Round 19 - Austin I Introduction

Annexing Austin Austin EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes

It’s been a bumpy road, but the first United States Grand Prix in five years will take place this weekend at the brand new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The finishing touches are being made to the 5.5km layout during race week, with the process of the FIA requiring new Grand Prix venues to host a racing meeting prior to their first Formula 1 event having gone out the window several years ago. While teething problems are a certainty at a new event such as this, there’s little doubt that the Formula 1 community will enjoy Austin. The self-proclaimed ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ is a vibrant university town that will add its own unique charm to the already diverse Grand Prix calendar. The real question, though, is whether Austin will enjoy Formula 1.

At its heart, Austin’s culture is one of quirkiness rather than uniformity. Merchandise featuring the phrase ‘Keep Austin weird’ appears in almost every storefront along the city’s trademark Sixth Street, where one is more likely to be passed by a hybrid car or public bus than a vehicle with any sporting intent. The city clearly likes to party, but whether it will embrace the glamorous, high-speed world of F1 in quite the same way as its Australian ‘sister city’, Adelaide, used to do remains to be seen. A lack of current American drivers is a clear drawback for the event’s ability to connect with the locals, but one can only hope that the COTA showcases F1 racing at its best when it really counts on Sunday afternoon. The circuit is yet another of Hermann Tilke’s designs that appears to have too many corners for its own good, but a healthy dose of elevation change, a large Downforce Reduction Zone and the unknown effects of the new surface on the Pirelli tyres leave plenty of scope for an entertaining race. The championship is as delicately balanced as ever, with Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel leading Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso by just 10 points. Combining that with the fact that Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren was the fastest car last time out in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a race which was eventually won by Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen, sets up an intense battle for glory this weekend. Any locals expecting to see the sort of dull action witnessed at the utterly uninspiring Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course during the mid2000s is sure to be pleasantly surprised...

Austin Alive! The self-proclaimed ‘Live Music Captial of the World’ will be abuzz when the Formula 1 circus rolls into town this week. Red Bull Racing gave the locals an early taste of Grand Prix action with its show car in mid-2011, driven by current BBC commentator David Coulthard.

Round 19 - Austin I Cover Story

Formula 1’s American return Circuit of the Americas set to start new era for F1 in the United States

T

he latest chapter in the Formula 1 World Championship’s stop-start relationship with the United States of America will be written this weekend when the Circuit of the Americas fires into life for the first time. The story behind the Austin, Texas, venue and its deal to host a Grand Prix has already been a long and public one. As with many new projects there have been no shortage of doubters, with a suspension of construction activities while a promoter change took place late last year providing plenty of fuel for the fires.

The peripheries may not all be finished, but the circuit itself and the vital infrastructure are now complete and ready for racing. The COTA will therefore become the seventh venue to host the United States Grand Prix, joining Sebring (1959), Riverside (1960), Watkins Glen (1961-1980), the Phoenix Street Circuit (1989-1991) and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on the honour role. Additionally, world championship races have been held in Long Beach (1976-1983), Las Vegas (1981-1982), Detroit (1982-1988) and Dallas (1984) under various names. Like every new permanent venue added to

the Grand Prix tour since 1999, the COTA is the work of German designer Hermann Tilke. The layout packs 20 corners into 5.5km and is said to include recreations of Silvertone’s Maggots-Becketts-Chapel complex, Hockenheim’s stadium section and Istanbul’s triple-apex Turn 8. Just two turns appear able to provide any overtaking opportunities however. Turn 1 and Turn 8 (situated at the end of the Downforce Reduction System zone) both offer promise, although the former will still be a considerable challenge thanks to its uphill nature shortening braking distances.

9

Regardless of the racing quality that eventuates, Formula 1 will hope that event is the catalyst for a proper assault on the world’s biggest consumer market. Garnering the attention of the already well catered for US sports fan will not be easy, but the medium to long term benefits are as obvious as they are numerous. The COTA should be commended for at least utilising one of its country’s key Formula 1 assets in the build-up to this weekend’s race. Mario Andretti, the 1978 World Drivers’ Champion who also forged a highly successful career in American

IndyCar racing, has been one of the loudest voices when it comes to promoting the race. The 72-year-old was in fact given the task of christening the COTA layout in a Lotus 72, and speaks extremely enthusiastically of the facility and the event. “America did not have until now a permanent facility that was up to world standard for Formula 1,” he says. “This is what was needed. Now we can compete with the rest of the world and some of those new venues that have gone up in the last few years in the Middle East and Asia.

That’s the ingredient that was sadly missing here in the United States.” Another missing piece in the country’s F1 puzzle is a current driver. While many from the nearby Mexico are expected to attend this weekend’s race in support of rising star Sergio Perez, local enthusiasm would undoubtedly increase with an American on the grid. Recent decades have been extremely lean for Americans in F1. Next year, in fact, will mark 20 years since an American Continued on page 10 >>

last graced an F1 podium - a feat Michael Andretti achieved in his 13th and final race for McLaren before being dumped in favour of Mika Hakkinen. The only American to compete since Andretti was Scott Speed. Red Bull did its best to usher the Californian to the top of the sport, funding his ride through the junior formulae before graduating him into the then new Toro Rosso outfit for the 2006 season. He was replaced by Sebastian Vettel halfway through the following season without having scored a point. While Formula 1 management is currently investigating the potential to operate classes to its successful GP2 and GP3 regulations in the United States in the coming years, there are two young hopefuls already on the European openwheel ladder that are determined to carve out their own Grand Prix futures. Alexander Rossi, a 21-year-old Californian, is currently a test driver for the Caterham F1 Team - driving for the squad’s Arden-run Formula Renault 3.5 Series outfit. Joining the class last year as the reigning GP3 Series winner, Rossi also has experience in the now-defunct GP2 Asia and Formula BMW classes. Daly, meanwhile, is the 20-year-old son of former Grand Prix racer Derek, and has been competing in the GP3 Series with the Lotus F1 affiliated, ART Grand Prixrun, operation. He has also had a taste of F1 equipment this year undertaking aerodynamic test running for Force India. Not surprisingly, both drivers are excited about the prospect of Grand Prix racing in the USA, which could occur twice a year as soon as 2014 if the separate New Jersey F1 project finally gets off the ground. “There are a lot more people in America who care about it and who do want to see it succeed than people think,” says Daly of this weekend’s race. “The United States >> Continued on page 13

Round 19 - Austin I Cover Story

Alexander Rossi Grand Prix will be really cool because Austin has done an incredible job with the track and everything there. They’ve put a huge effort in, and for Formula 1—teams, sponsors, everyone—not to realise that would be a shame.” Rossi, who has completed several Friday outings with Caterham this year but will sit on the sidelines this weekend while the team’s regular drivers learn the circuit, says that it’s important that the COTA is utilised for more than just the once-a-year Grand Prix. “What I think Circuit of The Americas is doing is creating a track that’s not only a great course for drivers but also a facility that will get Americans interested in Formula 1,” he says. “The team in Austin understands that for Formula 1 to succeed in a place like the United States you have to make it a sports and entertainment event—that’s the right approach to attract a U.S. audience.” Whether or not either will make it onto the big stage remains to be seen. In the meantime, the American public will need to be made aware of Formula 1’s current galaxy of stars if the US Grand Prix really is to succeed. To that end, having Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso both fighting to win their third titles at this weekend’s penultimate race of the season seems a good a place to start as any.

Playing the World Bowl NFL player turned COTA staffer Al Hayes is ready to show Austin to the world

A

l Hays made it to the top when it came to American Football, realising his dream of playing NFL football with the New York Giants in the mid 70s. On the way he played in the inaugural World League and he finished his playing days with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League. He played with and against some great players, but he believes he is now part of the best team he has ever been a part of – and it could not be further from a football field. Hays is the Guest Services Coordinator at the Circuit of the Americas, which will host its first United States Formula 1 Grand Prix this weekend.

During the last nine months, Hays has provided members of the media, corporate guests and FIA and F1 officials with hundreds of tours of the new circuit – which has literally been built around him during that time. “This is the best team by far that I have played on and the ownership of the team is awesome,” Mays told Speedcafe.com this week. “I’m making a comeback. I’m on a team now that won’t win the Super Bowl, but the ‘World Bowl’. “We are going to open up the eyes of the world to the Elroy/Austin area in Texas and everything it has to offer.

“It is so exciting that we are opening up a whole new avenue for us internationally for Austin and the sport.” How the 60-something African American with a booming smile and welcoming handshake went from the gridiron to a 1300-acre facility a few miles outside of Austin is a classic tale of “right place, right time”. After finishing his football career he returned to his home city of Austin and worked with computer firm IBM for 20 years before being head-hunted by rival company, Dell. >> Continued on page 16

16

Round 19 - Austin I Feature It was a move, which would be a defining fork in the road for his career. He worked in human resources developing staff motivation programs and was hosting a tour group at the Dell plant when he was joined on the tour by company owner Michael Dell and one of Dell’s business colleagues, bond trader Bobby Epstein. A week later Dell rang Mays and suggested he should turn up for practice for his flag football team, where he would find that fellow billionaire Epstein was also on the team. “You can’t say no to the boss, right?,” said Mays. “The team started practicing and Bobby was on the team. We became good friends and our relationship grew from there. “I have known Bobby for 15 years. He is like a little brother to me. “He trusts my honesty and judgment and for being a people person. “I respect him and Michael for that they have achieved in business – I have admired their drive for being successful.” “Bobby always said he would like to have me on his team in the corporate world – and now it has happened.” Epstein and San Antonio billionaire Red McCombes have taken control of the Austin project with some other investors after a tangled mess with original race contract holder Tavo Hellmund. About nine months ago Epstein ticked another box when Mays “joined his team”. “I was retired about a year from Dell and was coaching high school and little league football and doing some personal fitness training,” said Mays.

“That’s one of the reasons that Bobby has me here because I share the passion for the place and I get excited.

“The tours? – I have done hundreds and hundreds of them. Several events with clients who have been back a few times.

“I don’t sell the tickets or the seats – I sell the dream.

“I have made a lot of friends from all over the world and that is beautiful.”

“The compassion I have for my ownership in Bobby Epstein and Red McCombes and other investors. All of them together make an awesome team.”

Al Hays is a good man – good enough to be sharing the owner’s suite at turn 20 this weekend.

“Bobby rang me offering the role out here and I said I would be on board as soon as possible and it has been a dream ever since.

Ironically, the only F1 car Mays has seen was the two-seater circuit ambassador Mario Andretti drove at the circuit a few weeks ago. That all changes this weekend.

“When I came here this 1300 acres had been carved out with 375 of those for the main facility.

“Let me tell you those cars are fast and loud, I cannot imagine what 24 of them will be like on the track this weekend,” said Mays.

“The track was 10 feet deep in the earth and lined with landscaping plastic. The soil was so bad it would crack.

“It has been fantastic to be here for the last nine months and watch this place come out of the ground.

“Let me tell you, I have to contain myself when I look at it now.

“This is not only a fantastic F1 venue, but a venue for multi, multi events.

Round 19 - Austin I Track Details

Circuit of the Americas Technical preview with Lotus F1’s trackside operations director Alan Permane

THE CAR Rear wing This will be at a similar level to that used in Abu Dhabi. Maximum speed reached is around 315kph, so it has a long straight, but it’s intermingled with a diverse mix of corners, both high speed and low speed. Brakes We need a suitable brake cooling level to maintain enough heat at the end of the long straight, yet not offer so little cooling that they overheat in the technical section. Balancing temperatures will be the name of the game. No problems are expected in terms of wear. Suspension Kerbs are an area which will not be known until the team arrives at the circuit, when a track walk will highlight any areas needing further contemplation. As a starting point, the Abu Dhabi set-up will be used as it’s a recent circuit with reasonable kerbs. As a counter point, India has very flat kerbs.

Tyres The most conservative allocation of the hard and medium compounds will be in use. The new layout and track surface will make trying to unlock maximum tyre performance quite challenging, and the hardest two tyres mean that degradation is unlikely to be too much of a factor in the race. Front wing A relatively high level of front wing is required to counter understeer in turns 16-18 where the car would otherwise push through the turn, killing speed and wearing the front tyres. Engine Renault Sport F1 has conducted computer simulations and engine dyno running in preparation for this new circuit. More than double the time is spent testing engine maps on the dyno than would otherwise be the case for a ‘normal race’; so approximately four days of dyno running and simulations.

THE Circuit Turn 1 There is a sizeable elevation change here

where the circuit rises steeply and drops away. Turns 2-3 Two very high speed corners which look to be flat out. Turn 11 A potential overtaking opportunity following what looks like being a third gear corner at Turn 9, followed immediately by Turn 10 which will be taken flat before heavy braking into this hairpin. Turn 12 Brakes need to be set-up so they are not too cool at the end of the long straight in preparation for heavy braking into this corner. Turns 13 - 15 This is a combination of fairly low speed second gear corners. The way it is driven will depend on the kerbs. Turn 16 - 18 Front wing levels are tailored to counter understeer in this continuous double apex sequence.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... There has been much pre-event talk that the Austin layout will be best suited to the Red Bulls, but until the cars roll out on Friday it will be difficult to tell. One could forgive Sebastian Vettel’s side of the garage for simply focussing on beating Fernando Alonso this weekend as the two drivers enter the season’s penultimate event separated by just 10 points. Vettel’s drive from the pitlane to the podium in Abu Dhabi was a mighty save, but the reliability issue in qualifying that put him in that situation was a reminder that anything can still happen. Securing the Constructors’ title this weekend is almost assured, however, as the team holds an 83 point lead with just 90 still to play for.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Not for the first time this season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix saw a seemingly certain victory for Lewis Hamilton disappear thanks to a mechanical failure. The positive for the British squad was that the team made a significant leap forward in performance from the previous event in India, where the Red Bulls and Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari had rapidly escaped down the road. With Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull fully focussed on the championship battle with Fernando Alonso, this weekend marks a strong chance for Lewis Hamilton to add another victory to his tally before leaving McLaren at the end of the season.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Ferrari vowed to work day and night between the Abu Dhabi and United States Grands Prix in order to give Fernando Alonso a winning car this weekend. The Spaniard has not won in nine races and is now a clear underdog in the championship fight against Sebastian Vettel. By its own admission, the update package that Ferrari brought to Yas Marina was not enough, leaving Alonso fortunate to benefit from Vettel’s problems. Even if genuine improvements have been found between races, jumping from seventh on the grid in Abu Dhabi to the front-row here will be a gargantuan leap. Finding the podium in the race may again be his limit.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Mercedes pair Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher have now gone four races without scoring a single point as the team continues to focus on its 2013 challenger. A major exhaust upgrade, known as its ‘Coanda’ package, introduced in Singapore hasn’t brought the gains that the team had hoped, leaving it just 12 points ahead of Sauber in the Constructors’ Championship with two races remaining. A return to the bottom end of the top 10 can be the only realistic goal for this weekend, which would likely snuff out the Sauber threat in the process.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Kimi Raikkonen and Lotus took a well earned yet fortunate victory last time out in Abu Dhabi, taking advantage of the troubles for Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton to take the trophy. Although Raikkonen is not the type of driver to rely on big results to boost his confidence, the result serves as a solid reminder to the rest of the Formula 1 paddock that the Finn is still more the capable of winning races. Unless a similarly chaotic weekend unfolds, though, it’s hard to see a repeat win eventuating. Raikkonen has still only qualified among the top four once this year, and starting from the third or fourth row will make this race a major challenge.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Force India will need to calm its two drivers if it is to hold station in the mid-field constructors battle. The team sits 29 points behind Sauber and 22 points ahead of Williams in seventh place with two races remaining. Force India was lucky to even score two points in Abu Dhabi after Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg clashed at the first corner, putting the latter out on the spot. The Scot, who will likely be a clear team leader next year when Hulkenberg departs to Sauber, will be desperate to outshine the German here having qualified behind his team-mate in each of the last four races. Hulkenberg sits just three points ahead in the points standings.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Sergio Perez will enjoy significant of attention this weekend as the United States Grand Prix’s Austin, Texas, location ensures plenty of Mexican fans will be in attendance to cheer on their hero. Ironically, Perez has failed to score a point in the four races since the announcement that he’ll join McLaren next season. The team is particularly keen to see a return to form for the 22-year-old given its Constructors’ Championship equation. The biggest unknown this weekend will be the level of tyre degradation caused by the new circuit’s surface - an issue that could play right into the hands of the typically light-on-its-feet Sauber package.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... The major interest at this team heading into the last two races is whether Daniel Ricciardo can manage to leap-frog team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne in the points standings. The Australian has out-qualified the Frenchman 15:3 so far this year, but has occupied a lower place on the points table since second round in Malaysia. A trio of eighth place finishes in Malaysia, Belgium and Korea has kept Vergne ahead, despite Ricciardo having now scored five times in the last seven races. Just two points separate the pair heading to the United States, where both will again be optimistic of finishing, but not qualifying, in the top 10.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Pastor Maldonado showed in Abu Dhabi why this year’s Williams package should never be underestimated. The Venezuelan managed to qualify among the top four for the fifth time this year before taking fifth in the race despite being hampered by a KERS issue. Bruno Senna meanwhile did his usual trick of qualifying poorly (15th) and picking his way through to score points (finishing eighth). Senna has scored points nine times to Maldonado’s four this year, yet sits 13 points and two places lower in the Constructors’ Championship.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Caterham came within a whisker of wrestling 10th place in the Constructors’ Championship back from Marussia in Abu Dhabi and will be hoping for a similarly chaotic race this weekend in Texas. Heikki Kovalainen eventually finished 13th at Yas Marina, just one position shy of that which Timo Glock achieved for Marussia in Singapore. The Caterham team, meanwhile, has undergone a significant management change between races, with owner Tony Fernandes stepping away from the position of team principal in order to focus on the company’s road car division. In his place comes Cyril Abiteboul, who joined the team as CEO just two months ago and will continue to divide his time between Caterham and Renault Sport until next year.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... HRT’s off-track fortunes continues to provide more interest than its on-track form. Its owners Thesan Capital have confirmed in the lead-up to this weekend’s event that the team is officially up for sale. A Middle Eastern buyer is said to be in serious negotiations over the purchase, which could be concluded before the end of the season. Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua, meanwhile, is being heavily linked to the team’s second seat for 2013, replacing the hapless Narain Karthikeyan.

THE BAGMAN’s SAY... Marussia must hold on for two more races before its 10th place in the Constructors’ standings can be assured. The team does not expect to be competitive against its Caterham opposition at the season finale in Brazil due to its car’s lack of KERS, but will be pushing hard to out-pace the green machines here in case chaos reigns ahead.
