W
hile the Holden versus Ford battle that has underpinned the growth of V8 Supercar racing may be on the way out, the re-emergence of Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom as a winning threat may well transform the second half of the 2011 season. The dominance of TeamVodafone, together with cameo appearances from the Toll Holden Racing Team, Jack Daniel’s Racing and Team BOC, has seen Holden draw within one win of the little heralded Manufacturer’s Award for 2011, and has provided a bleak picture for Blue Oval fans. As Ford’s flagship team, FPR’s struggle with soft tyre life has been well publicised, and still appears far from sorted. Two pole positions and a reaffirmation that the team can set the pace on the hard tyre last time out at Hidden Valley has given Winterbottom confidence that a big second half of the season could be in store however.

A strong result this weekend in Townsville will build some much needed momentum for the team as it fights not only the gluttony of competitive Holdens, but the increasingly impressive Stone Brothers Racing Falcon entries.

While TeamVodafone team-mates Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes may be looking ominously safe at the top of the points table, one can’t help but feel that the best racing of season 2011 is yet to come. Q&A with MARK WINTERBOTTOM
S
eason 2011 has been a winless one so far for Ford Performance Racing and its star driver Mark Winterbottom.
While the 30-year-old sits just ninth in the championship standings after 13 races, Winterbottom heads to Townsville’s Sucrogen 400 optimistic of a breakthrough performance. Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to the former Development Series title holder ahead of the weekend’s action. SPEEDCAFE: You’re coming off three consecutive pole positions and you had a great car here last year, so you must rate your chances pretty highly heading into the weekend? MARK WINTERBOTTOM: I think we’ll go quite well up there. We had a good run there last year, and the car is back where it should be. I think the soft tyre is going to play a big role, so that’ll be different to last year, but at least the car makes sense now, so we know which areas we need to chase. We had a good test day last week, so it’s all starting to come together. Townsville is very hard to win, we realised last year how hard it was, and we stayed out of trouble and got the victory. It’s certainly one of the toughest ones to win. SPEEDCAFE: Townsville marks the halfway point of the year (including Albert Park). How do you some up the first half that you’ve had? WINTERBOTTOM: It’s been pretty average. We’ve had some good results but no race wins, and we should be winning races. We’ve definitely underperformed, but we are starting to hit some form now heading into the big races. It’s a nice time to have form heading towards Bathurst, but having said that we’d prefer to be leading the championship! The first half hasn’t been good enough, but if we can win Bathurst and some of the other races on the run home, then we can still turn our year around. SPEEDCAFE: Has it been frustrating at times this year, to be sitting on the grid knowing that you had a fast one-lap car, but you weren’t going to be able to have the pace through the races?
6
WINTERBOTTOM: Yes, it’s certainly been frustrating. When you’re on pole, the absolute worst case should be that you lose a couple of positions and you finish fifth or still find the podium. To go from pole to finish 20th at Winton was embarrassing actually. So it has been frustrating, but at least pole positions show that I’m getting the most out of the car over the single laps. That gives me confidence and gives the team confidence as we try to make it a good race car. At Darwin we improved it a lot, which built on what we did at Winton, and it’ll be nice when we can actually go the distance and be competitive for the entire race. We’ve got the speed, we just need to turn it into a good race car. SPEEDCAFE: With the way the soft tyre will be implemented this weekend (one set per 200km race), finding success isn’t just about having a fast car over the race distance, there’s a fair bit of luck involved in how the strategies play out as well... WINTERBOTTOM: Yeah, you’ve got to be strategic, but you’ve got to be lucky as well. In Darwin van Gisbergen won the race, but he was nine seconds behind and just conserving his tyres prior to the Safety Car. So you’ve got to be smart about how you do it, but you’ve got to be lucky as well. That’s what the soft tyre has been about, mixing things up and making the racing better. You have days where it works for you and days where it works against you. Sometimes you can’t do anything about it, it’s just the way it goes. SPEEDCAFE: You’ve had a lot going on off-track this year. Has it been hard to keep focussed? WINTERBOTTOM: When I’m at the track it’s no different (to previous years). Obviously what happens off the track plays a big influence in your life, but when you put the helmet on it doesn’t make your car oversteer or understeer. I’ve definitely been busy between events, but it has nothing to do with how the car’s handling or your lap time. That’s why getting the pole positions has been good - it proves that you can drive it’s just a matter of sorting the car out.

CIRCUIT INFO
Located just south of the Townsville CBD, the circuit winds its way through Reid Park where specially constructed roads form approximately 70 percent of the circuit. Set in a parkland style reminiscent of the Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne, the Townsville circuit proved to be a challenge in its inaugural year in 2009 and quickly became a favourite of the drivers. TECHNICAL by CAMPBELL LITTLE
T
his year marks our third visit to the Reid Park Street Circuit.
Since last year they’ve resurfaced a couple of corners (Turn 3 and the Turn 7/8 chicane) with a different aggregate. I don’t think it’ll change the speed of the track it’ll just make it less prone to breaking up which is a problem that we’ve seen here in the past. They resurfaced the last three corners last year, and they may have had to do some more work after the flooding earlier in the year, but it’s the same for everyone. We’ll just turn up and see what we’ve got. Set-up Car set-up for Townsville is a real compromise, as there are two distinct facets to the layout. The first third of it is reasonably fast and requires one sort of set-up, while the last three corners require a completely different car. You can either have it for one end or the other, you don’t seem to be able to have it at both ends for the
12
types of corners that are there. The final three corners, Turn 11, 12 and 13, are probably the hardest corners, because by that stage you’ve got a lot of left-rear tyre temperature, having come from the high-speed direction change at 8 and 9, and then the long right-hander at 10. So the cars have a real tendancy to be sideways in the final three corners and you really have to drive out of that as straight as you can, because the tyres really don’t like doing two things at once. Kerbs The kerbs here are really important here. It’ll be interesting to see what V8 Supercars have got to say about a couple of the kerbs. In the past we’ve seen people taking a very large amount of kerb over the back of the circuit without any consequences. In Darwin we were told that if you put two wheels off the circuit we’d get a drive-through, but at Indy (Gold Coast) last year we saw the two leaders drive through
Races 14/15 - Townsville
chicane after chicane and got nothing, while the year before you had to give away a couple of positions if we went through a chicane. So it’s really just a matter of guessing what they are going to do next! Strategy Safety Cars will again play a big part in it. It was really interesting how it worked at Hidden Valley, because things fell the way of the guys that started on softs a little bit with the early Safety Car, as it forced everyone into two long runs to finish the race. But then the opposite happened at the other end of the race (when the Safety Car appeared again), and the guys who started on softs really lost out (Jamie Whincup and Lee Holdsworth). I think we’re seeing more and more people running the ‘conservative’ option of putting the soft tyre on last, and you’ll only see someone in the first two or three rows start on the soft because they can actually make use of it. That could prove to be completely wrong, but that’s how I’m reading it from the Grand Prix and Darwin. There are a couple of other strategies that are outside possibilities, such as going soft-hard-soft. If there’s an early Safety Car again like we saw in Darwin, that
is possible. People will be examining all options after their long runs on Friday. Tyres Having not run them here before, it’s really hard to say how well the soft tyres will last in Townsville. I think most people got fairly good mileage out of them in Darwin. They do tend to get to a point where they start dropping off massively, which is the ‘cliff’ effect they speak of in Formula One. A lot of it seems to depend on how the tyres are treated in their first five or six laps. We’ve seen (Shane) van Gisbergen and (Tim) Slade being very controlled in the first third of their soft tyre stints, and then be very strong at the end. I think we could have gone into the 1:08s easily at Hidden Valley on a green soft if we’d tried, but the fastest lap for Shane was a 10.6s. The Stones are looking after their tyres better, but it’s not simply the car, they’re using them very smartly as well. With the track surface in Townsville, last year the tyre deg wasn’t bad at all on hards, so I think that should carry over to the soft. The last three turns will be the interesting ones in terms of tyre wear.

DID YOU KNOW? Mark Winterbottom is aiming for his fourth straight championship pole position, a feat not achieved since Mark Skaife scored four straight in 1998 for the Holden Racing Team at Winton, Mallala, Barbagallo and Calder. A driver recording four or more consecutive poles has only occurred nine times in ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship history. The greatest streak remains Peter Brock’s 13 straight poles across 1979 and 1980, while Allan Moffat took nine straight across the 1971 and 1972 seasons. The other drivers to achieve the feat are Colin Bond (1975), Dick Johnson (six straight in 1988 and four straight in 1989) and John Bowe (three streaks of four within the 1994, 1995 and 1996 seasons). Championship leader Jamie Whincup, has been the dominant man in many statistical categories this year and, not surprisingly, he’s also led the most number of laps this season. The two-time champion has led 276 of 724 laps and led in 9 of the 13 races held in the 2011 V8 Supercars Championship, a rate of 38% laps led. A driver must lead the field across the start/ finish line on a lap to be considered a lap

leader. Drivers who take the lead mid-lap but lose it again before the line are not credited with a lap led. Interestingly, Mark Winterbottom has led the second most number of laps (80) but not yet won a race. Next best is Rick Kelly (77), Jason Bright (74), Garth Tander (48), Will Davison (35), Shane van Gisbergen (30), James Courtney (23), Steven Johnson (21) and Lee Holdsworth (19).
Races 14/15 - Townsville
The Pepsi Max Crew’s Greg Murphy will not only debut a new-look Commodore in Townsville – he will also start his 400th Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship race on the Saturday. The Kiwi sits 10th overall on the all-time event starts list in ATCC/V8SC history with his 400th race in Townsville coming at his 177th event. Debuting at Calder Park in 1997 for the Holden Racing Team, Murphy sits equal 10th with longtime rival Marcos Ambrose on 28 championship race wins. Holden is in the box seat to set a record for the earliest Manufacturer’s Award win in V8 Supercar history. With 11 race wins from the first 13 races, Commodore drivers only need to win four of the remaining 15 races to seal the trophy for the second year in a row for Holden. Holden won the crown four times between its inception in 1999 and 2002, before following those successes up with wins in 2004, 2007 and 2010.
The Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series is the main support category at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 with a former series winner making a return. The 2004 Fujitsu Series title holder, Andrew Jones, will return to the category for the first time since clinching the title at Mallala in August 2004. He will drive a Commodore run by Brad Jones Racing and backed by FlexiHire. Last year’s Winton Fujitsu Series round winner Cameron McConville will also make an appearance in Ben Eggleston’s ex-Walkinshaw Commodore.

THE CRAIG LOWNDES GUIDE TO TOWNSVILLE DAYTIME: CRAIG ONON TOWNSVILLE CRAIG PERTH
Townsville is a fantastic town and a really great place to showcase the V8 Supercar Championship. This is the third year we’ve been going to north Queensland and I can’t wait to get up there this weekend. Every time we go back you can see the growth of the event year to year, which is great because I think it was a part of the country that was untapped. It’s also great to get up to some warm weather at this time of year especially for all the Victorian based teams.
CRAIG ON PERTH CRAIG ON THE REID PARK CIRCUIT
The event itself is a carbon copy of the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, which is great because it means it works so well. There is an amazing atmosphere at the track across the whole weekend and everything is really accessible. I haven’t had the best run at the circuit in the past, but we’re looking to turn that around this year at what I believe is one of the best events of the year.
HOW TO STAY FOCUSSED DURING THE SEASON I think it’s something I learnt very early on in my career, you really need to have the ability to switch off during the season, so you don’t get burnt out at the races. I’m fortunate that I can escape to the farm and recharge the batteries before I have to come back to work again, but you don’t always have that opportunity during the season. You need to be able to remove yourself from racing and concentrate on something else, so that when you get back to the track you’re 100% focused.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Tander’s Darwin weekend was almost as bad as his team-mate’s - with the Hidden Valley event marking the first weekend since Abu Dhabi that car #2 did not see the podium in any race. Should bounce back into the top five this weekend however, having had a very strong car in Townsville in the past. Becoming a father and renewing HRT contract between events is unlikely to change Tander’s steely mindset.

#6 Will Davison
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Made big changes after opening qualifying in Darwin and had strong race pace across both races. Has the same issue as his team-mate in the tyre life department, so a top five would still be a very good result.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Continues to amble along as a rank outsider after another tough run in Darwin. Bad qualifying form continued, while everything seemed to go wrong in the races. Will need a lucky strategy to figure strongly if again starting from the back half of the grid this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Shocking run in Darwin has curtailed any championship hopes, but had a very fast car in Townsville last year and should be a top five contender again this weekend. Will need to qualify better than in the recent past to head into the races as one of the very favourites for victory, however.

#9 Shane van Gisbergen
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Was again the hero in Darwin thanks to the combination of speed, strategy and luck. Has a knack for conserving the soft tyres early in stints, and is aggressive when he needs to be. Unlikely to have the speed of Whincup in a straight fight, but is a genuine chance of victory regardless. Qualifying speed is still an issue.

#15 Rick Kelly
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Didn’t have the fastest car on Saturday in Darwin but kept his head when all around were losing theirs. Made mistakes on Sunday and was forced to put softs on too early and his result suffered as a consequence. Has struggled for consistency this year and may experience another results downturn this weekend if 2010 Townsville form is any indication.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Qualified solidly in Darwin, if not quite as well as at Winton, before accidents took the youngster out of both races. Should again push team-boss Rick Kelly in qualifying in Townsville, but with only one top 10 finish on the board in the opening 13 races, big results can’t be expected just yet.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Continues to step up to the plate and has found strong qualifying and race form with engineer Greg Wheeler. The DJR FG package has proven to be a race winner here with James Courtney behind the wheel, so more top five finishes could be on the cards for Johnson this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Was very strong in Darwin for the second year in a row, but Townsville is likely to prove a bigger test. Stone Brothers equipment has improved this season, but may still lack something here. Could still feature in the top 10 at the end of the races, though.

Races 14/15 - Townsville
#55 Paul Dumbrell
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Mistakes in qualifying on both days cost Dumbrell a more competitive weekend, while a first lap off in Race 12 raised the ire of a ‘guest steward.’ Speed is far better than the results suggest, but FPR tyre life remains a big issue.

#61 Fabian Coulthard
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Struggled for pace in the Top End alongside his Toll HRT stablemates - slipping down the points standings in the process. A miracle turnaround is unlikley this weekend.

Races 14/15 - Townsville
#88 Jamie Whincup
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Failed to see the podium due to an incident (Saturday) and a poor strategy decision (Sunday) at Hidden Valley, but again is the hot favourite this weekend. Has been very fast on the Townsville circuit in its first two years of existence, and was only robbed of a qualifying/races clean-sweep last year due to a brake line failure.

#888 Craig Lowndes
THE BAGMAN’S SAY Has yet to have a good run in Townsville, but is likely to continue his early 2011 season form by contending for the podium and picking up strong points. Can spring a victory, but unlikely if on same tyre strategy as team-mate Whincup.
