Mixed challenge in Darwin This weekend’s Skycity Triple Crown at Hidden Valley marks the first event of the year in which teams will be required to use both compounds of Dunlop control tyre in the same race.

Hidden valley EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus

Saturday’s 60/60 Super Sprint will be run solely on the hards, while softs can be used in the Sunday qualifying sessions and must be used in each of the two 100km Sunday races. How to best utilise the tyre bank over the course of a weekend has been a major talking point all year thanks to the late slashing of the allocations in the name of cost reduction. Last time out in Austin we saw the laughable spectacle of cars howling around a dry track on wets during practice in order save tyres for the rest of the weekend. Thankfully, the return of pre-marked tyres for practice in Darwin should at least put that out of the equation.

ART DIRECTOR: Steven Neumann

Regardless, Hidden Valley poses similar challenges to Barbagallo in terms of high degradation; increasing the scope for seeing greater variations in strategy.

DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes

Starting on the hard or the soft are both genuine options here. Last year’s 120km Saturday race saw 11 start on the softs, with the likes of FPR, HRT and BJR all prepared to take the gamble.

SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson PARTNERS: Armor All Castrol Edge Coates Hire Crimsafe Dunlop Finance Ezi IRWIN OzSpeedShop Pirtek Proton

In truth, either strategy can be destroyed by a Safety Car, depending on when it falls, which is a particularly pertinent point considering the frequency of full course yellows here over recent years. In 2013 the teams have the added issue of not being able to make a quick rollcentre tweak in the pitstops thanks to the move from the venerable live axle to the independent rear end with the Car of the Future. Although this has obviously also been the case during the pitstop races so far this year in Adelaide, Albert Park and Barbagallo - having to pre-set the car’s roll-centres to deal with two tyre compounds without the safety net of the mid-race change mechanism is a new challenge. Triple Eight was sublime in Darwin last year, taking a double victory through Jamie Whincup (Saturday) and Craig Lowndes (Sunday). Those performances broke a seven race winning streak from FPR and kicked off an 11 race unbroken run for Triple Eight. With Whincup having won five of the last six races heading into Hidden Valley in 2013, another sweep from Triple Eight this weekend would be a major blow to the opposition.

In the hunt

Will Davison has kept his title hopes afloat during a difficult start to 2013

I

t’s been and up and down season so far for Ford Performance Racing’s Will Davison.

The 30-year-old sits third in points heading into Hidden Valley. Lacking the outright pace of the front-runners, particularly in qualifying, Davison has won just one of the first 16 races - a stark contrast to 2012, where he took six of the first 11. Aside from a puncture in the opening race at Barbagallo, consistency had been the hallmark of Davison’s 2013 season prior to a difficult weekend last time out in Austin. Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to the 2009 Bathurst 1000 winner about his quest for a maiden championship title. SPEEDCAFE: Will, from the outside it’s been hard to know what to make of your season so far. How have you seen it? WILL DAVISON: It’s been a little disappointing to be honest, so where I am

www.speedcafe.com

in the points (third) is probably all in all not a bad position to be.

and the two Brad Jones Racing cars? Or is it too early to be calling that?

We’ve certainly not been fast enough. Comparing to last year we haven’t been quite competitive enough, but we’ve been able to keep in there and keep ourselves in the hunt.

DAVISON: Well, we’ve obviously seen that all the Triple Eight cars and the BJR cars, which have Triple Eight parts, have been the most competitive cars at the start of the season.

We’ve had to dig out of a hole on a few occasions when we’ve been in bad shape in practice but still dig deep and score some really good points.

Triple Eight definitely took it up a notch in Austin, but we’ve kept ourselves in there and on paper I’m well and truly in the hunt.

Our proud platinum partners

It certainly hasn’t been coming that easy. Everyone has had to work hard on their cars this year, but there seems to have been some cars and teams that have rolled out a bit quicker than us. We’ve made progress but the process of getting speed out of it certainly hasn’t ended. We’re working hard on understanding and getting on top of the problems we have. SPEEDCAFE: Do you see the championship as a battle between five now with yourself, the two Red Bull cars

I think it’s pretty clear that we’ve got a lot more room for improvement than those guys. They’re going to talk up the fact that they’re going to get better and better but realistically their starting platform has been higher than ours. I’m very confident that we’ve got more room for improvement then them and we’re only going to get stronger as the year goes on. Just because the last round or two looks like it’s status quo from last year (with Triple Eight winning), I don’t think that’s going to be the case. The Triple Eight guys are still going to have days that aren’t as good as others and we’re still going to see other players in there. FPR and HRT are still going to have their days in the sun, and Tekno and BJR have stepped it up a level this year. There are still a lot of cars in there at any given day, I don’t think we’ll see anyone run away with it. SPEEDCAFE: Was Austin a big blow for you? DAVISON: I was certainly disappointed with Austin, going in there just behind Whincup in second to be now 200 points behind in third. I was really angry with myself for the mistake I made in the last race (colliding with Scott McLaughlin), but when things like that happen I only knuckle down harder than ever.

DAVISON: Yes, sometimes you have a frustrating weekend racing and then when you have a week off, you reflect on things and become super excited to come home and get stuck into it. I can see that a lot of the boys feel the same way. Everyone left Austin a little dejected, went their own way and now have come back with a fantastic vibe. You can see that everyone is really keen to go racing and now bounce back. It’s not just a matter of working hard, everybody does that, but you’ve got to work smart, and we’ve got a lot of smart people here. SPEEDCAFE: Lastly, you tested at Winton in the lead-up to Darwin. How did it go? DAVISON: I think it was a really good test. You never get carried away with testing but track conditions were perfect and the car felt good all day. We made a lot of positive changes and I really enjoyed the car which is always a good sign. We tried some very interesting things on the car and they were quite promising so it was good to get such a positive response. I am really excited to continue working with those new developments for the next few races so I can’t wait to get to Darwin.

It definitely hurt, but there’s no doubt that the year is still going to be up and down for most people. We’ve got to make sure that the next few rounds for me are really solid.

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

I think the enduros are really going to play a big part in this year and I’m feeling really very good about those races with Steve Owen on board. ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

I’m going to make sure I use those three races to my advantage this year whereas last year they were my Achilles Heel. SPEEDCAFE: Everyone talks about going home and working hard after bad weekends, but was it good to get away for a bit of a holiday after Austin? FPR certainly had a large representation at the Indy 500...

DID YOU

KNOW

?

S

upercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall won the inaugural V8 Supercar event at Hidden Valley back in 1998, so it’s perhaps appropriate he racks up an important career milestone in Darwin. Ingall will start his 225th Australian Touring Car Championship/ V8 Supercars Championship event in the Northern Territory, drawing him level with Hall of Famer John Bowe for the record of most starts in ATCC/V8SC history. The 2005 V8 Supercar champion, Ingall has competed in a total of 521 races across 224 events, claiming 27 race wins, 38 podiums and a single pole position. Ingall is one of three drivers - along with Garth Tander and Craig Lowndes - to have competed in every Hidden Valley event. Bowe will be present in Darwin to see Ingall equal his record. The 1995 Australian Touring Car Champion will be competing in the Touring Car Masters category in his Ford Mustang.

T

he likelihood of the Pedders STP Chrysler Safety Car making an appearance at Hidden Valley has soared in recent years.

46.3% of all V8 Supercars Championship races in Darwin since 1998 have seen the Safety Car on-track at some stage. However, since 2007, Safety Cars have appeared in 71.4% of V8 Supercar races at Hidden Valley - a marked increase.

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

F

Since 2001 there has only been one event - 2010 - where the Safety Car was not called upon in any of the races over the weekend.

ord has dominated Hidden Valley qualifying in recent years with Falcon drivers claiming the last six pole positions straight since 2010.

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

Of those, Ford Performance Racing has taken five (three to Mark Winterbottom and two to Will Davison), but only been able to convert those five poles into just one race win (Winterbottom, Saturday 2010). The other Ford pole position was taken by Alex Davison, who claimed his first - and so far only - V8 Supercar pole in Darwin on Sunday in 2010 for Stone Brothers Racing. Davison is now part of the four-car line-up run by FPR driving the #18 Jeld-Wen FPR Falcon.

D

roughts are bad news for farmers and they are just as bad for V8 Supercar teams that have gone without a win for a while.

At present, the longest drought for a team in the championship (that has previously won a race) sits with Dick Johnson Racing - 75 races have come and gone since their last race win at Sydney in 2010 with Jonathon Webb (who ran the team’s third car that season). There have been 62 races since Erebus Motorsport V8 - formerly known as Stone Brothers Racing - took victory (the last in Darwin in 2011 with Shane van Gisbergen), while the Holden Racing Team is winless over the last 54 championship races since Bathurst 2011.

T

he most evenly matched team has been the Holden Racing Team with Garth Tander and James Courtney 8-8 so far. Their Walkinshaw Racing stable mate Russell Ingall has out-qualified the ‘red’ pair on just one occasion this year.

B

eating your teammate is the first task of any V8 Supercar driver and the head-to-head qualifying numbers in 2013 show that, generally, it’s a lop-sided fight so far in most teams. The biggest ‘win’ so far has been Jamie Whincup over Craig Lowndes - 13-3 in the champion’s favour. Fabian Coulthard has dominated BJR teammates Jason Bright and David Wall (11-5-0), while Mark Winterbottom is on top of Will Davison at the Pepsi Max Crew in qualifying (12-4), despite trailing his teammate by five positions and 143 points in the actual championship. Winterbottom is the only driver that has out-qualified his teammate overall this year over 16 races but sits behind him in the championship pointscore. Scott McLaughlin has the upper-hand at Fujitsu Racing

www.speedcafe.com

GRM over Alex Premat (10-6), while Shane van Gisbergen has out-paced Tekno Autosports teammate Jonathon Webb to the score of 11-5. Rick Kelly has dominated brother Todd 11-5 while Norton Nissan pilot James Moffat has the same stat against his stable mate Michael Caruso. However across all four Nissan Motorsport pilots, Rick leads the way 7-5-3-1 over Moffat, Todd and Caruso. Lee Holdsworth has been the ‘form’ qualifier at Erebus Motorsport V8 (11-3-2 against Tim Slade and Maro Engel), while Chaz Mostert’s arrival of Dick Johnson Racing has blown Tim Blanchard away given the new comer has out-qualified the latter for all seven races so far as teammates. Scott Pye leads Dean Fiore 7-5 at Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport given Pye missed the Pukekohe event.

6. The soft Dunlop tyre and the 60/60 Super Sprint format will make a return to the V8 Supercars Championship in Darwin after neither was used in the last event in Austin, Texas. Each driver will have eight soft and 12 hard Dunlop tyres to use across qualifying and the three races at Hidden Valley. Drivers will only be permitted to use the hard tyre for the 60/60 Super Sprint on Saturday (Race 17 of the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship), which will be made up of two halves each of 21 laps. Drivers will have to use both soft and hard tyres in Race 18 on Sunday and then again in Race 19 later that afternoon. Each Sunday race will be 35 laps in duration.

The Bagman says...

I

f anyone was doubting it following Barbagallo, Austin showed that Triple Eight is once again in dominant form. Jamie Whincup should be the firm favourite for Hidden Valley. He’s won five of the last six races in the 2013 championship and scored four of the last five pole positions. His qualifying has been outstanding all season; entering Hidden Valley with an average of starting position of 2.1. Only twice has Whincup started outside the top three in the 16 races held so far. Whincup and team-mate Craig Lowndes shared the wins at Hidden Valley last year,

while Barbagallo proved their 2013generation cars have the tyre life to match the very best. As has been the case for much of the season FPR and BJR should be Triple Eight’s strongest competition this weekend. FPR joined fellow factory team HRT in testing at Winton since Austin, which could help see both teams take the next step. BJR elected not to test, with Jason Bright travelling to Darwin via Le Mans, where he has been testing the Ferrari he will race in the 24 Hours the week after Hidden Valley. Bright was at sea with set-up for much of the Austin weekend but team-mate Fabian

Coulthard was as strong as ever and will undoubtedly contend again here. Of the rest, Shane van Gisbergen continues to threaten the top runners inside the top 10 and has happy memories of Hidden Valley following his win here in 2011. The Nissans and Mercedes will all struggle down the long main straight, but the former’s cars should prove competitive enough in the corners to be fighting for the top 10 scraps regardless. They’ll all be chasing Triple Eight, though, who appear as strong as ever just five events into the category’s ‘new era’.

The Castrol Locator app is the easy to use tool that connects you to Castrol. The app is split into two sections: FOR YOUR TRUCK and FOR YOUR CAR. You can search for the outlet nearest your current location, or in any specific suburb or area you nominate. You can view your info on a list, and get directions or choose the map option. It couldn’t be easier.

GET THE APP NOW AND GO DIRECTLY TO CASTROL

WHICH OIL? The app contains a direct link to the Castrol lube selection guide so you’ll never be left wondering whether you’ve made the right choice for your vehicle.
