Round 6 - Monaco I Editorial

All on black?
The man most under scrutiny heading into the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend is not necessarily behind the wheel - but he’s very close to it.
monaco EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus ART DIRECTOR: Steven Neumann DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes
Paul Hembery from Pirelli has been in the spotlight since the Spanish Grand Prix two weekends ago. The less than durable Italian rubber saw each pit crew very active throughout the Catalunya race for a total of 79 pit stops. With defending Constructor’s Champions, Red Bull Racing, leading the bleating against the Pirellis, it’s left Hembery caught between a rock and a hard place. He vowed in the days following Catalunya that changes would be made to the rubber. It is important to remember when taking the strap to Pirelli that they have built a tyre to the specification handed to them by the sport’s governing body. Whilst some teams - see Lotus - have built their 2013 steeds to the conditions, others - namely Red Bull - are struggling to get a consistency from track to track. Despite the many twists and turns of the world’s most famous streets, Monaco produces the least amount of wear of any circuit on the calendar. Nevertheless, with the tight turns, it requires high levels of grip, hence Hembery and his team taking the P ZERO soft ‘yellow’ tyre and supersoft ‘red’ tyre for team’s disposal.

Wet weather tyres and intermediates are never far away either, with changeable weather conditions in the Mediterranean autumn often producing at least one wet session in the weekend.

From a Championship perspective, it couldn’t enter the Principality at a better stage. Fernando Alonso’s fightback at the last Grand Prix has put the field on notice that he and Ferrari are ready to close down the 17 point deficit to Sebastian Vettel. Vettel’s team-mate Mark Webber comes to Monaco being a modern day master of the armco-lined streets, having added a win last year to his 2010 win. He needs to score a huge haul of points if he is to stay in contact with the Championship lead. The continued surge of Mercedes-AMG, Kimi Raikkonen’s consistency for Lotus and Sebastian Vettel as the only driver other than Alonso to have two victories this year make for a fascinating stoush. However, entering Monaco one has to expect the unexpected - put all those elements in the mix and we are in for one cracking race to the steps of the Royal Palace.

WEBBER’S QUEST TO JOIN THE MONACO GREATS

T
that he get his season back on track - it is around the tight confines of the tiny Principality.
With Red Bull Racing being leaders in the angst against Pirelli over the tyre situation that has seen an inordinate number of pitstops throughout the 2013 season - Webber needs a catalyst to get his season back on track - and this weekend could be exactly it.
Looking back across his 11 Formula 1 starts in Monte Carlo, the Queanbeyan racer has been rarely out of the top five. Of those events, four have seen him exit the race early - including an unhappy time with Jaguar (the forerunner to the modern day Red Bull Racing team) - not finishing either event in the British racing green machine.
he Monaco Grand Prix could well be the impetus for Mark Webber’s fightback in the 2013 Formula 1 Grand Prix World Championship.
He enters the sixth round of the 2013 World Championship sitting sixth on the points table, some 47 behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel, however if there is a track

Two additional retirements came at the hands of a Williams in 2006 and a pre-Adrian Newey specification Red Bull in 2006.
Focusing on the positives, prior to Formula 1 Webber was good at Monaco. He took a famous victory in Formula 3000 for Super Nova - one which many regard as the moment he became destined to arrive at the elite level of the sport. ™

In F1, one of Webber’s brightest finishes came in an unlikely Williams-BMW in 2005, elevating that car to the podium. It was that particular event where he caught the attention of many doubters of his place in the world’s most glamorous motor racing discipline.

Webber won at Monaco in F3000
He has not been outside the top five at Monaco in recent seasons, with a fourth in 2008 and 2011, fifth in 2009 and two of his most famous victories in 2010 and last year. The 2010 victory was pivotal in Webber’s development not only as a Grand Prix driver but the World Championship as a whole. He entered Monaco after a mixed season - starting with two finishes deep in the top 10, a second placing at Sepang brought him up in Championship standing before finishing in eighth in tremendously damp conditions in China. He walked onto the Monagesque foreshore with a spring in his step after taking his third Grand Prix career victory at the Circuit de Catalunya.
first time in his career Webber would sit atop the World Championship rankings as the sole Championship leader and this win set him on his date with destiny that would see him record another two victories. Then the infamous collision with Vettel in Turkey, the crash in Korea and of course, the heart-wrenching final round in Abu Dhabi which saw Vettel win his first Championship saw Webber sink to third in the standings. The win made him the first Australian driver since Sir Jack Brabham in 1959 to take victory in Monaco and he achieved what Australia’s only other World Champion, Alan Jones could not. He ranks it as one of the greatest moments of his life.
srentrap munitalp duorp ruO That weekend in Monaco he would be without peer. After qualifying on pole, Webber controlled the pace from the front of the pack right through until the race’s completion. ™
ytiruceS enO-nI-llA
A late race Safety Car for an incident between Karun Chandhok and Jarno Trulli at Rascasse brought the race under yellow flag intervention. History would show that Webber crossed the line a mere 0.448s of a second in front of team-mate, Sebastian Vettel - however the margin was far superior to that. From a confidence point of view, for the
Last year’s victory was no less important. After a slew of fourth placings in the opening four of races and an 11th in Spain, victory on the world’s most famous street circuit was the perfect antidote to any crisis of confidence. Looking ahead to this weekend’s event and Webber needs a big result after an indifferent beginning to the 2013 season. A lack of pace in Australia led to Malaysia where the powderkeg of the “Multi 21” affair saw him robbed of a certain victory by an unrepentant Vettel. From there the litany of team errors in China moved onto Bahrain and Spain,
where he finished seventh and fifth respectively. Although sitting sixth and 47 points off the Championship leader Vettel, Webber will show his ultimate ruthlessness on a circuit where he channels the ultimate Monaco masters - Senna and Schumacher and the late Graham Hill. He describes the Monaco Grand Prix as dramatic, glitzy - and busy! Webber’s desire to be World Champion and passion to be racing in Formula 1 has never wavered - and this weekend could be just the catalyst he needs for the 2013 season to get back on track. “I can remember the very first time I got into a Formula 1 car, the smell of the fuel, the feeling of the vibrations and the notes of the engine,” he says. “You absolutely love it, you never want to come into the pits. You see the little kerbs and think you’re Alain Prost and try to take the corners like your heroes. “It makes me think back to the farm where I was riding my motorbike in my own race - against me alone and screaming commentary in my helmet. “It’s still exactly the same. The desire’s still there. The rules haven’t changed.”

Round 6 - Monaco I Track Details
9
Monaco circuit Technical preview with the Lotus F1 Team.
THE CAR Rear wing We will have a Monaco-specific ‘big’ rear wing to gain more downforce at the slower overall speeds we see here. Brakes Brakes are not a big concern. It’s only low speed so you’re not braking significantly as you would from a long straight into a first gear corner, and it’s also a shorter race than most, so wear is not an issue. You need to monitor temperature because there aren’t high speed sections to cool down the brakes and the relentless stop / start nature can compound heat generation. Suspension Monaco has the greatest undulations relative to any other circuit, so you need a soft car which allows the tyres to be on the tarmac as much as possible. This means softer roll bars and springs, with the aim of maximising mechanical grip without losing too much aerodynamic grip. Tyres This race will see Pirelli’s red marked supersoft tyre appear for just the second time this season – Australia being the first – alongside the soft compound. Tyre wear is very low here due to the smooth track surface and low speed layout.
www.speedcafe.com
Front wing Front downforce is very important here and we run maximum front wing with more balance to the front because of the understeer inducing characteristics of the circuit.
Turn 6 The slowest corner on the circuit, and of the entire season. Suspension and steering mods have to be made to the car just to make it through this turn.
Engine You need an engine with very good response. Rather than ultimate power being the goal; drivability is king. You’ll never go slower with more power, but it’s the least power sensitive circuit of the year. The engine also spends a relatively short amount of time at full throttle so the challenge is to deliver torque through the lower rev limits of the engine. However, as Monaco is a bumpy street track, the engine needs a good limiter setting so it is capable of digesting all the bumps. Fuel consumption also needs to be worked out accurately as the track gets quicker and quicker over the week-end.
Turn 9 Taken flat out, the tunnel is the fastest part of the track. The contrast of natural, artificial, then natural light is a big challenge for the drivers. Track temperature is also different from the rest of the circuit. Turn 10 Exiting the tunnel into the chicane is the scene of many out-braking manoeuvres. An opportunity to pressurise the car ahead, but a place where mistakes are often seen.
Our proud platinum partners
THE Circuit Turn 1 The first corner is very tight and has been the scene of many incidents over the years. The drivers need to keep their wits about them to avoid any drama. Turns 4 & 5 The bumpy track between turns four and five means that the drivers need to modify their line to avoid unsettling their car unduly.
Turn 14 The Swimming Pool, ‘La Piscine’, is entered very quickly, before braking hard for turn 15. ™
All-In-One Security
Turn 18 Turn 18, La Rascasse, is the second slowest part of the circuit with the cars running very close to the inside wall. Start-finish straight A good exit is essential leading on to the start finish straight. High traction demands here.
Round 6 - Monaco I Bagman
10
The Bagman says...
I
f there’s been anything consistent throughout 2013 it is that there is nothing consistent! Not one team or driver has stood up to declare itself outright favourites for the World Championship. Usually by the time the circus arrives back at the first European race a pecking order is established, which is generally fortified by the round of updates added to the first non fly-away race, but we aren’t seeing that this year. Whilst Red Bull is widely accepted to
have the outright best car, its difficulty to get a grip on the Pirelli’s - plus the well documented internal fissures - is cause for concern for Christian Horner’s men. Kimi Raikkonen and Lotus’ consistency (his only finish outside the top two was seventh in Malaysia) in a car considered to be running on a far lesser budget than those around him has kept the fast Finn in the game and he’d dearly love to add to his 2005 Monaco win for McLaren this weekend, although Monaco hasn’t exactly
yielded the success he would desire. Fernando Alonso is on the up, but he, like Raikkonen - along with Vettel and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton - sits on just the single win at Monaco despite their storied careers. As we outlined in this issue’s feature story of anyone in the current field, Monaco is Mark Webber’s playground, but Mercedes will be aiming to show that it has the pace to last - and a victory by the Silver Arrows would spice the Championship race up even more.
