olvo has been one of the remarkable success stories of the car of the future era. Only the brave would have predicted the Volvo Polestar Racing operation under the esteemed leadership of Garry Rogers Motorsport would have come out of the blocks swinging punches. Right from the get-go the S60s have been both quick from a power perspective and proficient aerodynamically. In the hands of young tyro Scott McLaughlin, Volvo has claimed three victories (1 nonchampionship, 2 points paying) leading into the Pirtek Enduro Cup phase of the season. It has been an astonishing level of competitiveness which sees the operation a real threat heading to the Wilson Security Sandown 500. There is no doubt the Volvo’s which McLaughlin will share with Alex Premat and Robert Dahlgren will see Greg Ritter join the team will be competitive. Having started the year with a brand new Volvo S60 yet to turn a wheel in the heat of battle, Garry Rogers and his team have worked miracles to not only ensure the car is competitive but also capable of winning races.

In the hands of Scott McLaughlin, the S60 has claimed six pole positions, more than any other driver this year, and has won two championship races. While Volvo has proved a new manufacturer can come into V8 Supercars and be competitive, the Swedish manufacturer will now face the ultimate test of man and machine in V8 Supercars; the Pirtek Enduro Cup. Beginning with this weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wilson Security Sandown 500, the S60 will

encounter its toughest test to date with a race more than twice the distance of the regular season 200km feature races. The prospect of a 500km race presents the team with plenty of unknowns as to how the car will handle the distance with only so much information able to be retrieved from testing. Reliability has been an issue for the impressively fast S60, but to their credit Garry Rogers Motorsport have reacted quickly in providing solutions to problems

Engine life and fuel consumption are big factors for teams, especially new manufacturers as Erebus and Nissan found out last year. Inspite of this, the guru behind the S60’s rise to prominence, Richard Hollway, admitted the team are heading into the unknown but is reasonably confident. “In terms of reliability we are confident but on fuel consumption we are on the cusp we are not quite there so we have got some work to do there,” Hollway told Speedcafe.com. “We are certainly going into it hoping to win.” ™

Despite only one full season in the main

game under his belt, the 21-year-old Kiwi is fast becoming a potential champion of the future and is particularly strong come enduro time. McLaughlin has claimed top 10 finishes in five of the seven endurance races he has competed in. Combining the burgeoning talent of McLaughlin with the speed and experience of endurance specialist Premat has created a pairing more than capable of upsetting the perennial favourites from Triple Eight, Ford Performance racing and the HRT. If the S60 passes the endurance test with flying colours, McLaughlin can see himself challenging for the Pirtek Enduro Cup title. “Its going to be a tough gig but I can’t see any reason why we cannot be up

the front and challenge for this enduro championship,” said McLaughlin. “Its a big ask but you have to have high goals. “It seems as though that all the enduro tracks will suit our car. Alex loves the car and its pretty awesome to be back with him again. “I’ve half missed him in some ways. “He has raced all the big endurance races so he is a great weapon to have.” Having lost his seat of two years at Garry Rogers Motorsport this year to Swede Robert Dahlgren, Premat is particularly fired up for his V8 Supercars return. The experienced Frenchman has proven to be quick especially over the enduro races and was on course for a podium at Bathurst last year before a fuel issue struck. He also recorded a top 10 at Sandown last

season. “I’m really pumped and I’ve been training hard for this, Premat told Speedcafe.com “Its a huge boost for myself knowing that this car is capable of winning. “What Scotty has done this season is really impressive and the team have a done a really good job considering this is a brand new car. “Our ambition is to finish in the top three and win races, we have a strong package so lets go out and do it. “I did 40 laps in the car at Winton last week and I have to say the car is a bit easier to drive than last year in terms of balance.” While all eyes will be focussing on the enduro heavyweights at the front, Volvo and in particular McLaughlin and Premat have the potential to be this year’s Pirtek Enduro Cup surprise package.

This year’s Wilson Security Sandown 500 is a special one given 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the first running of the Sandown touring car endurance classic in 1964 won by the Alfa Romeo Ti Super of Ralph Sach and Italian Roberto Bussinello. Beginning as a Six Hour race in that year, it later morphed into a Three Hour in 1968 and from that point on became the annual, pre-Bathurst endurance race. It became a 500-kilometre race in 1984 and later disappeared from the calendar as the ‘500 was held at Queensland Raceway (1999-2002) and Phillip Island (2008-2011) prior to the Sandown 500’s return in 2012. This year is the 43rd time the race has been held, the 25th time it has been a 500-kilometre race and the 10th time it has been a part of the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercar Championship.

Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom will make his 150th V8 Supercar Championship round start at this year’s Wilson Security Sandown 500.

Winterbottom becomes the 20th driver in Championship history to reach the mark, which ironically comes at the same circuit where he made his V8SC debut as a Stone Brothers Racing endurance driver back in 2003. The 33-year-old won the Sandown 500 in 2006 with Jason Bright and was runner-up with Steve Richards in 2012. He also claimed pole position for the race in 2007.

Craig Lowndes could make history at this year’s Wilson Security Sandown 500 and equal the late, great Peter Brock’s record of nine wins in the annual pre-Bathurst endurance race.

Brock won all nine of his races at Sandown, though Lowndes has won eight across the three different venues that have hosted the annual 500-kilometre race in the V8 Supercar era. He’s clocked up five wins at Sandown (1996, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2012), two at Phillip Island (2010, 2011) and one at Queensland Raceway (2000).

Brad Jones Racing will celebrate its 200th V8 Supercar Championship round at the Wilson Security Sandown 500.

The Albury-based team made its debut in the opening round of 2000 at Phillip Island and raced Ford Falcons for eight seasons before switching to Holden Commodores from 2008 onwards. BJR has won nine V8SC races in that time however is yet to claim one at Sandown. BJR’s best Sandown 500 result remains a fourth place in 2003 with Brad Jones and John Bowe driving.

Volvo returns to the Wilson Security Sandown 500 this year for the first time in 20 years with its pair of S60s run by Garry Rogers’ team.

A Volvo last appeared in the Melbourne endurance classic back in 1994 when production cars competed in their own separate class alongside the V8s of the era. Dutchman Jan Lammers and production car expert Kent Youlden (father of Lockwood Racing endurance driver Luke) finished 19th overall and fourth in class in an 850 T-5. This year is just the fifth time (in addition to 1964, 1985, 1986 and 1994) that a Volvo has competed in the Sandown 500.

The Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander will make his 220th ATCC/V8 Supercar Championship round start at Sandown, tying former HRT teammate Mark Skaife for fourth on the all-time championship starts list.

Tander is yet to claim a Sandown 500 podium finish let alone a victory, with no less than four, fourth-placed finishes in the race in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2012.

No brothers have ever claimed victory in the Sandown 500, though Rick and Todd Kelly did come close in 2006 when they finished second to Jason Bright/Mark Winterbottom by just 0.1586s, the closest finishing margin in the race’s history.

Seven combinations have survived from last year’s Pirtek Enduro Cup for the three-round, four-race endurance component of the 2014 V8 Supercar Championship.

The Brit is joined by countryman Oliver Gavin (who competed at the 2011 Gold Coast 600 alongside Greg Murphy), Cameron Waters and Swede Robert Dahlgren on the list of drivers making their first Sandown 500 start.

Baird on a charge as Carrera Cup title race heats up eigning Porsche Carrera Cup Australia champion Craig Baird is the man in form heading into Sandown having breathed new life into the title race after a clean sweep at Sydney Motorsport Park. The New Zealander has struggled to get to grips with the all new 2014 spec Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car recording just one victory at Phillip Island heading into the last round at SMP. However, something clicked at the New South Wales circuit with Baird dominating the field to score victory in a wet race one. He confirmed his pace was not a fluke with a double victory in much drier conditions. The impressive treble has brought Baird back into play in the championship with the Kiwi just 56 points behind championship leader Steven Richards. Two thirds and a second place finish at Sydney has moved Richards 12 points clear of Warren Luff in the championship standings. Richards, Luff and Baird will dovetail their Porsche Carrera Cup Australia duties with co-driver roles in the V8 Supercars Wilson Security Sandown 500. With just two meetings of the season remaining after Sandown, points are becoming increasingly more valuable as the battle for the title intensifies. An impressive 24 cars field, the biggest grid since 2004, are set to to tackle the famous Sandown course in three 17 lap races around the 3.10km venue. Marc Cini will return to the paddock this weekend after sitting out the last round at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Races 29 - Sandown 500 I V8 Utes

Melbourne drivers set to dominate at Sandown ictorians will make up a quarter of the 2014 Australian V8 Ute Racing Series field as they hit the track for round five at the Wilson Security Sandown 500. The eight locals include; defending Sandown champion Nathan Pretty, 2013 V8 Ute Rookie of the year Elliot Barbour, 2012 Shannon’s Supercar Showdown winner Jesse Dixon, Macmahon Mining’s Gerard McLeod, Danny Buzadzic, Peter McNiven, Spud Wood and former Australian NASCAR champion Kim Jane. Jane first raced at his local track at the age of 17 and will kick off the weekend with a brand new Holden, which after a few major accidents since its birth in 2008, has had a full re-shell and makeover since the Townsville round. The Bob Jane T-Mart racer will also take on double duties over the weekend, steering Eddie Abelnica’s Melbourne’s Cheapest Cars, Ford XB GT Coupe, in the Touring Car Masters events. “The Touring Cars are faster and the handlings more like the NASCAR’s I used to race, so it will be a bit of a challenge driving the Ute and the coupe over the weekend. “I did the same thing back in 2011, plus it’s always a bonus to get extra track time, even at a race track I’ve driven at since I was a teenager,” explained the 47-year-old. Jane won the round in 2009 and the same weekend celebrated his 150th V8 Ute Race, he will be out to grab his second podium for the year. Go Pro Racing’s Nathan Pretty is hoping to defend his Sandown title, the former V8 Supercar driver is yet to win a round this year and will be wanting it more than ever in front of a home crowd. “It’s been a while since we raced, so I’m really looking forward to getting back into it. “I’ve always done well at Sandown and I’m hoping to continue the tradition, it would be great to get a round win on the board this year, it’s definitely overdue,” said Pretty. Vibe Audio’s Peter McNiven will make his second appearance in the 2014 Series, as well as New Zealand V8 Ute Racers James Urquhart and Sam Barry. Queenslander Stephen Wilson will race for the first time this year, after making his debut on the Gold Coast last year, and will be back racing in a Williams Race Tech Holden. After two practice sessions on the Friday, the 32 car field will kick off racing on Saturday, 13th September, with Race 2 and Race 3 televised live on 7Mate (check local guides).
