Who will be crowned King of the Mountain
I
n a sport where change is inevitable, the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 has stood the test of time and remains the undisputed holy grail of Australian motorsport. This year is no different with the iconic Mount Panorama circuit set to echo to the noise of 27 V8 Supercars all vying to conquer one of the world’s greatest race tracks and etch their name on the coveted Peter Brock Trophy. Mount Panorama’s famous ribbon of tarmac continues to offer up stories to that will live long in the memory with Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris’ last to first triumph from last year still fresh. However, the time for reflection is over as the V8 Supercars circus makes the annual pilgrimage to Bathurst to see who will become King of the Mountain in 2015. As ever the nature of this 1000km race ensures that come Sunday there will be a lit of contenders in the mix to take out the big one. Judging by the form book it is hard to ignore Prodrive Racing Australia after such a dominant cam-paign that has seen the Melbourne team record wins in 15 of the last 18 championship races. The squad is eyeing a third consecutive success at the mountain but this year’s race is arguably more important given the current championship standings. Mark Winterbottom heads Chaz Mostert and David Reynolds with the trio and their respective co-drivers Steve Owen, Cameron Waters and Dean Canto armed with the best machinery on the grid. However, the bookies state that Red Bull Racing Australia’s Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell are the
favourites despite winning just three races this term. The pair famously missed out on victory last year when Whincup ran out of fuel on the last lap which will fire them up this year. Craig Lowndes’ supreme Bathurst record that has seen him win five times and finish on the podium in seven of the last 10 races, ensures he is among the contenders alongside Steven Richards. The Holden Racing Team has shown signs of a resurgence which promises to continue, while Shane van Gisbergen, Scott McLaughlin and the Brad Jones Racing entries have all proved quick in recent times. Nissan and Erebus must not be ignored either after impressive results last year highlighted by a podium for James Moffat and Taz Douglas, while Will Davison brought his Erebus Mercedes home in fourth. This year sees the grid bolstered by two wildcards to add yet further drama with Simona de Silves-tro and Renee Gracie becoming the first all female pairing since 1998. They are joined by a family run entry from Aaren and Drew Russell. Coupled with Bathurst’s famous unpredictability another cracking instalment of The Great Race is on the cards.

Racing Australia is aiming for its third straight Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 win after 1Prodrive success in 2013 and 2014 under the Ford Performance Racing banner. Craig Lowndes is a five-time 2 winner with 12 podium finishes – he sits tied for the record with the late Peter Brock, Jim Richards and Larry Perkins – so one more podium will give him the record. Holden and archrival Ford 4 are tied for most pole positions in Bathurst history with 21 apiece.
Should Chaz Mostert and 5 Cameron Waters will this year, they will become the youngest-
ever combination to claim victory in the history of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Mostert, 23, and Waters, 21, would undercut the previous record set in 1996 when Craig Lowndes (then 22) and Greg Murphy (then 24), won for the Holden Racing Team.
The 2015 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is the 55th running 3 of Australia’s greatest motor race with Holden aiming for its 30th victory and first since 2012.

For the first time 7 since 1984, three sets of brothers line
up at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in Will and Alex Davison (Erebus Motorsport V8), Rick and Todd Kelly (Nissan Motorsport) and wildcards Aaren and Drew Russell (Novocastrian Motorsport). DJR Team Penske’s Marcos 8 Ambrose is making his first Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 start in a decade. Ambrose is one of only two drivers to take pole position on debut (2001) but has never finished better than fourth. This year is the first since 1975 a member of the Johnson family has not started the Great Race.
There are seven rookies in the field: four-time Champ Car World 6 Series winner Sebastien Bourdais, 2012 Australian Formula Ford Champion Jack Le Brocq, second-generation driver Macauley Jones,
Newcastle brothers Aaren and Drew Russell and female drivers Renee Gracie and Simona De Silvestro.
Five sons of previous 10 Bathurst champions line-up this weekend across
the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. One as a primary V8 Supercar driver in James Moffat (son of four-time winner Allan) and two as codrivers in Steven Richards and Jack Perkins (son of seventime winner Jim Richards and four-time winner Larry Perkins) in the 1000. The other two compete in the V8 Utes, with Ryan Hansford (son of late Gregg Hansford, 1993 winner) and Gerard McLeod (son of 1987 winner Peter McLeod) hitting Mount Panorama.
It is the first time since 1998 an all-female driving team has entered 9 the 1000. International driver Simona De Silvestro and local Dunlop Series racer Renee Gracie make their debuts at Mount Panorama in a V8 Supercar as the Harvey Norman Supergirls. The last time a female raced in the 1000 was 2009, with Leanne Tander behind the wheel.

The circuit is public road on non-race weekends and has also hosted the Australian Grand Prix in the past. It remains one of the all-time favourite circuits of V8 Supercar drivers and is ranked among the great race tracks of the world.

TV Times The 2015 V8 Supercars Championship will be broadcast on Network 10 and Foxtel as part of a new television rights deal for this year. Foxtel will televise every practice, qualifying and race live through its Fox Sport channels. Network 10 will broadcast six events live while providing same day highlights packages from the remaining meetings.
