VOLVOLUTION Can Volvo and McLaughlin contend for 2014 title?

Viking power

olvo has become a brand of envy since aligning itself to Garry Rogers Motorsport. In every sense, the Volvo S60 spearheaded by young Scott McLaughlin has started life in V8 Supercars as a serious contender. The #33 claimed victory in only its seventh race in the category at the fourth and final nonchampionship heat at the Melbourne Grand Prix. Ever since McLaughlin’s ‘F$#k yeah’ moment in the second race of the year in Adelaide when he claimed second place, the Garry Rogers operation has looked like serious contenders. The prospects for GRM have not looked as bright since they took Bathurst and finished second in the championship in 2000. In the years since, there have been flashes of performance here and there but never enough to warrant being considered a race-to-race threat. Times have changed with the S60 producing enough engine performance and downforce to cut it

www.speedcafe.com

against the best in the business. And all this has been achieved without any proper pre-season running in the car with the Yamahasourced B8444S engine under the bonnet. Based on performances so far both in qualifying and race pace, it would be folly to suggest Volvo Polestar Racing will not continue its stunning V8 Supercars form at Symmons Plains this weekend.

Jamie Whincup favourite to claim victory in Race 4 E

arly markets for Race four of the V8 Supercars Championship have Red Bull champion Jamie Whincup a clear-cut favorite. Although Whincup claimed victory in the opening championship race of the year in Adelaide, he has endured a tenuous start to his campaign including the nonchampionship races at the Melbourne Grand Prix. Despite this Whincup is rated at $3.75 to take victory in the opening race at the tight Symmons Plains circuit near Launceston. His Red Bull team-mate Craig Lowndes, who won the second race on the streets of Adelaide when he kept Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin at bay, is on the second line at $5. Following on from his devastating form at the non-championship Melbourne GP meeting where he took three wins from the four races, Shane van Gisbergen is at $6. Perhaps the best value bet for the 42-lap opener in Tassie is McLaughlin, whose Volvo Polestar Racing squad under chief Garry Rogers has been a revelation in the early months of the V8 debut of the S60s.

www.speedcafe.com

McLaughlin is a $7 chance at a track where the S60s strengths of raw straightline speed developed from its Yamaha-sourced V8 engine and its superior aero grip will come to the fore.

Other decent value runners appear to be the 2013 Symmons Plains double race winner Fabian Coulthard at $10 while the Sunday Clipsal winner, James Courtney is at the remarkably liberal odds of $15.

Volvolution

Can Volvo and McLaughlin contend for 2014 title? ts taken just two races for Scott McLaughlin to record Volvo’s first V8 Supercar podium in a stunning debut performance on the streets of Adelaide. After making such an impact on the sport with a second place at Clipsal, many are wondering what the duo can achieve this season. To challenge for the championship is a tall order for a driver competing in only his second full season and a manufacturer in its rookie year down under. However, the signs so far suggest McLaughlin and Volvo cannot be written off. Garry Rogers Motorsport in conjunction with Volvo’s performance arm Polestar have clearly produced a rapid car in the S60. The Volvo’s straightline speed has already sparked parity debates amongst V8 Supercars’ existing manufacturers, Holden,

I

Ford, Nissan and Erebus. The parity debate is understandable when you consider it took Nissan, aided by the E70 fuel, 25 races to score its first podium, while Erebus are yet to stand on the rostrum after some 39 races.

39 and counting

Volvo has passed V8 Supercars’ aero testing requirements, so on paper the car is not only legal in the eyes of the championship, but also quick. This was evident at the nonchampionship meeting at Albert Park two

weeks ago when McLaughlin gave Volvo its first V8 Supercar victory. The result provoked further questions regarding parity which were firmly answered by McLaughlin. “There is always going to be haters but bring it on,” McLaughlin said. “I am driving the thing as hard as I can and that’s what happens; we are going good. There’s always going to be doubters. “In regards to parity everyone has stepped up a lot over the off-season and I don’t think some of the other teams have. That’s what I reckon but I’m just a driver.” Following Volvo Polestar Racing’s historic first V8 Supercars victory, drivers McLaughlin and Robert Dahlgren flew direct to one of Volvo’s winter testing bases in Sweden to drive a number of Polestarengineered road cars on frozen lakes. Although the all new Polestar S60 has

which is a crucial part in winning titles. He has already put this into practice to earn his place on the V8 Supercar grid, after claiming the 2012 Dunlop Series crown. Although its extremely early days in terms of a championship tilt, McLaughlin has a simple but seemingly effective outlook on his season so far. “A lot of people didn’t count our win last year but this one counts. For us as a team its morale building and something you never forget,” he said. “I am only the guy between the steering

shown itself to be a force on the track particularly in the hands of McLaughlin, reliability issues cost the team valuable points at Adelaide. Rectifying these teething issues quickly will be imperative to any championship charge, an aspect Polestar boss Christian Dahl has already earmarked as the team’s next objective. While the car seems to have the potential to guide McLaughlin to the title, does the 20-year-old Kiwi posses the mettle required for a championship assault? Last season he burst onto the V8 Supercars scene quickly becoming the youngest race winner in the championship history, with a memorable win in front of his home crowd at Pukekohe. He followed that up with victory at Queensland Raceway which helped him secure 10th spot in the championship standings. But piecing together a championship is a vastly different prospect from scooping race wins. While McLaughlin is fresh faced and has plenty to learn in the sport, there is a maturity that belies his years underneath his happy go lucky persona. On the track, he rarely makes mistakes

wheel and the seat. I am just driving the car that they give me and its making me look good. I am trying to drive it, slide it and give it some jandal. So far it’s working pretty good.” After such jubilant scenes at Clipsal it will be interesting to see how Scott will attack this weekend’s races at Symmons Plains. He may be remembered for his display of raw emotion during that infamous “Jandal” post race interview at Adelaide, but behind the humour, Scott McLaughlin and Volvo could well be the story of 2014.

Circuit Description The shortest on the V8 Supercars calendar, the Symmons Plains circuit provides two strong passing opportunities (Turn 4 and Turn 6), in addition to a complex opening sequence of corners (Turns 1-2) that often sees even Australia’s best drivers come unstuck. The

surface is relatively smooth and high-grip, while strong braking and power-down characteristics are rewarded. This year marks the 42nd occasion in which the Australian Touring Car Championship/ V8 Supercars Championship visits Symmons Plains Raceway. The track hosted the championship for 30 consecutive years prior to a four year absence beginning in 2000. 2013 Highlights: Brad Jones Racing dominated the 2013 meeting with Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright enjoying trips to the top step of the podium. Volvo claimed its first V8 Supercar race win with Kiwi Scott McLaughlin in the recent non-championship event at Albert Park and history is also on its side for the trip to Tasmania.

Volvo claimed victory at Symmons Plains in both the 1985 and 1986 rounds of the Australian Touring Car Championship via McLaughlin’s countryman Robbie Francevic in his 240 Turbo. In 1985 he led home Dick Johnson’s Mustang and Jim Richards’ BMW 635, while in 1986 he led home George Fury’s Nissan Skyline and John Harvey’s Commodore. Last year McLaughlin finished eighth in all three races at Symmons Plains in a Commodore.

DID YOU KNOW

This year is the 45th anniversary of the first Australian Touring Car Championship event held at Symmons Plains in 1969.

The final round of five in that year’s championship, it was won by Hall of Famer Norm Beechey’s Monaro GTS 327 by just 0.3s over the Porsche 911S of Alan Hamilton, thereby denying the latter the championship which was won by the late Ian Geoghegan for the fifth time. This year is the 42nd time an ATCC/V8SC event has been held at Symmons Plains (there was no event between 2000 and 2003) with only Sandown (44) having hosted more.

3 4

Traditionally a strong starter, reigning V8 Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup arrives at Symmons Plains following his worst start to a championship assault in nine years.

Whincup sits seventh in the pointscore, 108 points behind leader and teammate Craig Lowndes. The Red Bull driver has sat in the top two in the championship after the opening event for seven of the last nine seasons (2006-2014).

The Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander will make his 212th Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship event start at Symmons Plains.

That ties him with the late Peter Brock for fifth on the all-time list and sits Tander behind only Russell Ingall, John Bowe, Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife on the list of most starts. The winner of seven V8 Supercar races at Symmons Plains, Tander will celebrate his 37th birthday on Monday March 31, the day after the Tyrepower Tasmania 400.

5

Pepsi Max Ford pilot Mark Winterbottom has a remarkably consistent record of performance at Symmons Plains in his eight years with Ford Performance Racing.

He may have only won one race (Sunday 2010) from 2006 onwards, but he’s finished an incredible 18 of those 20 races in the top five. Winterbottom has finished each and every one of the 26 V8 Supercar races he’s started at Symmons Plains since his debut in 2004. His qualifying form has been strong in Tasmania, claiming three pole positions with an average qualifying position of 3.6 in that period - better than any other driver in the field.

6

Lockwood Racing’s Fabian Coulthard has happy memories of Symmons Plains given he claimed his first V8 Supercars Championship race win there last year.

The Kiwi qualified his #14 Commodore second for all three races and claimed victory in Race 1 and Race 3 with a third place podium finish in between in Race 2. The #14’s Tasmanian success must have been an omen for the state’s AFL partners, the Hawthorn Football Club, given Tasmanian-born and raised Grant Birchall wore #14 in the team’s premiership success later in the year! Coulthard sits second in the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship after the opening event in Adelaide.

7 8 9 10

Norton Hornets driver Michael Caruso claimed both he and Nissan’s first V8 Supercars ARMOR ALL pole

srentraposition p muinnthe itarecent lp dunon-championship orp ruO event at Albert Park.

A Nissan has not had pole position for an ATCC/V8SC event since Mark Skaife at Winton in 1992, while Caruso’s best career V8SC qualifying performance remains second at Winton last year. ™

Three drivers - Robert Dahlgren, Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert - are making their first V8 Supercars Championship starts at Symmons Plains.

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

Percat won the Australian Formula Ford Championship round at the circuit in both 2008 and 2009 (his title-winning season) while Mostert won it in 2010 on the weekend he sealed the championship.

Jack Daniel’s Racing’s Rick Kelly sits fourth in the V8 Supercars Championship after the Clipsal 500 - the highest a Nissan driver has been in the ATCC/V8SC since Mark Skaife won the crown in a GT-R back in 1992.

Symmons Plains, however, has become something of a bogey track for Kelly in recent times given he has not finished in the top 10 in a race there since 2008 - a streak of 11 races.

Repair Management Australia Racing’s Russell Ingall is the most experienced V8 Supercar driver at Symmons Plains in the current field, making his 15th appearance there this year.

The overall round winner in 2004 (with finishes of 7th, 5th and 5th in the races that year!), Ingall has never actually won a V8 Supercar race at the Tasmanian circuit but finished second in the Saturday race in 2009.
