t’s been three months since V8 drivers raced their respective cars solo. Phillip Island represents a return to solo driving following the season of endurance that embraced the previous three events at the Gold Coast, Bathurst and Sandown. Teams and drivers will slip back into the slightly less complex routine of not having to adjust and in some instances compromise setup and strategy for a co-driver. The meeting will signal a return to the much vaunted 60/60 Super Sprint format - the sixth time the system has been used through the 2013 season. The Championship remains delicately poised with four drivers Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison set for a thrilling finish.

While there is small chance of the Championship being won at the high-speed island track, there is every chance that a blunder by the team or driver could all but end any sniff of a title. Tyres are set to play a pivotal role in the outcome of the meeting with a 32-lap race on Saturday followed by twin 23-lappers on Sunday. The following pages contain a wealth of formguide information so you can weigh up the pros and cons of which drivers or teams will play a prominent role across the weekend.

ased on results this season, the driver who has led at the half-time break in the opening race at the 60/60 Super Sprint meetings has a one-in-five-chance of winning at the finish. There has been five Super Sprint format Events this season and Jamie Whincup is the only driver to have been leading at the halfway point and who has gone on to win the second half. That was at Ipswich and unsurprisingly Whincup is the $3.50 favourite to win the two-part Saturday race at Phillip Island.

Whincup’s Red Bull team-mate Craig Lowndes is second favourite at $4.50 and already has a 60/60 win to his credit this season when he won at Barbagallo after Whincup had led until half-time. For the record the other races at Symmons Plains saw Whincup lead the first half before Fabian Coulthard (a $15 chance at Phillip Island) won, David Reynolds ($13) led in Darwin before succumbing to Whincup while Michael Caruso ($81.00) led to midway before James Moffat ($67) took the Winton 60/60. Interestingly the Ford Performance
Racing team-mates Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison, who are third and fourth in the Championship have never been the half-time or race winners of the Super Sprints this year. Winterbottom is rated an $8 chance on Saturday while Davison is $9. Outside the aforementioned, one of the best value bets of the race is the young Garry Rogers Motorsport ace Scott McLaughlin, already a double winner in his rookie main game season at Pukekohe and Queensland Raceway is rated at $29. ith the Championship heavily reliant on qualifying, starting positions for the Sargent Security Phillip Island 360 remain vital as the battle for the series intensifies. Returning to the much-maligned 60/60 format, which incidentally will not continue next year, the outcome remains in the balance with the top four drivers remaining firm chances to win the title ahead of the closing Sydney 500 from December 6-8. Craig Lowndes has not won a Championship since 1999, his third title, but the statistics are on his side. Lowndes goes into Phillip Island leading his Red Bull Racing Australia team-mate Jamie Whincup by a slender six points. It is the first time the 39-year-old Lowndes has led a Championship with two rounds remaining since 1999. There is 121 points between Lowndes and fourth-placed Will Davison with a

grabbed five pole positions, the most of any driver. His qualifying average for 16 events at the 4.445km circuit is 4.66, helping him win eight Championship races at the Victorian venue which has only been bettered by Mark Skaife’s nine. By comparison Whincup’s only two wins at Phillip Island came in 2009 when he won the second of his four Championships. From a betting perspective Mark Winterbottom, who is third in the points, just ahead of his team-mate Davison remains $11 for the Championship with Ladbrokes.com.au. Likewise Davison is a juicy $21 with Whincup assessed as a prohibitive $1.60 favourite ahead of Lowndes at $2.60. As good as the odds look for the Ford Performance Racing duo, Winterbottom and Davison will have to create history if they are to come from behind. While both are seeking their maiden
g Lowndes stoush maximum of 600 points up for grabs from the final two rounds. Lowndes has the odds in his favour even if Whincup remains perilously close in the points. The only time in the last five years Whincup has not led going into the final two rounds was in 2010 when he was beaten to the crown by James Courtney after an epic finale on the streets of Sydney. Phillip Island has been a happy hunting ground in qualifying for Lowndes who has

duplicating his Darwin win at Queensland Raceway while BJR driver Fabian Coulthard won at Symmons Plains, Craig Lowndes (Barbagallo) and Nissan pilot James Moffat winning at Winton. If Winterbottom or Davison manage victory at the island track, either will register the first 60/60 win for a Ford driver this season.
New surface
The category organised an emergency tyre test with Nick Percat driving one of the V8 Supercars Car of the Future prototypes recently following the issues on the totally resurfaced circuit at the MotoGP motorcycle race at the Island last month. Category tyre supplier Dunlop reported that there was no indication that the new surface would cause any concerns. Percat went under Lowndes’s race lap record of 1:33.27s by more than a second. The Lowndes’s qualifying record of 1:32.07s which he established in his final year at the Holden Racing Team is expected to come under threat.
Tander’s drought

Holden Racing Team star Garth Tander has endured the previous 12 Events this year without a pole position. The 2007 series champion has not gone a whole season without conquering qualifying since 2004 when Ford star Marcos Ambrose was at the height of his dominance. In 2013, Tander is ranked only 11th in qualifying performances with an average starting spot of 11.7. By comparison, Tander’s team-mate James Courtney is considerably better performed in qualifying this season, ranked sixth with an average grid spot of 7.97 after a head-to-head qualifying advantage of 22-9. Tander has not added a pole position to his record at the Phillip Island circuit. However Tander has a solid race record at the track winning the 2007 round the same day he wrapped up the title along with winning the 500km enduro format in 2008 and 2009.

Circuit Description Originally designed in 1956, the Phillip Island circuit was re-born for the 1989 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The fast and flowing venue has been basically unchanged and hosts two international motorcycle events (MotoGP and World Superbikes) and a full program of national events each year.
