T
he V8 Supercars circus moves into endurance mode this weekend, with Phillip Island hosting the traditional 500km Bathurst curtain raiser for the fourth year in succession.
While the V8 Supercars Championship is filled with pitstop races nowadays, the two-driver events bring a whole range of new variables to the table. Twenty eight of those variables of course are the co-drivers themselves - many of whom are likely to be put under extraordinary pressure at 13:35 on Sunday afternoon when they are asked to start the race.
QUESTION & ANSWER: Rick Kelly
As accomplished as a driver has to be to even be considered for an endurance seat, a flick through the driver profiles in this Race Guide really emphasises just how many of the current ring-ins are ‘enduro specialists.’
PARTNERS: Castrol EDGE, IRWIN Tools, Jack Daniel’s, Orrcon Steel, Pirtek, Vodafone, HDT, Norton 360, Toshiba, Armor All
Year after year, the likes of Luke Youlden, Dean Canto, Greg Ritter, and David Besnard are among the most sort-after endurance partners due to their mix of speed and experience. What they lack, however, are recent race miles, and a 60km sprint race on Saturday is hardly a substitute for a full season of racing. The only guarantee heading into this weekend is that the first half of Sunday’s race is likely to be every bit as intriguing as the first. Green means go! Q&A with RICK KELLY
K
elly Racing heads into this weekend’s L&H 500 as a genuine dark horse for victory. The Braeside based Commodores have performed strongly at Phillip Island in recent years, and with the Rick Kelly/ Owen Kelly combination one of just eight partnerships to still be in place from last year’s event, the team has consistency on its side. Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke to Rick Kelly about the 500 and his current championship position. SPEEDCAFE: The last race four meetings at Phillip Island in no particular order have given you a fifth, fourth, third and second place, can you go one better and continue that theme? RICK KELLY: If you’re asking can we win there - yes we definitely can, we had the car to win there last year, and just not the strategy with the way the race played out. We’re certainly not going into this race thinking we’re there, we’re in with a shot, and we’re going to win. I think with the car we’ve got and the changes we’ve had last year to this year in that last 12-month period, we’re going to have some work to do there and we’re not going to win that race unless we do a lot of hard work and make all the right decisions leading into it. So I’m not going into it with a head full of confidence, I’m going to go there quietly confident in knowing that if we do everything right we can win. SPEEDCAFE: You were one of the few full timers to start the race last year; strategy will play a massive part in both Phillip Island and Bathurst this year? KELLY: That was our first year last year together (with Owen Kelly) and it was our first race meeting, we weren’t as confident in each other as we are now. Now knowing each other and how each other operates, we’re stoked with him. Owen is a great guy, outside the car he’s trustworthy, you do a handshake agreement with him and it’s done. He’s one of the very few genuine good blokes that’s left in the category as a driver. We’re stoked to have him, we can start him, we can end with him, we can do whatever we like and that’s great for us to be able to be flexible with our strategy and I think you’ll find we’ll
6
attack it a lot differently to last year. SPEEDCAFE: What is it about Phillip Island that has brought those favourable race results I mentioned earlier? KELLY: The track is suited to the way our car has been set up in previous years, and also you have drivers that enjoy different circuits and tend to go well at different circuits. That circuit for me is my track, I absolutely love it, I wish I could race there every weekend. It’s absolutely spectacular and just so much fun even when the car is not quite ideal; you just have a very fun track to race around. I would love nothing more to win this weekend because I’ve never won a 500 before, we’ve gone very close in 2006 we got second with Todd, I got my first podium at Sandown in 2003 with Murph (Greg Murphy), and we’ve got third. But I’ve never won one, so I want to make sure this weekend we do and if we’re unable to win it I would really like to grab a great bank of points to go towards third in the championship. We’re about 90 points from third, so that’s our two aims for the weekend. SPEEDCAFE: How much is the championship position playing on your mind at this point? KELLY: A lot, for our team if we could put a car in the top three of the championship at the end of the year I think that would be a pretty good achievement for our third year in the category. It’ll certainly put us in good shape for next year; generally a car that shows a lot of potential at the end of one season is very strong in the next. We’re strong in the championship, and the other three guys (Todd Kelly, Greg Murphy and David Reynolds) are really aiming to finish high in the championship for that exact reason, so they can start next year in good shape. SPEEDCAFE: You’re running a special bonnet for Jack’s 161st Birthday, tell us about that. KELLY: It’s pretty special for us to carry that birthday note on that bonnet, there would be no better present for the brand and all our partners to provide them with a win on the weekend.

Race 19 - Phillip Island
CIRCUIT INFO
Originally designed in 1956, the Phillip Island circuit was re-born for the 1989 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The fast and flowing venue has been basically unchanged and hosts two international motorcycle events (MotoGP and World Superbikes) and a full program of national events each year. V8 Supercars’ 500km preBathurst endurance race moved from its traditional Sandown home to Phillip Island in 2008. V8 Supercars Lap Records Qualifying Race

L&H 500 Format Explained Each driver will take part in a 20 minute qualifying session and a 60km sprint race on Saturday. Teams can nominate which of the drivers competes in which of the two sprints, meaning there will be a mix of regular drivers and co-drivers racing against one another. One driver – which one is at the discretion of each team – has to perform a compulsory pitstop in their Saturday sprint where at least two tyres are to be changed. Fifty championship points will be awarded to the
winner of each Saturday sprint, with the combined points tally from each car for the day being earned by both drivers towards their championship points tally. The combined point score will determine the grid for the L&H 500, with both drivers credited with a pole position in the V8 Supercars Championship record books. The format means that the winners of Sunday’s 200-point L&H 500 may not necessarily be the highest overall points scorers for the weekend.
11
Race Guide Race Guide
DID YOU KNOW? While continuity from season to season is often deemed an important factor in endurance racing, only eight combinations remain as they were at last year’s L&H 500. They are: Alex Davison/David Brabham (IRWIN Tools Racing) Shane van Gisbergen/John McIntyre (SP Tools Racing) Rick Kelly/Owen Kelly (Jack Daniel’s Racing) Craig Lowndes/Mark Skaife (TeamVodafone) Fabian Coulthard/Craig Baird (Bundaberg Racing) Paul Dumbrell/Dean Canto (The Bottle-O Racing Team) Karl Reindler/David Wall (Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing) VIP Petfoods Commodore driver Paul Morris will make his 150th ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship event start at the L&H 500 this year. Morris becomes just the 17th man in the history of the championship to achieve the feat, having made his debut at the now defunct Amaroo Park in Sydney in a BMW M3 in 1992.
12
In that time he has started a total of 327 races with his only victories coming at Calder Park in 2001 in the Big Kev Commodore VT. Morris won two of three races to clinch the round, while his only other podium finish came at Bathurst in 1999 when he paired with Mark Skaife to finish third for the Holden Racing Team.
Race 19 - Phillip Island
Just one driver in the field of 56 drivers will be making his first V8 Supercars Championship appearance at Phillip Island. Irishman Richard Lyons will return to the championship for the first time since Bathurst 2007 and co-drive with Jonathon Webb in the #19 Mother Energy Racing Team Falcon. The 32-year-old drove for Triple Eight at the endurance races in 2006/2007 and has been a regular on the Japanese motor racing scene in recent years, competing in both SuperGT and Formula Nippon. Four drivers in the L&H 500 will be performing ‘double duty’ at Phillip Island, also competing in round four of the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia in addition to their V8 Supercars commitments. Kiwi Craig Baird (co-driving with Fabian Coulthard), Steve Richards (co-driving with Mark Winterbottom) Daniel Gaunt (co-driving with Tim Slade) and Michael Patrizi (co-driving with Dean Fiore) will all be in action in the one-make Porsche category on top of their co-driving jobs.
There are no wildcard entries for this year’s L&H 500 at Phillip Island, meaning the grid will be made up of the regular 28-car field as per other events in the V8 Supercars Championship. Fujitsu Series team Miles Racing had been given approval to compete at both Phillip Island and Bathurst, however withdrew a few weeks before the event. This will be the first time since wildcards were introduced in 2009 that none have been used for Phillip Island. There were three in 2009 and two last year.

THE CRAIG LOWNDES GUIDE TO PHILLIP ISLAND DAYTIME: CRAIG ONON PHILLIP ISLAND CRAIG PERTH
Phillip Island is an incredible place and it’s right on Melbourne’s doorstep. The whole Island gets behind any event down there and the V8 Supercars are no different. There is always plenty to do at and away from the race track even when an event isn’t on. The Island features some very wild and exposed coastline and is definitely one of the nicest places we visit each year.
CRAIG ON THE L&H 500
I’ve only got good things to say about the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit and the L&H 500. The track is without doubt a world class facility and it’s a pleasure as a racing driver to compete on. Being endurance time, it’s my favourite time of the year and the pre-Bathurst 500km race has really found a home at Phillip Island. The last three years have produced some close battles and I’m sure this year will be no different.
EXERCISE OF THE EVENT: BULGARIAN SIT SQUATS Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean you workout schedule needs to suffer. TEAMVODAFONE DRIVER CRAIG LOWNDES shows you the potential of a hotel room/bedroom as a mini-gym with your first important stretch in your ‘on the move’ training programme. How to do it: 1) Place one foot just under one metre in front of the other with your back foot placed on a bench or seat
14
2) Making sure your front heal stays on the floor, bend your front knee and hip to lower yourself as far as possible, then return to the upright position making sure your back is straight the entire time. Do 3-4 sets of 6-8 reps on each leg

CAFE LUGANO
The Westernport Hotel in San Remo is a great place for a meal or a beer after the action on track has finished. Plenty of seating means you usually don’t have to wait for a table even on the busiest nights. 145 Marine Parade, San Remo, Vic 3925 / T: (03) 5678 5352
SAN REMO FISHERMAN’S CO-OP
You can almost bet your house that it will be cold on at least one of the days at Phillip Island so everybody needs to know where the best coffee is. Try Café Lugano is Cowes for that morning caffeine hit.
You can’t go past fish and chips at the beach and the San Remo Fisherman’s Co-op is one of the better fish and chip shops around. Sit back and enjoy a meal while the pelicans get fed at the wharf.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY While Tander won here in 2008 and 2009, last year’s dismal performance shows that great car speed should not be assumed. Percat has shown fashes of speed in the Fujitsu Series, but is being thrown in at the deep end with the HRT in just his second championship race and is a major question mark.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Like team-mates Winterbottom and Richards, this is a strong pairing that should be fast and reliable. New car suffered a tough debut at Queensland Raceway, but a podium this weekend is achievable.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Kelly’s lessened off-track workload announced prior to Queensland Raceway should already be starting to take effect. Kelly cars have been strong here in recent years, and Russell is perhaps the pick of the team’s four co-drivers. A top five would be a great result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Team BOC finished on the podium here in 2010 with Jason Richards/Andrew Jones, and this pairing represents BJR’s only truly competitive combination this year. May lack the outright speed to win, but practice/qualifying pace will quickly reveal if this car is again a podium contender.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Car speed has been up and down this year, and a change of engineer for this weekend renders predictions even more difficult. A pair of podiums last year on the Gold Coast will have done wonders for McIntyre’s confidence, but it’s hard to see this car winning on the hard tyre just yet.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY It has been many years since Murphy’s last top 10 finish in ‘the 500’ - but that could change on Kelly Racing’s favourite track and tyre this weekend. Driving combination is actually a constant since last year, despite Murphy’s team change - underlining the Kiwi’s confidence in Simonsen.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Like Fiore/Patrizi, this car is also unlikely to see the top 10 based on pace. Price was a late addition to the BJR line-up, and has not enjoyed many miles in V8 Supercars since crashing out of Bathurst last year.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Kelly cars have been fast here since the team was formed in 2009, and the #15 entry is undoubtedly the team’s winning chance. The cars have changed significantly since last September, so speed isn’t guaranteed, but this pair looms as a dark horse for victory.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Another very strong driver line-up that has the potential to run with the team’s sister car all the way into the top five. Has been a lean year so far for Caruso however, and recent Phillip Island 500s have not been kind to the former F3 Champ.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY PMM cars have shown a mild upturn in speed recently, and could surprise this weekend. Perkins has ample experience in these cars despite his relative youth, and has the potential to outpace his better credentialed co-driver. Anything less than a top 10 will be a disappointment.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Slade heads to Phillip Island full of confidence after his QR podiums. Finished top five in this race last year and has the potential to repeat that performance. Gaunt has been impressive in the Carrera Cup and will be keen to show he has what it takes in a V8. SBR car speed is a big unknown, however.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Owen excelled in a TeamVodafone car here last year. Speed has not been on the money thus far in 2011, but a return to Phillip Island could see a jump in performance. Morris has shown speed in his Fujitsu outings and is unlikely to take risks in the big races.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY This pair of Kiwis will be wishing to forget their joint effort last year which yielded just a 19th place finish. Coulthard’s season form has been better in 2011, but a dramatic improvement is unlikely. Might sneak into the top 10 if the HRT entries are on the pace.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Lowndes always steps up to the plate for the big races, and put in a masterful performance last time out at QR. While TeamVodafone is again expected to have the fastest cars in the field, Skaife’s lack of recent race miles is a major concern and may hurt in the first half of the race.
