The twists of time V8 Supercars’ decision to move its 500km, pre-Bathurst, endurance event back to its traditional home at Sandown this year raises the question of how the race’s history should be recorded. The official honour role of previous winners issued by V8 Supercars in the lead-up to this weekend runs under the headline of ‘Sandown endurance race’, and therefore omits the names of those who tasted victory in the Queensland 500s (1999-2002) and Phillip Island 500s (2008-11) run in the place of the Sandown 500 in recent years. Following on from that, the official list includes the winners of the 2001 and 2002 Sandown 500s run for the now defunct Procar’s production car classes. Sam Newman’s qualifying effort aboard a Lamborghini in 2002 therefore has his name in the history books as a one-time Sandown 500 pole-sitter alongside the likes of Mark Skaife, Marcos Ambrose and Rick Kelly. Whether Newman’s feat at Sandown is more relevant to what we’ll see this weekend than the heroics of Steven Johnson and Paul Radisich at the opposing V8 Supercar event in Queensland is certainly debatable. I would argue that, as the Queensland 500 and Phillip Island 500 were clearly run as replacements for the Sandown 500, the history of all three should be grouped under the tag of ‘the 500’. The different locations - and in the early days, distance - of the race over the years may see some oppose that theory, but such a move would certainly not be without precedent. The honour role for what is now the Bathurst 1000 long included the 500 mile events run at Phillip Island between 1960 and 1962. It was only the rather awkward orchestration of the ‘40th anniversary’ celebrations ahead of the 2002 Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 that saw the first three races eventually brushed aside. The amount of careful wordplay involved in this year’s ‘50 years of Bathurst’ campaign shows that the category is not afraid to iron out the crinkles of history when it suits. Perhaps it’s time to give the history of ‘the 500’ the same treatment.

T
he V8 Supercars Championship’s annual move into endurance mode sees an additional 28 drivers thrown into the white-hot title battle.. The co-driver with arguably the hardest job of all this year is Paul Dumbrell. Having called an end to his full-time career ahead of the 2012 season, the 30-year-old was quickly snapped up by TeamVodafone to partner its three-time champion Jamie Whincup. Whincup heads to Sandown with a onepoint lead in the title race over Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom after a titanic fight between the sport’s two biggest teams across the opening eight events. To put it bluntly, Whincup’s entire year’s work is about to be put into Dumbrell’s hands.
Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke to the likeable Victorian ahead of the weekend. SPEEDCAFE: You’ve been out of a full-time V8 Supercars seat for nine months now. You’ve done test days and practice sessions in Jamie’s car, but do you feel ready for your return to race conditions? PAUL DUMBRELL: I feel as ready as I’m ever going to be. From my point of view, coming out of a nine year full-time career to just do two races, it has been a year of adjustment, but I think I’ve done as many laps as I can. I’ve done test days and a ride day, so I feel comfortable in the car. I’ve had the luxury of coming out of a full-time gig. Next year might be a different story with a lack of Car of the Future experience, but right now, I’m feeling as good as I can.
SPEEDCAFE: It must be nice knowing that your return is at Sandown, a place that has been kind to you over the past two years. DUMBRELL: When I heard the rumour last year that the race going back to Sandown, that brought a smile to my face. I won my first race there in 2010, but we were probably one of the faster cars. It’s a track I enjoy, for sure. It’s a local, home track too. I get to stay at home and focus on the job of, basically, doing whatever Jamie wants me to do! The last few years, it was about me trying to maximise it for myself. This year, I’m there to do a job. If they want me to do 40 laps or 60 laps, I’ll do it and I’ll do it to the best of my ability. SPEEDCAFE: The bookies have yourself and Jamie as the favourites for the race.
7
This would probably be the first time you’re in that position. What sort of pressure does that bring? DUMBRELL: The only other time I was the favourite was when the bookies made a typo! It’s a pressure I’ve never had to deal with before, but Jamie has to deal with that week in, week out. At the end of the day, it’s another motor race. I’ve been racing there for 10 years, but this is the first time I’ve raced with the number #1 on the door. I just have to drive to the best of my ability and bring it back with a straight steering wheel and no marks on the side of the car and let him get in and take on the likes of Craig (Lowndes), Mark Winterbottom or Will Davison. I can’t be drawn into a battle with those guys. I’ll have a clear idea of what they want me to do come race day.
I certainly won’t be able to win the race for them, but I’ll definitely be able to lose it. That’s my philosophy. SPEEDCAFE: Last year, you were in the Winterbottom/Davison/FPR camp. This year, you’re against them. As you’ve probably seen from the sidelines this year, there’s only been four cars capable of winning this year. Have you been surprised to see how dominant those four have been? DUMBRELL: It has been interesting. Only
two years ago, DJR was a dominant team. James Courtney won the title and Stevie Johnson was right up there. It has been a year of two halves, really. FPR was the dominant team in the first half of the year, and that has swung now in Triple Eight’s favour. No doubt the building and developing Car of the Future is hurting some teams in the background. It has been a challenging year Continued on page 9 >>

for everyone.
At the end of the day, the good teams will always come to the front, and that’s what Triple Eight is. They’ve put their head down and are getting the results they deserve. SPEEDCAFE: So, do you miss racing as a full-time driver? DUMBRELL: For the first six months of the year, I was working seven days a week, 18-20 hours a day, trying to piece together the sale of our business (to Metcash). Only in the last six weeks have I been able to sit back and get some normality back into my life. I have no doubt, after Sandown, I’ll be able to sit down and ask myself “how much do I really miss it?” I’ve kind of been lucky that I’ve been really busy of late and haven’t had much time to think too hard about it. After this year’s races, I might sit back and say “what a great 10 years, I’ve had.” I had my 30th birthday last week and I’m very happy with where my life has taken me. SPEEDCAFE: So being an endurance driver for next year and beyond is not a 100 percent deal for youself?
to be able to do it for the next 10 years, but I just really want to take it year by year. There’s a lot of other challenges in my life, so I want to do whatever I can to do them to the best of my ability. If I can do my corporate career, as well as motor racing, then that’s great, but I will certainly never go into a year where the commitment that I can offer wasn’t a valuable thing. If I feel I can’t give them the commitment, I’ll be the first to put my hand up and step aside. SPEEDCAFE: Ten years ago, as you were winning Development Series and moving into the Championship, would you even have thought you’d be saying “I’m consider total retirement from the sport at 30?” DUMBRELL: 100 percent not a chance. Even five years ago, I wouldn’t have thought that. The 2008 season was really a land mark year for me in terms of the focus changing from solely motor racing. That was the year my focus shifted, and I took a decision where my focus was going to be. It was a wake-up call too, with Lucas having his accident and my father being diagnosed with cancer. It was a year to reassess where I was at from a personal and family point of view.
DUMBRELL: I’m not committed to anything. I just want to get through these endurance races. I have no pre-conceived ideas longterm.
The biggest critic of myself stopping my motor racing career was my father. He was the most disappointed about it, and him reading this, with me contemplating that I won’t even do the enduros again, he probably won’t be too happy.
I’ll try and give myself the best opportunity
SPEEDCAFE: Life has certainly changed
for you. As you mentioned early, the big news was your business being sold to the Metcash Group. How are things tracking along? DUMBRELL: It’s going well. I’d been involved with Metcash through The Bottle-O for the past couple of years, so I understood a little bit about the business. The great thing about the Autobarn and Autopro business is that we get to work with independent franchisees who are passionate about their business, and we’re in partnership for them to make money. It’s no better way to see a successful independent model through the Metcash business, and ours, and we get to share the journey with our members. Coming from a family business, jumping into a corporatised, publicly listed business, it’s certainly different. It’s a completely different dynamic. It’s a massive change, and even bigger change when I jump into a race suit and drive a car in the Sandown 500. It’s certainly something I didn’t think I’d be doing five years ago.

Race 20 - Sandown I Tech Preview
TECH PREVIEW with
CAMPBELL LITTLE
I
’m really looking forward to having the 500km pre-Bathurst endurance race back at Sandown this year. There’s a lot of history there for our category, and it’s a better warm-up for Bathurst than Phillip Island was in terms of how it stresses the cars. The kerbs are quite vicious, so it really tests the drivelines. It’s no surprise to see a few cars broken before the end of the race. The Sandown 500 is such an easy race to lose. A small mistake or being dragged into someone else’s incident can mean you spend 10 minutes parked in the sand, particularly in the first three or four corners. If that happens your day is done before it really starts. Likewise, a small off through Turns 10 or 11 at any point can fill your radiator with mud very quickly. There are just so many traps to fall into. Triple Eight and ourselves have set the pace this year, but a lot of teams like Walkinshaw Racing, Stone Brothers and Garry Rogers usually have good cars at Sandown. I think because of the number of street circuits that we race on nowadays everyone is getting more of a handle on how to approach these bumpy circuits, so I wouldn’t say anyone heads to the event as a clear favourite. Strategy The way the windows are set up with fuel and co-drivers means it’s going to be a very interesting race strategically. The basis of the equation is that the co-drivers have to do 54 laps, and most people’s fuel windows are going to be 48 or 49 laps, so you’re going to have an extra pitstop thrown in there at some stage. You’ll either be doing a very short stop somewhere or you’ll try to shorten each of your stints, which will open up your other fuel windows quite a bit.
There is a chance that people will try and do a massive fuel economy run to get through on two stops, but I honestly don’t think you can do it. Leaving the pitlane and all that kind of carry on pre-race takes fuel as well, so you lose a lap or two before it even starts. There’ll be a bit to work out with fuel numbers when we get to the track because obviously the data we have from last year was recorded on the soft tyres, and the higher grip with that tyre means higher speed and higher consumption. It might be that we can do 49 laps, but finding five more in a stint would still be pretty difficult, especially if you want to stay competitive. Sandown is a place where running behind other cars and all of the other saving techniques that a driver can do does make a lot of difference, rather than just relying on the trim switch. Some codrivers will be better at saving fuel than others, and guys like Paul Dumbrell that have recent experience as a full-time driver should be really on top of it. I think Plan A for a lot of guys will be to start the co-driver in the car and then pit at the first opportunity, leaving them in for a second run. Things that could get in the way of that will include a
13
desire to split strategies across team cars to avoid pit stacking, and how well you did in the Saturday races. Saturday format The Saturday format is quite different this year, with the final starting position for Sunday determined by the finishing order of the second qualifying race, rather than a points aggregate across the two qualifying races. So previously if you had one bad finish on Saturday you could still start mid-pack, but now if you have a bad one you’re really disadvantaged heading into the main race. Personally I don’t think that’s a positive change, especially when you’ve got co-drivers in the car of varying experience levels. If anyone does get thrown out of sequence in those two races you can bet that they’ll look at doing something different to make up the ground in the race. Running an alternate strategy to get out of the traffic could be quite an attractive option. The co-drivers no longer have a qualifying session this year, but arguably they’ve got more weight on their shoulders with the race they do, so there’ll be plenty of nervous people around on Saturday afternoon!
Safety Cars The early weather predictions are for a dry weekend with rain in the days leading up to it. Pre-event rain at Sandown always creates more Safety Cars. Wet verges mean cars get stuck more regularly, regardless of whether it’s actually raining on the day or not. Sandown historically has quite a high frequency of Safety Cars, particularly in the longer races. I think that some of the cautions we’ve seen this year have been thrown to spice up the races as much as anything, so that’s always something that’s hard to plan for. Sandown isn’t an easy track to overtake on, and if you have someone exit the pits with good tyres late in the race, a Safety Car could make it very interesting. The length of each Safety Car period is an important variable as well, especially considering the fuel windows. We’ve seen some big crashes there that take a long time to clear up, so that’s where you’ve got to roll the dice and figure out how to work it. It’s going to be an interesting day.

raig Lowndes is often lauded for being strong in the second half of the V8 Supercars Championship, but his record in the pre-Bathurst, 500-kilometre enduro should be more enough to make his rivals nervous. Lowndes has won the pre-Bathurst ‘500 seven times at its three different homes - at Sandown (1996, 1997, 2005, 2007), Queensland Raceway (2000) and Phillip Island (2010, 2011). His recent record in the ‘500 is sparkling, finishing on the podium seven times in a row from the 2005 Sandown 500 onwards, including victory the last two years at Phillip Island with Mark Skaife. In total, Lowndes has an amazing 12 podium finishes in the 18 years he’s competed in the preBathurst classic.

range of drivers are making ‘first starts’ at the Sandown 500. Dunlop Series front-runners Scott McLaughlin and Scott Pye will make their V8 Supercars Championship debuts, while another 10 drivers - Nick Percat, Dale Wood, Tim Blanchard, Daniel Gaunt, David Russell, David Wall, Taz Douglas, Alex Premat, Christian Klien and Jonny Reid - are making their first V8SC appearance at Sandown. Add to that Karl Reindler, Dean Fiore, James Moffat, Tim Slade and Michael Patrizi and that makes a total of 17 drivers competing in their first Sandown 500, given many young drivers were not in the championship the last time the race was run in 2007.

This year’s event will be the eighth time the Sandown endu classic has been part of the ATCC/V8SC. It counted for point 1976 and 1977 and from 2003 to 2007.

t’s easy to overlook considering the race has been absent for five years, but Ford teams have dominated the Sandown 500 in recent times. Falcon pilots won the race four times in a row from 2004 to 2007 with Stone Brothers Racing (‘04), Triple Eight Race Engineering (‘05, ‘07) and Ford Performance Racing (‘06) collecting the silverware. The last Holden victory came nine years ago in 2003 with Mark Skaife and Todd Kelly.

eamVodafone have won the last eight races straight in the V8 Supercars Championship, a feat not seen for 10 years.
The last time a team won eight V8SC races in a row was in 2002 when the Holden Racing Team (with Mark Skaife and Jason Bright) achieved the feat.
TeamVodafone would need to win 13 races in a row to match the streak recorded by HRT in late 1998/early 1999 with Skaife and Lowndes.

Eight straight wins heading to Sandown sees this team as the favourites. The Vodafone cars have proven especially strong on bumpy circuits such as Sandown in the past, with Whincup taking the Sunday win last year. The team has two new co-drivers in 2012, but arguably both entries are strengthened by the changes. Lowndes’ endurance form and Luff’s dependability indicate that the #888 entry is a marginally better package on paper than car #1, although early-race track position will be vital for pit strategy - putting a significant emphasis on each co-driver’s Saturday sprint race performance.

The form of the three Walkinshaw Racing Holdens has been on the rise over the last two events, with the developments trialled on Ingall’s car at Queensland Raceway appearing to carry across well to the HRT entries in Sydney. The Sydney pace and thereabouts dry-weather performance of HRT at Sandown last year sees the Tander/Percat entry loom as the most likely of any in the field to break the HRT/ FPR steamroller. As was the case last year, Percat should prove to be one of the quickest co-drivers, although an error-free performance is far from assured.

SBR’s quest to step up to the TeamVodafone/FPR level saw its three entries splinter off into different set-up directions at Sydney Motorsport Park, with mixed results typically forthcoming. the team’s cars generally like bumpy, lowgrip circuits like Sandown, although a win appears unlikely against such formidable opposition. Race 20 - Sandown I Driver Profiles
The Bagman’s Say Ford Performance Racing Base: Campbelfield, Victoria Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Ford Performance Racing Engines: Ford Performance Racing Team principal: Tim Edwards
The FPR entries have run within a whisker of taking victories from TeamVodafone over the last eight races, and proved similarly competitive at Sandown last November. The team has three of the strongest co-drivers around, although form in recent races suggests that only the #5 and #6 entries can be considered genuine chances for victory. The Davison/McIntyre car is appears to theoretically be the team’s best shot, with the Kiwi having been poached by FPR following another strong performance with SBR in last year’s enduros.

The Bagman’s Say Kelly Racing Base: Braeside, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Kelly Racing Engines: Kelly Racing Team principals: Rick and Todd Kelly
If the prediction of a dry Sunday eventuates, it could be a long race for these four entries. Rick Kelly won the opening heat at Sandown in the wet last year, but struggled for pace during both the dry Friday and Sunday running. Equipment aside, the Rick Kelly/David Russell combination is one of the very best in the field, with Russell having added two championship events (replacing the injured Greg Murphy) to his full-time Dunlop Series drive with the season this year. Anywhere in the top 10 will signify a good day.

The Bagman’s Say Brad Jones Racing Base: Albury, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Walkinshaw Racing Engines: Noonan Race Engines Team principals: Brad and Kim Jones
Brad Jones Racing’s chances of a top-five finish at Sandown this weekend could well rest with the performance of David Besnard. The #14 entry has consistently posted top results in recent events, taking five top six finishes from the last seven races. BJR is Besnard’s third endurance destination in three seasons, and while the Queenslander is undoubtedly fast, mistakes have curtailed recent efforts. The Bright/Jones combination appears a more reliable entry, although car #8’s form has been very up and down this year.

The Bagman’s Say Dick Johnson Racing Base: Yatla, Queensland Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: InnoV8 (Roger Higgins) Team principal: Dick Johnson
Season 2012 has been a tough slog to date for Dick Johnson Racing. There is little to suggest that the endurance races will see an improvement in outright speed, but the greater number of variables involved in the longer races may at least provide a chance to sneak into the top 10. Halliday and Simonsen head to Sandown with extremely limited V8 laps this year, although both have at least done significant race miles in GT cars overseas. The presence of Davison has the #18 car as arguable the best positioned of the four, despite Moffat’s lean results.

The Bagman’s Say Tekno Autosports Base: Stapylton, Queensland Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Jonathon Webb
Jonathon Webb enjoyed his best V8SC qualifying performance yet last time out in Sydney, starting Race 18 from an impressive second on the grid - a fourth top 10 grid slot in seven races. Promisingly for Sandown, the Tekno cars have also shown plenty of speed on the hard tyre earlier in the year. Sandown will mark McLaughlin’s first championship start, although three seasons in the Dunlop Series and two in New Zealand’s own V8 classes means the youngster could hardly be better prepared to assist Webb towards a top 10 finish.

The Bagman’s Say Garry Rogers Motorsport Base: Knoxfield, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Garry Rogers Motorsport Engines: Walkinshaw Racing Team principal: Garry Rogers
GRM heads to Sandown in its best form of the season, with Caruso scoring four consecutive top 10 qualifying results over the Ipswich and Sydney weekends, and finishing between eighth and 11th on each occasion. Ritter is a former Sandown 500 winner and can be expected to help Caruso towards a top 10 finish. Perkins is also a top quality co-driver, but Premat sits last of the full-time runners in the points standings after a difficult first nine events. The Frenchman at least has experience of Sandown from the pre-season test.

The Bagman’s Say Tony D’Alberto Racing Base: Knoxfield, Victoria Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Ford Performance Racing Engines: Ford Performance Racing Team principal: Al D’Alberto
Despite qualifying in the top dozen for five of the last six races, D’Alberto continues to be without a top 10 finish since Hamilton in mid-April. Wood returns to this car for a second consecutive year, and will benefit from recent running in the Dunlop Series. Last year’s top 10 finish at Bathurst proves what this combination can do in the longer races. Repeating such a result can be considered as good as a win for this small team.
#3 Hiflex Racing - Tony D’Alberto/Dale Wood Born: 9 December 1985 V8SC debut: 2005 Race wins: 0 Career Highlights: 1st 2007 V8 Supercars Development Series, 6th 2007 Bathurst 1000, 5th 2005 V8 Supercars Development Series, 9th 2011 Bathurst 1000

The Bagman’s Say Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Base: Nunawading, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Lucas Dumbrell
The Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport entry provides Roland Dane protégé Scott Pye with the ideal low-expectation first run in the main championship. The former British Formula Ford Champion has proven a mature head in Triple Eight’s Dunlop Series entry this season as the youngster learns the intricacies of tin-top vehicles. While this entry is not expected to be in the top half of the field on outright pace, a consistent and mistake-free day from both Douglas and Pye will likely see it somewhere in the top 20.
