As discussed at length elsewhere in this Race Guide, the sheer number of unknowns heading into the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship makes for an exciting prospect. Adding new rules and new marques to the usual off-season team/driver/ engineer/sponsor line-up changes means there’s more intrigue than ever ahead of this weekend’s opening round. It’s worth taking a moment, then, to savour the fact that this momentous occasion will take place in front of a packed house at the history-laden Adelaide street circuit. Not only is the Clipsal 500 a highlight of the V8 Supercars calendar, it sits up there as one of the greatest domestic motor racing events on Earth. In terms of attendance per capita, local media coverage and general community engagement evident around the city in race week, it’s far and away the best of V8 Supercars’ four remaining street events. Looking at raw crowd figures, it compares favourably with anything outside of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which has the inherit advantage of an enormous home population. Germany’s DTM attracts a larger average event crowd across the season than the V8 Supercars, but its marquee races, such as at the Hockenheimring (road course) and Norisring (street circuit), only rate at half the Clipsal 500’s weekend attendance figure, which is again expected to push 300,000 this year. Likewise, Japan’s popular SuperGT series boasts no event that comes close to Clipsal’s attendance. A lack of any street events admittedly doesn’t help the category’s cause, but it puts the Adelaide event’s success in perspective, regardless. It’s almost unthinkable that, just two years ago, the V8 Supercars Championship season began in front of empty grandstands at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi. With all the effort that has gone into getting 28 of these Car of the Future specification vehicles on the grid for the opening race, it’s only fitting that they debut on a such a grand and welcoming stage.

Here are the four factors to look out for this weekend and across the entire 2013 season. ™

Triple Eight versus FPR The change to the Car of the Future regulations has paved the way for some exciting new entries into the V8 Supercars Championship in 2013, but don’t expect recent pace-setters Triple Eight Race Engineering and Ford Performance Racing to have lost their edge over the off-season. The two teams utterly dominated last year, winning all 30 championship races between them. They both enjoy strong

budgets, immense engineering depth and two of the most imposing driver line-ups in the category - three factors that remain the same year-on-year. Not surprisingly, Triple Eight and FPR were the first two teams to put their new-generation

cars on track in 2012, and had been heavily involved in the formulation of the categorywide technical package from the outset. All Holden teams have had to deal with the late introduction of the VF model Commodore bodywork, but its on-track

FPR also has new commercial backing in Pepsi Max, but their other changes introducing a fourth car for Alex Davison, restructuring its engineering department and a move from Prodrive to private ownership - do have some potential to upset the applecart.

Regardless, it’ll take a very impressive effort for anyone to come out of the blocks faster than these two this weekend. It’ll be even more surprising if anyone can beat the Jamie Whincup/Craig Lowndes/Mark Winterbottom/ Will Davison quartet to the title. Parity Having drifted out of the day-to-day V8 Supercars vernacular over the last four years, parity will likely be one of the key talking points all season thanks to the new rules. The category has tried its best to prepare for the new Nissan Altima and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG entries, but balancing the desires of four parties will clearly be more difficult than two.

There is the potential for angst, too, between Nissan and AMG themselves, with the permitted specifications of their respective engines having seemingly been framed around how much time the two teams had to ready their new steeds, rather than a clear and openly discussed single rulebook. Some of the technologies in the E63s at the Sydney test certainly raised eyebrows... Both new brands will start off a little underdone in the horsepower department, but it shouldn’t take them long to catch-up and, potentially, surpass the Ford and Holden units. That’s when the fun will really start.

characteristics were surely of no surprise to Triple Eight, whose technical director Ludo Lacroix designed the aerodynamic package. The other major change at Triple Eight, moving from Vodafone to Red Bull backing, should only add more pep to the team’s step.

First and foremost, the fact that the two new brands are both entering with single team representation is a notable departure from the landscape in which previous Ford versus Holden parity wars were waged. Neither Kelly Racing nor Stone Brothers Racing have been consistent winners in recent years, so expect plenty of snide remarks and finger pointing in the paddock if they start picking up too many trophies in their new guises. On the technical front, engines loom as the biggest bone of contention, with V8 Supercars having to equalise the double-overhead-cam powerplants of the new players with the pushrod utilising incumbents.

Fuel economy meanwhile is the biggest unknown. While the majority of the calendar has been changed to reduce the emphasis on frugal consumption, the some of the biggest events - such as the Bathurst 1000 could well be decided by fuel numbers. All-In-One Security

Things should be quieter on the aerodynamic front, although the relatively archaic nature of the category’s open-air testing procedures and the ‘now or never’ pressure of the final aero thanks to the lateness of the E63’s availability do leave some room for arguments further down the road.

Reliability Like parity, the question of reliability largely went away in the latter years of the previous generation rule package thanks to a full 20 years of mechanical refinement. The number of unknowns with the new car, however, is immense, and no amount of testing at Queensland Raceway, Winton or Sydney Motorsport Park will have been able to prepare the cars for the punishment they’ll endure during two 250km legs around the streets of Adelaide.

In truth, everything from the new doubleoverhead-cam Nissan and Mercedes engines to the control 18-inch wheels will be put under the microscope in Adelaide. The ability of the cars, particularly the new Independent Rear Suspension set-up, to deal with car-to-car and car-to-wall contact is also currently unclear.

Engel heads to the Clipsal 500 after just two brief tests in his new SP Tools-backed Mercedes, and will be doing well to keep his team-mates within sight around the streets of Adelaide. Like the Mercedes package, it’s likely that we won’t see the best of Engel for some time yet.

Additionally, the Holden, Nissan and most likely Mercedes teams will all need to be wary of their spare parts supplies throughout the weekend, particularly in the bodywork department. Those unable to keep their cars away from the walls in the lead-up sessions may not even get to see the grid on Sunday. Rookies Four drivers will make their debuts as full-time V8 Supercars Championship drivers this season, headlined by Erebus Motorsport’s left-field recruit Maro Engel. The amiable German arrives into the championship with a wealth of experience in the British Formula 3 Championship, the DTM and various FIA GT3 events. His DTM results weren’t exactly stellar, but by the same token, he was never given the chance to compete with a current generation car.

Three rookies of the remaining rookies- Tim Blanchard, Scott McLaughlin and Scott Pye - are Dunlop Series graduates, while Jonny Reid joins Dick Johnson Racing after two impressive seasons in the Carrera Cup. Blanchard has the most experiencein V8 Supercars after contesting the final six rounds of the last year’s main game with Kelly Racing, but like Reid, has jumped into a less than prepared DJR outfit for the new season, and could struggle. McLaughlin and Pye join Garry Rogers Motorsport and Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport respectively after taking the top two places in last year’s Dunlop Series, and appear capable of pushing the top 20 from the outset. Although Pye is armed with a Triple Eight built-car, one must remember that he only ran one season in the second-tier series compared to the three of McLaughlin. Patience will be key for all five rookies in Adelaide.

Circuit Description The former Formula One venue is renowned for being one of the best street circuits in the world. Shortened from its Grand Prix length by 700 metres, the circuit is very busy from inside the cockpit and, apart from the run down the back straight, gives rivers very few opportunities to relax. The circuit featured major resurfacing work for 2009 as well as new pit lane facilities. The Clipsal 500 Adelaide was first held in 1999 (under the name Sensational Adelaide 500), while the GP-length circuit hosted an American Le Mans Series race on New Years’ Eve in 2000.

Event Format: Friday: Practice will comprise four 30 minutes practice sessions. These are followed by a 20-minute qualifying session and a Top Ten Shootout to decide the grid for Saturday’s first race. Saturday: A 20-minute warm-up in the morning prior to the first 250km race of the weekend in the afternoon. Sunday: A single 20-minute qualifying session determines the grid for the afternoon’s second 250km race of the weekend. Tyre Format: A total of 32 hard compound tyres will be supplied to each entry this weekend. Teams may also bring 12 pre-marked tyres per entry to use in Friday practice.

ith the debut of all-new ‘Car of the Future’specification machines in the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship, a total of 28 brand new race cars will all be making their racing debut at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide. This is the first time in Australian Touring Car Championship/ V8 Supercars Championship history that an entire field of new cars will be making their racing debut on the one weekend. The breakdown for this season sees 15 of Holden’s Commodore VF take on six Ford Falcon FGs, four Nissan Altimas and three Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGs. Of the 15 Commodores, six have been produced by Triple Eight Race Engineering (for themselves, Tekno Autosports and Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport), four by Walkinshaw Racing (for themselves and Tony D’Alberto Racing), three by Brad Jones Racing and two by Garry Rogers Motorsport.

he 2013 Clipsal 500 is a history-making event in many ways for Dick Johnson Racing and the Johnson family, although it’s not quite the kind of history that would have been hoping for. With Steven Johnson stepping down from full-time driving duties with Dick Johnson Racing and focusing on his role as General Manager, this year’s Clipsal 500 will be the first time since the final round of the 1980 ATCC at Oran Park that there has not been a member of the Johnson family competing in an ATCC/V8SC event. Since the beginning of the 1981 season there has been a Johnson - whether it be Dick, Steven or both - on the grid for 351 consecutive ATCC/V8SC events, spanning 33 seasons. From the 1999 Queensland 500 onwards, Johnson Jnr has competed in 178 ATCC/V8SC consecutive events. This year will be the first time that a Johnson has not competed in the Clipsal 500 given Dick raced in the inaugural event in 1999 and Steven has driven the team’s #17 entry since 2000.

On that day - Sunday June 21, 1992 - a young Mark Skaife drove his GT-R to two race wins, the round win and his first of five ATCC/V8SC crowns. Outside of Ford and Holden, Nissan have the most race wins by a manufacturer in the ATCC/V8SC - 28. In a similar vein, the debut of Erebus Motorsport V8 and its three Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGs marks the first time a Mercedes-Benz has competed in an ATCC/V8SC event since 1990. The date was July 16, 1990 at the final round of the Australian Touring Car Championship at Oran Park in Sydney and Phil Ward (who later founded the Aussie Racing Cars category) drove his Mercedes-Benz 190E to 13th overall after qualifying 23rd.

our-time Clipsal 500 winner and reigning V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup has made the streets of Adelaide his second home. He has led laps in the last 11 races straight in Adelaide. The last time he didn’t lead a lap in a Clipsal race was way back in the Sunday race in 2007! All up he’s led 375 laps of the Clipsal 500 since joining Triple Eight in 2006. That’s a total of 1207.5-kilometres at the front of the pack - or the equivalent of nearly five Clipsal races from start to finish! Whincup sits above all other drivers with four Clipsal 500 wins, four Clipsal pole positions and seven individual race wins at the event.

hile he may not have won a race at the Clipsal 500 since 2006 and not won the event overall since the first in 1999, Craig Lowndes could create history in Adelaide this weekend. With 89 ATCC/V8SC race wins, he sits one short of record-holder Mark Skaife. One more win will tie Skaife; while two more will give Lowndes the all-time ATCC/V8SC race wins record.

The Bagman says... The rule changes heading into the new season ensure that picking a winner in Adelaide is no easy feat. Despite the category-wide upheaval, Triple Eight Race Engineering - under its new guise as Red Bull Racing Australia - and Ford Performance Racing will more than likely remain the teams to beat. In short, it’s hard to look past the reigning champions. Jamie Whincup has won 50 percent of the races he has contested in Adelaide since joining Eight in 2006, with last year’s Saturday performance perhaps his greatest drive ever. The now four-time V8 Supercars Champion was appeared relatively quiet at Sydney’s pre-season test, although it was worth noting that he ended the day as the highest placed man not to run soft tyres. Team-mate Craig Lowndes could well to

trump Whincup this weekend, although he has not won in Adelaide since 2005. Qualifying, and hence pit position, could be vital in this battle. Like Triple Eight, FPR has enjoyed large amount of track time with its Car of the Future offerings ahead of Adelaide, where a victory for Will Davison or Mark Winterbottom would be no great surprise. This team was far from convincing in Sydney though, indicating their tremendous qualifying speed from 2012 should not be assumed. The Holden Racing Team was also outgunned in Sydney, although James Courtney’s morning pace indicated the team’s potential. Garth Tander has traditionally been very strong in Adelaide with HRT, but whether that form will transfer across to the new generation cars remains to be seen. Either way, anything

less than top fives will be disappointing. Of the rest, Brad Jones Racing are likely to come out of the blocks hard, with both Jason Bright and Fabian Coulthard capable of threatening the big guns. The Tekno Holdens of Shane van Gisbergen and Jonathan Webb are also looking stout, with the Kiwi a particularly exciting prospect in his new Triple Eight-sourced equipment. Getting cars to the finish of the gruelling 250km races will be an achievement for all teams, but especially Nissan Motorsport and Erebus Motorsport. Rick Kelly is probably the best chance of seeing either a Nissan or Mercedes in the top 10 by the chequered flag, although that may rely on the unreliability of others. Qualifying will likely be a struggle for all seven newbies, as it will for the largely untested Dick Johnson Racing Falcons.
