When one discusses the form in the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship with casual observers of the category, the question ‘David who?’ invariably gets asked. David Reynolds’ junior championship achievements and early V8 Supercars efforts may be well known to hardened fans and scribes alike, but the 27-year-old’s move to The Bottle-O Racing this year has undoubtedly thrust him into the spotlight like never before. While frequent displays of the Albury native’s quirky sense of humour at Friday press conferences have raised plenty of eyebrows, Reynolds has been just as notable by his absence from the similar late afternoon talk fests for the top three drivers on Saturdays and Sundays. Continuing on from previous efforts at Kelly Racing, Reynolds’ raw speed has been undeniably strong this season, with 10 consecutive top six qualifying performances leaving the #55 Falcon with a yearto-date starting average of 5.1. Over one lap, only Will Davison, Mark Winterbottom and Jamie Whincup have consistently performed better. Turning that potential into trophies remains a work in progress however, as Reynolds has rather remarkably finished lower than his qualifying position in each one of those last 10 races. Mechanical issues and incidents aside, the race pace has simply not been a match for those starting around him. The green Falcon’s inability to duplicate the tyre life of its blue and orange stable-mates is currently the source of much analysis at FPR, which for the most part has been the team to beat this season. With Davison, Winterbottom and Reynolds’ Saturday qualifying efforts separated by less than 0.05s at Hidden Valley, it’s easy to forget that each driver is extracting the lap time in his own unique way. Science may be the underlying premise for success in professional motor racing, but matching the mechanical variables in the garage to the preferences and style of each driver remains a fine art. Just when Reynolds will crack it for his first podium and victory in the V8 Supercars Championship remains difficult to predict. The question ‘David Who?’ however, is undoubtedly on borrowed time. Green means go!

The former Australian Formula Ford and Carrera Cup champion has been dynamite in qualifying, but has yet to register a podium finish. The recently turned 27-year-old spoke to Speedcafe.com’s Grant Rowley ahead of the weekend’s racing. SPEEDCAFE: This season’s V8 Supercars Championship has been dominated by TeamVodafone and Ford Performance Racing. You drive an FPR car, but you haven’t been on a podium yet. Do you feel that it’s far away? DAVID REYNOLDS: It’s been baby steps for
I don’t think we’re too far off. I qualify well. Now, it’s about changing my style and the car in the races to get some more tyre life. SPEEDCAFE: You don’t get fussed about too many things in life, but is it frustrating that your team-mates are winning and you aren’t? REYNOLDS: It’s just about those baby steps. The performance has been a bit erratic at some places, a bit hot and cold, but it’s not like I’m in the top five one week and then the bottom 20 the next. It’s only minor, and were working our way through it. So far, I’m very happy with how everything is going with The Bottle-O car. It’s going
great, despite the fact that I haven’t got a trophy yet. SPEEDCAFE: You look like you’ve fitted in quite well into the FPR organisation. Did you think that was going to be the case before the first race of the year in Adelaide? REYNOLDS: It’s a hard thing to walk into a new work place, or when you’re younger, going to a new school. You don’t know how you’re going to fit in, but I generally get along well with everyone, and I always make an effort to get along with everyone. I’m always trying to have a joke, have a laugh. Some people even laugh at my jokes, which is nice of them! SPEEDCAFE: Your team-mates Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom are competing

for this year’s championship. At this point, it looks like the title fight will be between those two and the TeamVodafone drivers. How have you seen the relationship between Will and Mark develop over the year? REYNOLDS: They both want to win the races and the championship as much as each other. Will is doing a fantastic job, Mark is doing a fantastic job ... Everyone is working together for the same goal. Only one can win it obviously, but as far as I can tell, I think they still get along. SPEEDCAFE: A team manager’s cliche is to say that “the team-mates are allowed to race, but under no circumstances allowed to crash.” Is that what Tim Edwards says to you guys? REYNOLDS: We race as hard we can, but
you don’t want to crash into anyone – full stop. It doesn’t matter if it’s your team-mate or worst enemy. It goes without saying ... We’re not really told to be careful, but we know what we need to do. If a person from my team was passing me, I don’t make it too hard, but I expect the same back. Sometimes that doesn’t happen! SPEEDCAFE: Lets talk about Townsville. You qualified third there for Saturday’s race last year ... REYNOLDS: My (Kelly Racing) car was good there last year. On Friday, it wasn’t that good, but James (Small, engineer) and I tuned it up and it was a pretty good car at the end. Our first race strategy should have played into our hands. We started on softs, but we didn’t get a Safety Car ... We were looking OK, but we’ll never know because
the car failed. This year, I think we can go even better. SPEEDCAFE: What do you think of the actual Townsville circuit? REYNOLDS: I like the layout. It’s a good track. The last two corners are too tight, but that’s what we have to deal with. The rest of the track is pretty fun, and there’s always a good crowd – a real happy, knowledgeable fan base. Circuit Description Located just south of the Townsville CBD, the circuit winds its way through Reid Park where specially constructed roads form 70 percent of the circuit. Set in a parkland style reminiscent of the Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne, the Townsville circuit proved to be a challenge in its inaugural year in 2009 and quickly became a favourite of the drivers.

ownsville is a race track with a lot of character that needs to be taken into account when you’re tuning your car.
It’s really got a bit of everything. There are a couple of big kerbs in there and a couple of bumpy sections that you have to have a think about, particularly to ensure that you have a strong car late in the stints. Last year a lot of us struggled with the kerbs at Turns 5 and 6. The kerbing there is funny in that if you hit it fast enough you can clear the second part of it, but if you’re a little bit cautious you land right on top of it and typically bend the car. We saw a lot of mangled shock absorbers last year in various cars, especially early in the weekend before we got our heads around where we could drive and where we couldn’t. Getting good drive over the bumps at the exit of Turn 3 is also important, and the rest of the circuit is really about trying to stop the car breaking into a flat slide. It’s certainly not an easy circuit to find a balance around. Tyres What they call Turns 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 around the back of the circuit are consecutive right-handers, so that tends
to give the left-rear tyre a real sizzling, especially if the driver isn’t looking after it. There are only two proper left-hand corners on the whole track. With the drive-line torque and the way the chassis twists when it puts its power down, the cars actually turn left better than they do right, so theoretically on a clockwise circuit like this you’ll see shorter tyre life. Townsville hasn’t been particularly hard on tyres in the past though - it’s certainly gentler than a Perth or a Darwin. Last year we saw Jamie do his fastest lap very late in Sunday’s race, which was impressive. I still think though that the current soft tyres are a bit different to how they were 12 months ago. We’re seeing more degradation at most circuits this year, so it remains a bit of a unknown heading into each weekend. The pace has picked up quite a bit this year, so that’s no doubt got something to do with it.

I’d be very surprised to see anyone try something outside of the standard two-stop, hard-soft-soft tyre strategy that we’ve seen at the other 200km races so far this year.
I think though that it’s a strategy that has a far greater effect at some circuits than others. It works very well at Perth and Darwin, but at circuits like Townsville where the degradation is a lot less it’s naturally less important.
There are very big fuel windows, but if we see the tyre degradation that we did last year then everyone is just going to try and run as long as they can on the soft tyre. To do it any other way (starting on softs) really leaves yourself open to a Safety Car. Managing the tyre bank In Darwin we saw Craig Lowndes really benefit from sacrificing a qualifying run on Sunday in order to finish the race on a brand new set of soft tyres. It’s a good, deliberate play to save a set and then go to it as soon as you can in the race, because you’ve got a five or six lap advantage over anyone who has run their tyres in qualifying. You seem to be able to push the tyre harder
To be fair, no one had Triple Eight’s car speed in Darwin anyway. They certainly had better tyre life than us on the day. Our form in Darwin was possibly a bit track specific, but Triple Eight had better tyre life than us in Perth and Hamilton as well, so we’ll see what it’s like this weekend. It’s often about how you pick the balance for your car for a session. You can hear drivers complaining about having understeer on their hard tyre set or early in their soft tyre stint, but then they’ll come on really strongly at the end of the session. It’s a very, very close fight between us and Triple Eight at the moment.

anadian Jacques Villeneuve will make his return to the V8 Supercars Championship in Townsville. The 41-year-old will replace Greg Murphy in the #51 Pepsi Max Crew Commodore as the Kiwi continues to recover from recent back surgery. Villeneuve last appeared in the V8 Supercars Championship at the 2010 Armor All Gold Coast 600, sharing The Bottle-O Falcon with Paul Dumbrell. They finished 22nd and fifth in the two races. Villeneuve is one of only three men, alongside Mario Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi, to win the F1 World Championship, IndyCar Series and Indy 500.

he Holden Racing Team may not have won a race since last October, but Garth Tander’s record in Townsville suggests North Queensland could be where he breaks the drought. The 2007 V8 Supercar champion, like rival Jamie Whincup, has finished on the podium in Townsville in five of the six races held there since 2009. Tander, who won the Saturday race last year in

istory is quickly proving that you don’t need to start from the front row of the grid at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 to win a race. Of the six races held so far, only once has a winner come from the front row of the grid - Jamie Whincup started on pole position on Saturday in 2010. In the other five races, the winner has started fourth or worse on the grid! The lowest grid position for a Townsville race winner is ninth Jamie Whincup in the inaugural race on the Saturday in 2009. Garth Tander started fifth to win on Saturday last year, while Whincup came from eighth to win on Sunday.
Townsville, is the only driver to have qualified in the top five for every race held at the circuit. Tander’s average Townsville qualifying position is 3.16, better than Whincup (4), Mark Winterbottom (5.3), Craig Lowndes (6.8), Lee Holdsworth (7.7) and James Courtney (7.7).

he battle for the Armor All Pole Position Award in the V8 Supercars Championship is heating up as the halfway mark of the season approaches. Craig Lowndes, Will Davison and Jamie Whincup are all tied on three pole positions with Garth Tander and Mark Winterbottom tied on two. They are all aiming to knock off Whincup, who has won the ARMOR ALL Pole Position Award for four years straight from 2008 to 2011. Of the 29 drivers that have competed so far this year, Davison has the best qualifying average from the 13 grids set so far in 2012. Davison’s average qualifying position sits at 3.4, clear of teammate Winterbottom (3.7), Whincup (3.7), David Reynolds (5.1), Tander (8.3) and Shane van Gisbergen (8.6). ujitsu Racing GRM’s Michael Caruso has proven himself to be one of the best ‘racers’ in the field in the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship. The #34 Commodore driver has qualified in the top 10 for just two of the 13 races held so far this year - but finished inside it five times.
Four times he’s been able to score a top 10 race finish after starting outside it, with his biggest charge coming in Race 4 in Hamilton, NZ - 22nd to seventh for a gain of 15 positions. Caruso qualified a season-best fifth for the last race in Darwin and converted it into a season-best fourth. Caruso’s Townsville form tells a
similar story to his stats sheet from 2012. His best qualfying of fourth and race finish of fifth came in the very first race in Townsville in 2009. Since then he’s been unable to qualify better than 14th or finish a race higher than 11th on the North Queensland street layout.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... TeamVodafone struck back in its season-long tussle with Ford Performance Racing at Hidden Valley. While the factory Fords proved superior in qualifying, Whincup and Lowndes shared the race wins thanks chiefly to superior tyre life. The team’s cars have proven strong in Townsville since the event’s exception, with tyres again proving a determining factor in Whincup’s victory last year. Expect another tough fight between TeamVodafone and FPR this weekend, with the red cars entering the events as narrow favourites for the first time in months.

Walkinshaw Racing THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Garth Tander may have had a middling weekend last time out at Hidden Valley, but history indicates that one shouldn’t discount the #2 Commodore’s chances on the streets of Townsville. Tander has five podium finishes from six starts at the Reid Park circuit, and won Saturday’s race last year after proving the class of the field on both compounds of tyre. At the very least Tander can be considered a reasonable chance to add to his pair of poles and podiums already recorded this season. Courtney and Ingall meanwhile continue to struggle to make the top 10 in both qualifying and the races.

Qualifying form is set to be the key for Stone Brothers Racing this weekend following difficulties extracting one-lap speed from its cars here in 2011 and last-time out at Hidden Valley. All three of the Queensland-based Fords started Race 13 from outside the top 10 - making the task of adding a fourth podium to its season highly difficult. Race pace has generally been a strength on both compounds of tyre however, with each of its three entries capable of finishing in the top five this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Ford Performance Racing’s Falcons continued to prove the fastest qualifying cars last time out at Hidden Valley, but for the first time all season, tyre life was a serious issue. The factory Fords fell away from their TeamVodafone rivals during the races, especially on the soft tyre. Davison and Winterbottom’s form from earlier in the season suggests this may have been a track-specific issue, but it’s something to look out for this weekend regardless. While Reynolds has struggled to put race results on the board all year, he was exceptionally quick here last year with Kelly Racing and continues to threaten for a career first pole.

Kelly Racing’s Commodores may have struggled so far this year, but the team will garner plenty of attention this weekend thanks to the one-off appearance of former F1 champ Jacques Villeneuve in the Pepsi Max entry. The Canadian caused controversy with his driving in his only previous V8 start on the Gold Coast in 2010, but ultimately proved one of the fastest international drivers across the weekend. Qualifying off the back couple of rows will be a tough ask this weekend however, the combination of the category’s competitiveness and Kelly Racing’s woes setting up a tough challenge. The team’s other three entries are also unlikely to see the top 10 over one-lap, leaving the Kelly brothers to fight amongst the midfield in the races.

Hidden Valley provided mixed results for Brad Jones Racing, with Jason Bright seemingly losing his recent momentum, and Fabian Coulthard turning around a tough three-race run by finishing an impressive fifth in Sunday’s Race 13. The Team BOC entry started and finished both races outside the top 10 in Darwin, but at least showed relatively impressive tyre life on the soft rubber. Coulthard meanwhile could be highly satisfied after coming out on top in a race-long battle with Will Davison. Both drivers will again be shooting for the top 10 this weekend, while third pilot David Wall will be looking to add to his three top 20 finishes earned so far in his rookie season.

Expectations again remain low for results from DJR this weekend following another troubled outing at Hidden Valley. All four of the team’s drivers sit in the bottom half of the championship standings having again failed to see the top 10 in either of the respective qualifying sessions or races. Taking the gamble to start two of its cars on the soft tyres for both races in Darwin appeared to be at best an optimistic tactic and at worst an act of desperation. Townsville meanwhile will mark Fiore’s second weekend working alongside Nathan McColl. Having qualified 26th and 27th for the two races in Darwin, there’s plenty of work to do.

THE BAGMAN’S SAY... Jonathon Webb’s 17th position in the championship standings belies the inherent speed shown by the #19 Commodore this season. Webb has qualified inside the top 10 on seven occasions so far, and finished there in three of the last four races. Team-mate Michael Patrizi meanwhile has arguably been the more consistent of the pair - finishing nine of the season’s first 13 races between 14th and 20th, albeit with a qualifying average almost six places lower than Webb’s impressive 11.7. Expect both cars to run well inside the top 20 here, with anything up to a top five finish appearing achievable.

The Frenchman’s season qualifying average of 21.9 however is the fourth-worst in the field, and will need to be lifted if he is to score a maiden top 10 finish.
