The stories within The drivers’ and teams’ championship may have both been wrapped up at Winton, but there’s still plenty to play for at this weekend’s Sydney Telstra 500.

The list of ‘last times’ within the paddock is quite extensive - headlined of course by the end of the 20 year reign for the current technical regulations. As a direct result, Kelly Racing is farewelling Holden in favour of Nissan, while Stone Brothers Racing bids goodbye to Ford and its traditional ‘Ross and Jimmy’ front-line ahead of its future with Mercedes, AMG and Erebus. Quite co-incidentally, there’s also plenty of change for the top teams that aren’t switching manufacturers, as the title sponsors of Triple Eight (Vodafone), Ford Performance Racing (Orrcon Steel and Trading Post) and Dick Johnson Racing (Jim Beam) all depart. The impending post-season driver movements see Michael Caruso suiting up with GRM for the final time after a five-year stint, Greg Murphy ready to exit Kelly Racing and perhaps full-time driving, and Shane van Gisbergen departing - for now at least - SBR, V8 Supercars and Australia in general. All will be very keen to end their current associations on a positive note, setting up an exciting and potentially emotion charged weekend. One thing that isn’t about to come to an end, however, is the Ford versus Holden rivalry. Despite the marketing hype surrounding this weekend, one can expect Triple Eight and FPR - which are on the verge of going through a complete season sharing all of the race wins - to be scrapping it out for the 2013 title as others find their collective feat. On the points from this weekend, the battle for second between Mark Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes, for fifth between van Gisbergen and Tim Slade, and for 10th between Fabian Coulthard, James Courtney and Russell Ingall will all be ones to watch. Meanwhile, some of the less high profile battles will have greater consequences, such as that between the current 22nd and 23rd placed drivers James Moffat and Tony D’Alberto, whose results will set the pit garage positions for FPR and HRT/Walkinshaw Racing next season respectively. Whincup’s recent dominance may have robbed V8 Supercars of the grandstand finale it was hoping for, but for the more educated fans, there’ll still be plenty to keep up with...

Last Blast Eras set to end at Sydney Telstra 500
T
his weekend’s season finale in Homebush marks the end of an era in many ways for V8 Supercars and its teams. Not only will next season see the introduction of the Car of the Future regulations, bringing the Nissan and Mercedes brands into the sport, for many there will be new title sponsors, too. The success of Triple Eight in recent times has not made it exempt from the sponsor shuffling, with Vodafone announcing mid-
season that it would soon end its six-year association. After the reveal of the team’s ‘farewell’ weekend livery, Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke to Triple Eight principal Roland Dane about the highs, lows and future of his squad. SPEEDCAFE: This weekend will see your six-year sponsorship from Vodafone come to an end. It has been a massively successful period under the
TeamVodafone banner. Any emotion ahead of the weekend? ROLAND DANE: Yeah, I do have, but frankly, I think about the past nine years as well. Continued on page 6 >>

But it has been pertinent over the last six years with the association with Vodafone. It has been outstanding from our point of view, and they tell me it has been a success from them too, in terms of what we set out to do with their backing and what we were able to deliver them. SPEEDCAFE: In the past six years, your team has won almost half of the races, including four Bathurst 1000s and four championships. Can you pick out your highlights and lowlights during the period? DANE: I can give you two of the best and two of the worst. Both of the bests were in 2010. Rolling out in our first race in Holdens and having a one-two result. We followed that up with the one-two result at Bathurst. For the team, they were the two best things we did.
The two lowest points for me were where we made a couple of silly mistakes. One was in 2007 at Eastern Creek where we ran the wrong brake rotors on Jamie’s car, which ultimately cost him the championship. The other was failing to win Bathurst in 2009. There were some fairly silly errors that contributed to both of those incidents. SPEEDCAFE: Vodafone has contributed a great deal – not only to your team, but to the sport as a whole, through the credibility of its brand and its activation … DANE: Totally. Vodafone has done a huge amount for the sport. They’ve put a lot in and taken a lot out. They’ve delivered a lot of credibility to the sport, especially when they first came in, and everyone benefited from that. In terms of activations – whether it was the interactions with the McLaren Formula 1
team, or bringing the sponsorship to life in Townsville with the tank race and the camo gear, or the pitstop stunt in the middle of Brisbane, plus various other things, they’ve only been possible because of the support they’ve given us. Vodafone has, effectively, had a full-time V8 Supercar sitting in our workshop, waiting to be called upon for these types of events. That’s a measure of the support that they have given us, and it has played out as a benefit for both of us, and the category. SPEEDCAFE: Vodafone was definitely behind some wild stunts, from giant rubber duck races to lawn mower races to your V8 drivers steering Formula 1 cars. There was one stunt, however, that didn’t quite come off – Jenson Button driving a V8 Supercar as a wildcard entry at the Sydney Telstra 500. I don’t think this ever got reported. Can you tell us how close this came to fruition?

DANE: We had one or two high speculative conversations about wildcards. Ultimately, it didn’t go anywhere. We talked about the idea of running the odd big name, but it never materialised for whatever reason. It would have been nice to have been able to do something outrageous on that level, but I’m still pretty happy with what we’ve been able to do. The highlight of Vodafone’s activations was Craig and Jenson driving a Formula 1 car at Bathurst. Jenson had a lot of fun in both the F1 car and a V8 Supercar around a track like that. Races 29/30 - Homebush I Cover Story Red Bull – another massive international brand. When will we start to see your team’s deal with Red Bull come to life? DANE: You won’t see any evidence of the Red Bull involvement before next year. It will roll out at some point in the new year. You’ll see what we’re doing with new title sponsors and our existing ones. SPEEDCAFE: Red Bull and Vodafone are different companies in different markets, but they both like to activate on their sponsorships. Should we be prepared for even more stunts next year and beyond? DANE: I think you should be prepared for an exciting ride. If you asked someone six
years ago ‘Who are the two most prolific sports sponsors with the most amount of engagement and activation in the world?’ the answer would be Vodafone and Red Bull. Certainly, Red Bull has been consistent over the years with a huge amount of activations over the years, so I’m very fortunately to have had a relationship with both of them. I’m sure we’ll have a great relationship with Red Bull, and at the same time, we’ve got a massive common denominator sitting behind us, which is GM Holden. You can’t talk about our success in the past three years without mentioning the support of Holden as well.

T
he races at the Sydney Telstra 500 have traditionally been pretty unpredictable. It obviously punished mistakes from drivers, but the teams have to have their wits about them with strategy because the Safety Cars have such a big impact. A 250km race around there has very tight fuel windows, but the full-course yellows mean that making it through on two stops isn’t necessarily the right way to go. You can get back into contention with the right Safety Car timing and the fuel-inhand gained through a three-stopper very easily. There was some weird and wonderful stuff that happened last year and picking when to pit is like flipping a coin half the time. We’ve seen teams taking each-way bets by calling one of their two cars to the pits under early Safety Cars several times this year, which can get rid of the pit stacking problem. The pitlane can get quite congested in Sydney and the transit time is quite long as well, which is something that always needs to be factored in.
The communication is quite poor too. We’ve had lots of radio issues there in the past, so that adds to the challenge. Hopefully we don’t have a repeat of the Gold Coast in that respect. I think we’ll be turning our radio off for the Top 10 Shootout! Arguably the main issue here with choosing when to pit is what sort of traffic you’ll find yourself in once you come back out again. It’s a very easy place to block so one slow car will tend to create a big long caterpillar behind it. We saw that happen a lot last year. It’s worse than Winton in that respect. Brakes Brakes are a big issue here due to the nature of the layout, which is why being in traffic can be so damaging. Two laps stuck in behind another car can fry them completely.

All the brake temperature happens in Turns 1 and 2, which are the two places you can pass.
As long as there’s no changes from last year I don’t think you’ll hear any complaints.
The only cars that were really able to overtake at Turn 9 last year were the Triple Eight cars, as well as the #55. It’s very high risk down there.

We’d seen a bit of track breakup in the first couple of years of this event but the patching they put into it last year seemed to work quite well.
I don’t think the kerbing will have changed from last year so we’re fairly used to it how punishing they are now.
I don’t know what it’ll be like in the rain though and there’s a good chance of seeing at least one wet race over the weekend.
Last year they had a sensor in Turn 3 that they turned off after Friday practice. There were a few issues in Turns 6 and 7 with people hitting tyre bundles but you can only hope that we’ve all learnt from that.
If it’s anything like the Formula 1 finale last weekend a bit of water on the track will make it very entertaining for everyone!

amie Whincup may have all but collected the champion’s trophy, but the fact still remains that the Sydney Telstra 500 is a bogey track for the champ-elect. Whincup has never won at Sydney Olympic Park and has a best finish of fifth - twice. The circuit remains the only one on the 2012 schedule where Whincup has never won a race. He’s crashed in two of the six races and has an average finishing position of 10.4 with one DNF. Qualifying has never been too much of a problem for Whincup, lining up in the top three on the grid in four of the six Sydney races held so far with an average qualifying position of 6.8. This is slightly lower than it otherwise would be due to Whincup having an engine misfire in Sunday qualifying in 2009.

n its short three year history, the Sydney Telstra 500 has become one of the most unpredictable events on the V8 Supercars Championship calendar. There is yet to be a repeat race winner with wins shared between Garth Tander, James Courtney, Jonathon Webb, Lee Holdsworth, Craig Lowndes and Mark Winterbottom. Dick Johnson Racing is the only team to have won multiple races with Courtney in 2009 and Webb in 2010. A total of 13 different drivers have finished on the 18 podium positions available in the six races held at Sydney Olympic Park. And the 3.42-kilometre street circuit claims cars with a hunger the average finishing rate is just 65.7% of starters with the most finishers being 23 cars in the Sunday race in 2010. The average number of cars on the lead lap at the finish is 14.7.
T
he Sydney Telstra 500 is the end of an era for V8 Supercars and will be the last exclusively Holden versus Ford fight in the foreseeable future prior to Car of the Future regulations coming online for 2013. The current Holden/Ford five-litre rulebook was introduced in 1993 and rebranded as V8 Supercars in 1997. In that time there have been 566 Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship races. Holden will have claimed 11 championships to Ford’s nine during the course of the 20 years once Whincup is crowned champion in Sydney, while Holden have won 349 races to Ford’s 217. The Commodore VE/VE II is the most successful car with 103 race wins over its six seasons in competition. The Falcon BA, which completed four seasons, is the best of the Fords with 51. Holden has claimed 167 pole positions to Ford’s 130 and also has had more fastest laps (325 to Ford’s 241) and podium finishes (501 to Ford’s 394). A total of 309 Falcon and Commodore chassis have raced under the current rulebook from 1993 onwards. The final race in Sydney is the 800th in ATCC/V8SC history since the first race was held in 1960.

ujitsu Racing/GRMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Michael Caruso may not have won a race yet at Sydney Olympic Park, but he has been the most consistent driver over the three years of the event. Caruso, who is making his final start with the Garry Rogers-owned team after five years with the Melbourne-based squad, is one of only three drivers to have finished every race at the Sydney Telstra 500. The 2009 Sunday runnerup has never finished outside the top eight in the six races held and has a finishing average of 5.3.
W
hile the V8 Supercars Championship is all but officially decided, the fight for the Dunlop Series is the tightest in its history. Scott McLaughlin leads heading into the final round by just 32 points over Nick Percat - who has won the last two rounds at Bathurst and Winton - while a 50 championship point penalty from Winton has dropped Chaz Mostert to third clear of Scott Pye. A total of just 82 points separates the top four with 300 points on the line.

Although the Walkinshaw Racing entries again struggled for outright pace last time out at Winton, Garth Tander looms as a podium dark horse this weekend. The 2007 champion has performed strongly on the streets circuit in Adelaide, Hamilton, Townsville and the Gold Coast so far this year, taking all four of his podium finishes on the temporary circuits. His car also relishes the hard tyres. Team-mate James Courtney has happy memories of this venue thanks to his 2009 race win and 2010 title success and needs a solid weekend to bridge the 80 point gap to Fabian Coulthard for 10th in points.

The factory Fords set the pace around Sydney Olympic Park last year, with Mark Winterbottom winning Sunday’s race. Winterbottom and Davison loom as Whincup’s two biggest challengers for the races, while the latter will also be looking to wrap up the season pole award - currently sitting one ahead of Whincup with two sessions remaining.

Brad Jones Racing again showed it’s not afraid to roll the strategy dice last time out at Winton, running an aggressive three-stop program in Race 28 for both Jason Bright and Fabian Coulthard that netted the former his first top six finish in 17 races. That sort of alternative thinking could again shoot this team into contention for top placings in Sydney - an event where tight fuel windows can reward the brave. Coulthard and David Wall meanwhile will be hoping to avoid the sort of friendly fire that saw the Lockwood entry sent spinning in the early stages of Winton’s Sunday encounter.

Currently separated by just 12 points and one position, Moffat and Owen will be fighting an intra-team battle to avoid being the lowest placed DJR entry in the championship standings.

Although a repeat of his Gold Coast podium will be a tall order, qualifying and racing in the top 10 can be expected.
