The new boy battle

O

ne of the strengths of Speedcafe.com’s online platform is the level of engagement that it enables with the Australian motorsport fanbase.

Complementing the site’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, the Pirtek Poll allows readers to cast their vote on a hot topic in the sport each week. Among the more interesting results of late followed a question asking whether Nissan or Mercedes will be the first new-for-2013 brand to break into the V8 Supercars winner’s circle. The poll, conducted in the lead-up to this weekend’s Barbagallo round, saw almost 70 percent of the near 2,500 votes chalked up in favour of the Japanese manufacturer. The Altimas have undoubtedly come out of the blocks faster than their E63 AMG rivals, with Rick Kelly and James Moffat both scoring top 10 finishes for Nissan last time out at Pukekohe. Both of the new cars still need plenty of development in order to be at the very front of the field, however, and it’s the pace at which that progress can be made that will dictate who wins first. Only time will reveal the true result, but I for one don’t think we should underestimate the firepower of HWA and AMG Customer Sports in this battle. As workers at Nissan Motorsport’s Melbourne base begin the process of attempting to adapt engine parts that Nismo in Japan previously developed for its 5.6 litre GT version of the VK56DE motor, Erebus will this weekend roll out a key engine upgrade that has been developed in Germany especially for the V8 Supercars program. The E63s have already come a long way from their ‘glitchy’ Adelaide start, and it won’t be a surprise to see Lee Holdsworth pushing into the top 10 on pure pace at Barbagallo. With a second major engine upgrade coming for Erebus in a few months time, the battle of the new brands might not be as one sided as many are expecting.

What to watch out West W

ide-open tyre strategies, a simmering rivalry, the emergence of a new star and an array of technical upgrades point to an intriguing fourth round of the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship at Barbagallo Raceway.

Tyre torture

T

here may not be any compulsory pitstops in this weekend’s three-race format, but that doesn’t mean the rattle guns will lay silent. The coarse Barbagallo surface is renowned as the toughest on tyres in the entire championship, and expecting the soft

compound rubber to last the full 120km distance for each Sunday race will be a big ask. Last year Will Davison won the final race on Sunday after a remarkable 31 lap stint home on the 17-inch soft rubber. By the chequered flag, however, his lap times had blown out to a full three seconds slower than the fastest of the race. With two 42 lap races this weekend and a short pitlane to transverse, many will be tempted to pit. If there is a Safety Car, which have traditionally been relatively frequent at Barbagallo thanks to the deep sand traps,

the decision will likely be a no-brainer. Teams like Rick Kelly’s Nissan Motorsport, which does not have the outright pace of the front-runners, are most likely to gamble in order to get a big result. “I think you might see a few pitstops in Sunday’s races,” he says ahead of the weekend. “It’s really touch-and-go as to whether you can get through on one set or if it will be quicker to pit and run two sets a bit harder. “I can’t wait to see how it shakes out. It gives us an opportunity to outperform the others in the strategy side of things.”

Whincup versus Winterbottom

J

amie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom collided twice during the most recent event at Pukekohe, bringing to the surface a rivalry that has developed right through karts, Formula Ford and 10 years of V8 Supercar racing. Both incidents in New Zealand occurred when the pair were fighting for the lead of the respective races. The first saw Winterbottom spin while trying to pass Whincup, while the second saw Whincup bump-pass the Pepsi Max Ford – a move

that earned the Red Bull Holden driver a 15 point penalty. The pair have since continued their jousting verbally, but would both be advised to keep their cool once racing resumes in the West. Winterbottom’s team-mate Will Davison has, after all, largely flown under the radar on his way to the current status of championship leader, while Brad Jones Racing pair Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright continue to set the pace. More car-to-car combat between the #1 Red Bull Holden and the #5 Pepsi Max Ford won’t be good for either party.

The Chazzle Dazzle

C

haz Mostert will make his long awaited V8 Supercars Championship debut this weekend after leaving his MW Motorsport Dunlop Series entry for a seat at Dick Johnson Racing.

The arrival of Mostert signals a big test for incumbent DJR driver Tim Blanchard who, despite an impressive junior record, is still an unproven quantity in V8 Supercars.

New pieces, new hopes

T

The DJR Fords have languished at the back of the field so far this year, but that hasn’t stopped the likes of Mark Winterbottom suggesting that the 21-year-old will be able to shoot straight into the top 10.

his weekend’s event at Barbagallo appears to be a mini version of Formula 1’s Spanish Grand Prix, where the teams traditionally roll out their first major upgrades following a busy start to the season.

The cars are packed with FPR running gear (engine aside) and Mostert will be assisted by FPR engineer Adam De Borre, so the potential is undoubtedly there for an impressive debut.

Although all teams will have worked to refine their packages since Pukekohe, Erebus Motorsport and the Holden Racing Team are expected to be sporting the most radical changes.

“Pace-wise he’s definitely going to be there straight away,” Winterbottom told Speedcafe.com after both he and Mostert tested the #12 Ford and Morgan Park last week. “If he gets it right in qualifying I think he can be in the top 10 comfortably.”

The former will be running a highly publicised engine homologation change which sees it move from a two to an eight butterfly inlet manifold and from a driveto-wire to a cable throttle.

Driveability rather than outright horsepower is what the team is chasing, but that alone could be worth up to 0.4s per lap, according to Erebus CEO Ryan Maddison. A 0.4s gain for Lee Holdsworth in first qualifying at Pukekohe would have been the difference between 21st and eighth... The HRT meanwhile has made progress on a new front-end package that, although untested, is expected to be seen on both cars in Perth. The factory Holden outfit has already enjoyed a strong start to the season, with Garth Tander and James Courtney scoring four podiums between them. It won’t take much of an improvement to see Team Red finally snap its losing streak that dates back to Bathurst, 2011.

12

DID YOU

KNOW

?

W

ith seven race winners from nine races so far, the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship can instantly be labelled the most competitive on record to this point.

Never before in Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship history has there been that sort of variety in the race winner’s list from the first nine races. The two multiple race winners - Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright - are both from the same Brad Jones Racing squad, while Coulthard and Fujitsu Racing GRM’s Scott McLaughlin have both won their first championship races this season. Five different teams - Red Bull Racing Australia, Tekno Autosports, Brad Jones Racing, Fujitsu Racing GRM and Ford Performance Racing - have collected the nine race wins. In total contrast, two teams - Red Bull Racing Australia (then known as TeamVodafone) and Ford Performance Racing - won all 30 championship races last year between their four drivers. This statistic clearly illustrates how much the 2013 ‘Car of the Future’-specification machines have shaken up the order.

N

issan makes its return to Barbagallo for the first time in over two decades this year and the Western Australian venue is one with plenty of history for the manufacturer. George Fury led home Glenn Seton in a 1-2 finish in the single-race 1986 round at the circuit in a DR30 Skyline Turbo, while Seton won a year later in 1987, also in a DR30. Nissan claimed another 1-2 result in 1991 when Mark Skaife led home Jim Richards in their mighty GT-Rs. The result was a special one too given it was Skaife’s very first ATCC/V8SC victory. Rick Kelly remains the highest-placed Nissan driver in the championship - he currently sits 13th in the pointscore. He qualified a season-high 12th at Pukekohe and also had a season-high race finish of seventh there. Meanwhile, Erebus Motorsport continues to make history in the V8 Supercars Championship and their trip to Barbagallo will also be a ‘first’. No Mercedes-Benz of any kind has ever raced in the ATCC/ V8SC at Barbagallo Raceway since the championship first visited the circuit in 1973. However, the venue does hold a unique place in ATCC/V8SC history given it was the site of the first - and only - appearance of a Subaru in a championship race in 1973.

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

Elmer Vajda qualified a whopping 25.2 seconds off Peter Brock’s pole-sitting Torana XU-1 and finished 11th, nine laps down on winner Allan Moffat’s Falcon GT-HO - in a 35 lap race!

W

hile the 2012 domination of victories by Ford Performance Racing and Triple Eight has most certainly been broken in 2013, their rivals will have to go a long way to topping their recent success at Barbagallo.

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

The two teams have claimed 10 of the last 11 races wins since 2008 between their four drivers - Mark Winterbottom (four), Jamie Whincup (three), Will Davison (two) and Craig Lowndes (one). And the only team to stop them? It’s the same team that is the current ‘form’ team, Brad Jones Racing ...

T

he number of hometown drivers for the Barbagallo event has been halved since last year with Garth Tander and Dean Fiore the only Western Australians on the grid for this year’s Chill Perth 360. While Tander’s record is well-known, Fiore has been racking up a range of career-best results so far this year in the #88 Dodo Insurance Racing Commodore for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport. The 29-year-old recorded a careerbest ninth place at Symmons Plains and equaled his career-best qualifying of 10th at the same event. He currently sits 20th in the V8 Supercars Championship. Last year Fiore racked up his best Barbagallo V8SC results, qualifying 11th for the first Sunday race and finishing 15th in the final race.

T

he tight ‘bullring’ nature of the Barbagallo circuit - plus the awaiting sand traps for those that fall off the road - generally mean the appearance of the Safety Car is likely at some stage. Since 1998 - a span of 41 races - the Safety Car has appeared in 49% of ATCC/V8SC races at Barbagallo Raceway.

www.speedcafe.com

All-In-One Security

The last time it appeared in all three races at Barbagallo was 2007, while the last time it didn’t appear at all was 2011 - though this was the first time since 2001 that this had occurred. No event has been able to come close to 2005 though, when the Safety Car was called for seven times across the three races.

The Bagman says...

A

s close as the V8 Supercars field has been so far in 2013, it’s hard to bet against a Brad Jones Racing victory at Barbagallo. Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright have taken five of the last seven race wins between them across the Symmons Plains and Pukekohe events, capped off by the latter’s emotion-charged success in the Jason Richards Trophy. Barbagallo has also been one of the team’s best venues in recent years, with Bright scoring BJR’s first ever V8 Supercars Championship race win at the venue two years ago. Last year, Bright turned around a tough start to the season with a competitive West Australian showing that included a surprise pole position. Qualifying, though, has been Bright’s weak point this year. His qualifying average of 8.4 is almost five places worse than team-mate

Coulthard’s mark of 3.6. Disqualification from the Race 6 Top 10 Shootout is the only time that Coulthard has qualified worse than fifth. The Ford Performance Racing Falcons did not score a single pole at Pukekohe but were very fast in race trim. The team also swept the three victories at Barbagallo last year, and could well prove BJR’s biggest threat. After all, it will be tyre life, not pure qualifying pace, that determines the Sunday race winners. Other usual suspects Red Bull Racing and the resurgent Holden Racing Team should also be strong contenders, while

impressive rookie Scott McLaughlin is an almost certain top 10 runner. Don’t discount Clipsal 500 winner Shane van Gisbergen from the mix either, although his form on the soft tyre at Symmons Plains was less than sterling. Time will tell if that mid-pack performance can be shaken this weekend. The Nissan and Mercedes runners will be eying the tail end of the top 10, particularly on Sunday, where strategy will come into play. Expect Rick Kelly and Lee Holdsworth to lead the respective charges.
