Pukekohe primed as title race heats up
P
ressure is starting to mount on championship leader Mark Winterbottom as his quest to claim a maiden V8 Supercars title heads towards its climax. The title race took another twist at the Castrol Gold Coast 600 with the Prodrive Racing driver after seeing his lead slashed from 399 to 258 points. Winterbottom’s Surfers Paradise weekend began with an unsafe pit release that proved costly in the opening race. To make matter worse Frosty struggled from outright pace in the final 102 lapper which left him outside of the top 10. Frosty’s woes proved to be Craig Lowndes’ gain with the Red Bull star moving back into contention to claim a fourth championship. While it remains a tall order for Lowndes to prevent Winterbottom from claiming a breakthrough title, momentum has certainly fallen in his favour since his Bathurst 1000 triumph. With 900 points remaining, the fan’s favourite is setting his sights on reeling in Winterbottom. “It’s realistic now, absolutely,” Lowndes told Speedcafe. com of his title bid. “The Gold Coast is always a tough weekend because of the nature of the track and I’m sure Frosty will bounce
back, but we’ve just got to put the pressure on and see where we end up. “At the end of the day all we can focus on is what we can do, which is qualifying up the front and trying to beat him in every race.” The Gold Coast 600 weekend has certainly set the scene for a potentially crucial instalment of the championship at the ITM 500 Auckland this weekend. All eyes will be on Prodrive and Winterbottom to see if their Gold Coast weekend was just a blip in form or the start of cracks appearing in the team’s resolve. The championship battle may take centre stage but the trip to Pukekohe offers the championship’s four New Zealanders a chance to impress on home spoil. History suggests the natives shine in front of the Kiwi crowd so watch out for Shane van Gisbergen, Fabian Coulthard, Scott McLaughlin and Andre Heimgartner.

Six different drivers have won eight of the races held at Pukekohe 1 since the V8 Supercars returned in 2013 – Scott McLaughlin, Jamie Whincup, Will Davison, Jason Bright, Mark Winterbottom and Shane van Gisbergen.

Four of the 25 drivers on the grid are New Zealanders – Scott McLaughlin, Fabian Coulthard, Shane 3 van Gisbergen and Andre Heimgartner. Both McLaughlin and van Gisbergen have recorded wins at Pukekohe since 2013.
V8 Supercars ITM 500 Auckland I Did You Know 5 The Jason Richards Memorial 4 Trophy will be awarded for the third time, to the driver who earns the most points over the ITM 500 Auckland. The only multiple racewinning drivers in the past two years have clinched that trophy – Jason Bright in 2013, Mark Winterbottom in 2014. This is V8 Supercars’ 10th 6 year at Pukekohe since debuting in 2001. Kiwi Greg
Murphy is the most successful driver in the event’s history with nine race wins, four overall round wins and two pole positions.
Winterbottom and 5 Whincup are the form qualifiers in recent years
at the circuit. Neither have qualified outside the top 10 since joining their current teams in 2006, with Whincup’s average starting position 3.5 and Winterbottom’s 4.1.
Four current drivers have contested every V8 Supercars 8 Championship round at Pukekohe since the first in 2001. Garth Tander, Todd Kelly, Jason Bright, Craig Lowndes have been on the grid
each year, while Russell Ingall will sit out his first and shift back into the commentary box after his enduro comeback. The closest ever qualifying margin at the 2.91km circuit is 9 0.0040sec from Mark Skaife to Marcos Ambrose in 2004. However, the last seven pole positions have been decided by less
than a tenth of a second. Across the 2013 and ’14 races, the closest margin was 0.0180s from James Courtney to Mark Winterbottom for the first Saturday race last year.
Only two drivers – Garth 7 Tander and Will Davison – have won races at the
Auckland circuit from outside the top four. Davison won from fifth on Sunday in 2013, while Tander topped a reverse grid race in 2006 from eighth.
Three drivers – Ash Walsh, Cameron Waters and Andre Heimgartner 10 – are making their first appearance at Pukekohe in V8 Supercars, but each has raced at the venue prior in the New Zealand SuperTourers series.

A range of works have been undertaken, including the addition of a chicane
towards the end of the back straight which extends the circuit marginally from 2.83km to 2.91km. The change does not alter the fast and flowing nature of the circuit, which previously hosted the championship in 2007 prior to a five-year street racing experiment in nearby Hamilton. 2014 Highlight: New Zealand celebrated a home town race winner as Shane van Gisbergen won a thrilling dice with fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin. 2015 Event Information: Friday: 2x60 minute Practice Sessions Saturday: 2x 15 minute Qualifying, 2x 60km Races Sunday: 1x 20 minute Qualifying, 1x 200km Race Tyre Format: 16 hard compound and 4 soft compound tyres will be supplied to each entry. TV Times The 2015 V8 Supercars Championship will be broadcast on Network 10 and Foxtel as part of a new television rights deal for this year. Foxtel will televise every practice, qualifying and race live through its Fox Sport channels.
