Crunch time for early achievers As the inaugural ‘Car of the Future’ V8 Supercars season draws towards its halfway point, question marks are starting to appear next to some of the teams that performed so strongly in the early races.
townsville EDITOR: Stefan Bartholomaeus ART DIRECTOR: Steven Neumann
Brad Jones Racing, for one, has arguably been the feel-good story of the season to date. Team-mates Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright have scored six of the opening 19 race wins between them, chalking up a combined 13 podiums, eight fastest laps and two pole positions along the way. Winless for 18 months prior to the start of the season, the team currently runs second in the Teams’ Championship - three places higher than it finished last year. It’s been an impressive turnaround that the team was quick to attribute to the ‘level playing field’ brought about by the new rule package. Failing to chalk up a top six finish with either car in Darwin was a worrying sign however that the likeable Albury lads risk falling back into the ferocious pack as their rivals develop their cars at a faster rate.
DESIGN: Kirstie Fuentes
Garry Rogers Motorsports too has undoubtedly lost momentum following its stellar start that included a fairytale race win for Scott McLaughlin on home soil in Pukekohe’s Race 7.
SALES/MARKETING: Leisa Emberson
This squad’s ability to quickly come to grips with the new regulations was particularly impressive considering it designed its own front-end in-house. BJR, by contrast, was one of several to do an IP deal with Triple Eight for its uprights and so on.
PARTNERS: Armor All Castrol Edge Coates Hire Crimsafe Dunlop Finance Ezi IRWIN OzSpeedShop Pirtek Proton
Looking at the slightly bigger picture for GRM, it would not be unheard of if the team’s recently announced Volvo-Polestar deal for 2014 sees its focus shift somewhat in the latter part of the campaign. With a resurgent Holden Racing Team and ever improving Nissan and Erebus Mercedes efforts set to push category heavyweights Triple Eight and Ford Performance Racing, it’s going to be very tough for these two privateer Holden squads to maintain their early form. For the sake of the category and its variety-hungry fans, we can only hope that such a prediction is proven wide of the mark.

aving been the determining factor for much of 2012, fuel has been a somewhat unspoken word during this year’s V8 Supercars Championship. A widespread change in race formats means that only six events will include in-race refuelling in 2013 and just one of those, the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, has been run to date. A large part of the reason why that move was made may well be on show this weekend as the economy of the newgeneration engines in the Nissan Altimas and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGs is put under the microscope during a pair of 200km encounters. In Adelaide the Nissans clearly lost ground as they required longer in-race refuelling time than their Ford and Holden rivals, while the Mercedes cars didn’t run cleanly enough to give a true fuel reading. Much time has passed since the first weekend in March, but both admit that they’re still struggling for economy, with increasing horsepower having been a very

understandable priority during the early stages of the season. Unlike recent races in Townsville that saw two-stops thanks to the 75 litre fuel tanks, one-stop strategies should be the default this year thanks to the 115 litre capacity of the new cars. The fact that two laps have been shaved from each race distance since last year should, in theory, allow all to make it home with one-stop.
Despite the fuel situation, Nissan’s Todd Kelly and Erebus AMG’s Lee Holdsworth are both confident their cars can be fighting inside the top 10 across the weekend. The duo are keen to emphasise the importance of tyre life, as well as fuel, under the race format, which sees both the hard and the soft required to be used in each race.

using them at the start of the finish proves the best option could well be determined by the intervention of the Safety Car. “We’re confident that we’ll be able to move forward at Townsville and continue the solid progress that made so far this year,” says Kelly ahead of the weekend after his team-mate and brother Rick’s fine fifth place finish on Saturday at Hidden Valley. “The track won’t knock us around as much as the long straight did at Darwin. “The longer race formats will also be interesting too. We haven’t had a fuel race since Clipsal, so this will give us a good indication of the progress we’ve been making.” “Strategy will play a huge part and you’re going to have to look after your tyres for the whole race,” adds Holdsworth, whose Erebus team, through Tim Slade, also enjoyed a season-best in Darwin. “If we qualify well I think we’ll be able to hold our ground now that we’ve got better engine power, but the heat does affect us a lot with our power. So we hope it won’t be too hot and we can race competitively and aim for top 10s in each race.” The threat of the Safety Car, which has been called into action in 75 percent of the Townsville races since the Reid Park street circuit joined the championship in 2009, is
of course something for more than just the new marques to consider. The boom sharing rules ensure all teams can be forced into double-stacking should the full course yellows fall at the wrong moment. It’s an issue that has hurt Triple Eight’s Craig Lowndes in Townsville before, and something that the #888 Red Bull Holden’s engineer Jeromy Moore is well aware could come back into play this weekend. “Without the fuel stops this year stacking in the pits hasn’t really been an issue and, if and when it does happen, you only lose four seconds for a tyre stop rather than 20 seconds for a fuel stop,” says Moore. “But we will be doing fuel stops in Townsville and with the new cars, it takes longer to fill the tank. So if you get stacked for a 25-second fuel stop, you’re effectively out of the race. “There’s a lot of pressure in every team to out-qualify your team-mate as pit lane priority is always given to whoever is higher up the order on track. It’s something we’ll be working very hard on.” With raw speed, tyre life and fuel economy on its side, Triple Eight are deserved favourites heading into the weekend. There are more than enough variables, however, to ensure it won’t be a walk in the park.

amie Whincup starts as favourite for the Sucrogen Townsville 400 and not simply because he’s the V8 Supercars Championship leader by 159 points over teammate Craig Lowndes. The Red Bull Racing Australia pilot has finished in the top two in seven of the eight races held in Townsville since the event began in 2009. Whincup has also led laps in seven of the eight races held in Townsville and has collected five race wins on the Reid Park layout - he’s the only multiple race winner in the event’s relatively short history. He’s also won races from lowly grid positions (twice from ninth on the grid and once from eighth), proving that he’s capable of racing his way through the field over 200-kilometres.
S
upercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall will make his 226th ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship event start in Townsville, officially breaking John Bowe’s record of most starts in the history of the championship. Ingall made 82 starts with Perkins Engineering (19962002), 66 with Stone Brothers Racing (2003-2007), 56 with Paul Morris Motorsport (2008-2011) and will make his 22nd with Walkinshaw Racing this weekend. He sits 18th in the V8 Supercars Championship with a best finish this season of fourth in Race 2 at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

ust four drivers have finished all 19 V8 Supercars Championship races this season - Red Bull Racing Australia’s Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, Tekno Autosport’s Jonathon Webb and Jack Daniel’s Racing’s Rick Kelly.

Whincup has more wins (7), podiums (13), pole positions (8), top five finishes (16) and top 10 finishes (16) than any other driver in the championship this season. Webb, meanwhile, was the top point-scoring driver across the three races at the Skycity Triple Crown in Darwin with Tekno teammate Shane van Gisbergen scoring the second highest number of points.

hey may have only taken two wins from the 19 races held so far this season, but one more for Ford Performance Racing will tie them with two of the all-time great teams in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship. One more win will take FPR to 38 race wins, tying it with the mighty Holden Dealer Team and Allan Moffat’s famous team for eighth on the all-time team win list. The Holden Racing Team still holds the record of most race wins at 169, though have been losing ground to Triple Eight Race Engineering in recent times - they have clocked up 107.

ne of the many strengths shown by Jamie Whincup and Triple Eight over recent seasons has been the ability to bounce back immediately from adversity. Whincup may have only finished 19th in the final race at Hidden Valley due to a drive-through for a pitlane infringement, but there’s little doubt that the four-time champion will head to Townsville as the red hot favourite. Whincup has a particular affinity for the Reid Park streets, finishing in the top two in seven of his eight starts here and winning five times, including the last three in succession. Needless to say, Sunday’s Hidden Valley blues aside, his recent form is also immensely strong, with ten top fives from his last 11 starts, including six victories. Of the rest, team-mate Craig Lowndes and Ford Performance Racing trio Mark
Winterbottom, Will Davison and David Reynolds will almost certainly threaten. Winterbottom broke a 12 month losing streak at Hidden Valley and has traditionally run very well here. Reynolds meanwhile continues to knock on the door of his first win. He scored a maiden career pole in Townsville last year and topped two of the three grid sheets at Hidden Valley. Along with Reynolds, James Courtney and Garth Tander appear best poised to
chalk up their first wins of the season or, at the very least, add to their podium tallies. Courtney in particular was very speedy at Hidden Valley, while Tander’s Townsville, and street circuit in general, form is positive. Despite its speed during the opening phase of the year, a question mark hangs over Brad Jones Racing due to its traditional struggles on these types of tracks, while the Nissan and Erebus Mercedes entries may lose out with longer fuel stops.
