For the first time in 10 years, V8 Supercars is staring down the barrel of ending its season with a ‘dead rubber’. Jamie Whincup need only score four more points than rival Mark Winterbottom this weekend to put the currently second placed Ford Performance Racing driver out of title contention prior to the final round. Third placed Craig Lowndes and fourth placed Will Davison meanwhile must outscore Whincup by 89 and 281 points respectively in order to even theoretically remain in the hunt - both unlikely propositions it should be said. It’s hardly an ideal situation for V8 Supercars, but it shouldn’t be seen as an embarrassment, either. If it is all over prior to Homebush, there’s still plenty of marketing power left in the fact that the Sydney event is the last for the current generation rule package. While the humble Winton facility might not be the dream location for a championship to be locked away, one mustn’t forget that this slot in the calendar was originally scheduled as the phantom “TBA” international race. It remains unknown which exact location(s) V8 Supercars had in mind exactly for the penultimate event position, but it isn’t too much of a stretch to suggest that the title could have been wrapped up in front of empty grandstands in an awkward time slot for live Australian television. Now that would have been a shame. The V8 Supercars Championship has of course been decided overseas before (2001), but a packed house at Pukekohe is arguably as good as any Australian location for a title winning celebration. No matter what happens in the future, it’s hard to imagine that the gong for the worst way to decide an Australian touring car title will ever be taken away from the 1994 season. In that year, the starting position number that Peter Brock drew for Sunday morning’s ‘Dash for Cash’ at Barbagallo’s penultimate round prevented him from being eligible for the number of passing points he needed to remain a threat to Mark Skaife. The category certainly has come a long way over the last two decades...

Winterbottom gunning for wins as title slips away
M
ark Winterbottom heads into the penultimate event of the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship with little to lose. Currently sitting second in the standings to Jamie Whincup, the Ford Performance Racing driver will be ruled out of title contention if he scores even four points less than his TeamVodafone rival across the two Winton races. A victory in either race this weekend would be a breakthrough for both Winterbottom and FPR, with the team having yet to win a race on its home circuit.
Winterbottom meanwhile has finished 15 of the last 16 V8 Supercars Championship races in the top six - including 11 podium finishes - but has gone winless in that time. Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley spoke to the 31-year-old ahead of the Winton weekend. SPEEDCAFE: The 2012 V8 championship is close to being Jamie Whincup’s property, but mathematically, you’re still in with a shot. How are you approaching this weekend at Winton?
MARK WINTERBOTTOM: We’re not in the best position, but we can’t really worry or look at the championship. We just want to finish the year strong and try to win races. That’s all we can do. Continued on page 6 >>

The last couple of rounds are good for us. They are good tracks and ones that we go well at. In terms of the championship, we’ll be massively lucky if we won it. There’s four races to go and Jamie is two races clear. It doesn’t look good for me! We’ll just keep trying. Winning races is what it’s all about. It would be nice to get another couple of wins in this car too, because it’s the last time that we race in this era of cars. There’s a lot of reasons why you want to win. SPEEDCAFE: Is it frustrating that you’ve
7
gone through this entire championship, and been very close all the way through, only to have it almost out of your reach … WINTERBOTTOM: It is frustrating, but you look through the year and look at what you did well and what you could improve on. Championships are won on the guy who is the best for the year. You can’t get to the end and say “If we’d won those last four races we would have won the championship.” For me, you look at our tyre issues at Bathurst. That was a definite killer. Triple Eight started off weaker than we did,
but at the mid-season point, they came on strong. I was surprised, actually, that they were able to do that. You’ve just got to try and find room to improve. It is obviously pretty close but if you did better things through the year, you’d be the one with the margin and you’d be talking a different story. You can’t really worry about it too much during the season, you have to do the job the whole year. SPEEDCAFE: FPR won seven races in a row at the start of the year. At Phillip Island in May, you guys were on top, but no one has been able to beat Triple Eight since. Can you put your finger on where Triple Eight found the gain?
WINTERBOTTOM: The thing they turned around really quickly was their fuel economy. We had very good fuel economy and definitely beat them with our fuel, but a week later they turned up at the next race and they’d fixed it. That was probably one thing they got on top of really quickly, which I thought would take them a bit of time. They also found some car speed. These cars should be at the end of their development. We know a lot about them and we Continued on page 9 >>

understand them. If it was a new car, you’d understand them finding a big gain, but they got back on top quickly.
until a couple of weeks before the main race. That will be tough on them and we’ve definitely got an advantage there.
SPEEDCAFE: Looking forward into next year, you guys have been one of your first Car of the Future cars on the track, the team is well on top of the build process and the key staff are remaining in place. Do you feel that this consistency and forward planning mean you’ll start 2013 at the front?
When you look at HRT and Triple Eight, they will have had the same amount of laps as what we have. Regardless, it will be tough,
WINTERBOTTOM: Yeah, hopefully. It’s a completely new car, but we’re in a really good position. We’ve run all of the new components that we’re going to be using next year, but in terms of car speed, it’s hard to know. You can’t do a lot of set-up work until you get the car to yourself. At the moment, we’re sharing a car. But for reliability, everything is running smoothly, and that’s probably the most important thing. There are some teams out there that won’t get their first car on track
and what set-up you have on this year’s cars won’t really translate to next year. Reliability will be important in the first few rounds. We’ll have done a fair bit of testing before then, so we should be in a good position.

Winton Motor Raceway Circuit Overview Location: Winton, Victoria Length: 3.0 kilometres Direction: Clockwise Maximum speed: 225km/h Fastest Point: Pit Straight Average Speed: 131km/h Circuit Description Self-billed as ‘The Nation’s Action Track,’ the tight and twisty rural layout features a range of slow corners which combine to make Winton the slowest circuit on the V8 Supercar calendar. Consisting of a total of 12 corners linked by short straights, it was lengthened by a kilometre in 1997. With so many slow corners, having a car that can be kind to its rear tyres is crucial, particularly in the longer races. TECH PREVIEW with

T
his weekend marks the latest point in the year that we’ve ever raced at Winton, so everyone will be dealing with a hotter track than we have there in the past. We’re usually going there in around May or June, and combining that with late afternoon races has usually made for very cold track conditions. All of the Victorian teams, us included, have tested there late in the year before, but we’re not usually doing race length tests at this stage of the season, so I don’t think that gives us any advantage. The Queenslanders certainly shouldn’t be behind the eight-ball when it comes to understanding higher temperatures, no matter what the track. Another difference this year is that, because of the Car of the Future, we haven’t done a test day with our current cars in the weeks leading up to the event like we normally would. To be honest, often when we test there so close to the race meeting we confuse ourselves because the track changes so
much it’s not even funny. Last year there was a drift weekend on just before our test and we were going two seconds slower than we had in the test before. It might turn out to be a good thing that we haven’t tested pre-event this year! Strategy Winton is quite hard on tyres, in both directions, so tyre life is going to be very important, as it always is. The place wears front tyres as much as rear tyres, unlike say Willowbank which only wears the left-rear. You’ve almost got a double hit from degradation because you lose front grip for turn-in and braking as well as the usual effects of losing the rear.
13
This is one of the places where Safety Cars are rare, which could open up the strategy a bit. If you have them, they’ll come due to accidents in the first couple of laps. Unless it’s really wet in the infield it’s the type of place where people can have an off and rejoin without too much trouble.
Results
That presents the real possibility of running the soft tyres first, providing you have a good qualifying position and can make the most of them early. It’s a bit like Darwin in that respect.
The best we can do is try our best and see what we get. All three of our drivers are certainly ready to have a go, I can tell you that.
I think we’ll see a lot of guys doing their learning on Saturday and then applying those lessons to Sunday. The weather looks like being pretty good and giving us track temperatures in the 30s or 40s for both days, so what you learn on one day should transfer pretty well to the next.
TeamVodafone are obviously going to be strong, and HRT have done a big step recently so they’ll be pretty close. We’ll just have to wait and see where everyone ends up.
It’s no secret that FPR hasn’t had a lot of success at Winton before, but it’s not as if the team hasn’t been competitive, it’s just not put it all together on the day.

uch is made of the ‘home track advantage’ for Victorian teams at Winton Motor Raceway given they regularly test there, but the Queensland teams have scooped the majority of the silverware in recent years. The ‘invaders’ have won nine of the last 13 V8 Supercar races at Winton with six wins to TeamVodafone and three to Jim Beam Racing. However, it’s only been in recent years that the Queensland teams have regularly got on top of their Victorian counterparts. On the whole across the five-litre V8 era since 1993, the Victorian teams have won 26 of the 40 races (65%), while Queensland-based squads have won 14 (35%). Victorian teams have taken 13 of the 20 pole positions, which also equates to a 65% success rate. Last year saw honours even in both qualifying and the races, with the poles shared between TeamVodafone’s Craig Lowndes and Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom, and the races won by TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup and Team BOC’s Jason Bright.
T
he Bottle-O Racing Team and Racing Entitlements Contract owner Rod Nash is on target to win the Most Improved Award in the V8 Supercars Championship for the second time in three years. First awarded in 2006, the accolade recognises the improvement of a particular team and its entry over the course of 12 months. It is judged from the final championship results year-to-year. The team’s #55 Falcon finished 24th in last year’s championship in the hands of Paul Dumbrell and this year sits ninth in the points in the hands of David Reynolds - an improvement of 15 positions. Ironically, the team also won the award in 2010 after Dumbrell had improved the #55 entry from finishing 24th in 2009 (when Nash’s REC was leased out to Tony D’Alberto’s team) to ninth in 2010. The nearest contender in 2012 is the #14 Brad Jones Racing entry, driven under the Lockwood Racing banner this year by Fabian Coulthard. Last year it finished 22nd in the hands of Jason Bargwanna and it currently sits 10th in the championship - an improvement of 12 positions over where the car finished in 2011.
W
ill Davison has moved to the front in the fight for the Armor All Pole Position Award - which sees the driver with the most poles for 2012 receive a $20,000 prize. The Tradingpost FPR pilot took three poles in Abu Dhabi to move his season tally to eight - two clear of Jamie Whincup - and that leaves he and Whincup the only drivers able to win the award. With four poles still available at Winton and Sydney Olympic Park, it’s still very much up for grabs. Whincup has had a stranglehold on the award having won it for the last four years straight.

T
eamVodafone could seal the 2012 Champion Team Award at Winton and win the team’s title for the fourth time in five seasons. TeamVodafone currently has a 513 point lead over Ford Performance Racing and will clinch the Teams Championship if it leaves Winton 576 points or more in front of FPR with only the Sydney Telstra 500 remaining. The maximum any team can score in a race at Winton or Sydney Olympic Park is 288 points, with 150 for a victory and 138 for a second place.
T
he penultimate round of the Dunlop Series is the primary support category at Winton. Ford Performance Racing’s Chaz Mostert leads by just 20 points over Fujitsu Racing’s Scott McLaughlin, with Bathurst round winner Nick Percat third in the Coates Hire Commodore and 124 points behind Mostert. Monster/Triple Eight pilot Scott Pye is four points behind Percat in fourth with Luke Youlden sitting fifth. Youlden has received a pre-event boost to his hopes of breaking through for his first victory of the season with news that he’ll step into Matthew White Motorsport’s FG model Falcon previously raced by Tim Blanchard.

They may not test here, but Triple Eight cars have a strong recent record at Winton, winning nine of the last 13 races in the hands of both TeamVodafone and Dick Johnson Racing. Jamie Whincup has a real chance of wrapping up his fourth title this weekend, needing only four points more than Mark Winterbottom to do so. While Whincup will be determined not to see the title go down to the final round, FPR is highly likely to be TeamVodafone’s greatest threat this weekend, so there’s little scope for Whincup to change his mindset away from going for victories. Craig Lowndes meanwhile scored a pole here last year but has struggled with car set-up at each of the last three events and will be doing well to see the podium.

This weekend should show just how much improvement the Walkinshaw Racing squad has made in the last three months. Garth Tander was very strong here by the end of the weekend last year, going toe-to-toe with Jamie Whincup for much of Sunday’s race before both were gazumped by Jason Bright in the closing stages. While recent form indicates that beating TeamVodafone and Ford Performance Racing to score the squad’s first victory in 13 months is unlikely, eight top 10s from his last nine starts including five top fives - suggests Tander won’t be far away. Stone Brothers Racing had an outstanding weekend last time out in Abu Dhabi, where Shane van Gisbergen and Tim Slade combined to double the team’s season podium tally to six. Slade and Lee Holdsworth meanwhile both scored their season-best qualifying positions. Unfortunately, the contrast between Yas Marina and Winton is stark, so little can be expected to transfer from one circuit to the other. Meanwhile, between event speculation on the commitment of its driver’s to the team’s 2013 guise meanwhile could prove destabilising, especially for van Gisbergen’s side of the garage. Adding to its win tally may be all that’s left for Ford Performance Racing in season 2012 with Jamie Whincup and TeamVodafone on the verge of wrapping up the drivers’ and teams’ titles respectively. The squad has only beaten TeamVodafone once in the last 15 starts, but should be confident of scoring a maiden victory on its home circuit this weekend. Its 2011 Winton campaign is remembered for Mark Winterbottom’s disastrous run on the soft tyres on Sunday, but as has been said repeatedly this year, the cars have come a long way since then. The Bagman’s Say
Brad Jones Racing Base: Albury, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Walkinshaw Racing Engines: Noonan Race Engines Team principals: Brad and Kim Jones
Brad Jones Racing looms as the dark horse heading into this weekend. Although the collective understanding of the soft rubber has improved significantly since last time the circus visited Winton, Jason Bright’s win here last year shows just what this team is capable of on home soil. Fabian Coulthard, however, appears a better prospect for a top result, with Bright currently on a run of seven races without a top 10 starting position or finish. Although not quite at the level of his mid-season charge that netted four top fives in the space of five races, Coulthard has finished in the top dozen in each of the last four starts. It won’t be easy, but a return to the top five could well be on for the Kiwi this weekend.

Dick Johnson Racing Base: Yatla, Queensland Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: InnoV8 (Roger Higgins) Team principal: Dick Johnson
James Moffat equalled the best finish of the season so far for Dick Johnson Racing with sixth in the third leg of the Abu Dhabi triple-header. Although the performance is unlikely to transfer across to the tight confines of Winton, it should be noted that Moffat was on the pace all weekend at Yas Marina, qualifying 14th, 10th and fifth for the three races. The team will also have relatively fond memories of last year’s Winton event, where Steven Johnson qualified second and third for the two races respectively - converting that speed into a rare podium on Saturday. This year’s form however indicates that running among the top half of the field will make for a good weekend.

Tekno Autosports Base: Stapylton, Queensland Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Jonathon Webb
Jonathon Webb was in the wars in Abu Dhabi, copping plenty of criticism from his fellow drivers both for contact with Jason Bright that started a multi-car melee in the third race and for the way in which he was repeatedly taking to the circuit’s tarmac run-off areas. Regardless, the #19 Tekno Holden has shown plenty of speed this year, leaving Webb looking for his 12th top 10 of the season this weekend. Six of his current 11 top 10s have come in the last nine races - including Tekno’s maiden podium on the Gold Coast. Team-mate Michael Patrizi meanwhile has also shown speed but has endured a tough run of late and looks to be on the outer heading into 2013. By contrast to Webb, Patrizi is looking for his fourth top 10 of the season and his first in 11 races.

Garry Rogers Motorsport Base: Dandenong South, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Garry Rogers Motorsport Engines: Walkinshaw Racing Team principal: Garry Rogers
There’ll be plenty of eyes on this small team this weekend, as there always is when the championship visits GRM’s home circuit. Michael Caruso has had a difficult spell in recent races appears to be on the move for 2013, but several strong results throughout the season indicate that the #34 Holden can be a top 10, if not top five, contender on its day. Expect top 10s at a minimum here. For Alexandre Premat, Winton is just the second circuit that the Frenchman has been able to test on prior to a race meeting, and he’ll be hoping to turn that experience into improved results, especially in light of the team’s recent decision to ‘rest’ him for the Gold Coast event.

Tony D’Alberto Racing Base: Knoxfield, Victoria Car: Ford Falcon FG Chassis: Ford Performance Racing Engines: Ford Performance Racing Team principal: Al D’Alberto
Tony D’Alberto’s pleas for some good fortune following a shocking run across the three two-driver events were answered in Abu Dhabi, where the Hiflex Ford narrowly escaped being drawn into the Webb/Bright/Reindler/Fiore fracas. TDR is another local squad that’ll have high hopes for results this weekend - the penultimate event in its two-year link-up with Ford Performance Racing. While a return to the top 10 will be a stretch, expect this entry to run solidly in the mid-fied.

The Bagman’s Say Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Base: Nunawading, Victoria Car: Holden Commodore VEII Chassis: Triple Eight Race Engineering Engines: KRE Team principal: Lucas Dumbrell
The Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Holden is the only one of the nine Triple Eight chassis in the field to test at Winton, and Taz Douglas will undoubtedly benefit from having completed pre-event mileage at here before making his first main game start at the circuit. While there is also a healthy buzz currently around this team thanks to speculation that it’ll expand to two cars in 2013, it’s hard to see Douglas making much of an impact on the top 20 this weekend.
