State of Origin II The second leg of V8 Supercars’ annual ‘state of origin’ contest takes place at Winton this weekend where the Queensland-based teams will attempt to beat the Victorians on their home turf. The Winton versus Queensland Raceway testing divide seen in V8 Supercars is rather unique in professional motorsport, existing both due to the location of the teams and the lack of viable alternative venues in those areas. Although Morgan Park has seen its share of testing action this year due to the difficulty of booking Queensland Raceway at short notice, the two-track testing phenomenon has largely been the norm since hiring Phillip Island became too expensive for the Victorian teams last decade. The fact that the visitors often win on their rivals’ home circuit is an oft-talked about subject that continues to intrigue year-on-year. While test days are extremely limited in V8 Supercars, common sense suggests that any extra data available to a team, particularly this year in the first season run under new technical regulations, should be a distinct advantage. The Winton stats are quite stark, with Queensland squads taking nine of the last 11 races wins. Only the Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander and Brad Jones Racing’s Jason Bright have broken through for the locals in recent times. The class-leading performance of Triple Eight during the whole championship in recent years has the tendency to skew such stats, but with all three factory teams in V8 Supercars based in Melbourne, it can hardly be argued that only the minnows test at Winton. The likes of Ford Performance Racing, the Holden Racing Team, Brad Jones Racing or Garry Rogers Motorsport – which took out a race on Queensland soil three weeks ago – may well win this weekend. But if they do so, it’ll be due to making all the right moves over the course of the race meeting, rather than courtesy of a pre-existing advantage.

Living the dream

Scott McLaughlin has hit the ground running in his rookie season

H

eading into this year’s V8 Supercars Championship, nobody expected Scott McLaughlin to be slow.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a stellar run in 2012, winning the Dunlop Series and New Zealand V8 SuperTourer titles in addition to scoring a pair of top six results on debut in the V8 Supercars Championship at Sandown and Bathurst. Nevertheless, the level of success that McLaughlin and relative minnow Garry Rogers Motorsport have enjoyed over the opening half of the year has been nothing short of astounding. The rookie has taken the team to three race wins, finding success at the nonchampionship at Albert Park meeting, on home soil at Pukekohe and last time out at Queensland Raceway. The continued pace has come despite the tight-knit two-car operation developing a new Volvo S60 V8 Supercar package for next season alongside its current racing program. Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to McLaughlin about his season

so far and the road ahead with a new manufacturer. SPEEDCAFE: Scott, you’ve said a couple of times this year that you’re living the dream. Is that how it really feels? SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, it really does. It has been my dream for a long time to race in this championship and I’m doing it now. Winning races was kind of a separate dream and I’m doing that too, which is amazing. But as long as I get to drive V8 Supercars I’ll be living the dream.

helped. We didn’t really show it (the benefit of the test) in Townsville, although there was a bit of a sign with the front row there. But like you said, for me it was good. I got my qualifying a bit better, which now i’ve got to keep up. I found a good warm-up procedure and a few other things. My starts were good... it’s all slowly coming together. Everyone has to remember that, even

I’ve done three years in the Ourthough proud platinum partners

SPEEDCAFE: Thinking back to the last event at Ipswich, it didn’t end well in the final race (where he was forced to pit with a tyre failure while running second), but it looked like the most complete weekend you’d had from a driving perspective. Is that a fair assessment? McLAUGHIN: I think you’re only ever as good as the car that’s given to you. We had a really good package going there at Queensland Raceway. We’d had a good test day (in June) which

Dunlop Series, I’m only new in this series and everything has to be stepped up to another level. I have to get up to that level as quickly as possible, and I think we’re going in the right direction. SPEEDCAFE: Talking about the car beneath you, the general consensus seems to be that the these new cars have a lot bigger set-up window than the old ones in terms of changes to spring rates and roll-centres and so on track-to-track. Is that how your team has found it? McLAUGHLIN: I think we’ve been quite lucky in that our car has been basically good everywhere, except for one or two tracks. Like you say we have done a lot of things that are completely different to the last track we’ve been to or different to Winton (our test track). But then sometimes we’ve come back to a set-up that we had at say Adelaide, and it’ll work at a different track. It’s weird how it all sort of works but I think it depends on a lot on how your car is designed as to how it’ll react to different tracks. SPEEDCAFE: A lot of guys have gone into the year working on a new car with the same people that they’d been with previously. For you, both are new. Has the human element been a work-inprogress too? McLAUGHLIN: No, not really. I think my engineer Richard Holloway has been awesome. We got a little bit of a head start

last year when I jumped in at Sydney (in place of Alexandre Premat for the final race) and had a crack.

abnormally soft or abnormally hard on the front spring or anything like that (at a race meeting).

Richard was my engineer there and he quickly learnt how much feedback and talk I like in the races and all of those sorts of things.

It was just good for us to have a go and see what direction helps us the most.

I think working in the fabrication department at GRM has helped me a bit as well in terms of getting to know everyone. Working in this team is the happiest I’ve ever been racing. I’m just enjoying it and looking forward to the future.

srentrap munitalp duorp ruO ™

ytiruceS enO-nI-llA

SPEEDCAFE: You mentioned the preTownsville test a bit earlier, but you’ve now done another one before Winton. How did that go? McLAUGHLIN: The test before Townsville was cut short a bit to be honest. We didn’t get to try everything that we wanted to but we got to try enough. This last test was awesome, it was sunny all day, and we got to complete the program that we’d set for the earlier test. We tried stuff that we wouldn’t normally do on a race weekend. You can’t really go

SPEEDCAFE: So combining your recent results with the fact that this is your test track, the bar must be set pretty high for this weekend? McLAUGHLIN: Oh, for sure. It’s our test track, so we head into their expecting to be fast. But that can bite us on the backside a little bit too. We’ve just got to go about our business as we’ve done all year. My expectations aren’t going to change. I’ll be aiming for the top 10 and just see where we end up. There are a lot of fast cars out there and I’m just trying as hard as I can. Whatever happens, happens. SPEEDCAFE: Do you think there is any danger of GRM falling off in the second half of the season due to the need to divert resources to the Volvo development?

www.speedcafe.com

Races 25/26/27 - Winton I Cover Story

McLAUGHLIN: Honestly, no, I don’t think so. We’ve got a pretty strong package to take to the end of the season. It’s not like we’re switching our engine development program from one to another, because Walkinshaw does our engines now and Polestar are doing the Volvo ones for us. We’re going to be running the same chassis next year, so what we learn this year with those will benefit us next year.

of the process of developing a new package? Or do you have to be braced for a bit of a struggle? McLAUGHLIN: I’m very lucky that I’ve had a good year this year and have been able to show what I can do. If anything sets us back, obviously it’s going to be tough, I think we’re going to have a bit of both. I’m bracing for a bit of that but I’m also

7

looking forward to the times when we’ve moved forward and got a couple of good results. I’m very confident that we’ll be even better than where Nissan and the Mercs were last year. I think we’ve got a good enough team here to do it. I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be tough, but I’ve signed on for another three years because I’m looking forward to moving ahead with the project.

If anything I think having the Volvo deal will be helping us. Not doing our engines in house, it might help us a little bit and drag us forward because obviously the funds are a big thing. I don’t think we’ll suffer too much. SPEEDCAFE: Naturally it should be easier for you guys than it was for Nissan and Erebus/Mercedes, which both had to do their new engine and chassis programs simultaneously. McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, for sure. If you think about all the things that went on before this season just getting all those bits and pieces to fit, be that gearbox coolers or whatever, that’s all been done now. We just need to get the body panels and the engine in the car and we’re racing. Volvo have probably done the smartest thing jumping into the second year. SPEEDCAFE: Is it an exciting to be part

his year’s V8 Supercars Championship is already on track to be the most competitive ever with 10 different drivers - Craig Lowndes, Shane van Gisbergen, Fabian Coulthard, Jason Bright, Scott McLaughlin, Jamie Whincup, Will Davison, Mark Winterbottom, Garth Tander and Chaz Mostert - claiming race victories across the first eight events of the season. It’s just the second time in over 50 years of championship history that this has occurred. A total of seven different teams - Red Bull Racing Australia, Tekno Autosports, Brad Jones Racing, Fujitsu Racing GRM, Pepsi Max Crew FPR, Holden Racing Team and Dick Johnson Racing - have claimed victories, the first time since 2001 that seven teams have won races within the first eight events of a season. And the competition has been strong in very recent times seven different drivers and six different teams - have won the last seven races in the championship.

C

haz Mostert’s last-start win at Queensland Raceway was a popular one and helped turn 2013 into an historic season from a rookie perspective.

Mostert and Scott McLaughlin have both won races in their first full-time V8 Supercars Championship season - it’s the first time in 17 years (since Craig Lowndes and Russell Ingall in 1996!) that two first-year full-time pilots have won races in a season. Mostert’s Ipswich success was the 81st ATCC/V8SC race victory for Dick Johnson Racing and its first since Jonathon Webb won in the wet at Sydney Olympic Park in 2010. Fabian Coulthard has also won his first race this season, meaning there have been three first-time race winners in 2013 - it’s the first time since 2006 that a season has seen such a number of breakthrough performances for young full-time drivers.

The new VF Commodore has won 20 of the 24 races completed in 2013 and given Holden its 10th Manufacturer’s crown since the award was introduced in 1999. While Holden can not be beaten for the trophy with 12 races remaining, Ford has picked up the pace in recent times - three of its four race wins this season have come in the last seven races.

uch is made of the ‘home test track’ advantage in the V8 Supercars Championship, however the numbers clearly show that the ‘invading’ Queensland-based teams have dominated Winton in recent years. Queensland-based teams have won 9 of the last 11 races held at the circuit since 2008 with six taken by Triple Eight and three by Dick Johnson Racing. The only Victorian teams to stand up to the visitors have been the Holden Racing Team (one win by Garth Tander in 2008) and Brad Jones Racing (one by Jason Bright in 2011). A total of 19 cars in the field of 28 use Winton as their home test track.

ne more Armor All Pole Position award will allow Jamie Whincup to break his own record for most pole positions in a V8 Supercars Championship season.

The Red Bull Racing Australia pilot has equaled his 2010 record with 10 poles so far this season and looks set to set a new mark in 2013.

www.speedcafe.com

Whincup has claimed 41.66% of the poles this season - in 2010 he took 38.46% of them. However, no one seems likely to ever top Peter Brock’s perfect record from 1980 when he had a 100% polewinning season - eight from eight!

The Bagman says...

T

he form book appears more wide open than ever as the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship enters its final sprint event before the Pirtek Enduro Cup. Chaz Mostert made it 10 different winners for the season last time out at Queensland Raceway, with that success having been spread over no less than seven different teams. Points leader Whincup has been the most consistent throughout the year to date and again has to be the favourite ahead of the weekend. The fact that he has qualified off the first four rows for four of the last six races, however, means that nothing can be taken for granted. Scott McLaughlin and GRM proved in Queensland that local knowledge isn’t vital, even in this first year of the new technical

regulations. Past years at Winton have more often than not seen the visitors prevail, with Triple Eight-built cars setting the pace in recent times. Of the new players, the layout of the circuit will likely mask the engine performance issues of the Nissans, which could well sneak into the top 10 during the

Sunday races. Erebus, particularly through Tim Slade, has shown strong qualifying speed of late and could be boosted further by the predicted cool conditions. Regardless, the heavy-hitters at FPR and HRT and young guns McLaughlin and Chaz Mostert will likely still prove Red Bull’s biggest challengers.
