Frosty’s career defining moment

fter 33 races spanning the length and breadth of Australia, the scene is now set to crown a new V8 Supercars champion. Two protagonists remain following an eventful Phillip Island Super Sprint which has seen Mark Winterbottom’s lead cut to 179 points following a strong showing from title rival Craig Lowndes. With 300 points up fro grabs, Frosty is rapidly closing in on securing a breakthrough championship with the Prodrive driver only needing to finish 14th across the three races to achieve a life-long ambition. Pressure has been mounting on Winterbottom as he approaches the most important racing week-end of his career having seen his championship lead whittled down to 179 points. While the pressure of being on the verge of winning the most coveted championship in Australian motorsport exists, Frosty says the anxiety will subside once he gets behind the wheel. “I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Winterbottom. “There’s pressure, there’s lots of things going on, but when you get in that car it’s all going to relax. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s hopefully going to be a good weekend, but there’s a lot at stake. It’s a massive weekend.” Although the odds are in his favour, Sydney has a habit of throwing up an unpredictable result virtue of the
circuit’s punishing nature and often changeable weather conditions. As a result, Lowndes has a slim since of pulling off one of the most impressive title fightback having been 423 points adrift following Sandown. It is a tall order with Lowndes requiring to pocket at least 30 points more than Winterbottom across the two 125km races to lower the margin to 149 points, with 150 to be won on the Sunday. Whatever the result the final round of the season is sure to provide a thrilling climax to the year. The Coates Hire Sydney 500 will also see the Dunlop Series title decided with Cameron Waters the favourite to take the crown in his Prodrive Falcon. A fierce battle is expected for the V8 Utes Racing Series crown with Ryal Harris holding a 85 points over George Miedecke, with Adam Marjoram a further 12 points back in third. The support line up is completed by the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship and the Aussie Racing Cars. Making a debut event appearance are the popular Stadium Super Trucks, who are set to entertain the crowds with their spectacular on track antics.

Picking a race winner is 6 tricky at Sydney Olympic Park as nine different drivers have won the 13 races held there. The only multiple winners are Jamie Whincup (three), Craig Lowndes and Shane van Gisbergen (two each).
Pole-sitters are even harder to 7 predict, with eight different teams earning the last eight poles at the venue. Since Will Davison took pole on Sunday in 2011 for FPR (now Prodrive), the next seven poles have been taken by Stone Brothers Racing, Holden Racing Team, Triple Eight, TEKNO Autosports, Erebus Motorsport V8, Brad Jones Racing and Garry Rogers Motorsport.
Claiming pole position at Sydney 8 Olympic Park is no guarantee of success – only four times in 13 races has the pole-sitter converted it into a race victory. Races can be won from nearly anywhere on the grid; Jonathon Webb started 21st to win a wild wet race on Saturday in 2010, Craig Lowndes started 16th and still won on Saturday in 2012 and he also started 10th to claim victory on Saturday in 2011. All 13 races at Sydney 10 Olympic Park have featured at least one Safety Car No Sydney 500 V8 Supercars race has been decided by a margin 9 bigger than four seconds. The ‘biggest’ winning margin is 3.9087s from James Courtney to Michael Caruso on Sunday in 2009. The closest finishing margin is 0.6375s from Jonathon Webb to Jason Bright on Saturday in 2010.

Foxtel will televise every practice, qualifying and race live through its Fox Sport channels.
