Unearthing stars at the paper clip
T
he record book suggests the established stars Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander have won the most V8 Supercars races at the Queensland Raceway circuit. Since the circuit opened in 1999, Lowndes has posted 11 wins while Tander has hauled in five victories at the ‘paper clip’ on the western fringe of the city of Ipswich. But last year the circuit turned over a new leaf when Chaz Mostert held on for his maiden win in the category in his Dick Johnson Racing Falcon. It was a hugely popular win for the legendary Queensland team which had seen lean times and also for young Mostert, an L-plater who came of age. Mostert is now the #2 driver at Ford Performance Racing and hoisted his second career main game win at the Perth round earlier this year. Queensland Raceway was also the venue last year for Scott McLaughlin to score his second win in the top category after his monumental Pukekohe success on ANZAC weekend. The win of McLaughlin in the middle heat at the

six-turn track importantly broke a winning sequence from the Triple Eight team that had stretched to six. Mostert is coming off the back of some promising results at the Townsville meeting where he finished fifth in the middle heat then made the top 10 shoot out for Sunday’s longer race while his team-mate Mark Winterbottom missed out on the one-lap runoff. Security Winterbottom came back to finish sixthAll-In-One in the race however Mostert produced another excellent run to wind up in seventh. The 2010 Australian Formula Ford champion returns to a track forever seared into his memory and with a decent shot at striking paydirt again.

ord factory driver Chaz Mostert has been assessed at the liberal odds of $18 for the opening heat at the Coates Hire Ipswich 400 meeting. This quote looks particularly generous following on from Mostert’s promising form at the Townsville 400 meeting earlier this month. Furthermore Queensland Raceway is the scene of Mostert’s maiden win in the main game when he lifted Dick Johnson Racing back to a rare victory last year. At that same meeting Scott McLaughlin was also a winner although the Volvo driver has been rated a safe $7 chance. Only the Red Bull Racing Australia pair of Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes are ahead of him at $3.60 and $5.50 respectively. Mostert’s team-mate and championship leader Mark Winterbottom sits on the same line of betting as McLaughlin at $7.

Mostert hoping to repeat breakthrough moment at QR ust 12 months ago Chaz Mostert headed to Queensland Raceway as a precocious young talent but he left as the talk of the paddock by becoming a fully fledged V8 Supercar race winner. Its been a whirlwind year for the young Queenslander since his maiden breakthrough triumph at the Ipswich circuit for an emotional Dick Johnson Racing outfit. Now the star of the future is ready to return to the scene of that triumph as a better driver with a hunger to rekindle that magic this weekend. “It would be fantastic to go back-to-back and win again this year but you go to every track with a goal that if you’re fast enough you definitely want to try and win, it’s an awesome feeling,” said Mostert.

Gone are the colours of DJR replaced by the blue chip corporate scene of the factory Ford Performance Racing team following a high profile move to join Mark Winterbottom at the FPR fold for the 2014 season. Such a move to one of the paddock’s biggest teams brings with it a whole new set of variables to perform too. Expectation levels are raised along with the pressure to perform and it is fair to say the 22-year-old has been a victim of the situation in the early part of the season. In his first 10 races for FPR the 2010 Australian Formula Ford champion recorded just three top 10 finishes. His performances were also littered with uncharacteristic mistakes but a good driver doesn‘t just lose his talent overnight. Also it is well documented around the

paddock that FPR’s Falcon’s are very much a different beast to wrestle compared to the DJR Falcon Mostert made his own. However, FPR’s faith was dutifully repaid as Mostert found his groove at Pukekohe with two third place finishes and since then has gone on to become a force to be reckoned with in this year’s championship. It was at Barbagallo that he really laid down a marker to the rest of the field with an impressive drive to victory in the 83 lap feature which saw him beat both Craig Lowndes and team-mate Winterbottom to the flag. 2014

While his Perth victory is the greatest of his career to date, Mostert is eager to return to his home circuit this weekend, a venue that catapulted him into the V8 Supercars spotlight. Mostert says he is eternally grateful for that win last year, a moment he feels secured him the big move to FPR. “It was an amazing feeling last year to win the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 race and my first in V8 Supercars at a place that means more to me than most drivers,” said Mostert. “This is because I had a lot of my family there and growing up in Queensland it was pretty special to win a round that I still call home. “I think for sure winning last year’s race helped me get to where I am with Ford Performance Racing this year. “They (FPR) chucked me into the Dick Johnson Racing outfit to get some experience last year with the intention of maybe, in a couple of years, looking to step me up to the Factory Ford squad. “To get a win so early in my V8 Supercars career, I think it definitely helped open their (FPR) eyes that I’d be ready for a spot in the factory squad incase they might need me the following year and fortunately

that turned out to be the case.” While Mostert has proved he has the speed and skills to conquer the six turn Queensland Raceway circuit, the last time FPR won at the venue was back in 2008 with Winterbottom. Since that victory Triple Eight have emerged as the dominant force and it is likely he will face a battle with both Red Bull’s of Jamie Whincup and Lowndes to stand on the top step. However, young Mostert is feeling confident he can repeat history to claim a
third career win. “Queensland Raceway was good to us last year, our car was on song from the start of the weekend so it all depends how you roll out [of the garage], if we roll out on the Friday pretty competitive I think we can have a strong chance at success in Ipswich,” added Mostert. “In racing things can go your way and it’s hard work everywhere so it’s not an easy stroll in the park; but the Pepsi Max Fords have been strong this year so we’re confident heading to Ipswich.”

Red Bull Racing Australia’s Jamie Whincup will start his 150th V8 Supercar Championship round at the Coates Hire Ipswich 400.
The Holden driver becomes just the 19th man in the 55-year history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8SC to reach the mark. It’s appropriate Whincup reaches the milestone at Queensland Raceway. Not only is it his team’s home test track but it’s also where he made his championship debut (in 2002) and scored his first V8 Supercar Championship Pole Position (in 2007).

VIP Petfoods-backed Tekno Autosports driver Shane van Gisbergen will also achieve a milestone at Queensland Raceway – his 100th V8 Supercar Championship round start.

The Gold Coast-based New Zealander debuted at Oran Park in 2007 and becomes the 38th driver in championship history to reach the ‘100’ milestone. Queensland Raceway has been his home test circuit for his entire V8SC career however he’s never been able to score a victory there – three third places remain his best result, the last coming in the Sunday race in 2011 for Stone Brothers Racing.

Ford is in something of a pole position drought in the V8 Supercar Championship given a Falcon driver is yet to claim an ARMOR ALL Pole Position award in 2014.
The last Ford driver to take pole in the V8SC was Mark Winterbottom last November at Phillip Island – a drought of 24 races and counting. The last time a Ford driver failed to take a pole in an ATCC/V8SC season was way back in 1986.

It’s hard to go past Craig Lowndes when analysing the potential race winners at the Coates Hire Ipswich 400, given past form at Queensland Raceway.
He’s won more V8 Supercar races at the circuit than any other driver – a whopping 11. The next best is Garth Tander with five.

Queensland Raceway is the home test track for seven of the 25 cars that will line up at the Coates Hire Ipswich 400 (Red Bull Racing Australia x 2, Tekno Autosports x 1, Wilson Security Racing x 2 and Erebus Motorsport V8 x 2). Recent history shows the home teams are hard to beat there given they have claimed 10 of the last 12 races from 2009 onwards. Red Bull Racing Australia has claimed seven of those wins with Dick Johnson Racing collecting the other three.

There are a total of nine former Queensland Raceway V8 Supercar race winners in the field for the 2014 Coates Hire Ipswich 400.
Four drivers with wins this season – Shane van Gisbergen, Fabian Coulthard, Jason Bright and Lee Holdsworth – have never won a V8 Supercar race at the circuit. Neither Coulthard nor Holdsworth have ever finished on the podium at the circuit in their V8 Supercar careers.

Supercheap Auto Racing driver Tim Slade will celebrate his 29th birthday on the Sunday (August 3) of the Coates Hire Ipswich 400.
Queensland Raceway holds happy memories for Slade given it’s the circuit where he scored his first V8 Supercar podium result in 2011. He backed it up with two more podiums in the two remaining races.
