Triple Eight and Ford Performance Racing have shared all 15 race wins between them so far this year, and it’s hard to imagine that the behind-thescenes slog will do anything but strengthen the collective dominance of the category’s heavy-hitters. For the Triple Eight crew members required to return to the track for their COTF’s first proper test on Monday, at least they will likely do so with a hint of champagne still in the air... Green means go!

t’s been a tough season for Dick Johnson Racing. The proud Queensland squad expanded to four cars in the 2011/2012 off-season, adding cars for Steve Owen and Dean Fiore alongside second-year driver James Moffat and team stalwart Steven Johnson. The quartet head to Queensland Raceway just 18th, 21st, 27th and 15th in the points respectively, but can draw some confidence from a rejuvenated effort late-time out

in Townsville that was highlighted by a second-row start for Owen on Saturday.

Championship, but your team has only just completed its first test day ...

In the below interview, Steven Johnson tells Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley about the team’s recent test day, his goals for the remainder of the season and why it’s important not to be distracted by the incoming Car of the Future...

STEVE JOHNSON: It’s been a massive year, for both our team and everyone in the sport. For us, we’ve changed to four cars, and everyone has the new Car of the Future coming along next year.

SPEEDCAFE: We’re more than half way through the 2012 V8 Supercars

Up until now, there was no point going testing until we had a decent program to test with. There’s no use going to

7

Queensland Raceway to change springs and bars. It’s a waste of a day and money. We wanted to make sure that we had some key things to test and a proper program behind it. We’re going to do at least one more test day before Sandown, and probably have another one before Bathurst too. We’ll get to our four days pretty easily. We’re working through it, doing it methodically and edging our way back to the

front. Townsville was a good meeting for us, and now with a test day under our belt, it’s hopefully all a step in the right direction and we can really start to get some decent results. SPEEDCAFE: Townsville saw all four DJR cars enjoy a good turn of speed over different parts of the weekend. Is there something that you can put that down to? JOHNSON: I hate saying “going back to basics,” but we’re going back to stuff we

know and what we work with best. That’s pretty much what we’ve tried to do. We could quite easily get yourself lost in trying to take new directions, trying to find that massive loss of speed that we feel we’re missing this year. When you think about it, sure, we’re not at the pointy end like we were in for most of last year’s championship, but we’re not far Continue on page 9 >>

off. If we only gain a little bit, we’re going to gain a lot. We certainly haven’t lost our head. We’re all thinking the right way. We’ll just keep working hard and edging our way back forward. It’s very easy to lose sight of this car, because of the Car of the Future, but as I said to everybody at DJR, podiums and wins this year will feel as good this year compared to what they’ll feel next year. We can’t lose our focus on the job that we’ve got to do. SPEEDCAFE: So after a stronger run at Townsville, plus a test, what’s your expectations ahead of your home track’s race this weekend? JOHNSON: We have a lot of confidence. We had strong results from both cars (Johnson took a seventh and a sixth from the two races). I really think that we can repeat that, even though we didn’t step on the podium.

If we can do that, I think we can solidly run up there, we’ll inside the top six and put on a good result for the likes of Jim Beam, Norton and VIP Petfoods. There’s always a little bit of extra pressure being your home track, but it’s a home track to a lot of teams. It will be tough, but it would be amazing to walk away with a couple of trophies. SPEEDCAFE: And a return to the familiar white Jim Beam livery ... JOHNSON: That’s right. The team has changed the livery for Queensland Raceway, which was always planned. As a team, we’ve had some good results with white Jim Beam liveries. Not that I’m superstitious, but I hope it brings us a change of fortune. SPEEDCAFE: You’re currently 15th in the championship. We’re generally used to seeing you right inside the top 10. Do you

have a goal to reach by the end of the season? JOHNSON: We wanted to finish this year well inside the top 10. At this point last year, we were about fifth or sixth. It’s going to be tough for us to get to that point now. If we can finish this year off as good as what we started last year, I think we can definitely finish near the top eight. We just need to have a good end to the year, have a good endurance season and have a bit of luck go our way. If you look at the points, we’re not far away from the top 10, so one good round will push us up there closer to the top 10. Although it’s frustrating being back in 15th, a couple of good races could really move us forward.

Races 16/17 - Ipswich I Tech Preview

TECH PREVIEW with

CAMPBELL LITTLE

F

riday is going to be an interesting day for all of the Victorian teams as we sample Queensland Raceway’s new surface for the first time.

I went out to the Queensland test (Triple Eight, Stone Brothers Racing, Dick Johnson Racing and Tekno Autosports all completed a test day on Friday July 27th) last week just to snoop around the race track looking at what sort of lap times people were doing on the new surface. The most notable thing for me was that it still looks reasonably bumpy into Turns 1 and 3, so it’s still going to be a challenge getting the cars slowed down into those corners. At Willowbank and also where the Victorian teams test at Winton, laps times virtually change with the wind, but the speeds we were seeing at last week’s test weren’t significantly faster than at the race meeting last year. When the first Willowbank surface went down people were doing 9s and 10s on hard tyres, and I think some people were expecting it to go back to that sort of speed, but I think that’s a bit optimistic. If the conditions are right though I think we’ll all be around 0.5s faster than last year, so the lap record (1:10.16s set by Jamie Whincup in 2011) should still fall. Jamie did a 9.4 on good tyres at (the equivalent of ) qualifying

time during the test, and the COTF prototypes were lapping in the mid-9s on good tyres earlier this year, so I’d expect low 1:09s in qualifying (qualifying record currently stands at 1:09.26s, set by John Bowe in the circuit’s first year of use, 1999). For those of us that haven’t tested there we’ll have to see what difference the new surface will make to tyre wear. The surface is nothing like anything I’ve seen in terms of the type of bitumen. I thought it was going to be the same mix as they’ve recommended for most Grand Prix circuits around the world, but it’s something a bit different. The locals who have tested their multiple times say that the new surface hasn’t altered the fact that the track can be really fast one day and slow the next, but we’ll wait and see what it’s like when there’s a lot of rubber on it from a full field of cars. The old surface was very coarse, so it took a long time to actually get rubber into the circuit. I think that the new surface will rubber up better and it’ll go faster, but we won’t know that until we get into the weekend.

13

Strategy Now that people are starting to get more confident with their tyre life fuel economy becomes even more important. Last year we were seeing guys do 25 laps on the soft tyres, and the fuel window (a full tank of fuel) is about 28 to 30 laps here, so if they did 25 last year they’re not going to blink when it comes to doing that distance on the soft tyre this year. Certainly in the Sunday race we’ll see a repeat of most events where it’ll be a race to the pits to get onto the better tyres (i.e. starting with a short stint on the hard compound before doing two longer runs on the softs). We saw last year here anyone who pitted early made a major gain. I think we’ll be seeing cars pit on Lap 10 or 11, depending on how brave they are with fuel. Testing The Queenslanders aren’t the only ones to have tested since Townsville, as we had our first private day of the year last week.

Winton put on a beautiful day for us, the temperature was fairly consistent throughout the day and the sun was out so we couldn’t have asked for anything more. All three of our co-drivers got plenty of laps, and we were able test some new components, as well as lots of little things that we’ve had on for parts of practice sessions (at race meetings). When the track changes so much and you’ve got no tyres to play with in practice you don’t get clear readings on what’s good, bad or indifferent, so to assess things in a proper test environment was good. Queensland Raceway was obviously a disaster for us last year, but a lot has changed since then. Naturally after Townsville we worked on tyre life during the test and we think we’ve made some gains. A lot of the degradation we saw in Townsville came down to compromises we had to make in order to get the car to turn. We’ll find out what gains we’ve really made as the weekend unfolds.

ith four straight wins, TeamVodafone have seized the momentum in the V8 Supercars Championship, however their rivalry with Ford Performance Racing is becoming something quite special in the record books. Between them, the two teams have won all 15 championship races held this year and have an 18 race winning streak that dates back to Sandown last November. The last time two teams dominated the start of the V8 Supercars Championship was back in 1993, when it was still known as the Australian Touring Car Championship. Between them, Glenn Seton Racing (drivers Glenn Seton and Alan Jones) and Dick Johnson Racing (Dick Johnson and John Bowe) won the first 12 races of the season. Peter Brock’s Holden Dealer Team and Dick Johnson’s Tru-Blu Falcon team won 15 straight championship races between them, though that covered the 1981 season and halfway into 1982.

A

total of 11 different teams have scored podium finishes at Queensland Raceway, though the two teams that dominated last year - Triple Eight Race Engineering and Stone Brothers Racing - lead the way. SBR has had 13 podium finishes at QR since the V8 Supercars Championship debuted at the Ipswich circuit in 1999, while Triple Eight have clocked up 12. Next best is the Holden Racing Team (eight) and Garry Rogers Motorsport (five).

T

his year’s Coates Hire Ipswich 300 is the 16th V8 Supercars Championship event to be held at Queensland Raceway. There were two events in 1999 and 2000 - one a sprint weekend and the other the 500-kilometre endurance race meaning this year is the 14th actual year of V8 Supercars racing at the circuit. In that time there have been 29 individual races with 17 wins to Holden drivers and 12 wins to Ford pilots.

S

upercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall is one of three drivers alongside Garth Tander and Craig Lowndes to have competed in every V8 Supercars Championship event at Queensland Raceway. Ingall’s record at the Ipswich circuit has been quite impressive too. He’s finished in the top three in 18 of 29 races and in the top 10 in 23 of those 29 races. ‘The Enforcer’ - who will equal Peter Brock for third on the all-time event starts list (212) - has three race wins at Queensland Raceway and six podium finishes. Despite a reputation as a poor qualifier, Ingall has qualified in the top 10 on 15 of 18 occasions at his old test circuit from his time with Stone Brothers and Paul Morris Motorsports.

F

our drivers will make their first V8 Supercars Championship start at Queensland Raceway. Fujitsu Racing GRM’s Frenchman Alex Premat, Jacques Villeneuve (Pepsi Max Crew), David Wall (Wilson Security Racing) and Taz Douglas (Team iSelect) are all making their

‘main game’ debut at the Ipswich circuit. Of the four, only Premat does not have experience at the circuit. Douglas has competed there for the past two years in the Dunlop Series, while Wall has experience in the development category in addition

to the Porsche Carrera Cup and Australian GT Championship. Villeneuve, meanwhile, spent a day at the circuit aboard Ford Performance Racing’s The Bottle-O Falcon in 2010 ahead of his maiden V8 Supercars start alongside Paul Dumbrell at the Armor All Gold Coast 600.

It’s hard to look past either of Triple Eight’s entries for victory this weekend. The team has turned the tables on FPR over the last two events, scoring four consecutive race wins despite struggling to match the qualifying pace of the factory Fords. Triple Eight took all three wins here last year with Craig Lowndes, and was one of several teams to test on the resurfaced layout last week. A heavy pre-test COTF workload is the only major factor that could count against this squad completing another clean-sweep.

Walkinshaw Racing THE BAGMAN’S SAY... The Holden Racing Team enjoyed a competitive run last time out in Townsville, with Garth Tander returning the factory Holden squad to the podium for the first time since Hamilton, and James Courtney qualifying in the top six for the first time all season. While the team has traditionally fielded competitive cars at the street venue, its Queensland Raceway form is less consistent. Following a strong run in 2010, Tander and Courtney qualified in the back half of the field here for both races last year. An improvement is almost guaranteed this year, although how far into the top 10 Tander can penetrate is always difficult to predict.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Many eyes will be on Tim Slade this weekend after the Lucky 7 Falcon driver scored his first three career podiums in the three races here last year. SBR endured an uncharacteristically inconsistent weekend in Townsville, where all three drivers found themselves caught up in incidents after mid-pack qualifying efforts. The team has traditionally been one of the best performers at Queensland Raceway however, and has the most experience of the new surface having already undertaken all three of its permitted tests for the year. This weekend undoubtedly represents the squad’s best chance yet of ending the T8/FPR stranglehold on the 2013 season.

Ford Performance Racing

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... FPR has continued to prove the benchmark for one-lap speed in recent races, locking out the front-row of the grid for each race in both Darwin and Townsville. All four of those races were won by Triple Eight drivers however, as tyre life and pitstop speed counted against the factory Fords. FPR recently undertook its first test of the season at Winton, where a range of new suspension and steering parts were explored in what was described as a highly productive day. The team may have endured one of its worst weekends of the season here un 2011, but with vastly different cars and a new track surface, FPR should be well in contention to add to its nine victories scored so far this year.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Kelly Racing’s season showed no sign of improvement in Townsville, where 15th on Saturday for Rick Kelly represented the best qualifying position of any of its four entries all weekend. By contrast, the team showed a reasonable turn of speed at Queensland Raceway last year, with Greg Murphy taking a respectable sixth on Saturday. The team has scored just two top six finishes from 60 chances so far this year however, indicating that a repeat of last year’s heroics are unlikely. This weekend sees Jacques Villeneuve return for a second run with the team. Expect a marginally improved run from the Canadian, although the technical nature of the Ipswich layout is unlikely to favour a driver unfamiliar with his vehicle.

Brad Jones Racing Base: Albury, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Walkinshaw Racing Engines: Noonan Race Engines Team principals: Brad and Kim Jones

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Fabian Coulthard continued to shade team-mate Jason Bright in Townsville, and now holds an 11-4 qualifying record over the 1998 Bathurst winner so far this season. Although a Race 15 collision with Rick Kelly ended a run of consecutive top five finishes, Coulthard is cemented inside the top 10 in the points standings, and will be aiming to add to his eight top 10 results achieved during the campaign thus far. Bright meanwhile will need to improve his qualifying performances if he is to have a shot at a big result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY...

Dick Johnson Racing

Dick Johnson Racing heads to Queensland Raceway with renewed confidence after a promising run in Townsville and a positive preevent Ipswich test. A pair of top six qualifying performances, and a seventh place finish in Race 14, highlighted the team’s resurgence in Townsville, which it should be noted is a circuit that has proven to suit the team’s chassis in the past. Encouragingly, DJR’s most competitive outing of 2011 came at Queensland Raceway, where Steven Johnson and James Moffat both scored a treble of top 10 finishes. This year’s form suggests that Owen and Johnson will lead the team’s quest for its sixth top 10 finish of the season this weekend.

Tekno Autosports

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Tekno Autosport drivers Jonathon Webb and Michael Patrizi have both proven regular top 10 runners across the last four events, and there’s little evidence to suggest that will change this weekend. The team joined its fellow Queensland-based outfits at the preevent test on the new surface, and is looking for its eighth top 10 finish in the last six races. While Jonathon Webb failed to shine here last year while running a Triple Eight Ford chassis, the TeamVodafone-run Triple Eight Holdens proved the class of the field, which can only add to the Tekno squad’s confidence.

Base: Stapylton, Queensland Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Jonathon Webb

Garry Rogers Motorsport

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Michael Caruso’s top-five finish in Sunday’s race at Hidden Valley was quickly forgotten last time out in Townsville, where neither Caruso nor team-mate Alexandre Premat managed to qualify better than the 10th row across the two races. Premat, in fact, was just 26th fastest in each qualifying session before spending the opening phase of Sunday’s race dicing with Kelly Racing rookie Jacques Villeneuve. The team is one of few not to have tested since Townsville, and should have modest expectations for the Queensland Raceway event.

Base: Knoxfield, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Garry Rogers Motorsport Engines: Walkinshaw Racing Team principal: Garry Rogers

#33 Alexandre Premat Team: Fujitsu Racing GRM Born: 5 April 1982 V8SC debut: Adelaide, 2012 Starts: 15 Wins: 0 Career Highlights: 2008 Le Mans Series Champion, 1st 2005-06 A1 GP Series (Team France), 1st 2004 Macau Grand Prix, 1st 2004 Masters of F3

Tony D’Alberto Racing Base: Knoxfield, Victoria Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Ford Performance Racing Engines: Ford Performance Racing Team principal: Al D’Alberto

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Tony D’Alberto should head to Queensland Raceway with increased confidence after finding form in Townsville. D’Alberto continued his 2012 trend of showing strong pace on street circuits, with the Hiflex Falcon qualifying an impressive fifth on Saturday before a combination of tyre degradation and a restart incident scuppered his chances of a strong race result. While the privately-prepared FPR Falcon largely out-performed the team’s flagship entries at Queensland Raceway 12 months ago, such a result is highly unlikely to be repeated this year.

#3 Tony D’Alberto Team: Team Hiflex Born: 9 December 1985 V8SC debut: Sandown, 2005 Starts: 137 Wins: 0 Career Highlights: 1st 2007 V8 Supercars Development Series, 6th 2007 Bathurst 1000, 5th 2005 V8 Supercars Development Series, 9th 2011 Bathurst 1000

Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Base: Nunawading, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Lucas Dumbrell

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport endured a typically up-and-down weekend in Townsville, with a 17th place run on Sunday following a Saturday effort hampered by an opening lap incident. As has been the case at several venues this year, Taz Douglas has yet to compete at Queensland Raceway in a V8 Supercars Championship event, but has plenty of experience at the circuit in Formula Ford and V8 Supercars Development Series competition. Adding to the five top 20 finishes scored so far this season is a clear goal for Douglas this weekend.

#30 Taz Douglas Team: Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Born: 11 February 1985 V8SC debut: Phillip Island, 2009 Starts: 20 Wins: 0 Career Highlights: 1st 2010 V8 Supercars Development Series Sandown Race 2, 8th 2007 Australian Formula Ford Championship, 9th 2009 V8 Supercars Development Series
