Races 23/24 - Symmons Plains I Introduction
Taking up the challenge
SYMMONS
There are few greater contrasts on the V8 Supercars Championship calendar than that between the Armor All Gold Coast 600 and the Falken Tasmania Challenge. Just two weeks after bidding farewell to their international co-drivers and the glamorous Gold Coast, the V8 Supercars teams will tackle the rural Symmons Plains circuit for Races 23 and 24 of the 2011 championship.
EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes
It’ll be a different world for the drivers, with kerb-jumping chicanes and concrete lined 90 degree bends replaced by high-speed straights and big-commitment braking areas.
SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson
The 2.41km venue may not reward the most flamboyant drivers, but it certainly brings out the best in those with big braking confidence and unflappable concentration. Perfectly hitting three key brake markers 84 times each on Sunday afternoon is essentially what the Falken Tasmania Challenge is all about.

In championship terms, it’s now or never for Craig Lowndes. The modern day King of the Mountain freely acknowledges that street circuits are Jamie Whincup’s territory, so Lowndes will really need to make sure he’s on the top of his game at the next two events before the Homebush finale. With Garth Tander and Mark Winterbottom leading late-season resurgences from the Toll Holden Racing Team and Ford Performance Racing respectively, the 39th Australian Touring Car Championship / V8 Supercars Championship event at Symmons Plains looks set to be one of the best yet.

Q&A
Dark Horse Steve Owen takes aim for the top
After a difficult start to the season, Steve Owen and Paul Morris’ VIP Petfoods Racing team have been on the move in recent rounds.
themselves to be very good, but they’ve got a very small window with set-up and we’ve found that it’s easy to get yourselves lost. Finding what has and hasn’t worked over the course of the year has given us a huge database of information to know what to do when the car is doing this and what not to do. At Hidden Valley we made our first shootout and we haven’t been out of a shootout since, so the back half of the season has been very encouraging.
huge crashes that did a lot of damage and put us behind the eight-ball in terms of development and budget. Obviously when you’re struggling to get the car ready again for the next race you’re not developing and moving forward, so that takes its toll.
The dual Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series winner is now within touching distance of the championship’s top 15, and told Speedcafe. com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus about his lofty goals for the remainder of the season.
SPEEDCAFE: You obviously got a very good insight into how Jamie Whincup drives these cars in the 2010 endurance races. Has that helped you this year?
OWEN: It’s very important. We all know that we’re moving forwards and running competitively in the top 10 in recent races, so we want to keep that consistent form up and start regularly troubling the top five like we were on the Gold Coast. Obviously the further you are up the field that more exposure you get for your sponsors and exposure is one of the big things that keep sponsors coming back.
SPEEDCAFE: Steve, you head to Symmons Plains having shown an impressive turn of speed on the Gold Coast. Qualifying in the top six for both races up there must have been encouraging... STEVE OWEN: It was a pretty tough start to the year for us with a new car, new engineer and new driver, but in the last five rounds we’ve been qualifying in the top 10 (at least once each weekend), and we’re starting to get to terms with the car, finding out what it likes and what it doesn’t and that’s showing with our speed. SPEEDCAFE: Your pace seemed to take a real step forward at Hidden Valley. Have you tried to make the car suit your driving style throughout the year, or has it been more of a case of adapting to what the car needs? OWEN: I think that with any new combination it takes time to flourish. The Triple Eight cars have obviously proven
OWEN: Absolutely. To see from the inside how Triple Eight operates and how everybody goes about their business was a great opportunity. Obviously they’re the best team in the category, and it takes a while to bring what they do into a new team. But that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re a customer team of Triple Eight, so we’re trying to achieve the same sort of success with the same sort of gear that those goes have. Obviously it has taken the first half of the year to get on top of it and turns things around, but I really think we’re now starting to really build something. SPEEDCAFE: Certainly the accidents at the start of the year wouldn’t have assisted that whole process... OWEN: For sure. A lot of time and budget goes into rebuilding the cars when they’re that badly damaged. We had two big crashes this year, one at Adelaide which was my fault, and one at Perth which was just a product of circumstances. Both were
SPEEDCAFE: There’s been a fair bit of uncertainty around the team with regards to 2012. How important is it personally to finish the year strongly?
For me personally, I want to go out and win the races, but there are 27 other guys that want to do that too. So it’s a step-by-step process, and now that we’re consistently in the top 10 we want to be consistently in the top five like we were up on the Gold Coast. SPEEDCAFE: It’s been a while since you raced at Symmons (2007). Does that make any difference, or is it the sort of place where you’ll be on it again in five laps? OWEN: It has been a couple of years, but I’ve done it two or three times in the past, and with the nature of that track it’s not like learning Bathurst or the Nurburgring - after a couple of corners you’re back where you started! So it won’t be a big learning curve, and if we can continue the momentum that
Races 23/24 - Symmons Plains I Q&A we’ve had over the last few rounds there’s no reason why we can’t qualify in the top 10. SPEEDCAFE: Both of Paul’s cars (driven by Russell Ingall and Greg Murphy) were pretty speedy in Tasmania last year, so you must be taking some confidence from that. OWEN: Absolutely. This is really the first round where a lot of the data and the set-up from last year is more of a Triple Eight spec, like what we’re running this year. So it’s the first event where we can turn up to and go ‘right, we know last year these cars had a heap of pace.’ So that really gives us something to build on. SPEEDCAFE: So taking everything into consideration, the top five is clearly the goal for the weekend? OWEN: Yes. We need to be in the top five on a good day, and on a bad day still be in the top 10. It is harder than what a lot of people realise. I saw an interview earlier in the year where Jason Bright said it really takes 18 months for a team and a driver to gel, but we’ve been trying to get it happening a lot faster. It certainly took six months this year before we started to see some results, but we’re all working together to keep those results going through the end of the year and then be in a strong position for the first round of 2012.
“The Triple Eight cars have obviously proven themselves to be very good, but they’ve got a very small window with set-up and it’s easy to get yourselves lost.”

Symmons Plains Raceway
Season 2011 will mark the 39th occasion in which the Australian Touring Car Championship/ V8 Supercars Championship visits Symmons Plains Raceway. Located 30 minutes south of Launceston, the track hosted the championship for 30 consecutive years prior to a four year absence beginning in 2000.
circuit provides two strong passing opportunities (Turn 4 and Turn 6), in addition to a complex opening sequence of corners (Turns 1-2) that often sees even Australia’s best drivers come unstuck.
The late Peter Brock has the most event wins at the venue with five, while Ford’s Mark Winterbottom The 2.41km layout is the simplest on the calendar walked away with the most points over the two with just seven official corners. Nevertheless, the races held last year.

Races 23/24 - Symmons Plains I Tech Preview
TECH PREVIEW with
CAMPBELL LITTLE
Symmons Plains is a fairly simple race track in the fact that it really only has five corners, but the short lap of course means that it’s always incredibly close, particularly in qualifying.
Something new in pitlane this weekend is a regulation requiring two guys on each wheel gun, rather than just one. Engine and braking performance are really where all the time We’ve still only got two guns so it won’t make any noticeable is. I wouldn’t say it’s one of the hardest tracks on brakes - it difference to the pitstop times, but it should make it easier certainly used to be, but now I think you’d look at the likes ergonomically for the guys. of Abu Dhabi as the benchmark in that department. But the brake pressures at Symmons, particularly into the hairpin and Tyres at the end of the back straight, are high, so the drivers with With seven sets for the weekend we’ve got enough tyres that good braking confidence will tend to do well. we don’t have to cross-swap (switching the left-front with Pitstops Symmons always seems to be a race for track position. The fuel windows are quite open for both Saturday (120km) and Sunday (200km). For the 120km race you’ll be able to stop for fuel from about Lap 10 or 12 onwards and still make it to the end, so to an extent it’ll be about who’s the bravest on the fuel window, as well as who’s going to be brave with tyres.
right-rear and right-front with left-rear) like we’ve seen here in the past (only one set of soft tyres were allocated per race last year). Even so I think we’ll only see guys taking on two tyres per stop. You’ll only need a few seconds of fuel at each stop, so the fuel for tyre time just isn’t there. So that’ll be a bit of fun, because I’m sure we won’t want to be doing two tyres only.
13
It’s hard to say how well the tyres will live exactly. Last year we only had one set of softs per race, and teams got very good life out of them with the cross-swapping. The real variable with the tyre strategy will be whether you do rear tyres or right-hand-side tyres. It’ll be interesting to see who wants to be brave with that. We saw last year a few guys, and Mark (Winterbottom) was one of them, make mistakes on the cross-swap when they went back out, and doing right-sides only can give you quite an imbalance. Track improvement While it’s not a difficult track for tyres, the fact that the circuit doesn’t get used very often means it takes a fair amount of time to clean up. So lap times tend to decrease quite a bit from Practice 1 to 4 on Friday, and you’ll even see a real gain over the course of the 20 minute qualifying sessions.
The biggest problem in qualifying is traffic, due to both the tight circuit layout and the track improvement. We’ve seen some wild stuff in qualifying at Symmons in recent years with people spearing off trying to avoid near-stationary cars on the back straight, but I think everyone has been a bit smarter about that this year. There are still a few lunatics out there, but the opening lap issues have certainly calmed down across the year. Form It’s going to be a very hard weekend to predict. The track doesn’t require a lot of kerb or any really specific characteristics, so I think the best all round car will shine. Triple Eight were obviously good there last year that should continue, but there are a lot of cars that have the potential to do very well, including ours.

Races 23/24 - Symmons Plains I Did you know
DID YOU
KNOW
?
Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon driver Mark Winterbottom is coming home with a wet sail in the V8 Supercars Championship after snapping a near 12-month winning drought on the Gold Coast. Winterbottom’s victory on the Gold Coast was his first since Symmons Plains in November last year and has rocketed him up to fourth in the championship and within 43 points of third-placed Shane van
Gisbergen. The Ford driver has comfortably outscored all other drivers across Bathurst and the Gold Coast, scooping 519 points from the three races, 147 more than championship leader Jamie Whincup and 201 more than Ford rival van Gisbergen. Winterbottom has finished in the top five in 11 of his last 13 races at Symmons Plains since joining Ford Performance Racing in 2006.
Pepsi Max Crew’s Greg Murphy is another driver that heads to Symmons Plains with momentum on his side. The four-time Bathurst winner has scored more points than any driver in the field bar Winterbottom across the Bathurst and Gold Coast events (Winterbottom 519 to Murphy’s 480) and has closed to within just three points of 10th-placed Jason Bright in the championship.
Amazingly, Murphy has not finished in the top 10 in the V8 Supercars Championship since 2004, when he finished fourth for Kmart Racing. The pole-sitter at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, Murphy has good recent form at Symmons Plains. He was strong last year in Tasmania with a third place on Saturday (his first and only podium of 2010) and fifth place finish on Sunday.
Races 23/24 - Symmons Plains I Did you know Championship combatants Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes are looking odds-on to create a rare piece of history in the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship. The TeamVodafone pair could be the first teammates to finish 1-2 in the championship since Marcos Ambrose and Russell Ingall did it for Stone Brothers Racing in 2004. A team finishing 1-2 in the championship has only happened seven times in 51 years of ATCC/V8SC history – and never has been achieved by a Holden team. Those that have achieved the feat are Gibson Motorsport (Mark Skaife and Jim Richards in 1991 and 1992), Dick Johnson Racing (Dick Johnson and John Bowe in 1988 and 1989), Glenn Seton Racing (Glenn Seton and Alan Jones in 1993) and Moffat Ford Dealers (Allan Moffat and Colin Bond in 1977).
The fight for the Armor All Pole Position Award for the 2011 season looks like going right down to the wire with six more poles up for grabs for the rest of the season. Championship leader Jamie Whincup is on target for his fourth straight Pole Position Award with seven poles so far this year, but is being chased by teammate Craig Lowndes (five) and Mark Winterbottom (four). The other pole positions this year have been claimed by Will Davison (two) and Garth Tander, Greg Murphy, Rick Kelly and Luke Youlden (one each).
There are two drivers that have dominated at Symmons Plains since 2005 – Garth Tander and Jamie Whincup. Between them, the duo has won 12 of the 16 races held at the circuit in that time, with Tander, right winning in 2005, racking up seven wins and Whincup five. The duo has also taken five of the last six pole positions on offer in Tasmania since 2007.

Races 23/24 - Symmons Plains I The Lowndes Guide
DayTime CRAIG ON LAUNCESTON Everything moves at a slower pace in Tasmania, which suits me perfectly and it’s probably one of the reasons why I enjoy going to Launceston each year. A few months ago there was a lot of talk about this being the last year in Tasmania, but I’m glad everything has been resolved and we’ll be coming back for a few more years to come. After two of the most hectic events of the year in Bathurst and Phillip Island, it’s nice to be able to head to Tasmania and just concentrate on racing.
CRAIG ON THE FALKEN TASMANIA CHALLENGE It’s the serious part of the season, the endurance races are out of the way and there are only three rounds remaining so if you want to mount a title challenge, it has to be now. Thankfully I always seem to go reasonably well at Symmons Plains and I can’t see why this year would be any different. Some circuits just suit your driving style and this is one of them that tends to suit me a little better than Jamie. Obviously the Gold Cost was disappointing, but hopefully I can have a good run this weekend and get some points back in the championship.
EXERCISE OF THE EVENT:
BASIC SIT UP Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean you workout schedule needs to suffer. TEAMVODAFONE DRIVER CRAIG LOWNDES shows you the potential of a hotel room/ bedroom as a mini-gym with another exercise in your ‘on the move’ training programme. How to do it:
Lie on your back with your feet flat on the floor, knees bent about 90 degrees, hands clasped lightly behind your head, and elbows out to the sides.
Tuck in your chin, contract your abdominals, and roll all the way up until your chest nearly touches your knees.
Then slowly roll back down.

Strategy and mechanical issues hid this car’s pace on the Gold Coast. HRT entries typically enjoy the Symmons layout, while Tander’s record here is outstanding. Should give Winterbottom and the TeamVodafone boys a very hard time.

All three Stone Brothers Racing entries struggled for pace here last year, potentially pointing to a long weekend for Davison. Qualifying outside the top 15 would seriously hinder the prospects for a strong result.

Gold Coast again showed that qualifying speed is a big issue for this car. Memories of 2008 race victory here will be long gone by now, and a top 10 finish in either race will be a real achievement.

Continued an up-and-down season by struggling for pace at both Bathurst and the Gold Coast, where issues surrounded straightline speed and chassis set-up respectively. Was a real contender at Symmons last year however and should again be among the top 10.

Likelihood of poor qualifying but strong race pace could test van Gisbergen’s ability to stay out of trouble on such a tight circuit. Taking into account SBR’s disappointing form at this track last year, a top five finish may be a tall order.

Fiore’s quite season took a turn for the spectacular on the Gold Coast when international co-driver Gianni Morbidelli clashed with Jason Bright while driving the wrong way around the circuit. Fiore’s focus in the final part of the year should be on his 2012 plans.

Bargwanna endured largely disappointing results in the endurance races, and has not seen the top 10 since Darwin. BJR Commodores were strong at Symmons last year, but it’s hard to expect this entry to mount any sort of threat to the front-runners.

Hasn’t qualified outside the top half of the field since Perth, and should again impress in the 20 minute sessions. Race performance remains harder to predict however, with soft tyre longevity and an ability to stay out of trouble both still looming as question marks.

Ingall achieved respectable results at Bathurst and on the Gold Coast without proving particularly speedy. Had his best run of 2010 at Symmons Plains, proving a top 10 runner all weekend. Was also strong here in 2009 and shouldn’t be discounted from the top 10 reckoning this weekend.

Hasn’t had a fast race car since his outstanding run on home soil at Queensland Raceway. SBR Falcons enjoy the soft tyres, but qualifying speed is a real concern. Will struggle to see the top 10 if starting back in the field.

Has shown impressive speed in recent events, and now heads to a circuit where the PMM cars were fast last year. Anything outside the top 10 will be a disappointing result, while the top five is a lofty yet realistic goal.

Made headlines with threats of retribution on Shane van Gisbergen following a practice clash on the Gold Coast, but will be focusing on repeating his Symmons podium from last year once racing gets underway. Should be among the top 10 on pace.

Bounced back from horror Bathurst to show near-top 10 qualifying pace on the Gold Coast. Enjoyed a career best result here two years ago, and a genuine top 10 finish isn’t out of the question.

Regained the championship lead after another strong performance on the Gold Coast. Was beaten in a fair fight in Sunday’s race however - something that hasn’t happened often in recent years. Will start favourite this weekend regardless.
