Russell-ing up the numbers Many words have been written, and even more said, about Russell Ingall over the years, but if there is one that sums up his V8 Supercars career, it’s enduring. This weekend marks the latest in a series of milestones for Ingall as the Gold Coast based driver moves to second on the all-time Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercars Championship event starts list. A 221st appearance pulls the Supercheap Auto Holden driver one clear of former on-track adversary Mark Skaife, and within four of the record holder himself, John Bowe. Ingall is now in his 18th and final season of V8 Supercars competition having started his full-time career as part of an expanded Perkins Engineering stable in 1996. With Bathurst having become a V8 Supercars Championship round just a few years later, the fact that Ingall had won Bathurst before making his first championship start now sits as a curious anomaly. Although Ingall is highly unlikely to add to his two Bathurst victories or single title success this year, the season opener in Adelaide last month proved that his retirement tour isn’t only about selling t-shirts. Fourth in points after the Clipsal 500 is a commendable achievement for a man who has not finished the year in the top six since his triumphant 2005 campaign. V8 Supercars’ decision to move towards sprint race formats for much of the season will inevitably make life tough for Ingall this year, however, as the increased emphasis on qualifying plays directly to his greatest weakness. Let’s see what the veteran is capable of producing this weekend...

The Sprint Showd V8 Supercars field set to tackle rapid fire format

T

he V8 Supercars Championship’s latest race format will debut at Symmons Plains this weekend, with the category talking up the chances that action-packed racing is on the cards.

for each race decided by two 15 minute morning qualifying sessions. The rapid-fire format is a dramatic departure away from the string of 120km Saturday and 200km Sunday events of the last couple of years. No refuelling and only one tyre compound to chose from (soft) puts strategy pretty well out of the equation.

sreFor ntthose rapunaware munofitthe alchanges, p duorp ruO a ‘Super Sprint’ or ‘60/60’ race on the Saturday will see two 60km ‘legs’ separated by a 15 minute service window. The first leg will feature a standing start, with grid positions based off of qualifying order, while the second will see a double-file rolling restart in the order that the cars finished the first. ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

Whether this leaves us with racing that’s laden with on-track overtaking or a quartet of processions remains unclear.

Teams are able to work on their cars during the service window, which includes adding fuel, changing tyres, making set-up changes and effecting repairs.

There will be five other events run to the same format later in the season, but you can bet that fans, particularly those that share their opinions over the internet, won’t be waiting long before forming their opinions.

Two rather more traditional 100km encounters will then complete the weekend on Sunday, with grid positions

Regardless, the return to shorter races is something that several drivers, including Nissan Motorsport owner/driver and V8 Supercars Commission member Todd Kelly, have expressed a clear enthusiasm for.

“All it’s about is getting in the car and going out there and racing as hard as you can from when the lights go off, until when you get the chequered flag,” he says. “You don’t have to worry about strategy or refuelling, it’s really down to the driver and less about the team and what they do in the garage. “It’s about looking after your tyres managing your own race and going out there and driving as hard as you possibly can for the duration of it, which is very similar to how the formats were when I started in V8 Supercars, so I can’t wait to get out there and rub a few panels.”

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

On the subject of rubbing panels, the double-file restart for the second 60km Saturday leg has undoubtedly been the biggest talking point of the format since it was announced late last year. ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

Initially proposed for all Safety Car restarts before the damage-wary teams revolted, just how 14 rows of two-by-two will head into the tight Turns 1-2 complex at Symmons will be the source of some nerves down pitlane. “I’m not sure how the double file re-starts will go, especially at Symmons Plains where the front straight is like one big corner and

www.speedcafe.com

9

not a whole lot of room to manoeuvre into turn one and two,” says Norton-backed Nissan Motorsport pilot James Moffat, who has proven not afraid of banging panels in the mid-pack since making his V8 Supercars Championship debut in 2011. “That could provide some action, but hopefully we’re in front of that.” “It’s going to be really interesting,” adds IRWIN Racing’s Lee Holdsworth of the restarts. “Obviously you’ve got to keep out of trouble in the first 60km race so the boys don’t have too much work in the break. Having a straight car for the second half is going to be very important.”

It should be underlined too that having a straight car at the end of the weekend will be just as important for the teams, who face a tight turnaround in order to have their cars back on the ferry to Melbourne, and subsequently on the plane to New Zealand, ahead of the Pukekohe meeting the following weekend. That event, like its international counterpart in Austin, Texas, will feature four pitstop-less 100km sprints as a further extension of V8 Supercars’ new-found love for the short and the sharp. The race formats may seemingly be

changed on a whim every few seasons, but we are assured that much analysis goes into such matters through V8 Supercars’ Skaife-led Commission. The Commission has continued to fiddle with the details of the year’s formats, most notably the tyre allocation, over the last few weeks as they try to find a balance between maximising entertainment for fans and minimising costs to teams, where possible. We can only hope that the category has it right, as the medium term cost of unexciting races could be far greater than merely a few sets of tyres.

Supercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall, who will surpass Mark Skaife for second on the all-time Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship starts list this weekend, says only time will tell as to the impact of the restart rules. “Everyone wants to be an expert, but we won’t know until we’ve tried it out,” he notes. “The double-file rolling start for the second part of the race could actually be safer than a standing start, because it eliminates the chances of a car stalling on the grid.”

Symmons Plains International Raceway Circuit Overview Location: Symmons Plains, Launceston, TAS Length: 2.4-kilometres Direction: Anti-clockwise Average speed: 170km/h Maximum speed: 270km/h Fastest Point: Back Straight Slowest Point: Turn 4 Hairpin Circuit Description The shortest on the V8 Supercars calendar, the Symmons Plains circuit provides two strong passing opportunities (Turn 4 and Turn 6), in addition to a complex opening sequence of corners (Turns 1-2) that often sees even Australia’s best drivers come unstuck. The surface is relatively smooth and high-grip, while strong braking and power-down characteristics are rewarded. This year marks the 41st occasion in which the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship visits Symmons Plains Raceway. The track hosted the championship for 30 consecutive years prior to a four year absence beginning in 2000.

ed Bull Racing Australia’s Craig Lowndes leads the V8 Supercars Championship by 12 points over teammate Jamie Whincup - but it’s the team’s record at Symmons Plains that should also have their rivals nervy heading into Races 3, 4 and 5. The duo have combined to win nine of the last 14 races at the Tasmanian circuit since 2007 with Whincup scooping eight and Lowndes one. Whincup has won more championship races at Symmons Plains than any other drivers, his eight race wins moving him clear of Peter Brock and Garth Tander on seven apiece.

issan will make its first ATCC/V8SC appearance at Symmons Plains since 1992 at a track that holds great history for the Japanese manufacturer.

George Fury won the 1987 round in a Nissan Skyline DR30 (and also took pole position in 1986), while Jim Richards won in 1991 from pole position aboard the mighty Nissan GT-R. The best Nissan Altima in the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship is Rick Kelly, who sits 11th in the points after the Clipsal 500. The 2006 V8 Supercar champion hasn’t had much luck in Tasmania in recent years though - he hasn’t finished in the top 10 in a race there since 2008.

Races 3/4/5 - Symmons Plains I Team Profiles

14

The Bagman says... We’ve seen the field run together on three different circuits now with their 2013specification equipment, and five drivers have undoubtedly stood above the rest. Red Bull Racing Australia duo Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, Brad Jones Racing’s Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright, and the lead Tekno Autosports entry of Shane van Gisbergen have all sprung out of the blocks with promising speed. The Red Bull entries can only be expected to be stronger at Symmons Plains after a recent test. As with many circuits, the squad has the runs on the board here in recent years too. Not since 2006 have the Banyo boys left Tasmania without accruing at least one race victory. With BJR, and particularly Coulthard, having shown phenomenal speed on the soft tyres at Albert Park, the Albury-based squad may well be considered stiff if it does not head to Tassie as the favourite.

Van Gisbergen’s form suggests Coulthard won’t be the only Kiwi right in the mix though, with the Tekno driver a very strong bet should weather come into play. The winner is highly likely to come from those five Holdens, but picking a standout between them is night on impossible. Of the rest, don’t completely discount Ford Performance Racing’s chances of mounting the top step of the dais. Although not on the ultimate pace with the soft tyre at Albert Park, Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison were top five runners in

Adelaide. The team also enjoyed a strong Symmons record with its previous equipment. David Reynolds is theoretically as big a threat as his FPR stable-mates nowdays, although he’ll need to qualify better if he’s expecting to see the top half-dozen here. Plenty of work has gone into the Nissan and Mercedes packages since Albert Park, but both remain underdone in the horsepower department, and will be hard pressed to star. Any of the four Nissans could end up in the top 10 at the end of the weekend, however, should they put in a consistent performance.
