The right questions Much has been written about the future of the Armor All Gold Coast 600 in the last 12 months. Pressure for the Queensland government to reduce spending across the board has seen a cloud of uncertainty cast over both the Gold Coast race and the similarly publicly funded Townsville V8 Supercar event. While the merits of the current international co-driver format and its ability to attract global attention, and hence the desired outcome of increased tourism, is a topic that makes for a fun debate, only detailed economic research can unravel the answer to such a complex question. Judging the event’s success based on the entry list each year is a simple and seemingly popular past time but it’s rather unscientific. All one can sensibly do is enjoy the event while it’s here, and wait for the number crunchers to determine whether or not it really is money well spent. From a sporting point of view, it’s hard to see this weekend’s races unfolding into anything but another epic tussle between TeamVodafone and Ford Performance Racing. The two squads have undoubtedly secured four very strong co-drivers, and with the main drivers qualifying the cars and running the final two thirds of each race, it won’t be easy for any of the other internationals to get much of a look in. The number of sub-plots involved in a weekend like the GC600 is where much of the interest lies however. Which of the 14 rookies can adapt the fastest? Who will be the pick of the swag of IndyCar drivers in the line-up? Will any of the regulars be shown up by their foreign counterparts? What will this event do for the championship equation? They are the sort of questions that race fans should be asking this weekend. The issue of the event’s future can wait for another day.

Will Power: Full focus The Australian IndyCar star on the 2012 season, returning to the Gold Coast and his NASCAR dream
I
n the final three years of the Gold Coast Indy 300 open-wheel race at Surfers Paradise, Will Power was unquestionably the star of the show.
Supercars version of the event in 2010, where a first lap crash on Saturday and a pitstop bungle on Sunday put paid to a promising weekend.
Three pole positions, however, failed to yield a single victory for the laconic Queenslander, marking out the street course as somewhat of a ‘bogey’ venue.
Having been a late withdrawal from the 2011 GC600 following a back injury sustained in the Las Vegas IndyCar accident that claimed the life of Dan Wheldon, Power returns to the Gold Coast with FPR this year to help Mark Winterbottom’s championship quest.
Power’s run of misfortune on the Gold Coast carried over to the reborn V8
After seeing his own IndyCar title hopes fall at the final hurdle for the third year in succession last month, Power told Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus that he is fully focussed on not letting the same happen to the Ford hero’s V8 Supercars assault.

Races 22/23 - Gold Coast I Cover Story
SPEEDCAFE: Will, let’s start with your IndyCar season. You’ve had a few weeks now to reflect on how it all ended in Fontana. What are your thoughts on the year that was? WILL POWER: Well, no matter which way you look at it, you see three big spikes through the season, which were my three DNFs on ovals. Obviously that’s where we lost a massive amount of points. It’s not that we lacked pace on the ovals or qualified bad on them, we just didn’t execute on the day. Obviously I got involved in a couple of accidents with other people, which is the type of thing that sometimes you can’t avoid. But the last one was my mistake, which was very disappointing. There’s no doubt that over the off-season we need to go back and take a real good look at how we can improve on the ovals. When I look at the last few years, I’ve won the road course championship by 100 points and have had it wrapped up before the last race. It’s obvious that I have to have a lot more focus on the ovals. That’s where the effort needs to be. If we’d been as strong on the ovals as we have been the road courses we’d be three-time champions. We can’t make excuses, we’ve just got to study and understand what I need to do to make it work on those tracks. SPEEDCAFE: The challenge of mastering the ovals must at least be keeping you motivated to come back to IndyCar each year... POWER: Yes, in a way I’m enjoying the challenge of mastering the ovals. You’ve got to keep in mind as well that the formula really changed this year so it wasn’t really about building what I’d learnt on in previous years. I had learnt quite a bit in the two years that I’d been full-time racing on ovals, but now the formula has changed and it’s more about the driver and there’s no more pack racing. So everyone had to learn a new car and a new formula of racing on the ovals. The good thing is that I actually enjoy it more the way it is now than what it was. SPEEDCAFE: Looking towards this weekend, the Gold Coast is a place that’s caused you a few heartaches as well.
Winning there in a V8 would be pretty sweet considering how close you came in the Champ Cars and Indy Car?
not about going out and being a hero. The team is fighting for a championship and I need to do a good job for all of those guys. That’s my mindset.
POWER: Oh yeah. I mean, shit, it’s exactly what you say. It’s just funny that you get a track, my home track in this case, where no matter what you can’t get it right there. I had some great pace in the Champ Car and IndyCar there but couldn’t get the trophy.
SPEEDCAFE: You’re obviously aware of where Mark sits in the championship, but how much of an eye have you been able to keep on the team’s progress throughout the season?
I’m definitely with the right team to have a chance to win this weekend, but my objective really is just to do a good a job as I can for Frosty (Mark Winterbottom) and make sure I bring the car back in one piece and in a good position. For me it’s
POWER: I’ve spoken to them a couple of times here and there throughout the year. Obviously we’re pretty busy during our season, but whenever I have had a chance to catch a race I’ve kept an eye on how they’re going.
7
They’ve been really strong this year, which has been no surprise to me. When I raced with them last time they were a really good organisation and the car was very nice to drive. It’ll be interesting to see if the cars feel any different this time around, especially with the soft tyre. SPEEDCAFE: This year again sees a lot of IndyCar drivers in the Gold Coast 600 field. Are there any guys without a big profile in Australia that you think will be able to spring a surprise? POWER: It’ll be interesting to see how some of those guys go and hear what they think of the cars. They’re a very different
driving style, for sure, being such a big heavy car. But it’ll be what it’ll be. They’re all professional drivers and will be going there to do a job for whichever team has brought them over. I’m sure on the whole they’ll do a good job, but it’s very hard to predict how any of the rookies will go. Some will always adapt quicker than others, but we’ll just have to wait and see I think. SPEEDCAFE: Is the Ipswich test an important day for guys like yourself, as well as the rookies? You’ve driven the cars before but it can’t be easy to just jump straight in and be on the pace? POWER: Oh definitely it’s important.
The weather forecast looks good for Wednesday, which is really good news. It’s important for all of us just to do as much mileage as we can so we can understand the limits of the car. There’s obviously a mix of guys in the field, some like myself who need to get used to the cars again after a break, some who have raced the cars before but are now in a different team, and others who are complete rookies. The mix of drivers is what makes it such an interesting event, and just logging laps on Wednesday will be really important. Continued on page 9 >>

SPEEDCAFE: This event is clearly a fun thing to do at the end of the IndyCar season, but would you look at the possibility of running at Bathurst again, and even potentially racing V8s full-time once you’re finished with open-wheels? POWER: They’re all options to be honest. There’s no doubt that I’d love to run Bathurst again (Power raced in the 2002 Bathurst 1000 alongside Mark Larkham). Obviously it depends on what happens in my career as to what opportunities I’ll have. These days I’m living in North Carolina which is the home of NASCAR. I’d definitely like to at some point give that a go, starting out maybe in Late Model cars and just see how I run. That definitely interests me, but at the moment I’m just focussing on what I’ve got going on here with the IndyCar side of things. SPEEDCAFE: Is a NASCAR switch something you’ve ever spoken about with Roger (Penske)? POWER: No, I haven’t actually pursued it or anything like that at this point. It’s just that it’s really in your face when you live in North Carolina. It’s everywhere. All the teams are there, and obviously my team has got a NASCAR team as well. They (Penske’s NASCAR team) are actually leading the championship right now, so it’d be an obvious thing to give a go at some point in the future.

Races 22/23 - Gold Coast I Circuit Info
Surfers Paradise Street Circuit Circuit Overview Location: Gold Coast, Queensland Length: 2.98 kilometres Direction: Anti-Clockwise Maximum speed: 265km/h Fastest Point: Pit Straight Average Speed: 146km/h Circuit Description The famous Surfers Paradise Street Circuit was modified for the first running of the internationally-flavoured Armor All Gold Coast 600 event in 2010. Reduced from 4.7km to 2.96km, the revised layout shortened construction time and reduced disruption to the local traffic and residents, in addition to allowing spectators to see the cars pass by more frequently. The previous version of the circuit hosted CART/Champ Car races between 1991 and 2007 under various names, before the series eventually folded. A post-season, non-championship, IndyCar event was then held in 2008 - an arrangement that the category elected not to continue. A plan to bring the struggling A1 Grand Prix Series to the Gold Coast did not come off in 2009, leaving the V8 Supercars as the main act. V8 Supercars Practice/Qualifying Lap Record: Jamie Whincup, Holden Commodore VE II, 1m10.9615s, 2011
V8 Supercars Race Lap Record: Will Davison, Ford Falcon FG, 1m10.0851s, 2011 Note: This was achieved in the Sunday race after the corner bollards were removed and shortcut sensors turned off. Event Format: Wednesday International co-driver test day (Queensland Raceway) Friday: Practice: 2 x 40 min (all drivers) 2 x 40 min (co-drivers only) Saturday: Qualifying: 1 x 30 min Top 10 Shootout Race: 1 x 300km (102 laps) Sunday: Qualifying: 1 x 30 min Race: 1 x 300km (102 laps) Tyre Format: Only the soft compound Dunlop control tyre will be seen this weekend, with each entry receiving 10 new sets. An additional two sets of pre-marked soft or hard tyres can be brought for practice.

K
erbs are always a big talking point on the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit and the introduction and failure of the electronic sensor system last year meant that the issue got pretty extreme. This year they’ve revised the system again, so we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out. Essentially the electronic loops will be in the same places as last year, in Turns 2, 7, 8, 9 and 10, but the ‘line of sight’ bollards have been moved further inward, with large ‘inner kerbs’ now installed to deter the cutting. We can only hope that the loops themselves are not as sensitive as the one in New Zealand, which seemed to be reasonably random in the way that it went off, and that the inner ‘humps’ are glued down a bit better than what we saw at Sandown (the Turn 12 exit humps that were removed early in first practice). It’s a good thing that we have a reasonable amount of leeway with five breeches before a penalty, and the number of breeches being reset on Laps 2, 34 and 68 (of 103). There is an appeal system as well if you feel that you’ve been hard done by, but the penalty for being wrong is so harsh (50 points removed from both drivers’ championship tallies) that I don’t think you’ll see many people trying their luck with that! Really we’re just going to have to see how it all works when we get there. How you police it is what’s important, not how it all works theoretically.
Strategy The strategy here is relatively straight forward. A couple of guys tried other things last year, but I’d expect to see at least 26 of the 28 cars start with their co-drivers onboard and pluck them out after they’ve completed their minimum of 34 laps. The only thing like an alternate strategy that we might see is, if there’s a Safety Car during that first stint, some might make an additional stop just to top up their fuel, keeping their co-driver onboard. That’d give you fuel-in-hand when the first proper stops start, and gives you more of an opportunity to get yourself out of the pitlane congestion. There’s obviously a lot of factors you have to consider before doing something like that, but if you have a quick enough co-driver you could make it work. You’d need to be pretty confident in your driver change speed to attempt it though. There’s no point having your fuel done quicker if the incoming driver is still being strapped in.

TECH PREVIEW with
CAMPBELL LITTLE
Tyres We’ve got 36 tyres to play with this year, which is down from 40 last year, but a bit of common sense has prevailed in that we now have to give back a set before qualifying. It was my argument to them that if we’ve got to do four, 40 minute sessions on Friday with only eight used tyres, we’re not really showcasing our cars very well to these international drivers. Most of us have got nothing left in terms of pre-marked softs. The shelf life of them isn’t that great, so it’s hard to have good ones up your sleeve. It makes no sense to be sliding around on rubbish tyres or just sitting in the garage when the guys have to learn the cars and the track. The set that has to be given back can be run at the Queensland Raceway test on Wednesday as well. I think we’ll see a few teams use those tyres to give their drivers an early feel of what good rubber is really like, but we’ll wait and see what people decide to do. Once you get onto your race allocation during the weekend, if you flat spot one you’re still in a bit of trouble. In a perfect world we’ll only use three sets in each race, but it doesn’t always pan out that way.
Tyre, and brake, wear is going to be more of an issue than last year if the kerb policing works as intended. Last year on Sunday the cars were very, very quick after they turned those kerb sensors off. The guys were straight-lining the chicane through Turns 7, 8, 9 and 10 and were 40km/h faster on the exit of that chicane than in qualifying. Basically they weren’t turning the corners, giving you less tyre wear, less brake wear and so on. All of those things are going to come back into play this year. Surface Surfers Paradise is one of those real patchwork quilt type of tracks, so we’ll see what’s new and what isn’t once we do our track walk. Last year they had done a fair bit of work on the track with different bitumens in some of the corners. We had some break up at Turns 11 and 12, and also in the Turn 4 hairpin, but not significant amounts. They’ve done a bit of resurfacing since last year again, particularly in the back chicane, so we’ll see what it’s like.

ack Daniel’s Racing’s Rick Kelly will chalk up his 150th ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship event start on the Gold Coast - while brother Todd will miss his first V8SC event since 2000. Two-time Bathurst winner Rick becomes just the 18th driver in ATCC/V8SC history to reach the ‘150’ milestone - he and brother Todd also become the first pair of brothers in the ‘150’ club. Rick’s last race win came at Sandown in November 2011 with his best finish this year a fifth place in the Saturday race in Hamilton, New Zealand. He will be joined by IndyCar ace Graham Rahal this weekend, who competed on the Gold Coast in the Champ Car race in 2007 and in IndyCar in 2008. Meanwhile, shoulder surgery has sidelined Rick’s brother Todd, who will miss his first V8 Supercars

TeamVodafone enters the Gold Coast event as overwhelming favourites to take both race wins. Victory at Bathurst two weeks ago has this squad on a 10 race streak, and a co-driver line-up of Bourdais and Lyons only makes the team more formidable. Bourdais (with Whincup) and Lyons (with Winterbottom) each won a leg of the GC600 last year. The former is returning for his third GC600 and is arguably the very best co-driver out there. Lyons meanwhile made one mistake in traffic on Saturday last year but is unlikely to repeat such a faux pas.

As is usually the case, expect car #2 to be the pick of this lot. Tander has managed to extract top six speed out of his HRT Commodore on each of the Gold Coast-style street tracks visited so far this year (Adelaide, Hamilton and Townsville), while Briscoe’s previous runs at Sandown, Bathurst and the GC ensure he’s one of the most experienced co-drivers. Beating T8 and FPR will be difficult, although a podium appears a strong possibility. Turner impressed here last year after his late call-up and should help Courtney towards a top 10, while Dumbreck may struggle if Ingall’s qualifying form leaves him starting back in the pack.

After 21 races, Holdsworth is still looking for his first podium finish with SBR, and this could be the weekend where he gets it done. His co-driver Pagenaud took quite a liking to the V8 Supercars at the GC600 last year, scoring a top three finish alongside Holdsworth at GRM. He should again be among the quickest this year. Bleekemolen is rather more of an unknown, but as he spends the majority of each year jumping between categories around the world, he should adapt to these cars quicker than most, leaving car #9 as a reasonable top 10 chance. Car #47 can also finish strongly, but only if Brabham can keep the pace.

This team will be desperate to avenge its Bathurst disaster after again proving fast but ultimately failing to deliver on the Mountain. Davison and Salo were a formidable combination last year and should again challenge for the wins. While the Finn no longer races full-time, this year will mark his third GC600 appearance. Power meanwhile returns to FPR after a one year absence and will be relied upon to keep Winterbottom’s title hopes alive in another potentially winning entry. Heidfeld is the biggest unknown here, but will be eyeing a top five on debut as he teams with Bathurst star Reynolds.

Although Andretti and Rahal are two of the biggest names to be joining the Gold Coast field this year, a line-up of four V8 Supercars rookies in a team that has struggled so far this year hardly inspires confidence. Top 10 finishes have been few and far between for Kelly Racing this year and Bathurst was no exception. Losing Todd Kelly to a shoulder injury further hurts the team’s chances as Tim Blanchard prepares to make the difficult leap into the role of primary driver. As for the internationals, look for the ‘Kelly Racing’ side of the garage to have the wood on the ‘Jack Daniel’s Racing’ entries this weekend.

The Bright/Sarrazin/BJR entry is one of just six driver/co-driver/ team combinations to remain in place from 2011, and should help car #8’s chances this weekend. A top 10 is certainly be possible if both can stay out of trouble. Minnasian and Campbell-Walter are both V8 Supercar and Gold Coast rookies however, and face a difficult task in the two races. Dick Johnson Racing is another team where the co-drivers will face a tough task to shine in what have not proven to be top 10 cars throughout the season. DJR has selected an experienced line-up of internationals, with 43-year-old Papis the youngest of the quartet. This year marks Morbidelli’s third appearance at the GC600 alongside Fiore, while Said returns to partner Owen for a second consecutive occasion. It’s hard to know what to expect from Kox, who like Papis is a V8 Supercar rookie. Webb and Lieb could well be the surprise packets this weekend. The Tekno Autosports owner/driver heads to the Gold Coast off the back of top 10 finishes in both the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000, while the German returns for his second taste of V8 Supercar action having performed strongly in the #4 Irwin SBR Falcon last year. Encouragingly, Webb has qualified in the top dozen for each of the last five races. Repeating that performance will be crucial if the team is to finish among the front-runners here. Di Grassi meanwhile is a strong talent but lacks tin-top experience. The second Tekno car was off the pace at both Sandown and Bathurst, leaving expectations modest.

This line-up has been given a pre-event shake-up with Alexandre Premat rested in favour of Greg Ritter. The Australian again proved to be one of the stronger co-drivers at Sandown and Bathurst, but will face a very tough task to be faster than any of the full-time drivers in qualifying. Ritter’s co-driver Taylor is arguably the least high-profile off all on the entry, and has little experience outside of Grand-Am. The Caruso/Hinchcliffe entry should be very much the stronger of the two, and may well be fighting in among the top 10 on both days.

Mike Conway is another IndyCar driver with a strong openwheel background that’ll be making his V8 Supercar debut on the Gold Coast this year. Likely to start in the bottom 10 on the basis of Douglas’ qualifying performances so far this year, the key for the Briton will be to keep his nose clean and hand the car back to Douglas in one piece.
