Races 25/26 - Norton 360 Sandown Challenge I Introduction
7
Chained to the wheel If you see a few bleary-eyed mechanics in the V8 Supercars pitlane on Sunday night at Sandown, you’ll have to forgive them. As always, it’s been a big finish to the season for the category, with the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, Armor All Gold Coast 600, Falken Tasmania Challenge and Norton 360 Sandown Challenge spread over just seven weekends.
EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes
The Queensland-based crews will arrive in Melbourne direct from Tasmania, and start preparing their cars at the Sandown circuit for Races 25 and 26 from Tuesday morning.

While the Victorian squads will at least have the comfort of their regular workshops, the turnaround time is still incredibly tight. All teams, no matter where their home base lies, will be thankful that there were no major incidents at Symmons.

Jamie Whincup put one hand on the championship cup in Tasmania, and could ensure himself a cruisy weekend in Sydney next month with another strong performance this weekend. The 28-year-old TeamVodafone pilot has the runs on the board at Sandown and will again be very hard to beat. A bit of well-timed Melbourne rain could be all it takes to put Craig Lowndes’ title hopes back on track however, while if Symmons Plains is anything to go by, the soon-to-retire Paul Dumbrell lies as a real wildcard for Sandown success in his Ford Performance Racing Falcon.

Races 25/26 - Norton 360 Sandown Challenge I Q&A
Q&A
Paul Dumbrell:
Almost time
Paul Dumbrell will return to the scene of his one and only V8 Supercars Championship race victory at Sandown this weekend.
The 30-year-old, who in recent years has lived a well publicised triple-life of racing car driver, businessman and iron man, is preparing to step down from full-time driving at the end of the 2011 season.
full-time career to go, what are your feelings?
Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke to Dumbrell ahead of the weekend’s races.
I still believe I have made the right decision, and from my point of view, I have to maximise the opportunities I have in these last four races.
SPEEDCAFE: Twelve months ago, it was all happening in Dumbrell Land – you were taking poles, wins, plus you’d just announced you were only going to be a full-time drive for one more season. Now, just four races in your
PAUL DUMBRELL: Nervous, excited, regretful, all sorts of emotions are going through my head.
I’ve come off a weekend in Tasmania where we were pretty quick, but we didn’t step on the podium, which is difficult when you have so much pace. Now, I need to make amends, and I’m running out of time to make amends. Two of four to go this weekend, and I’m going to be doing my best to win another race. SPEEDCAFE: What would it mean for you to take a win this weekend? DUMBRELL: It would be phenomenal. I would have to ask myself if I’d really like to drive at Homebush! It would be a great place to win. It’s my home race, a lot of friends and family are coming out. It would be good to just to have a solid weekend at my home race, and that’s why it was such a good thing to win last year.

Races 25/26 - Norton 360 Sandown Challenge I Q&A
It has been a good track for us too. Our cars were strong at both Tassie and Sandown last year, so I’ve got no doubt we’ll be doing up there somewhere.
We’ve certainly come a long way since Queensland Raceway where we all finished outside the top 20 with no reported problems.
SPEEDCAFE: FPR had strong results at Symmons, and you guys were fast at Sandown last year. Is the team confident of maintaining that pace?
SPEEDCAFE: You’ve spoken many times about this being your ‘final races.’ It probably won’t be, as you’ll have the endurances races ...
DUMBRELL: Everyone is very upbeat. We certainly had a lean patch at the start of this year where we didn’t have a handle on the soft tyre and everything associated with that.
DUMBRELL: I guess I’ve just been splitting up these eras of my career – my full-time and part-time career. I’ll more than likely do the endurance races, but it’s not guaranteed.
After Queensland Raceway, we tested and tried a number of things with the soft tyre and found a direction to head in which we’ve done in the last couple of rounds. At the Gold Coast, Will (Davison) and Frosty (Mark Winterbottom) were competitive in the race, and at Tasmania, front-row starts, pole position and podiums – the results really speak for themselves.
I have been very vocal about my ambition of going to Kona (Hawaii) and trying to qualify for the Iron Man World Championships. Unfortunately, it’s on the Bathurst weekend, and that’s how it has been for as long as I’ve known.
We can’t see any reason why we won’t be front runners, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to getting the most out of the car on the day. You can have all the essence of it sitting in front of you, but unless you maximise it, you’re not going to be at the front. SPEEDCAFE: Why is it that you’ve been so strong at Symmons Plains and Sandown since you joined FPR? DUMBRELL: Both are very aggressive braking circuits, and you’ve also got to be very aggressive on the kerbs (at Sandown), which we’ve been able to get a handle on in the past 18 months. We’ve been to tracks this year where we’ve been off the pace, but were competitive last year. Fundamentally, we didn’t take a step forward that we all expected (from 2010 to 2011), but as I said, post-Queensland Raceway, we had a very fruitful test, and we got an understanding of what was going wrong, and every soft round from there, we’ve been competitive. I don’t think you can pinpoint just one thing, it’s just that we’ve had a better understanding of the tyre, what we’ve needed to do to get better tyre life.
11
I’ll be faced with an interesting decision in the next 12-24 months – the endurance races will always be here, but my body and fitness might not, so if I do qualify for Kona, it will be a hard one. At the moment, I’m treating every race as though it’s my last. Whatever tension I have in my life now, there might be other things going on that may make me decide never to race again.
“I don’t think you can pinpoint just one thing, it’s just that we’ve had a better understanding of the tyre, what we’ve needed to do to get better tyre life.” ™

Sandown International Motor Raceway
Located just 25km from the Melbourne CBD, Sandown International Motor Raceway is a 3.1km circuit that circumnavigates the Sandown Racecourse horse racing facility. First opened in 1962, the circuit has been used in three significantly different configurations, with the original, 3.1km, eight-turn layout given a major overhaul in order to host a round of the FIA’s World Endurance Championship in 1984. The extended 3.9km version lasted just four years however, with its tight inner loop proving unpopular with drivers and spectators alike. The current layout consists of 13 official corners,
with its front and back straights each measuring just under a kilometre in length - putting an emphasis on horsepower and drive-traction. Sandown holds the record for hosting the highest number of events in the history of the AustralianTouring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship. The 2011 Norton 360 Sandown Challenge marks the circuit’s 42nd championship event. Next year will see Sandown host a V8 Supercars endurance race for the first time since 2007. The change in format will recommence Sandown’s tradition of hosting a touring car endurance race that began in 1964 with the Sandown 6 Hour.

Races 25/26 - Norton 360 Sandown Challenge I Tech Preview
TECH PREVIEW with
CAMPBELL LITTLE
This weekend’s Norton 360 Sandown Challenge is obviously a difficult one for the teams because it’s twinned with Symmons Plains. The Victorian teams will get their cars off the boat from Tasmania and then quickly turn them around in their own workshops before heading to Sandown. For the Queenslanders, all their preparation work is done at Sandown itself. It’s not a disadvantage for them, but it’s a long couple of weeks for the crew.
The front straight, both coming on and going off, are critical. You’ve got to have a car that is able to brake on those into Turn 1, and turn to the apex. Typically you see that a lot of cars either brake and then understeer or brake and then oversteer and can’t get through Turn 1 with any speed. You also need to be able to ride the kerbs, especially up through Turns 2, 3 and 4. They’re very big kerbs, and the cars take quite a pounding over those. At Sandown, it’s not just the apex kerbs you’ve got to consider either. You’ve simply got to use the exit kerbs, especially the one onto the front straight. There’s no drive on it, but you’ve got to widen the corner in order to carry the car speed, so it’s a real challenge to get the power down. Getting drive off of the four slow corners is vital.
Circuit Sandown has got a few of very unique elements to it, and requires a lot of different things from the car. Like Symmons Plains, it’s a circuit that requires good drive-traction, good horsepower and a driver with a lot of braking confidence. That being said, it has a lot of characteristics that are different The great thing about Sandown is that you’ve also got the to what we needed last weekend.

high speed areo section across the back of Dandenong to contend with as well. It’s really a race track where you need to have a bit of everything going for you. Format It’s the same race and tyre format as we had at Symmons, so the strategy is fairly similar with one stop in the 120km race on Saturday and two in the 200km race on Sunday. It’s always weather dependent at Sandown though of course. It’s going to be really good going back next year for the long distance race here on the hard tyre. We had a very good car there last year on the hard tyre, but it wasn’t so good on the soft. We’ll have to see what happens when we get back there.
was just extraordinary. Safety Cars though aren’t all that uncommon, but it usually depends on how much rain they’ve had in the lead-up as to what the out-field is like. Cars being stranded just off the circuit on a boggy outfield is classic Sandown. Form The Triple Eight cars have been very strong here in recent years. Their package is very very good on the bumpy circuits, which is something they’ve honed over many days testing at Willowbank. They’re able to not only brake well over the bumps, but get the turn and the drive as well. They’ll be the benchmark, no doubt.
Last year we saw red flag stoppages in both races, which

Sandown has undergone major upgrade works since the V8 Supercars last raced at the venue. A multi-million dollar upgrade has been completed, with a new safety wall constructed on the outside of turn four and the earth-filled tyre barrier behind the turn 13 gravel trap removed. Triple-layer steel barriers now line the circuit from turn six at the top of the back straight down

to turn 13 which leads onto the pit straight, while the dip on the front Brock Straight in front of the grandstand has also been smoothed out. Next year, Sandown will host the traditional 500km pre-Bathurst endurance event for the first time since 2007. It will also be the home of the official pre-season test, run for the first time in 2011 at Eastern Creek.
There are just five drivers that have finished all of the 24 V8 Supercars Championship races held this season. Championship leader Jamie Whincup, Alex Davison, Will Davison, Shane van Gisbergen and Rick Kelly are all yet to record a DNF (did not finish) against their names in the results sheets this year. On the flip side, Warren Luff has the most DNFs for the year (six), followed closely by Todd Kelly (five) and Jason Bright and Russell Ingall (four each).
Three teams are locked in contention for the Most Improved Award from 2010 to 2011. First given in 2006, the award recognises the improvement of a particular team and its entry over the course of 12 months, judged from the final championship points year to year. Both the Bundaberg Racing #61 entry and Kelly Racing #11 entry have improved 13 positions over where they finished last year in the championship, while the Stone Brothers Racing #4 entry has improved 12 spots. Last year’s award was won by Rod Nash Racing with its #55 The Bottle-O Racing Team entry.

Races 25/26 - Norton 360 Sandown Challenge I The Lowndes Guide
DayTime CRAIG ON THE SANDOWN I love racing in Melbourne and Sandown is almost a unique race for us now in that it’s in a large capital city. I’m originally from Melbourne, so I always like to spend a bit of time in town on either side of the event to visit the family and to catch up with friends. Being November you would think it will be warm for the event, but you just never know in Melbourne, it could be pouring with rain or 30 degrees. Melbourne is a great city; there is plenty to do on any night of the week and plenty of good places to eat.
CRAIG ON THE NOTRON 360 SANDOWN CHALLENGE I really enjoy racing at Sandown, I’ve had a lot of success at the circuit both in sprint races and endurance races and I still consider it to be a home event for me. As the penultimate round of the championship it is a very important round in terms of the title and anyone hoping to win the series will need to have a good event. The circuit is very flowing and enjoyable to drive on and it suits the Triple Eight cars really well. Hopefully I can get another win this weekend and really put the pressure on Jamie.

SKIPPING Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean you workout schedule needs to suffer. TEAMVODAFONE DRIVER CRAIG LOWNDES shows you the potential of a hotel room/ bedroom as a mini-gym with another exercise in your ‘on the move’ training programme. How to do it: - Do one jump. That’s it. - Next, do two sets of two jumps. - Then three sets of three. - Continue this progression until you can skip for 10 sets of 10, or you’ve gone for 15 to 20 minutes. - Whenever you miss a jump, go back and repeat the previous level.

I love Italian food and this has to be one of the best little pizza places going around. Located close to the city in South Yarra, it’s perfect for a night out.
St Kilda is a great part of Melbourne and nothing beats the Stokehouse when it comes to eating out. This venue looks out into Port Phillip Bay and is a great spot for an afternoon drink or some food.

The second half of James Courtney’s year has arguably been even more disappointing than the first. While staying out of trouble, the reigning champion has suffered badly form a lack of outright speed. Only two events remain in which to turn it around. Qualifying solidly in the top 10 at Sandown will be a good start.

Stunning qualifying effort on Saturday in Tasmania but failed to fire in the races. Symmons and Sandown are the two circuits that this customer FPR chassis could be expected to be at its best, and D’Alberto certainly does not lack miles at the Melbourne venue. Don’t be surprised to again see the #3 pop up in the 10 at some stage across the weekend.

A real threat for victory this weekend. FPR continued its rejuvenated soft tyre form at Symmons Plains, and produced fast cars at Sandown last year. Package still lacks the outright pace and consistency of Whincup, but the prospect of a Davison win at Sandown is always special.

Experienced an encouraging weekend in Tasmania - pressing the top 10 for the first time in a long time. Will be desperate to prove that Symmons form was more than a one-off.

Has a question mark next to his name after suffering from a rib injury in Tasmania. Had to be replaced by Cameron McConville for Sunday’s race at Symmons, and may struggle to do 200km at Sandown even if he is fit enough to start. Andrew Jones on stand-by.

Highly competitive in Tasmania but lacked the last bit of speed to challenge the podium. Made a major leap forward in qualifying, but failed to excel late in the stints another surprise compared to early season form. Struggled in qualifying here last year, but should threaten the top five this time around.

Wheels literally fell off Murphy’s recent resurgence at Symmons Plains. Will do a solid job at Sandown, but the top 10 is a lofty goal considering the team’s mediocre run last year and its preference for the harder tyre.

Suffered from heavy rear-tyre wear on Sunday in Tasmania, prompting an early final pitstop and ultimately a lean-fuel run to the chequered flag. Is always thereabouts, but may struggle to challenge the top five over the journey.

Qualified last on Saturday in Tasmania amid another dismal weekend. Car has not been right since Queensland Raceway - proving worryingly uncompetitive on both compounds of tyre across a large spread of race tracks. Qualifying in the top 20 will be a good performance considering recent form.

Holdsworth enjoyed moderate results in Tasmania as his lengthy stint with GRM edges towards its conclusion. Extremely competitive at Sandown last year, and is again expected to thrive on the high-kerb layout. Will be disappointed if not pushing the top five.

Had an encouraging showing on Saturday in Tasmania, before traffic in qualifying hurt his Sunday chances. Should be pushing the top 10 at Sandown, and needs to step up if he is to be leading the team next year.

Lacked speed at Symmons Plains - a particularly disappointing outcome considering it was among PMM’s best circuits in 2010. Can expect to be in for another long weekend at Sandown.

Found himself again back in the pack at Symmons Plains, where he struggled to match the qualifying speed of his team-mates. Needs to achieve a greater gain on the green tyres in qualifying if he is to challenge the top 10 at Sandown.

The #49 entry was among the most disappointing in Tasmania, with Owen sliding back into the midpack after showing impressive speed on the Gold Coast. Form is hard to predict for Sandown, but the potential is certainly there for a return to the top 10.

Had good speed in Tasmania, and certainly did not want for aggression. Was a winner here last year and is set to again contend this weekend, despite a tough season. Absolutely one to watch in qualifying.

Ran solidly in Tasmania, threatening the top 10 all weekend. Will be buoyed by his new deal with Brad Jones Racing for next season, and hungry to underline the commercial considerations involved in his axing from Walkinshaw Racing.

Whincup built himself a comfortable points lead with two dominant wins in Tasmania. Is the benchmark in qualy and the races and will take a lot of beating. Has a terrific record at this circuit.

Headed to Tasmania confident he could challenge team-mate Jamie Whincup, but poor qualifying performances left the three-time champion well short. Will be well amongst the battle for the win again at Sandown, but can’t be expected to beat an in-form Whincup.
