STYLISH STUFF FOR SUMMER By Adele Cygelman | www.domain-la.com
Over the past decade the outdoor furnishings industry has undergone a revolution as powder-coated aluminum frames and man-made woven fibers have made it possible to evolve beyond bulky lounge chairs and beige upholstery. Now we have outdoor rooms that are used year-round, maintenance-free outdoor fabrics that work on indoor furniture (think dogs and kids) and lightweight furnishings that are weather-and bug-proof. Niche is an elegant new showroom that showcases a collection of contemporary European outdoor furniture by leading designers such as Paola Lenti, Hella Jongerius and Karim Rashid. Patricia Urquiola’s new Maia Collection for Kettal includes the Egg Swing and Daybed, which rotates 360 degrees with a remote control. David Cooke, a former mechanical engineer, turned his frustration at the lack of high-quality fire pits into Cooke Contemporary Furniture. The self-described “flame aficionado” has a factory in Anaheim that fashions stainless steel into customizable bases for his line of fire pit tables that come with granite or steel tops and are guaranteed to last a lifetime. Janice Feldman has long been at the forefront of the outdoor furnishing revolution with her company Janus et Cie. She is now producing her own woven fiber designs, which include Triad, a Y-shaped bench that can seat 6 and comes in 4 finishes. “Triad is a serviceable, well-crafted bench with a novel shape,” Feldman says. “But it’s also a piece of modern sculpture and minimal form at its most expressive.”
Interior designer Linda Allen’s new line of lamps called Live. Anywhere is a refreshingly modern table lamp specifically designed for the outdoors. The cordless, rechargeable lamps use 7-watt LED bulbs and provide 10 to 18 hours of light with 3 different settings. Perfect for alfresco dinner parties. Perennials’ new line of solution-dyed acrylic fabrics called Color Pops comes in 12 vibrant colors, including lime green, mandarin orange and periwinkle blue. All Perennials fabrics are resistant to soil, water and UV rays, have a NanoSeal finish for extra protection and come with a 3-year warranty against fading.
