Greens’-Tuf returns to Mount Panorama

Dick Johnson marks 30 years since one of Bathurst’s most frightening crashes

T

his weekend’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 will see Dick Johnson Racing celebrate 30 years since one of the most memorable moments in the team’s, and the event’s, long and chequered history. Its lead Ford Falcon FG for Chaz Mostert and Dale Wood will Our be respledent in a Greens’-Tuff livery resembling the XE model Falcon that Dick Johnson himself destroyed against the Forrest’s Elbow trees in the 1983 Hardies Heroes qualifying run-off.

In the following extract from his book Bathurst: Celebrating 75 Years of Racing at Mount Panorama, Gordon Lomas tells the story of Johnson’s lucky escape and the remarkable efforts that followed. In the Saturday run-off for the top 10 grid positions in the hugely popular Hardies Heroes, Dick Johnson had visions of knocking Brock off his perch, confident his Greens Tuf-backed XE Falcon had the grunt to muscle its way onto the prime grid spot.

Johnson had sent a message to Brock in qualifying before the shootout that the Falcon had the power to give the 05 car grief. As Johnson thundered up Mountain Straight, there were hints given by the car’s

errant behaviour that something serious was about to unfold. As the #17 Falcon scooted down the mountain, it entered the left-hander, Forrest’s Elbow, into Conrod Straight and

1 was on track to occupy what would be a crucial front-row berth in the top 10 run-off.

This was arguably the greatest-ever escape at the mountain.

But on the exit, the right rear of the green Ford grazed the Armco barrier.

Prior to that sickening crash at Forrest’s Elbow, Johnson had complained of understeer - the Falcon wanting to push on (understeer) and not turn into a corner - so the crew had performed changes to the front-end.

The car had been, up to that point, extremely quick and had the crowd cheering wildly as it oversteered like a brumby resisting all attempts to be broken in. The Falcon straightened up nicely after kissing the barrier, but there was a problem that Johnson had not foreseen. At the end of the barrier was a tyre bundle filled with concrete, which had been put there as a safety device for the hill-climb events that went up Conrod Straight in the opposite direction to the touring cars, as well as for everyday road traffic for the remainder of the year. But what had been implemented for safety had now become a potentially lethal danger. As the Falcon straightened, it almost instantly clipped the tyre bundle, which broke the steering.

He recalls the chilling accident with remarkable calm, yet there remains a passage of time that is lost to his memory. “I still had my boot fair into it. I knew the lap was going to be pretty good. You could tell by the punters, who had all their flags waving that sort of shit. “I went into Forrest’s Elbow the way I normally went in, but it understeered a bit towards the wall, and then it just clipped the back and that dragged the front in. “I had been complaining to George (Shepheard, who ran Dick’s team) all weekend that the car wasn’t comfortable going into the right hander and that whatever adjustments they did made it a bit worse.

“When I go to the end of the wall, it grabbed the front wheel and broke the steering and just threw me into the bush.

So Johnson was, from that point on, a passenger on a terrifying ride where there was no sand pit to arrest unfettered speed; merely scrub and dirty, great big gum trees.

“So I was there knocking down a couple of trees and having a bit of a duck and weave and then the car stopped.

2 “It was all blank from then until I walked along the back road and into our garage at the rear of the pits, and I saw Jilly and John and Marie French.” The car was destroyed; Johnson’s team somehow had to pull a rabbit out of the hat and acquire a replacement in less than 24 hours, otherwise he would not be able to start. A stroke of luck fell the way of the witty Queenslander, who started to regain his sense of humour when the team managed to commandeer a Falcon from another competitor, Andrew Harris. Ross Palmer, Johnson’s major sponsor, was always a quick thinker, and he came up with a simple yet ingenious idea whereby he effectively became a used race-car dealer on the spot. “I had to buy a race car and trade another so that Dick could race,” Palmer explains. “So I bought Barry Lawrence’s car and gave it to Andrew Harris, who gave us his Falcon to race. It was worth a shot. “It wasn’t a lot of money, from memory - only about $25,000. It was an all-nighter, preparing the Falcon. “The next morning, the paint was still wet and you couldn’t do anything with it, couldn’t test it. It was green by name and nature.

The Falcon was brought to an abrupt halt by the timber that lay in its path.

“I tried to get out of the driver’s side but the door wouldn’t move, so I crawled out of the passenger side. Once I got out of the car, I don’t remember another thing.

“I remember, during the race, the commentator crossed to the in-car camera and asked Dick how the car was going, and he replied instantly with, ‘it’s such a dog it should be tied to a fence’.”

Johnson managed to escape the crumpled Falcon unhurt and was given a lift back to the pits by Brock.

“Apparently Brock stopped and gave me a lift, which is probably why my memory went,” Johnson chuckles.

3 which had proved beneficial in a time of crisis, but the team had had no time to tune the replacement machine. Jim Richards notes that lessons were learnt following Johnson’s near miss. “The same bumps I encountered on the road when I first drove at Bathurst in ‘74 are still there now, even though it’s been resealed and resurfaced a few times. “We’ve got smarter about things around the mountain, like the concrete wall coming out of Forrest’s Elbow. “Where the Armco barrier used to finish, the tyres that buggered Dick up are gone. “If they weren’t there, Dick would never have ended up in the forest. He would have gathered it back up, no trouble, and shot down Conrod. “The amazing part to that incident was that they managed to assemble another car and add all of the Johnson bits and pieces overnight.

4 “They are the stories that really make Bathurst an iconic race.” In the race the next day, Johnson and Kevin Bartlett made it through 61 laps before the Falcon developed an electrical problem that led to the gearbox seizing. Andrew Harris and his co-driver Gary Cooke, ended up driving the Commodore that had been purchased by Ross Palmer into 10th place.

ed Bull cars dominate betting for the Great Race Ladrokes.com.au has assessed Red Bull Racing Australia’s twin Commodores as pronounced favourites for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Although the Holden Racing Team has experienced a mixed run this year, its #22 factory Commodore to be driven by 2010 series champion James Courtney and fourtimes Bathurst winner Greg Murphy is on the fourth line of betting at $13.

On the back of the Brisbane squad’s Sandown 500 victory and its phenomenal strike rate at the mountain, the #1 Commodore of Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell are on the top line of betting at $3.

The sister #2 HRT car of Garth Tander and Nick Percat (who won the race in 2011) are next at $14.00.

The 2-1 quote comes on the back of their Sandown triumph and victory in the 161lap Bathurst enduro last year. Lowndes, who has won Bathurst five times, and his experienced team-mate Warren Luff, are expected to push for equal or outright favouritism in the #888 machine once practice begins on the traditional Thursday of Bathurst week.
