The pace race Following a packed start to the V8 Supercars Championship schedule that saw most teams flat-out simply turning their cars around between events, the season is now well and truly into its second phase.

ipswich EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus ART DIRECTOR: Steven Neumann DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson PARTNERS: Armor All Castrol Edge Coates Hire Crimsafe Dunlop Finance Ezi IRWIN OzSpeedShop Pirtek Proton

The development race is on in earnest between the championship’s biggest players, who have started making a serious dent into their respective testing allocations. The first three months of the championship saw the teams take in six race meetings. By contrast, the next set of six meetings stretches over five months, leaving far more prospect for private development running. Interestingly, Ford Performance Racing and the Holden Racing Team were the only two teams to test between Hidden Valley and Townsville, and found themselves scoring one-two finishes in the respective Far North races. While the cause and effect relationship of testing and trophies is obviously not quite that simple, the wholesale off-season regulation change ensures that there’s still plenty of considerable gains to be made right now. Jamie Whincup, for example, estimated that his new car had been developed to 60 percent of its potential ahead of the season-opener in Adelaide. Heading to Queensland Raceway, he believes the base package is still only about 80 percent of the way there. FPR has been back to Winton following Townsville, where they were joined by early season pace-setters Brad Jones Racing which, remarkably, had not run a private test at all since the season began. Red Bull Racing Australia, which had a shocker in Townsville, ran their first private test in months last week alongside Erebus, Tekno and Dick Johnson Racing. What can be learned around one test track, though, is not the full picture, and much exploring is still needed to be done across the race weekends. The new cars, it seems, have a much larger set-up window than the old ones, with greater variations in key settings needed to be fast from one track to another. The actual target for any given race track, though, is said to be smaller than previously thanks to the more precise 18-inch tyre. With the field so close, it’s easier than ever for the big players to be greatly embarrassed. Let’s see who gets it right this weekend.

Poised to pounce

Craig Lowndes is well placed at the halfway mark of the 2013 season

T

he Coates Hire Ipswich 360 may not be the most prestigious event on the V8 Supercars calendar, but it pays the same points as any other. Over the past two years, Craig Lowndes has made the most of the simple six-turn layout to take an impressive five consecutive race wins. The 39-year-old returns to his Red Bull Racing Australia outfit’s test track this year running second in the championship. Although not having an altogether smooth run over the first 21 races, Lowndes is currently closer to team-mate and points leader Jamie Whincup at this point of the season than he has ever been since the current points system was introduced in 2008.

explain why you’ve been so successful here recently? CRAIG LOWNDES: It’s a circuit that looks basic, because it’s only six corners, but there are some areas where you need to really focus on getting the car right. You need to look after the tyres here and we’re lucky enough that, as locals, we use it as a test track and understand the weather patterns and how the track trends over a day.

Next weekend we’ll arrive confident that we’ll do well, but you’ve got to qualifying well. That’s really been the secret to my good results here recently.

Our proud platinum partners

That’s our strength, but the other side of is that the southern teams, particularly HRT and FPR, come up here and they always do well. If it’s not ourselves winning it’s generally them. It’s our test track, but there’s no guarantees that it’ll always work in your favour.

Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to Lowndes about his year and the prospect of a long awaited fourth title.

SPEEDCAFE: Is a home track any more of an advantage this year because there’s no previous year’s data with the Car of the Future for the Victorian teams to look at?

SPEEDCAFE: Craig, you’ve been the ‘King of QR’ in the last couple of years. It’s not quite the same accolade as ‘King of the Mountain’, but is there any way you can

LOWNDES: Yeah, I think so. For us it’ll give us a head start on the southern teams. But there are a lot of quick Queensland teams as well which have the same testing as us.

www.speedcafe.com

For me I like the Car of the Future, it suits my style in the sense that you can flow it, trail brake and carry more mid-corner speed than with the previous car. All that works well for the drivers like myself who have had open-wheeler experience.

SPEEDCAFE: So other than the enjoyment of a car with a more open-wheel-type of feel, has it been rejuvenating for you to be playing with a new car? You were in the old cars for basically their whole life cycle. LOWNDES: Absolutely. It’s always nice to have a new fresh start and for me, I enjoy the development side of it. The recent test we had here was a great example of that because we had a few things we wanted to try; shocks, springs, roll-centres, rideheights, all that type of stuff. There was so much that we knew about the old car, we really had most of it locked away and knew what worked at nearly every track. But this car, like Townsville a couple of weeks ago, we struggled. We’re still looking for different combinations of car set-up that work for us. I think this car is more technically advanced and it needs more massaging when it comes to race weekends. SPEEDCAFE: We’ve seen a lot of shorter races this year. How have you found the formats? LOWNDES: I’m more of a fan of the longer distance races. I enjoyed Townsville; to have 200km races for me was better. We qualified poorly but were still able to get back for a result. Qualifying has never been my strong point, but I’m often able to get back into a podium position as a longer race unfolds. I’m really looking forward to Sandown and Bathurst, because they’re races you can really get your teeth into. SPEEDCAFE: Qualifying certainly wasn’t a strength Townsville, but it clearly wasn’t just you struggling. Was it as big a surprise to the team as it was to those on the outside?

look at the way we operate on those kind of circuits. SPEEDCAFE: Are you happy then to be sitting second in points considering it hasn’t been all smooth sailing? LOWNDES: You’ve always got to be happy when you’re in the top three in the championship. Even on a bad weekend in Townsville, we managed to close the gap to Jamie, which ultimately was great. I wouldn’t say I’m completely satisfied, but I’m happy where we are because we have had our ups and downs. Tasmania was a huge disappointment for me. We lost a lot of points on the Saturday purely through the way they structured that 60/60. They changed the rules after that but it hurt me a lot. At the moment it’s hard to peg points back and we’ve been playing catch-up since then. But we’re getting closer.

sreLOWNDES: ntrapI think muso.nGenerally italp we duorp ruO qualifying inside the top 10. I was only a thousandths off on Saturday, mainly because I just didn’t get a lap together, but in saying that the car wasn’t fast enough for pole position. ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

The Car of the Future has given everyone an equal chance of winning races and we’ve been a bit hit and miss. Darwin was good, Texas was fantastic, Perth was even better for me… but Townsville we were outside the top 10. It’s just one of those things. We’re still learning, developing and understanding the car. Townsville was the second street circuit we’ve gone to, so maybe we just need to

SPEEDCAFE: Is there anything you need to be focussing on or doing differently to previous years in order to beat Jamie to this championship? LOWNDES: We just need to focus on our own thing and make sure we qualify better than we have done. Normally from the halfway point, which is where we are now, we generally get stronger. I’m really looking forward to the back half of the season and hopefully, as we’ve done in the last couple of years, we’ll be able to get some momentum started and put a bit of pressure on come Homebush.

T

he 60/60 Super Sprint format returns at Queensland Raceway with the Saturday race to be held over a pair of 20 lap halves.

So far there have been three 60/60 races in 2013 and the wins have been shared between Fabian Coulthard (Symmons Plains), Craig Lowndes (Barbagallo) and Jamie Whincup (Hidden Valley). However, no driver that has led at ‘half time’ has been able to go on and win the race. Whincup led at half time at both Symmons Plains and Barbagallo, while David Reynolds led into the break at Hidden Valley.

T

he Holden Racing Team broke a winning drought of 58 races in Townsville with a 1-2 finish for Garth Tander and James Courtney, but now they will have to overcome some woeful recent form at Queensland Raceway. Both drivers have failed to qualify in the top 10 at QR for the past two years - Tander’s average qualifying position is 20.25 and Courtney’s is 20.5. Of the five races held at QR in 2011 and 2012, only Tander has been able to manage a top 10 race finish for HRT - a sixth place on Sunday in 2011.

argely unheralded after the Sucrogen Townsville 400 was the fact that Pepsi Max Crew FPR driver Mark Winterbottom scored more points than any other driver in North Queensland.

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

It was the first time this season that a Falcon driver has scored the most points at a V8 Supercars Championship event. Winterbottom finished second in both races at Queensland Raceway last year, though is winless at the Ipswich circuit since claiming two victories in 2008.

ick Johnson Racing’s Chaz Mostert has impressed in his debut year in the V8 Supercars Championship.

Since debuting at Barbagallo in May, Mostert has scored the 12th-most points of any driver in the championship over the period - more than the likes of Scott McLaughlin, Rick Kelly, James Moffat and Alex Davison. Mostert has also out-qualified teammate Tim Blanchard 12-0 head-to-head with a best race finish of seventh at Hidden Valley and a best qualifying performance of 10th in Perth.

The Bagman says...

F

ollowing the many variables of Townsville’s 200km races, this weekend sees a return to the 60/60 Super Sprint format and, with it, a major emphasis on qualifying. Jamie Whincup and Red Bull Racing Australia had been the season’s undoubted qualifying kings until their Townsville disaster in which the four-time champion failed to make the top half of the field for either race. Townsville however is a very different circuit to Queensland Raceway, and with the tyre compound used for qualifying also being different (hards in Townsville and softs at QR), don’t expect anything less than a pace-setting performance from RBRA this time around. Recent form at this venue does suggest however that Craig Lowndes should be

considered a safer bet than his team-mate this weekend. His run of five straight wins here is well documented and can, in part, be put down to his affinity with the soft tyre. Of the rest, Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom pushed Lowndes hard here last year despite not testing at the Ipswich venue. Will Davison has put the majority of runs on the board for FPR over the opening half of the campaign, but the raw qualifying pace of Winterbottom arguably makes him the one to watch. FPR’s third-stringer, David Reynolds, has also shown flashes of brilliant speed of late, but his qualifying performances have been highly erratic. Nothing can be assumed about his form this weekend. The Queensland meeting will mark a

major test for the Holden Racing Team, which shot back to prominence with a strategy-assisted win in Townsville. The squad has undoubtedly made gains with its cars over recent events, but has struggled badly at Ipswich in recent years. Of the rest, Tekno duo Shane van Gisbergen and Jonathon Webb will be hoping for big results on their home circuit, but one must remember that the former’s three poles this year have all come on street circuits while using the hard tyre. The Nissan and Erebus AMG entries meanwhile have had their troubles over recent races, but will benefit from the return to sprint racing. Both have the potential to have their leading cars in the top 10, with Rick Kelly and Tim Slade likely to be the respective pace-setters for each team.

The Castrol Locator app is the easy to use tool that connects you to Castrol. The app is split into two sections: FOR YOUR TRUCK and FOR YOUR CAR. You can search for the outlet nearest your current location, or in any specific suburb or area you nominate. You can view your info on a list, and get directions or choose the map option. It couldn’t be easier.

GET THE APP NOW AND GO DIRECTLY TO CASTROL

WHICH OIL? The app contains a direct link to the Castrol lube selection guide so you’ll never be left wondering whether you’ve made the right choice for your vehicle.
