t hardly seems possible but the V8 Supercars season is about to burst back into life on the streets of Adelaide. Over the years the Clipsal 500 has grown into one of the sport’s marquee events, boosted by the overwhelming support from the ever present South Australian crown. In my opinion, there is no better way to start the season. The event has traditionally been run over two 250km races but this year the Clipsal 500 will be split into three races, coupled with the introduction of a twilight race on Saturday evening. Racing in the dusk is a relatively new concept in Australia but it has all the ingredients to produce unpredictable entertainment and a stunning vista for spectators.

www.speedcafe.com

While the event format has changed, much has happened in the off season with drivers and teams formulating their plans for an assault on 2014 title. Arguably the biggest story this weekend is Volvo’s return to top flight Australian motorsport. The Swedish marque has joined forces with Garry Rogers Motorsport as the COTF concept attracts its fifth manufacturer. All eyes will be on Scott McLaughlin and Swedish rookie Robert Dahlgren to see if they can break the Ford/Holden stranglehold. There has been significant driver moves too with Will Davison leaving Ford Performance Racing for Erebus Motorsport. Rookie Chaz Mostert has been promoted to fill the Davison void, while Nick Percat has finally secured the main

game drive his talent deserved. At the front an interesting battle is likely to brew with a number of teams and drivers desperate to knock Triple Eight Engineering and Jamie Whincup off the top spot. On paper the Holden Racing Team seem strong title contenders for the first time in years following their off season recruitment drive. So could this be the year the factory Holden lion roars again? Put all this together and you have a truly unmissable season opener packed full of intrigue, excitement and mystery.

Champs favourites ahead of Clipsal season opener A

new season brings an air of unpredictability but it is hard to ignore Triple Eight Engineering, who will start as favourites for the season opener at Adelaide. Lead driver Jamie Whincup, gunning for record breaking sixth title with the team this year, has accrued more wins than anyone else at Clipsal with seven under his belt. The reigning champion was pipped to the top step of the podium on both occasions this time last year, but few would bet against him this weekend. Despite last year’s results, Ladbrokes.com.au has given Whincup short odds of just $4.00 to win Saturday’s opening gambit. Second favourite is Whincup’s Triple Eight team mate Craig Lowndes rated as a $6.00 chance for the race win. The people’s favourite, who won the opening race of the season at Adelaide last year, will be fired up for the new campaign just losing out on the 2013 championship to Whincup. Following an off season recruitment drive, the Holden Racing Team should be

www.speedcafe.com

given some serious consideration. Drivers James Courtney and Garth Tander showed signs of the team’s rejuvenation last year by recording three race wins between them. With former Triple Eight team principal Adrian Burgess now at the helm, the factory Holden squad will be serious championship contenders. Courtney and Tander have been strong at Adelaide in the past and are rated as $10.00 and $11.00 chances respectively. Arch rivals Ford Performance Racing cannot be ignored on the betting front either. The team shined brightly at times last year, most notably at Bathurst when they broke their duck with Mark Winterbottom. Frosty returns for 2014 with his hunger for a title ever present. Offering short odds of $7.00, the current Bathurst champion is yet to strike gold at Clipsal, so maybe this is his year. Brad Jones Racing made a strong start to the 2013 season and if testing provides any indicators for this year they are set for another fruitful campaign.

Kiwi Fabian Coulthard topped the preseason test at Sydney Motorsport Park earlier this month but mixed weather conditions and the use of different tyre compounds made it difficult to draw any real conclusions. However, he is rated as joint fourth favourite by Ladbrokes at $10.00. Last year’s polesitter and Sunday race winner Shane van Gisbergen joins Courtney and Coulthard as fourth favourite. The Tekno Autosports man is a proven quantity on street circuits highlighted by his win on the Sydney Olympic Park street circuit last time out and impressive showings at Townsville and Gold Coast. The Kiwi is certainly a driver to keep an eye on. As for the newcomers, Volvo could represent the best dark horse offer for the weekend as they make their V8 Supercars debut. Drivers Scott McLaughlin ($51.00) and Swedish rookie Robert Dahlgren ($67.00) ran strongly in the test and may spring a surprise.

FOUR BECOMES FIVE AS VOLVO ENTERS THE 8 Supercars’ Car of the Future regulations continue to bear fruit with Swedish giants Volvo confirming there will be a fiveway manufacturer fight for the 2014 championship. The COTF concept was designed to attract new manufacturers to the sport and after two years and three new marques on the grid, the results speak for themselves. Volvo’s arrival brings added to spice this year’s championship as they pit their S60 V8 Supercars up against the likes of Holden, Ford, Nissan and Mercedes. Working in unison with Garry Rogers Motorsport and Volvo’s performance arm Polestar, the project has quickly gathered momentum throughout 2013, culminating in the stunning S60 that made its track debut at the Sydney test earlier this month. With such a rich motorsport pedigree, highlighted by success in British Touring

V

Cars, Scandinavian Touring Cars and Bathurst, during the super touring era, Volvo are a manufacturer used to winning and won’t rest until they reach the front. Volvo and GRM certainly will have plenty of work to do to topple Holden and Ford but in Scott McLaughlin and Volvo specialist Robert Dahlgren, they have all the tools at their disposal to shine at Clipsal. ”The Clipsal 500 is definitely one of the hardest on the calendar. If we get through this weekend, we can get through anything. We have to be realistic in our goals, we have a big task ahead of us to get going with the development phase. I am very much ready for the weekend,” said McLaughlin.

V8 Supercars Paddock Moves Aside from the arrival of Volvo, there are some notable changes to the 25 car grid from last year.

Erebus Motorsport have scaled back their efforts from running three cars to two with German Maro Engel being squeezed out of the #9 drive in favour of Ford Performance Racing refugee Will Davison. Lee Holdsworth remains with the squad, while Tim Slade has moved to the Holden Racing Team to replace Russell Ingall in the Supercheap Auto backed entry. Rising star Chaz Mostert has been promoted from his role at Dick Johnson Racing to fill the Davison void at FPR, while Jack Perkins is the other new face at FPR as he takes over from Alex Davison in the Jeldwen Falcon. Scott Pye has moved from Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport to DJR along with former Brad Jones Racing driver David Wall. Subsequently, Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport will field a one car entry for Russell Ingall as the veteran continues for another year.

www.speedcafe.com

Races 1/2/3 - Clipsal 500 I Cover Story Dunlop Series champion Dale Wood has stepped up to the main game in the #21 Brad Jones car vacated by Wall. Nick Percat has secured his first full time V8 Supercar seat as he fills the James Rosenberg entry, previously run by Erebus and now at the Holden Racing Team. Tony D’Alberto, Dean Fiore and Alex Premat have been unable to secure drives for 2014.

Title Contenders

Once again Triple Eight Engineering will start the season as favourites with Jamie Whincup targeting a sixth title but the championship fight could be even closer in 2014. The 2013 season saw 17 different race winners as teams and drivers got to grips with the new COTF regulations. On paper perennial rivals Ford Performance Racing will be strong with Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert but they will be joined in the fight by the Holden Racing Team. The factory backed Holden team have recruited ex-Triple Eight team principal Adrian Burgess as part of a restructuring process. Coupled with drivers James Courtney and Garth Tander, either of the pair could challenge for the title. It is not inconceivable that Brad Jones Racing will factor at the sharp end too with Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright following a successful 2013. Tekno Autosport ace Shane van Gisbergen could be another dark horse for the crown.

The Battle of the new marques Last season saw the new manufacturers Erebus AMG and Nissan struggle as they battled to match V8 Supercar stalwarts Ford and Holden. With a year now under their belts and plenty of development work completed, expectations are high for this season. Nissan has developed a new aero package and engine upgrades are expected mid season, which should bring them closer to the front. The team starred in pre-season testing finishing second and third quickest. Erebus Motorsport have taken the engine development in house while the team continues to improve the E63, so expect the three pointed star entries to be much stronger. Now Volvo has joined the fray, the battle among the new manufacturers to join Holden and Ford at the front is truly on.

New Year New Format: Clipsal 500 embraces twilight races V8 Supercars will take a step into the unknown with the Clipsal 500 introducing twilight races as part of the biggest format change in the event’s 15 year history. This year the streets of Adelaide will play host to three V8 Supercar races with Saturday’s traditional 250km encounter being split into two separate 125km twilight battles. The first will be held at 4.20pm with the second beginning at 6.50pm just as the sun sets, providing a picturesque backdrop. Races one and two will contain compulsory pit stops. Introducing twilight racing has been high on V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton’s list of objectives since taking the helm. The move aims to present the sport to prime time audiences on the Channel 7 network. In keeping with Clipsal 500 tradition, there will be individual qualifying sessions to determine the grid for each race. Sunday’s format will remain unchanged with the 25 car field doing battle in a 250km race held in the afternoon. The grid for this will be determined by a 20 minute qualifying session followed by 30 minute Top 10 Shootout all held on Sunday. A minimum in-race 140 litre fuel drop system, which was piloted at the Gold Coast last season, will be used for Sunday’s hit out. Twilight racing is not an entirely new concept for V8 Supercars having raced under lights at Abu Dhabi in 2009 and 2011. The category trialled the twilight concept at the season finale in Sydney last year, but Saturday’s evening race will be V8 Supercars official dusk racing debut. With Clipsal following such a traditional format in the past, the new twilight concept could throw another variable for the drivers to conquer with fading light and cooler temperatures likely to affect both drivers and cars. “The format change adds an element of mystery. We’ve never raced that late into the evening before in Adelaide,” said Nissan Motorsport’s Michael Caruso. “I feel the new format means that qualifying will become even more critical. If you qualify strong for the two Saturday races, it will give you a better chance. And you can’t forget that you’ll need a straight car for Sunday. There’s going to be quite a few factors to watch out for.” The format is perhaps not for the purists but the prospect of potentially unpredictable twilight racing certainly harbors all the ingredients to win over the doubters.

Shortened from its Grand Prix length by 700 metres, the circuit is very busy from inside the cockpit and, apart from the run down the back straight, gives drivers very few opportunities to relax. The circuit featured major resurfacing work for 2009 as well as new pit lane facilities. The Clipsal 500 Adelaide was first held in 1999 (under the name Sensational Adelaide 500),

while the GP-length circuit hosted an American Le Mans Series race on New Years’ Eve in 2000. 2013 Highlight: Craig Lowndes and Shane Van Gisbergen kicked off the COTF era with two impressive victories to open the 2013 season. Event Format: Friday: Practice will comprise three 30 minute practice sessions. These are followed by a two 15 minute qualifying sessions to decide the grid for Saturday’s two 39 lap races. Saturday: There will be a 30-minute practice session in the morning prior to two 39 lap races. One will be held in the afternoon before a twilight 39 lap finale. Sunday: A 20-minute qualifying session followed by a 30 minute Top 10 Shootout determines the grid for the afternoon’s only 250km race of the weekend. Tyre Format: A total of 24 hard compound tyres will be supplied to each entry this weekend. Teams may also bring 8 pre-marked tyres per entry to use in Friday practice. Rookies are eligible to use an extra set of tyres.

Races 1/2/3 - Clipsal 500 I Did You Know

1

Jamie Whincup will begin his push for history at the Clipsal 500 as he aims for an unprecedented sixth Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship crown.

No driver has managed the feat since the ATCC was established in 1960. Whincup is also aiming to become just the second driver to win four championships in a row. The late Ian ‘Pete’ Geoghegan won four straight from 1966 to 1969, though three of these were championship wins decided by a single race.

2

?

?

DID YOU KNOW

Volvo makes its return in Adelaide to the ATCC/ V8 Supercars Championship for the first time since 1986. A Volvo last competed in the championship on July 13, 1986 at the now defunct Oran Park circuit in Sydney, the same year that Kiwi Robbie Francevic won the title driving the turbocharged Volvo 240 Turbo. He remains the oldest man in championship history to be crowned champion at 44 years, 8 months and 25 days.

3 4 5 6 7 8 9

The arrival of Volvo on the grid in 2014 also means that five manufacturers are represented on the grid in the championship for the first time since Round 6 at Eastern Creek in May 1992 when Ford, Nissan, BMW, Holden and a Toyota were all part of the field. For the first time in its history, the Clipsal 500 will be held over three separate races in 2014. The inaugural event in 1999 was deemed one race spread over two days, though from 2000 to 2013 it has been run to a ‘one race per day’ format.

Since 2010 there have been separate qualifying sessions for each race, which will continue this year with three sessions to determine each of the race grids.

Only three drivers have competed in all 15 Clipsal 500s held since the first back in 1999. Craig Lowndes (Red Bull Racing Australia), Garth Tander (Holden Racing Team) and Russell Ingall (Repair Management Australia Racing) have been on the grid for every event.

Of the three, only Ingall is yet to win the Clipsal 500 - he finished runner-up to Jason Bright in 2001.

Pepsi Max Crew star Mark Winterbottom may have broken his Bathurst drought last October, but he’s still yet to do the same on the streets of Adelaide.

The factory Ford driver is yet to claim a race win or a pole position at the Clipsal 500. He qualified second for both races last year and finished second in the Saturday race in 2008 and again on Sunday in 2012.

The average age of the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship grid is 30.8. The oldest driver is Russell Ingall, who turns 50 on February 24 (the Monday of race week) while the youngest driver remains 20-year-old Valvoline Racing GRM pilot Scott McLaughlin.

There are nine drivers in their ‘20s’, 14 in their ‘30s’ and one - Jason Bright - in their ‘40s’.

Three drivers will make their Clipsal 500 debuts this year, though two of those have won Dunlop Series rounds at the circuit before.

Nick Percat (Walkinshaw Racing) won the 2011 round and Chaz Mostert (Pepsi Max Crew) won both the 2012 and 2013 Adelaide Dunlop Series rounds. Swede Robert Dahlgren (Valvoline Racing GRM) will make his V8 Supercars Championship and Clipsal 500 debut on the same weekend.

A handful of drivers are making returns to full-time drives in the V8 Supercars Championship and the Clipsal 500 itself in 2014.

Both Jack Perkins and Dale Wood last competed in the Clipsal 500 back in 2009 as teammates with Kelly Racing though now drive for Team JELD-WEN and Advam Racing respectively after competing in past years in Adelaide in the Dunlop Series. The Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney is also making something of a comeback to racing given he missed the Sydney 500 season finale in 2013 and hasn’t raced since being injured in an accident at Phillip Island last November.

10

The Dunlop Series returns in Adelaide as the main support category with 2002 DVS champion Paul Dumbrell making a return to the class.

He will drive a Triple Eight-built Commodore for Eggleston Motorsport, which was raced last season by Casey Stoner and won Bathurst in 2010 with Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife. Last year’s runner-up Ash Walsh will return, while Kiwi young gun Andre Heimgartner - recently signed to a young driver development deal by Dick Johnson Racing - will drive for reigning champions MW Motorsport. Ford Performance Racing will return to compete in the category for the first time since 2012, running a Falcon for Cameron Waters.

Races 1/2/3 - Clipsal 500 I Porsche Carrera Cup Entry/Preview

Carrera Cup Australia set for bright new era The Carrera Cup Australia’s first season with Porsche’s new Type 991 will get underway with a 23 car grid in Adelaide. Porsche Cars Australia has confirmed the full entry list, which is bigger than that seen at any round last year. As previously reported, the Pro Class is headlined by the return of four-time and reigning champion Craig Baird. Fellow experienced hands Warren Luff, Steven Richards and Michael Patrizi return to the series, as do second year drivers Shae Davies, Duvashen Padayachee and Renee Gracie. Nick Foster is back following a season in Formula 3, while the top category is completed by Foster’s Sonic Motor Racing Services team-mate Nick McBride and GT3 Cup Challenge graduate Michael Almond. The list of 12 Elite (amateur) Class entries

T

that fill out the field includes Australian GT convert Roger Lago. “We’re delighted to come into the 10th season of Carrera Cup with such a strong field,” said PCA motorsport manager Cameron McConville. “Having 23 brand new race cars on the grid at the Clipsal 500 is a huge success for the championship and a fitting way to celebrate this significant milestone. “We also have a tremendous group of teams and drivers who have committed to the season. There are 13 drivers who have returned to the category from last year, while we welcome 10 drivers who are either new to Carrera Cup or return after a previous stint in the series. “The importance of an even mix of Professional Class and Elite Class drivers is again not lost on the championship with a close-to 50/50 split between the two classes.”

Races 1/2/3 - Clipsal 500 I V8 Utes Entry/Preview

38

Miedecke heads capacity Clipsal Ute field Dunlop Series refugee George Miedecke heads a capacity V8 Utes Racing Series entry list for this weekend’s season opener at Adelaide. The championship, set for its 14th year, has attracted a highly competitive 32 car field with reigning champion Ryal Harris back to defend the crown he claimed in the series finale at Sydney in December. Harris will face stiff competition for the championship crown with Miedecke’s V8 Utes return after two years in the Dunlop Series among a whole host of possible title contenders. David Sieders, Nathan Pretty, Kris Walton and Rhys McNally all picked up race wins in 2013 and will be considered contenders for the 2014 title. With a capacity grid expected for the opening battle on the streets of Adelaide, Harris is eager to kick off his campaign on the

front foot. “The past two championship years we haven’t had the best run at Clipsal but I’m hoping it will all change this year,” said Harris. “I’d love to start off the year on podium but it hasn’t deterred me from winning the championship in the past but then again, noone ever likes to lose,” said Harris. Hoping to join the action at the sharp end are Erebus Motorsport. The team will prepare two Utes from its Melbourne base for academy drivers Adam Marjoram and Jesse Dixon with the pair keen to continue their development in the series. Additionally the Clipsal home crowd will have plenty of drivers to get behind with South Australians Craig Dontas, Noel Edge, Graham Stewart and Adrian Cottrell hoping to shine on home turf. Former Aussie Racing Cars champion Cottrell will be making his Ute debut at the event.
