W

hile some of the more recent additions to the Formula One World Championship have left a little to be desired, the Singapore Grand Prix has undoubtedly brought a fresh vibe to the championship. As the category’s first and so far only true night race, the Marina Bay street circuit was always destined to provide a different atmosphere to the traditional races, in addition to some spectacular imagery. The combination of atmosphere and location has seen the race quickly become regarded as a highly important one for entertaining corporate guests. Fan fare aside however, the race itself throws up a fairly extreme set of challenges for the teams. The number of heavy stops and relative lack of long straights ensures high brake temperatures, which naturally has a knock-on effect with regards to tyre heat. The sheer length of the pitlane however will open up the opportunity for teams to one-stop the race - potentially stretching the tyrefriendliness of several front-running cars. With Safety Car periods having proven far from rare in the first three years of the event, a full-course caution could well turn Sunday’s race on its head. Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari all fancy their chances of victory this weekend, while Sebastian Vettel stands a chance of wrapping up the championship title. The stage is set for an interesting weekend.

COVER STORY

Vettel on the brink Sebastian Vettel heads into the Singapore Grand Prix on the edge of becoming a two-time World Champion

R

ed Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel lies on the edge of securing a second World Drivers’ Championship crown as the Formula One circus makes its fourth visit to Singapore’s Marina Bay street circuit this weekend. Having scored yet another crushing victory last time out in the Italian Grand Prix, Vettel currently sits on 284 World Championship points - 112 ahead of nearest rival Fernando Alonso (Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro). With Jenson Button (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes)and Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) tied for third on 167 points, and Lewis Hamilton (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) a further nine points adrift, Vettel is a realistic shot at wrapping up the 2011 title this weekend. Should the 23-year-old German win in Singapore, he will need Alonso to finish no higher than fourth, and Button or Webber to finish no higher than third in order to seal the championship. If Vettel wins, Hamilton will be eliminated from the title race regardless of his result. A second place finish for Vettel could also see the championship

6

decided, but would require Alonso to finish no higher than eighth, Button and Webber no higher than sixth and Hamilton no higher than second. Not surprisingly given the requirements, Vettel isn’t overstating his chances of taking the title with five races still remaining. “Looking at the championship, there is still some way to go,” he says. “We are in a very strong position, which we deserve because we’ve been working hard and made few mistakes. “As long as we come out of the next race with a bigger lead then

we start with, then we have done a good job, so let’s see.” Vettel, who is now equal 13th (with Kimi Raikkonen) on the alltime Grand Prix winners list with 18 victories, is yet to visit the top step of the Singapore podium since the race made its first appearance on the Formula One calendar in 2008. Even so, Vettel rates the Marina Bay course as one of his favourites, and is expecting his Red Bull RB7 to suit the demanding 23 turn layout. “We’ve had some good races in Singapore in the past, especially last year when we finished

Round 14 – Marina Bay

second, just behind Fernando,” he says. “I love the track, it’s very challenging; there are a lot of corners, it’s very long, it’s hot and it’s a night race, so there are a lot of special things about Singapore. The car seems to be very competitive there, so I hope we can go back there this year and win - it would be very special.” After taking his first World Championship in a dramatic come-from-behind finale in Abu Dhabi last season, sealing the 2011 title in mid-September would be an emphatic show of strength from Red Bull and Vettel.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Red Bull Racing got it right again at Monza - with Sebastian Vettel taking pole position and the race victory. The result means Red Bull remains unbeaten in qualifying this season, while the 23-year-old German has a chance to wrap up the championship this weekend. Vettel will start as favourite for the race win, despite not having won here previously. Team-mate Mark Webber had a shocker in Monza, where he crashed out in the early laps after again being significantly outdone by Vettel in qualifying. A return to the podium will be a great result for the Australian.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY McLaren should be well in the hunt for victory this weekend, despite being out-classed by Vettel and Red Bull in recent races. By its own admission, McLaren had a car capable of winning the two most recent races at Spa and Monza. The team’s efforts were thwarted however by a combination of factors, including Hamilton’s inability to pass a highly defensive Michael Schumacher in the early stages of the Italian race. Both McLaren drivers will fancy their chances for a win this weekend, but with Red Bull’s imposing qualifying record, and the prospect of just a one-stop race - taking the 25 points will be a major achievement. THE BAGMAN’S SAY As expected, Ferrari was off the pace of its nearest rivals at Monza, with only the gritty determination of Alonso ensuring that the Scuderia would be represented on the famed Monza podium. The team still only has one win to its credit this season, and even that was scored during the onerace off-throttle diffuser blowing ban. The Ferrari should suit Singapore however, where outright downforce will take a back seat to traction and braking performance. Alonso isn’t discounting his chances of repeating his brilliant win of 2010 at this circuit. A win is a realistic aim, but will require the Spaniard to pull out a stunning lap on Saturday. THE BAGMAN’S SAY Mercedes has enjoyed a significant up-turn in form over the past two races, with a pair of fifth places for Michael Schumacher an encouraging sign for the team. The Brackley based squad is unlikely to be fighting with the McLarens and Ferrari again this weekend however, as the championship moves from the high-speed, low-downforce Spa and Monza circuits to the Marina Bay streets. The Mercedes has struggled on the tighter circuits this year, most notably at Monaco and Hungary, while the Super Soft tyre has also proven troublesome. Any finish in the points will be a good result for Mercedes this weekend. MERCEDES GP PETRONAS F1 TEAM

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Having shown strong speed in Belgium and Italy, Renault could find itself in a similar situation to Mercedes this weekend. The Renault R31 was also off the pace in Monaco and Hungary - pointing to a potentially difficult weekend on the streets of Singapore. Senna has been a pleasant surprise since joining Renault at Spa - making Q3 for both races and scoring his first career points at Monza. Petrov will no doubt be extra keen to show that he can at least match the speed of the Brazilian this weekend, having been taken out in the first corner incident at Monza. Again, any points for either driver would be a good result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Williams will again bring new parts to the Singapore Grand Prix, with the struggling British team set to evaluate a new front-wing and upgraded diffuser during Friday practice. Introducing new components has been one of the team’s strength this season, but turning new pieces into on-track gains has clearly been a struggle. While the team will take heart from its strong performance on Monaco’s tight streets earlier in the year, the FW33 has been notoriously hard on tyres all season, and may again struggle in a potentially one-stop race. Still an outside bet for a top 10 finish.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Force India is talking up its chances of adding to its 2011 points tally this weekend. Perhaps ironically, Sutil has pointed to the team’s relatively disappointing pace at Monza as a positive sign heading into this weekend’s highdownforce Sinapore race. While Sutil was taken out in the first corner melee, team-mate di Resta managed to score points at Monza - a fact that, if repeated this weekend, will put the German under even more pressure as speculation mounts over his future with the team. Sutil has scored points in every second race since Turkey however, and is a solid chance to continue that streak this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY A double DNF, believed to be caused by gearbox failures, were a major blow for Sauber at Monza, but expect the team to bounce back strongly this weekend. The Swiss team has performed strongly across the year on the Super Soft and Soft compound tyres, and the potential for a onestop race, largely due to the sheer length of the pitlane and hence time lost when stopping, will suit the team down to the ground. The timing of Safety Cars, which are more likely than usual in Singapore based on the previous three races at the venue, will likely determine the results for this team.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The Italian Grand Prix was again kind to Toro Rosso in 2011, with the Swiss squad taking a doublepoints finish. The result has seen Alguersuari leap ahead of team-mate Buemi in the Drivers’ Championship, while the team is now just seven points away from sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship. Toro Rosso will, like Sauber, see Singapore as an opportunity to score significant points through strategy. The team has not been afraid to sacrifice qualifying position in order to save tyres for the race - a strategy expected to be employed by more teams than normal this weekend. Look for both STR pilots to be inside the top 10 on Sunday afternoon.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Team Lotus continues to push through new parts for its T128 as it fights to remain 10th in the Constructors’ Championship. The green cars will sport a new floor and diffuser package in Singapore, where the chances of collisions and Safety Cars may again provide an opportunity for one of the three second-year teams to better Lotus’ season-best result of a 13th place finish. As usual, expect the Lotus entries to drop out of qualifying in Q1, while their race results will depend largely on the fortunes of the cars ahead.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY The Italian Grand Prix was a shocker for the Hisapnia Racing team, with Liuzzi’s major error at Turn 1 seeing the local driver crash out of the race as soon as it had begun. Monza was little better for teammate Ricciardo, as mechanical problems led to a result of Not Classified, having out-qualified Liuzzi for the first-time on Saturday. The highly regarded Geoff Willis appears to have ended his association with Hispania since Monza, as part of the team’s shake-up prior to the 2012 season. Having either car finish this weekend will be a good result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Virgin Racing’s aerodynamic upgrades introduced at Monza saw the British team slot itself directly in between Team Lotus and Hispania in qualifying. Virgin has completed further aerodynamic testing (straightline testing) in the short time since Monza, and is hoping to further close the gap to Lotus in Singapore. Lead driver Glock has had two of his best ever results on the Marina Bay circuit, and while points are still well beyond this team, the German is guaranteed to extract the most from the low-budget team’s modest package.
