s the V8 Supercars circus rolls into Winton Motor Raceway, one can’t help but feel that there will be some very disappointed teams leaving the track on Sunday night.

Compounding the issue is that the Queenslanders have taken the last four Winton races, and with the form that TeamVodafone showed last time out in Western Australia, it won’t be a Victorian that’ll start favourite to take the weekend’s biggest trophies. There is currently much debate over the existence of a ‘home track advantage’ in V8 Supercars. In this Race Guide, we ask V8 Supercars veteran Greg Murphy his thoughts on the matter. One aspect set to scatter the form book is the weather. While making sense of the current pecking order on both the hard and soft compound tyres takes a bit of doing, wet or changeable conditions mean that almost anyone can win. Q&A with GREG MURPHY

A

fter several seasons in the V8 Supercars doldrums, Greg Murphy is beginning to see light at the end of a very long tunnel.

The four-time Bathurst 1000 winner may sit only 20th in the points standings after the opening nine races, but as part of Kelly Racing’s four-car squad, Murphy feels he is making progress. Promising speed on home soil in Hamilton vanished in Perth, but a pre-event test at the Winton venue may provide a healthy boost this weekend. Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to the leader of the Pepsi Max Crew ahead of the weekend. SPEEDCAFE: Five events into the Kelly Racing experience - what do you make of it all so far? GREG MURPHY: I’m really enjoying the whole process. It always takes a bit of time (to become competitive with a new team), you never want it to... certainly a few years ago I think it was easier to change without encountering too many speed bumps. But now the competition is so bloody good, and there’s too many guys who are so comfortable in their cars and doing a great job, you just can’t jump to another team and have it the way you want it straight up. It’s a different car with different idiosyncrasies that are completely different to what I’ve had before. But I really think we’re making some forward progress and that we’re learning a lot. I’m really enjoying working in the environment here I like the way the guys are running the show. I’m really relaxed about it and feeling good. We had another good test day last week, and I really feel that things are progressing in the right direction. SPEEDCAFE: How much of the changeover process is about getting used to the new hardware and how to drive it, and how much is about getting used to the people? MURPHY: It’s really a mix - you’ve got to get it all right to be up the front. I’ve worked with a lot of the guys here before and know them reasonably well, so that hasn’t been a problem. It’s really been about getting used to the hardware and the different ideas.

They have some good ideas and some focus on areas that have been really helpful and beneficial to me. I’ve learnt some stuff in the last little while, which is always interesting. You’ve got to always understand that you don’t know everything and that you’re always learning. SPEEDCAFE: We’ve seen the visiting teams find success at both Winton and at Queensland Raceway in recent years. Why do you think that is? MURPHY: I think if you look at the teams that are winning consistently, it doesn’t matter where they go, they are going to be competitive. HRT have often had a good run up in Queensland and Triple Eight have had a good run down here (Winton)... but I don’t know, I think it’s just the way it works out. It doesn’t mean a lot that it’s a home track these days, because if your car is working well and you’re comfortable in it, then you’re going to be fast regardless of the environment. We have some very different circuits with different grip levels and bits and pieces, but you’ve still got some consistent factors in a few cars and a few teams that mean they’re hard to beat anywhere. SPEEDCAFE: Can it be a disadvantage to race at your home track? Can you become locked into solutions to problems that you find in testing that don’t necessarily work on a race weekend? MURPHY: Yeah, I think that’s a very valid point. It’s happened to me before, you go testing here and have a really good day and think you’re onto something, but then go to the next race meeting and you’re rubbish. Finding the consistency is really hard. The team as a whole had some good results in New Zealand, but we went to Perth and were all struggling, until the last race where we ran a little better. I think Perth really proved how hard it is to put a car on the track on both tyres that is consistent and fast. It’s an incredibly difficult thing to do. For the soft tyre, trying to get it to live and have that longevity with it is a box that you need to unlock. We feel we’ve improved our soft tyre performance after our test. The weekend will tell us either way.

Self-billed as ‘The Nationa’s Action Track,’ the tight and twisty rural layout features a range of slow corners which combine to make Winton the slowest circuit on the V8 Supercar calendar. Consisting of a total of 12 corners linked by short straights, it was lengthened by a kilometre in 1997. With so many slow corners, having a car that can be kind to its rear tyres is crucial, particularly in the longer races. V8 Supercars Lap Records Qualifying 2010 Race 2009

W

inton is the test track for all of the Victorian teams, so it’ll be very interesting to see how the weekend pans out.

We’ve got 28 soft tyres to play with through qualifying and the two races. With one-stop on Saturday and two-stops on Sunday we’ll certainly have enough to get through. While almost all of the local teams tested at Winton last week, it’s still very hard to predict the form heading into the weekend. We were happy after a pre-Winton test last year, but when we arrived for the race meeting it was a completely different track, and we were two seconds slower! We had a great balance the week before, but all of a sudden we had understeer. Last week they’d had a drifting competition there the day before we arrived, and the track had so much rubber build-up on it that we just didn’t know what was going to happen over the day. Rubber build-up is going to be a big issue this weekend. In Perth, if you went off-line late in the race you’d lose a couple of seconds a lap just trying to clean up your tyres. There were only 14 cars testing at Winton last week, and we only ran softs for half of the

day because we only had two sets - but the amount of rubber was unbelievable. We have run the softs at Winton for the last two years now, but the rubber-build up seems to be getting worse. The balls of rubber that we’re seeing around the cars are basketball-sized. Everything from little pieces to quite big chunks are getting chucked into belts and all sorts of things. In Hamilton the amount of rubber in the radiators was significant. Despite the low ambient temperature, overheating could be a real issue at Winton due to the rubber build up, and the fact that you don’t get much high-speed air to the radiators. The rubber can have a negative effect on the racing as well, as late in the race it’s making it very difficult to go offline and make a pass. Strategy Last year we saw Courtney stop on Lap 12 or thereabouts, and almost everybody stopped soon after that. He made quite a good gain doing that. In terms of tyre life, I don’t think we’ll see the sort of degradation at Winton that we saw in Perth, but it probably won’t be that far away. Obviously the more competitive the championship is the more the drivers have to push the cars, which hurts the tyres.

Track position has traditionally been very important at Winton, although Courtney made it look easy to overtake last year when he had a quick car - he did all his passing into Turn 11 and Turn 3. I think we’ll see the Triple Eight chassis strong in the Turns 7-11 switchback area, where you really rely on the grip from the rear of the cars. What we’re seeing is the rear going away, so they don’t change direction very well without a lot of oversteer. In Perth we saw people giving away positions to run the first five laps of their stint a little slower to conserve tyre life. I don’t think we’ll see that so much at Winton. Weather Rain is being predicted for Saturday and Sunday, so we’ll get through Friday on the softs and see what happens from there. It’s a while since we’ve actually had a wet race at Winton. We had one that started wet and dried out (2007), and we ran for a long time on wets. In the pouring rain it doesn’t drain well - there are a couple of corners where it builds up quite a bit. There are a number of corners, like Turn 1, where a few years ago probably only three cars could cut the kerb there. Now everyone can do it, but the filling behind it is just dirt, so it gets all over the circuit very very quickly which is even worse in the wet. In the rain we see water collecting at Turn 1, around

the inside of Turn 4, and at the complex at the other end. It drains reasonably well but it doesn’t dry too quickly unless there’s any sort of wind. We saw more competition in the wet tyre races in Hamilton than we did in the dry, so it’ll be a lot of fun if it’s wet. Adjustments If we know it’s going to stay wet, there’s a fair bit we can do to change the cars to make them a little softer and find more grip. But really it comes down to how long it will be wet for. If you change the car for a solid wet race and it dries out, you’ll really struggle - even more so than if you have a dry car in the wet. It’s a bit of a gamble, and it can depend on your qualifying position. When the conditions are changeable the in-car anti-roll bar adjusters take on extra importance. Tyre pressures are vital as well, because the difficulty can be in generating tyre temperature. Pitlane The pitlane is fairly busy at Winton, and with the length of the pitlane, if you’re 40s or so behind the leaders, then you can easily go a lap down. It’s a funny old place, the pits are very cramped - you certainly don’t want to have all the cars in there at once! It was a real lottery in the Safety Car periods there last year.

A step too far

W

hen a company wishes to alter one of its products, it usually proves wise to do a bit of market research first.

Giving a select number of consumers a preproduction version of your revised product is clearly an effective way of doing that. Heading into this weekend’s fifth event of the 2011 V8 Supercars Championship, one can’t help but feel that the Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series is currently being used for a bit of old fashioned product testing. No, I’m not talking about championship teams running development parts on their Fujitsu entries. What I am talking about, are driving standards. As the V8 Supercars business has grown over the last decade or so, it has happily followed NASCAR’s lead in many areas, from car construction techniques to event promotion. One avenue that hasn’t been explored in Australia is what the Americans quaintly refer to as ‘boys have at it.’ The idea of letting the drivers sort on-track scuffles between themselves without the intervention of stewards or Driving Standards Observers - which the above phrase apparently refers to - isn’t without its merits. Nobody likes sport to be dominated by the referees, and not surprisingly, a bit of rivalry is good for generating a bit of hype.

image. It is hard enough to convince some of the more hardened observers that motor racing is a sport at the best of times, forget about explaining pre-meditated take-outs.

Unfortunately, the run-ins between Paul Morris and Nick Percat in the recent Fujitsu Series races at Barbagallo Raceway were quite frankly a blight on the sport.

The only penalty issued to Morris for his actions at Barbagallo was a drive-through penalty (his exclusion from the results was for ignoring the drive-through, not for his direct conduct with Percat).

Watching a car wobble out of pitlane a lap down and then intentionally ruin another’s race was about a good a look for V8 Supercars as players urinating on police stations is for rugby.

V8 Supercars may well be giving Morris some leeway to gauge the fan and media reaction to such tactics, but I sincerely hope we don’t see this sort of behaviour start to creep into the main show.

There are many sporting arguments against encouraging the self-policing philosophy, especially in the Fujitsu Series, where the races are short, the events are few and the budgets are tight.

We want entertaining racing, not racing entertainment.

But the main argument against it is undoubtedly

DID YOU KNOW? Underlining the competitiveness of the V8 Supercars Championship, there have now been 10 different race winners in the last 15 races across the end of 2010 and the start of 2011. Since Craig Lowndes’ win on the Saturday at Symmons Plains last year, only Jamie Whincup (three) and James Courtney (two) have been repeat race winners in the V8 Supercars Championship. The other drivers to win races are Mark Winterbottom, Paul Dumbrell, Lee Holdsworth, Garth Tander, Rick Kelly, Shane van Gisbergen and Jason Bright. Extending the number to the last 18 races (including Bathurst and the two Gold Coast races last year), that number increases to 13 different winners with Mark Skaife, Cameron McConville and Steve Owen all claiming success. Much is made of the perceived ‘home track advantage’ that Victorian teams have at Winton, but recent results certainly paint a different story. Queensland-based teams have won nine of the last 15 V8 Supercar races at Winton since 2003.

In the last seven races since 2008, a Victorian team has only won one race – Garth Tander for Toll Holden Racing Team in Race 3 of 2008. Both TeamVodafone and Jim Beam Racing have scooped the pools at Winton in recent years, picking up three race wins each.

This year’s Winton event is effectively the second anniversary for the soft tyre in V8 Supercar racing, as it made its debut at the Victorian circuit in 2009. The Dunlop Soft tyre will again be in play this weekend, with both races being run exclusively on the softer option rubber. Each car will have 28 Soft tyres to use for qualifying and the weekend’s two races. Saturday’s Race 10 of the V8 Supercars Championship will be over 40 laps (or end 1 lap after 5.15pm AEST), while Sunday’s race is longer at 67 laps (or to end 1 lap after 2.48pm AEST).

A total of 21 endurance co-drivers will be on show at Winton, which is the first of four events to feature Friday practice time for those competing at Phillip Island and Bathurst. As has been the case in previous years, teams can nominate one additional driver per car to take part in Practice 1 and 2 at Winton. For cars sitting in the top half of the V8 Supercars Championship, only a nominated endurance driver can drive their car in the first two practice sessions. There will also be co-driver practice at Hidden Valley, Townsville and Queensland Raceway. Warren Luff, Alex Davison and Michael Caruso are all celebrating their 50th ATCC/V8 Supercars Championship event start at this weekend. Luff, right, has been on the V8 Supercar scene for the longest of the three, making his V8 Supercars Championship debut way back in the 1999 Queensland 500. After driving with Dick Johnson Racing in 2004 and Britek Motorsport in 2006, Luff is in just his third full-time season in the main series, hence the long period of time taken to rack up 50 championship event starts. Davison debuted at Sandown in 2004 and is in his third straight season with IRWIN Racing. Caruso debuted at Bathurst in 2006 and is in his fourth straight season with Fujitsu Racing/GRM.

The area is a beautiful place; there are some great wineries around the district. It’s an area that can get extremely hot, but also extremely cold because it’s not far from the snowy mountains. As a tourist area it’s a fantastic place and really a gateway to what rural Victoria has to offer.

The event at Winton always attracts a big crowd because people come from everywhere around, from Shepparton, Wangaratta and even Albury. The racing is always very close and it is quite a difficult track for the V8 Supercars. We don’t use top gear and the circuit is quite narrow, which makes it hard to pass on, but the soft tyre gives us that grip back and makes it very entertaining.

EXERCISE OF THE EVENT: THE HAMSTRING STRETCH Just because you’re on the road doesn’t mean your workout schedule needs to suffer. It’s easy to turn a hotel room or bedroom into a mini-gym by completing some simple exercises, such as push-ups. Here are my three simple steps to a successful hamstring stretch. 1) Place your foot on a sturdy chair or bench

2) Lean forward from the hips until you feel a stretch

3) Hold the stretch for 30 second and swap legs

THE BAGMAN’S SAY Absent during his title run last season, the erratic, capitulating James Courtney appears to have returned. Is effectively out of the 2011 championship hunt after just four events, and has not seen the podium since Abu Dhabi. That said, a podium result on his home track at Winton is certainly achievable.
