The Saturday action will again feature a 20 minute qualifying session, before a pair of 70km ‘sprint races’ are run with just a 15 minute ‘servicing window’ between them.

he V8 Supercars Championship has emerged from its midseason break, and heads to Queensland Raceway this weekend with another new race format up its sleeve.
While the details of how the servicing window will operate are quite complex, the number of set-up changes that take place between races looks set to be the most interesting factor. Teams and drivers will not have the luxury of a long debrief before committing to any adjustments, and a bold move to a different spring, roll-bar or shock absorber setting could transform a car’s chances from one race to the next. The format adds another unknown element into what already promises to be an exciting weekend of racing. The relative performance of the visiting Victorians against the local teams is always interesting to watch at Queensland Raceway, with Garth Tander having proven particularly strong at the venue last year in his Toll Holden Racing Team entry. TeamVodafone duo Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes currently hold a commanding advantage in the championship standings, but converting their status as favourites into a pair of race victories will be no easy task. I
Q&A with JAMES COURTNEY t’s been a tumultuous first season at the Toll Holden Racing Team for James Courtney.
Having won the 2010 V8 Supercars Championship with Dick Johnson Racing, Courtney’s high-profile switch to the factory Holden team garnered much offseason attention, which was duly satisfied by a first-up win in Abu Dhabi. Since then, however, there has been little to write home about for the 31-year-old, with a string of on-track clashes resulting in just six top 10 finishes from the first 15 races, and a lowly 19th place in the championship standings. Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke to Courtney prior to Queensland Raceway - a vanue which has proven kind to the Gold Coast resident in the past. SPEEDCAFE: Queensland Raceway is a track that you’ve had a lot of success at. You won with the Stone Brothers and you dominated last year with Dick Johnson Racing. What’s special about this place for you? JAMES COURTNEY: I’ve managed to win or have a pole position in most years when I’ve driven there. It’s a track that I’ve had a lot of success at, and it has usually been a turning point of my season as well. I’m certainly hoping I can continue that trend there. SPEEDCAFE: It has been a difficult title defence for you. Is this the round where you start to turn it all around? COURTNEY: I hope so. We’ve changed quite a few things in the rear of the car. The rear wasn’t doing what we thought it was, and it is all being rectified now. It is good that we’ve had this mid-season break and we’ve been able to have a really good look at it all. We’re very happy with the finds we’ve made, and we’re quietly confident we’ve found the gains. It is definitely going to help us there this weekend. If you look at our results from Townsville in the Sunday race, both cars were in the top five until Garth’s car had the failure and I had the brain failure! The speed was getting there, so I think with these couple of little changes, we’re on the right path.
6
SPEEDCAFE: You sound optimistic, and you do tend to look on the bright side more often than not, but has it been frustrating not getting the results you were getting last year? COURTNEY: It’s not where I want to be, that’s for sure, but if I hadn’t won the race at the start of the year (at Yas Marina), I’d probably be going crazy! That result early on keeps me driving for the next one. Now, we’re concentrating on getting the car ready for Bathurst and getting a consistent car and also building towards next year. SPEEDCAFE: It sounds very 1980s of you – forgetting the championship and building a strong car for Bathurst ... COURTNEY: The championship done for us, really, so I just want to get to Bathurst. I’ve been close quite a few times but haven’t been able to get it over the line. That’s where our main focus is, as well as Homebush. It’s not about collecting championship points for us, it’s about going out there and getting race wins and building towards next year. There’s some great news coming up for HRT in the next couple of weeks which both myself, Garth and the rest of the team are pretty excited about. SPEEDCAFE: Now looking ahead to Queensland Raceway’s event, there’s a new Saturday race format. What are your thoughts on it? COURTNEY: I think it’s going to be interesting. It will be pretty crazy, especially if there’s a bit of rain. I think the format will mix it up. I don’t know, we’ll see how it goes, but I’m happy racing the car more. I’d rather be there racing it, rather than sitting on the sidelines looking at the car. I think it will work well for the fans too ... SPEEDCAFE: Between those two Saturday races is a short 15 minute break – like a footy match. Do you think you guys should ‘swap ends’ and run the second half in the opposite direction? COURTNEY: That would be a cracker! I’d be up for that. No testing, just bang, straight into it.

CIRCUIT INFO
Queensland Raceway was quickly dubbed the ‘Paperclip’ because of its basic layout. Changing temperatures can make this circuit a nightmare for drivers and engineers as its grip level changes at different times of the day. Despite its simple layout, it tends to provide entertaining racing with passing chances at turns 1, 3, 4 and 6. It is also the home test circuit for a large portion of the V8 Supercar Championship field. V8 Supercars Lap Records Qualifying 1999 Race 2010

Q
ueensland Raceway is a significant unknown for the visiting teams this year after the flooding the circuit experienced last summer.
Track condition is always the big talking point at Ipswich, and the resurfacing planned for the last offseason obviously didn’t happened. The track surface has deteriorated a fair bit over the years, but we’ve all got to race on the same surface and make the cars handle it the best we can. It’s always a spirited battle between the local and visiting teams at Winton (the Victorian teams’ test track) and Queensland Raceway. It would have certainly helped to have spent time at Queensland Raceway recently to get a set-up. Typically we can go back to most race tracks and not have a bad baseline, but this time we’ve really just got to see what happens when we get there.
12
The braking areas at Turn 1 and Turn 3 are very high speed and very bumpy, so the challenge for the visiting teams is to find a set-up that works in those areas. The cars bottom out in both braking zones with 40mm of travel in the front. Midway through Turn 1 the cars virtually fly as they jump across the road on turn-in, which makes for pretty spectacular viewing for the fans. The cars can also bottom out at the rear thanks to the exit kerbs, particularly at Turn 2. The left-rear can disappear well into the guard if you run wide there, and the tyre can cop a bit of damage from that sort of treatment. The exit of Turn 3 used to cause some concerns as well before they took the big kerb out of it. Car set-up is always a compromise no matter where you go, and here it’s a fine balance. If you run the cars
Races 16/17/18 - Ipswich
too soft you risk them hitting the ground too hard, but fixing that with a harder spring creates a lot of understeer in Turn 3 and 6. New format Having two short races on the Saturday with a 15 minute service interval is something different for all of us. V8 Supercars is obviously trying to mix it up and I think they’ll succeed with that. Whenever they bring in something new there are always a lot of questions. The pit facilities at Queensland Raceway aren’t quite to the level we see at some of the other circuits, so it’s an interesting choice of location for this format but we’ll see how it goes. There’s been a lot of discussion about how the service window will be policed and controlled. I’d hate to see someone given a penalty because one guy walks over the wrong line or something stupid like that. Shorter races Everyone can afford to be a little bit more aggressive on Saturday with the shorter races, both in terms of set-
up and the way the cars are driven. The most we’re doing on a set of four soft tyres is normally around 85km due to the 75 litre fuel tanks. By comparison, Saturday’s races are 22 laps each, which is only 68 or so kilometres. The break between races will be long enough to throw in a new spring or roll bar, as well as a new set of tyres, so the relative car performances could be quite different depending on how much people learn in the first heat. Saturday will be very straight forward with one tyre set per race, but Sunday could be more interesting. Last year Queensland Raceway was one of the few tracks where we had people taking two tyres only during a soft tyre pitstop. We saw a couple of teams either doing rears only or just the working side in one of their stops, so we’ll see if that is a strategy that will appear again this weekend. The 200km race on Sunday will be very much like Townsville where we’re all looking at our last fuel window and how a Safety Car might affect that.

DID YOU KNOW? Much is made of Winton and Queensland Raceway being the home test track of teams in the V8 Supercars Championship, but ‘home’ teams in Queensland have never really dominated at Ipswich. In the 26 races held since the first in 1999, Queensland-based teams have won nine races for a success rate of 35%. Things have been more even in recent times. Since 2001, honours have been split 9-9 between home teams and the ‘invaders’ from down south. Last year, James Courtney, right, won both races to be just thet hird man at Queensland Raceway – after Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander – to clean sweep the wins on a weekend at the track. Garth Tander’s victory in the Saturday race at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 has taken the Toll Holden Racing Team to the brink of its 200th all-time race win. The team has now won 199 races – both in the V8 Supercars Championship and at non-championship events such as the Australian Grand Prix, Gold Coast Indy, Sandown 500, Bathurst
12 2
1000 (in the years where the endurance races were not part of the championship) and New Zealand Sprints. The Toll HRT has won 168 ATCC/V8SC races, leaving it well clear of Dick Johnson Racing (80) and Triple Eight Race Engineering (69). Holden’s official factory racing team began in 1990 and celebrated its 21st birthday this year.
Races 16/17/18 - Ipswich
Jim Beam Racing’s Steven Johnson has been enjoying a solid year for the famous Ford team and he’s proven to be the only man to complete every lap of racing so far this year. The #17 Falcon driver has completed all 869 laps in the 15 championship races held with Craig Lowndes, Shane van Gisbergen and Rick Kelly having completed 868. Sitting eighth in the championship, Johnson is only 79 points behind fourth-placed Kelly. Queensland Raceway is the site of Johnson’s last race win in the V8 Supercars Championship – 10 years ago he teamed with Paul Radisich to win the 500-kilometre endurance race held at the venue. As was the case last year at Queensland Raceway, Dunlop’s Soft Tyre will be the only tyre in use for qualifying and racing – and that should bring a smile to the face of championship leader Jamie Whincup. In the eight all-Soft Tyre races held this year (as opposed to races with a mix of Soft and Hard), Whincup has scored an impressive 130 points more than the next best driver, Shane van Gisbergen. Minus a disastrous weekend at Hamilton, Whincup has not finished outside the top three in the other six Soft tyre races so far this year. Each driver will have seven sets of new Soft tyres to use for the weekend.
The Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series is the main support to the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 and it will see the return of Grant Denyer to the development category. The former series regular last competed in 2009 and will drive a Kelly Racing-run Commodore in his return to the series – the same car used by Rick Kelly to win in Hamilton earlier this year. Denyer and the winner of the 7mate ‘Shannons Supercar Showdown’ program will drive the car under a wildcard entry at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in October. A total of 28 cars have entered for the fourth round of the Fujitsu Series, led by Andrew Thompson, who holds a 114-point advantage over Jack Perkins.

Queensland Raceway does tend to get a bad rap, but really it’s a great circuit for spectators. The lack of elevation means that fans can see all the action from almost anywhere. From a driver’s perspective, it’s a challenging circuit because it’s actually very difficult to pass on. While it looks simple on paper it’s very difficult to complete a quick lap, due in part to the bumpy surface that has developed over the years.

Races 16/17/18 - Ipswich
#5 Mark Winterbottom
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Has enjoyed tremendous single-lap pace on both compounds of tyre recently. FPR is slowly making gains with its soft-tyre life issue, but the factory Ford team may be in for a tough run against the might of the home teams and the HRT this weekend.

#6 Will Davison
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Was on the pace all weekend in Townsville, before a late-race tap from behind in Race 15 ruined an otherwise strong weekend. Will be in the same boat as his fellow FPR drivers this weekend with a podium an achievable but tall order.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Has struggled to qualify well on either tyre this year but has proven very strong in the soft tyre races. Anything less than a podium will be a disapointment on SBR’s home soil. Ford’s best chance of victory.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Enjoyed another Kelly Racing test day since Townsville, but is unlikely to make the major gains required for Queensland Raceway. Hasn’t finished in the top 10 here since 2007, and may again struggle to do so this weekend.
