An awkward compromise It’s been a tempestuous build-up to the Sandown 500 this year thanks to the ongoing controversy over fuel consumption parity. V8 Supercars’ decision to introduce a compulsory number of pitstops for each of the endurance races instead of utilising the E70 fuel trialled at Winton has left both sides of the divide dissatisfied.

Those arguing that rules shouldn’t be changed to give any players a leg up remain staunch in their views that the Nissan and Mercedes teams should simply “work harder”. The two teams running the four-valve engines are meanwhile seething that V8 Supercars’ technical department has determined that the E70 fixed the consumption problem without affecting power, and yet the category has elected against using it anyway. Put that down to a victory for political pressure over science. At best, the pitstop ruling is an awkward compromise. While grumbling over the fuel would have continued largely in the background if it was used, the pitstop stipulation, by its definition, will be front-and-centre in how the races unfold. One can only hope that the rule will not play a major part in deciding this weekend’s winner. With Ford and Holden teams likely to have been marginal on a three or four stop race anyway, early Safety Car interventions would have seen those teams elect for a four-stopper regardless. Bathurst will undoubtedly be a different matter, with upwards of eight stops likely to be mandated. If a car, regardless of marque, is on track to win the race but is forced to pit late on simply to satisfy the minimum requirement, the explanation will be a hard sell to the general public. The bigger question going forward, of course, surrounds the process that the parity issue has gone through to date. While recently appointed V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton has the majority of the paddock highly optimistic over the sport’s commercial future, the technical side of the business is still desperately lacking such leadership.

Triple Eight Race Engineering: The V8 Supercar Kings
Tom Howard looks back at the first 10 years of Triple Eight’s V8 Supercars journey
W
hether it is endurance races or sprints there really has been one dominant force in V8 Supercars over the last 10 years. The rise of Triple Eight Race Engineering is probably the best example of a V8 Supercars success story. This year the Queensland-based team celebrate 10 years since they first landed on Australian shores and in that time they have transformed from rookies to the multiple championship winning team to beat. Such has been their dominance, Triple Eight have incredibly accrued four drivers championships, five Bathurst wins, more than 100 race wins and have won half of

The Australian operation bore its existence from Englishman Roland Dane’s vision back in 2003, but Triple Eight’s history harks back seven years earlier when it began in the British Touring Car Championship. It was formed by close friends Dane and former F1 driver Derek Warwick as the pair endeavored to find a new direction in motorsport. The BTCC program, which was Vauxhaull’s factory effort, included two trips to the Bathurst 1000 when it was run under Super Tourer regulations in 1997 and 1998.
the BTCC and three consecutive titles from 2001-2003, Dane lost faith in the direction of the series and sought a new challenge. His new path would bring a more permanent move to Australia, where he bought mid-field Brisbane-based V8 Supercar outfit Briggs Motorsport and their two Ford Falcons partway through the 2003 season. ™

“In 2003 I became pretty bored of the BTCC and frankly I still am,” reflects Dane. “We had won many titles and I wanted a new challenge and I saw an opportunity to do something in Australia and so I decided to start Triple Eight Australia. There was, and it continues today, more public

2003 awareness of V8 Supercars than there is compared to any other touring car series in the world.” Signing the papers with Briggs on September 1, Triple Eight’s first official appearance as a V8 Supercars came at the 2003 Sandown 500. In what would prove a familiar trait of fielding internationals in the coming years, the lead Paul Radisich car was co-driven by BTCC star Rickard Rydell. The remainder of the year proved to be a struggle but by 2004, now armed with the first of its in-house Ludo Lacroix-designed chassis, a beacon of light began to appear. Radisich delivered two podiums during the season, showing that the cars could be fast, if somewhat fragile. The following season saw the arrival of former factory Holden and then Ford golden boy Craig Lowndes. The move provided instantly successful with six race wins and a victory at the Sandown 500, en route to finishing runner up in the 2005 championship. Triple Eight then unearthed a gem with a young Jamie Whincup joining Lowndes in 2006. Relatively unproven in V8 Supercars, the former Australian Formula Ford Champion had shown a glimpse of his potential with a classy drive to second in the previous year’s Bathurst 1000 alongside Jason Richards at Tasman Motorsport.
Dane had earmarked Whincup as the perfect co-driver for Lowndes, and so it proved, with the pair scooping the coveted Bathurst crown at their first attempt together. Lowndes again missed out on the championship, however, after an explosive finale that saw contact with eventual champion Rick Kelly. Success continued in 2007 as it welcomed a new title partner, telecommunications giant Vodafone, in place of the now defunct Betta Electrical. The team grabbed more wins than anybody else while defending their Bathurst title, as Whincup and Lowndes finished second and third in the championship. Whincup eventually delivered Triple Eight’s first championship the following year along with the famous Bathurst ‘threepeat’. Once up and running the Triple Eight carried their momentum and bulldozed the opposition in 2009 with Whincup cruising to a second title as the team scooped 15 race wins with its new FG Falcon. Even a change of manufacturers, triggered by a staggering decision from Ford to cut the team’s funding at the end of 2008, didn’t halt the team’s progress. Moving from Ford to Holden for 2010 yielded wins first-time out at Abu Dhabi. A fourth Bathurst crown followed this time an iconic 1-2 for the squad headed by Lowndes and Mark Skaife.

Reliability, however, ultimately cost Whincup and the team the championship after a season-long fight with Triple Eight customer Dick Johnson Racing and its star driver James Courtney. The last two seasons has seen the domination continue with two more championships for Whincup. Last year proved to be their most impressive season, winning 19 from 32 races, including conquering Mount Panorama for a fifth time. Dane is immensely proud of what he and his team have achieved over the last 10 years and has earmarked a few memories from the squad’s meteoric rise to fame. “There are three highlights which stick out for me. Winning Bathurst for the first time is one then winning our first race with Holden in Abu Dhabi and winning Bathurst with a 1-2 in 2010. These are things which very few people have achieved in the sport here. “We have won Bathurst five times in ten years and there have been people trying to win that race all their lives and fail to do so. For me it is the greatest touring car race there is and at one of the greatest tracks there is in the world. It’s a very special event and achievement.” It hasn’t been plain sailing for the squad this year, however, as they bid to grasp

Whincup remains at the top of the tree in the championship with Lowndes close behind in fourth, but the team has not experienced the complete dominance it once possessed. Although 2013 has seen them chalk up their 100th race win and help Lowndes become the most successful driver in the championship’s history, the competition is proving formidable. “I wouldn’t say this has been our toughest season so far but by the same token it is as hard as any we have experienced, as competition is high and everyone is trying to understand the cars”, Dane added. Adding to the challenge of the new regulations, the team has been rocked by the surprise departure of team principal Adrian Burgess after being poached by bitter rivals Holden Racing Team. This has forced Dane to take up the team principal role once again while he looks for a replacement for the outgoing Burgess.

Dane adds: “Motorsport around the world has an inherent fragility about it as it is linked to economic conditions, so who knows what the future holds, but I’d like to think that the team is well placed to have a solid future.” This weekend see the team’s co-drivers, Paul Dumbrell and Warren Luff, reunite with regulars Whincup and Lowndes respectively for a second consecutive year.

raig Lowndes could make history at this year’s Wilson Security Sandown 500 and equal the late, great Peter Brock’s record of nine wins in the annual pre-Bathurst endurance race. Brock won all nine of his races at Sandown, though Lowndes has won his across the three different venues that have hosted the annual 500-kilometre race in the V8 Supercar era. He’s clocked up five wins at Sandown (1996, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2012), two at Phillip Island (2010, 2011) and one at Queensland Raceway (2000). Lowndes, who sits fourth in the V8 Supercars Championship after a 25-point penalty post-Winton, has an amazing record in the ‘500. He’s finished on the podium in the last eight ‘500s straight since 2005 and all up has collected an outstanding 13 podiums from his last 17 starts in the ‘500 with eight wins, three runner-up finishes and a pair of third places. With five Sandown 500 wins he sits third only to Brock (nine) and Allan Moffat (six) on the list of drivers to have won the Sandown endurance classic.
R
eliability, more than ever in the 20-year history of the current five-litre V8 Supercar technical rulebook, could become a major factor in determining the winner of the Wilson Security Sandown 500. The fact all 28 cars on the grid at Sandown will be competing in their first endurance race since debuting at the beginning of the season could throw up some surprise results. The bulletproof nature and long-time development of the previous generation of cars resulted in a finishing rate of 97% over the three previous ‘500s at Phillip Island and Sandown (2010-2012) with all 28 cars finishing in 2011. In fact, the last time a car retired from the ‘500 due to a mechanical problem was back in 2010! Over the last 10 ‘500s since 2003, the finishing rate has been an impressive 84%. History shows that the introduction of new machinery and rules sees the reliability rates fall. The finishing rate in 1985 at Sandown (the first year of Group A rules) was 56% and in 1993 (the first year of fivelitre V8 rules now known as V8 Supercars), the rate was 52%. Both had different elements affecting them - the former was on the tight infield circuit and the latter was not purely a field of V8s - but the fact remains that this year’s race could pan out very differently from those of the recent past.

he fight for the V8 Supercars Championship is tight with just 72 points covering the top four drivers heading into the first of three events that count towards the Pirtek Enduro Cup.

Jamie Whincup heads Will Davison by just 55 points with Mark Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes within striking distance. Last year the same four drivers were also in the top four of the championship but were separated by 154 points, while in 2011 the top four drivers (Whincup, Lowndes,
Shane van Gisbergen and Rick Kelly) were separated by a massive 477 points heading into the first endurance event. There are far more players in the championship battle in 2013 with 245 points - less than one weekend of racing (300 points are available at every V8 Supercars Championship event) covering leader Whincup through to ninth-placed Garth Tander. At the same time last year a whopping 952 points covered the top nine drivers in the championship

issan Motorsport’s Altimas and Erebus Motorsport V8’s Mercedes-Benz AMG E63s will bring a new flavour to the V8 Supercar endurance races this year.
The former has great history in the Wilson Security Sandown 500 with four wins in the Group A era of the 1980s and 1990s. They won their first two back-to-back in 1986 and 1987 with George Fury pairing with Glenn Seton and Terry Shiel respectively in Skyline Turbos. Mark Skaife scored his first major touring car win alongside Jim Richards in a Skyline GTS-R in 1989, while GIO privateer combination Mark Gibbs and Rohan Onslow won the 1991 race in their mighty GT-R.

On the flipside, Mercedes-Benz machines have limited history in the Melbourne endurance classic with just four starts in the race, the first coming in the inaugural race in 1964 and the last in 1988, some 25 years ago. Aussie racing legend Kevin Bartlett and Pedro Owen drove a 220SE to 15th overall and second in class in the Six Hour race in 1964, while Phil Ward and David Clement failed to finish in a 190E in the 1988 Enzed 500.

welve different winners from the season’s opening 27 races leaves a tantalising Sandown 500 ahead. Although the increase in variables that comes with endurance racing could be thought likely to throw this weekend’s result even more wide open, history suggests that the powerhouse squads assert their authority on the biggest stages. Red Bull Racing Australia, Ford Performance Racing and the Holden Racing Team each have formidable driving line-ups to go with their recent runs on the board. Jaime Whincup’s partner Paul Dumbrell appeared the strongest of the co-drivers last year, although another season out of a fulltime drive will test his mettle. The pick of this year’s combinations is arguably FPR’s Will Davison/Steve Owen line-up, with the experienced Owen
boosted by time in MW Motorsport’s 2012specification FPR Ford in recent Dunlop Series events. Davison endured a shocking run through Sandown and Bathurst last year, but could be poised for a breakthrough. Of the rest, Garry Rogers Motorsport’s pairing of Scott McLaughlin/Jack Perkins is perhaps best placed to spring an upset, while Brad Jones Racing’s entries should also contend.
Safety Cars will have to fall in the favour of Erebus or Nissan for either to truly figure in the results due to their fuel consumption issues. Nissan, in truth, would likely have struggled anyway at Sandown, with the long straights set to really test the Altima’s engine performance. With reliability threatening to prove a major wildcard for all teams, nothing will be certain until the chequered flag.
