The idea that most architecture is simply background noise in our every day lives is obscure, yet accurate. At the same time, it is impossible for a building to not make some sort of impact on its inhabitants, for better or worse. With that being said, this project seeks to make its users aware of its existence, aware of how it makes them feel, and ultimately to bring the discomfort associated with a visit to the courthouse to an even calm.

Similar to the layered and constantly changing social justice system, by experiencing these forms from different moments in space, our experience and understanding of what we see is always unique.

MULTI-PURPOSE The large planes in this project find many uses, whether it is to reduce distraction from the outside in a courtroom, guide people along a path, articulate an idea, or to inspire awe.

RELIEF A third floor garden between the planes acts as a break area for the public, employees, and also as a way to bring something agreeably fresh and peaceful into an often negatively viewed institution.

P E R S P E C T I V E

Captured by the large, angular planes that define the courthouse, this marks the beginning of a jouney of perspective ultimately concluding in the courtroom. As one enters the courthouse, they are met with an undulating surface, represented in the image below. The top of the bridge represents a perspectival shift, where what was previously understood to be a rough object is now the opposite. A gold door emerges as the final interaction before the entrance to the courtroom, casting a reflection of itself onto the floor, recalling the previous undulating form through a new medium.

Courtroom The courtroom is designed to feel balanced, and not to overwhelm. A reminder of the “planes� that create the building stands as a monolith, blocking views outside the curtain wall, as privacy and focus are essential here.


NORTH BEACH VILLAGE, FL FALL 2016

MAGNETIC TOWER M U L T I F A M I L Y

H O U S I N G

North Beach Village, Florida, is a complicated barrier island facing complicated dilemmas. The rising Atlantic Ocean, a decaying Intracoastal shoreline, and a suffering neighborhood in between. Magnetic Tower is a project about attraction, a project about revitalization, and a means to draw life back into a neighborhood that desparately needs it, while simultaneously remaining resilient to the negative effects of climate change on an island with a population that increases every week.



BUSY SHORELINE The buildings highlighted in red are the center of what is North Beach Village tourism. Activity happens along the major highway (A1A) and extends out into the ocean.

CALL FOR REVITALIZATION The middle of North Beach Village lacks the energy that can be felt along the Atlantic coast line. Investors in the neighborhood are interested in bringing life back into the islands core.

A PLACE YOU HAVE TO VISIT

MOMENTUM / RE-ORIENTATION

By constructing a building similar in scale to the coastal buildings on the opposite side of the neighborhood, the two can then be connected by a major pedestrian axis - thus circulating visitors through the neighborhood.

By reorienting the building as it moves upward it allows for the base of the building to respond to the axis of the canal and the neighborhood, and creates panoramic views of both the Intracoastal and North Beach Village.

DONALD JUDD MUSEUM OF SCULPTURE


The Crossroads District in Kansas City, Missouri is a very unique place. It survives on the idea that creation reigns, and that curious exploration is the only way to truly discover the world. On First Friday’s, artists’ work pours out into the streets, offering a direct interaction with their creations, though lacking the ability to push their visitors to search for, discover, and create their own experience.

The Donald Judd Museum seeks to re-invent the way that explorers of the Crossroads find and view artwork. Ultimately, this project offers a disruption to the way that users of the Crossroads District discover the art that they adore, and something new and disrupting might be exactly what such a quickly growing grassroots district needs.


PASS Re-imagining the way that explorers find artwork in the crossroads district, this series of diagrams examines the concept of window shopping. The diagram above shows the “pass� and the curiosity of the passer-byer.

ENTRANCE By repeating the motion, the entrance is created, representing the moment that a window shopper decides to enter the store.

FORMAL INVITATION By bringing down one side of the form, an invitation is sent to pedestrians, asking them to travel around the building in search of the artwork that they saw in the window.

FULFILLMENT The final diagram in this series represents the fulfillment of the explorer, as they have been encouraged to engage in an adventure, adding a new dimension to the way that art is experienced.

PLANS A simple building that dedicates the entirety of its main floor to displaying simple installations acts not only as a gallery but also a place to gather for events - with a mezzanine level directly above and parking for employees below.

‘TIS THE SEASON One of the most enticing things about the midwest are the destinct and vibrant seasons, which completely transform the way we use and perceive our built environment.

SENSORY PAVILION DIRTWORKS DESIGN + BUILD STUDIO

The Audio-Reader Sensory Garden, a secret garden nestled into the topography of Mount Oread, is a source of pride for the Audio-Reader Network. “The garden…is filled with flowers, herbs, and accessories to delight the senses. Plants with interesting textures, such as Lamb’s Ear, intermingle with fragrant leaves of mint and lavender. The sounds of wind chimes join the chirping of birds visiting the feeders. Plants are in raised beds, making a hands-on experience easy for pedestrians and wheelchair users. A winding brick pathway leads from the house, past the raised beds, to the gazebo.”

The gazebo that once stood at the end of the Sensory Garden had fallen into disrepair, and so began the Sensory Pavilion project. The first step in our journey to reinvisioning a new stopping point in the garden was to do away with the old - reclaiming its materials and repurposing them to our advantage.

Recognition for the Sensory Pavilion The Sensory Pavilion was recognized by ArchDaily as “one of the best student design build projects worldwide in 2016”.
