2013-14 BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

SEASON OUTLOOK So what’s in store for the Sioux Falls Cougar this season?

The University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball team got its first taste of the NSIC last season and didn’t really like the way things panned out. It wasn’t a bad year – the Cougars went 12-15 (8-14 NSIC) and knocked crosstown rival Augustana in the Vikings’ first-ever trip to the Stewart Center. But it was the first time in fifth-year Coach Chris Johnson’s tenure that the Cougars didn’t notch a 20-win campaign and with the loss of multi-year starters David Maxwell, James Rader and A.J. Holland, it feels more like the Cougars are starting over than building on their first season competing in the Northern Sun.

The backcourt will be the strength of USF all season, and with good reason. The case can be made that the Cougars will have the one of best backcourts in the NSIC South Division. Everything starts with senior guard Derek Brown. The team’s top returning scorer at 10.1 points per game, the Clark (S.D.) native led the Cougars in scoring five times last season and enters his final collegiate campaign with 662 career points, 138 rebounds and has drained 126-of-319 three point attempts (39.5%).

The Cougars play host to Wisconsin-Superior (NCAA DIII) on November 9 and will open NSIC play at home three short weeks later against Southwest Minnesota State. With a month of practice in mind, fifth year head coach Chris Johnson has a good idea of what each player can do, and what he can expect to see.

The list of NSIC guards who are as versatile as Brown is quite short. His ability to attack the rim and finish through contact is among the best in the country, he’s an excellent passer, and for someone who is 6’0″, Brown is an excellent rebounder. He is also a pitbull on defense (team-high 37 steals in ’12-’13) and the exact kind of player that you want leading your basketball team.

But there’s nothing quite like seeing it in a game, with uniforms sparkling and the lights of Stewart Center reflecting on the polished court. There are some things that just can’t be seen unless they happen in a game, and while you can’t gauge the upcoming season based on what you’ve seen in practice, everybody’s eager to get an idea of what they can expect from the Cougars this year.

With so many athletically talented newcomers on the roster, Brown may not need to average the 10.1 points, 1.2 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and five three-point attempts per game that he averaged as a junior, he certainly has the talent to do it again. “Derek Brown has proven to be a very dependable player in the NSIC,” said Coach Johnson. “He is one of the best shooters in the league, but I am most proud of his improvement on the defensive side of the ball, and in his overall floor game.”

Which of the 10 newcomers will have the biggest impact? Will Johnson try to play more than one freshman at a time? Will Robert Goffney be able to sustain his intensity for a full season? Will Derek Brown always be on the positive side of his could-be smoking shooting?

Complementing Brown will be senior Robert Goffney. As anyone with some knowledge of Sioux Falls basketball knows, Goffney spent his first two seasons at Iowa Central CC and struggled early in Coach Johnson’s triangle offense, putting double-digits in the scoring

Answers might be discovered during its fourgame nonconference slate, but mostly, the first month is about testing rotations, discovering on-court chemistry and trying to prepare to square off against a strong SMSU team the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

column just twice in his first 17 games. Goffney blossomed into one of the better guards in the conference, posting doubledigits in six of the Cougars’ last 10 games and averaging 11.5 points and 1.8 assists during that stretch. He put his teammates on his back at Northern State, scoring a career-high 23 points—including 11-for-12 from the stripe—as USF nearly upset the high-seeded Wolves in the opening round of the NSIC postseason tournament.

“He played a major role for us last year, but his opportunities were more limited in the past because of our other bigs (Maxwell, Rader, Howard, and Bloch). Still, it’s the newcomers who figure to garner the most attention early from both fans and opposing coaches. Junior college transfers Charles Ward (Western Nebraska), Mahlon Jones (Hesston College) and Preston Rayburn (Lamar CC) all have a chance to be big contributors, while freshmen Kebu Johnson, Mack Johnson and Cutler Finneman should also figure into the rotation.

“With the graduation of A.J. Holland, James Rader, and David Maxwell, we lost a lot of on the floor and off the floor leadership,” said Johnson. “Naturally Rob Goffney and Derek Brown will be asked to fill these roles because they are senior guards who know exactly what we expect from our players.”

Ward is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound guard who averaged 20.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game in 31 appearances last season for the Western Nebraska Cougars. He posted double-figure scoring in all but three games en route to third team AllRegion IX accolades.

“We will also count on newcomer Mahlon Jones, and two true freshmen in Mack Johnson and Kebu Johnson to also log minutes at the shooting guard position,” said Johnson. “Mahlon and Kebu bring great athleticism to the position while Mack shoots the ball every bit as well as Derek.

Mahlon Jones earned third-team National Junior College Athletic Association All-American as a sophomore, who Johnson calls the fastest player he’s ever coached, while 6-6 Rayburn gives the Cougars much-needed size on the wing.

He added, “Senior Alex Robey and Charles Ward have also shown leadership so far this fall. It will be a process, but I am confident that we will have good leadership from within.” Of the returners, 6-foot-8 junior center Bryan Kielpinski is the other veteran Johnson figures to lean on the most. The Mandan, N.D., native averaged 4.0 points per game last year and is the Cougars’ top returning rebounder (2.3) and shot-blocker (1.0 per game).

Finneman was out most of the summer with a broken ankle, but Johnson noted that one of his most prized recruits had a very good fall and is in the mix for a starting spot. The St. Paul native will play both the 4 and 5 for the Cougars.

“Our frontcourt is anchored both offensively and defensively with Bryan Kielpinski ,” said Johnson. “He has improved as much as any player I have ever coached since he has been here.”

Mack Johnson was tabbed AP allstate, Star Tribune all-metro and St. Paul Pioneer Press All-East metro as a senior, as he led Roseville HS to 25-5

2013-14 BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

record and three straight conference championships. The most pleasant surprise of the preseason was the play of 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Jordan Stotts. “Jordan played very limited minutes last year and he came back this fall stronger but most importantly, with a lot more confidence,” said Johnson. “He has earned a role in our rotation, as he adds some different dimensions to us on both offense and defense.” The Cougar bench will feature several intriguing players, including Andy Hawkins, Alex Hair, Jon Nebelsick, Alex Lane, Grant Kellogg and Derek Hurt. USF’s four non-conference games are huge, because with how brutal the NSIC is, the team needs to get as many wins as possible before facing the MSU-Mankatos and Winona States of the world every weekend. The schedule sets up nicely, and there’s a good chance that Sioux Falls is 4-0 going into its conference opener versus Southwest Minnesota State. If the team can pull off two or three upsets, there’s a chance we see a Cougar squad that finishes much higher than its projected 10th place finish in the NSIC.

2013-14 BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Chris Johnson Head Coach 6th Season Bloomington, Minn. University of Sioux Falls head men’s basketball coach Chris Johnson begins his sixth season at the helm. Johnson became the 22nd USF head coach in 2008. Since taking over, Johnson has guided the Cougars to four 20-win seasons, three post-season appearances, two conference tournament championships and one regular season conference crown. USF is 101-59 (.631) during his tenure. In 2012-13, USF was 12-15 overall, 8-14 in conference play and competed in the program’s first-ever NSIC Tournament, nearly upsetting No. 2 seed Northern State in the first round. Johnson guided the Cougars to a huge 70-58 victory over Augustana, ending an 11-game losing streak to their cross-town rival which dated back to the 1994-95 season. He also became the fourth winningest coach in program history with his 99th win at USF last season. Coach Johnson’s ability to make adjustments and motivate his players was once again on display during the 2011-12 season. After a 1-6 start, USF went 19-3 in their final 22 games. Similar to several Cougar teams in 2011-12, the transitional year meant a travel-intensive schedule, typically featuring a road contest against an NCAA DI opponent. For basketball that team was Wyoming, and although it goes down as a loss, USF’s six-point defeat in the final minutes at Wyoming on December 16, 2011, is one that will be remembered for quite some time. In 2010-2011, Johnson led USF to another 20 win season and their second GPAC tournament championship in three years en route to being named the Hauff Mid America/ GPAC Coach of the Year. Johnson mentored three GPAC all-conference selections, including a second team selection in junior forward David Maxwell. Last season marked USF’s ninth 20+ win season of the decade. The 2009-2010 squad continued to build the program and for the ninth time in 10 seasons, USF can claim a 20 win season. The Cougars were a perfect 17-0 on their home court in the Stewart Center during the 2009-2010 season, on their way to a 25-10 overall record and 13-5 GPAC standing. Johnson coached the 2008-09 Cougars to a Sweet 16 appearance at the NAIA Men’s Division II National Basketball Tournament in Point Lookout, Missouri. The Cougars advanced to the tournament’s second round by upsetting third-seeded Cedarville University (Ohio), 66-63, in round one. USF’s magic run in the tournament ended in a loss to eventual national Runner-up College of the Ozarks. Despite the defeat, it marked the first time since 2004 that the Cougars advanced to the second round. Under Johnson’s direction, Sioux Falls won the 2008-09 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) postseason tournament championship. Sioux Falls won a remarkable four road games in eight days in the tournament to earn the GPAC’s second automatic bid to nationals. The postseason crown was the third in four years for USF. Before arriving in Sioux Falls, Johnson was the top assistant coach for three seasons at the University of North Dakota. Prior to joining the UND coaching staff, Johnson spent the 2004-05 season as head coach at Culver-Stockton College. In his lone season as head coach, Johnson led the Wildcats

to a 16-15 record, an improvement from the team’s 12-19 record the season prior to his arrival. He was named 2004-05 Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the team to the first home conference playoff game in program history. Prior to arriving at Culver-Stockton, Johnson served as an assistant coach at Minot State from 2001-04. Before that he served as an assistant at Minnesota State, Mankato (1999-2001) and Central College (1998-99) in Pella, Iowa. Johnson was a two-year starter as a guard, lettering four times, at Central College and graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He received a master’s degree in sports administration from Minnesota State, Mankato, in 2005. Johnson and his wife, Amy, have two daughters, Bailey and Taylor.

In two seasons with the Cougars, Kaeding has assisted the men’s basketball team to a 32-24 mark. In 2011-12, he helped USF achieve their fourth-straight 20-win season with an overall record of 20-9. During that season, the Cougars were a perfect 11-0 at home in the Stewart Center. As recruiting coordinator, Kaeding’s impact was also seen off the court. He has helped expand USF’s recruiting reach within the Midwest, across the country, and beyond the U.S. border. He played a major role in adding the first non-American student-athlete to play basketball at USF, as well as numerous other key recruits from across the country. Prior to USF, Kaeding served four seasons as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. The Mustangs won 62 games during his tenure and claimed the NSIC regular-season championship, an NCAA central regional region championship, and a berth in the NCAA DII Elite Eight in 2008-09. During the 2009-10 season, SMSU charged to a runner-up finish in the NSIC tournament. Kaeding helped the Mustangs to a top 25 national ranking in both seasons. Between stints at SMSU, He accepted a coaching position at Montana State University - Billings in the summer of 2009. During the summer of 2007, Kaeding entered the coaching profession by mentoring the 16 and 17-year old ECI Select West AAU team out of North Dakota. Two of Kaeding’s players garnered national attention and went on to play at the NCAA DI level, in the Pac-12 and Mountain West Conferences, respectively. A native of Fargo, N.D., Kaeding was a three-year letterwinner for the University of Mary. As a senior, he was a team captain for the Marauders and was selected to the 2006-07 NSIC All-Academic team. Kaeding graduated in the spring of 2007 with a double major in both accounting and business administration. He went on to complete his Master’s in Business Administration in 2009 from Southwest Minnesota State University.

2013-14 BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Dave Maxwell Assistant Coach 1st Season Parkston, S.D. Chris Johnson didn’t have look too hard to find his next graduate assistant coach. Cougar fans remember David Maxwell well. The 2013 USF graduate was a four-year team captain and four-year starter for Johnson and was part of back-to-back NAIA tournament teams in 2009-10 and 2010-2011. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with 989 points, 372 rebounds and 175 assists in 118 games played (77 starts). He went 292-for-358 (81.6%) from the free throw line and also drained 41 three-pointers. Maxwell’s best season came as a sophomore, where he averaged 11.3 points and nearly 5 rebounds for a Cougar squad that posted a 24-9 mark en route to the 2011 GPAC tournament crown. Maxwell tallied a career-high 21 points versus Nebraska Wesleyan (2011) and Dakota Wesleyan (2010) and pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds in the Cougars’ 2011 near-upset of the University of Wyoming (62-54). Maxwell prepped at Parkston High School (S.D.), where he was a four-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball. He was twotime South Dakota 11-B all-stater in basketball and garnered three straight all-conference nods as a Parkston Trojan. Senior point guard Chrissy Strassburg steered the Cougars’ offense last season and averaged 5.5 points, 2.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. In her three years with the Cougars, Strassburg has talled 362 points, 176 rebounds, and 122 assists.

The Cougars will wrap up their non-conference slate with a home game against Nebraska Kearney of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Lopers (MIAA) finished the 2012-13 season with a record of 7-18. USF will then open the NSIC portion of their schedule with three homes games against Southwest Minnesota State (4-25), Wayne State (17-10), and 2013 Final Four participant Augustana (28-7). The Vikings ended the 2012-13 season as the No. 4 rated team in Division II and also claimed the NSIC Conference tournament crown. The Cougars faced the Vikings twice during the 2012-13 season falling both times by a combined score of 175-122.

Jaicee Ulmer was the first guard off the bench and action in all 27 Cougar contests, averaging 28.5 minutes per game. She recorded a career-high 18 points on the road last season against Southwest Minnesota State. Ulmer averaged 7.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game for USF during the 2012-13 season. Sophomore Marie Malloy saw limited minutes as a freshman due to a high school ACL injury, but was still able to average 1.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game with an average of 8.1 of work.

On Friday, January 3, USF will play host to Minnesota State-Moorhead. The Cougars faced the Dragons twice during the 2012-13 season, falling both times. The first matchup of the two teams ended with an eight-point Cougar loss. The second matchup would come in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament where USF lost by 12 points.

Returning Forwards

Three-year starter and 2012-13 NSIC first teamer Laura Johnson is back for her senior campaign and will lead the USF frontcourt during the 2013-14 season. Johnson put up 13.3 points per game last year and ended last season just 34 points shy of the 1,000 Point Club.

The Cougars will close out league play with two home games against Minnesota State-Mankato and Concordia St. Paul. The Golden Bears won the 2012-13 NSIC regular season crown and also qualified for the NCAA tournament where they fell to Augustana in first round action. The Golden Bears finished the season as the No. 24 rated team in Division II.

Johnson’s 35.44 minutes per game average was second only to Katie Wolff of Winona State (35.65) and she finished third in defensive rebounds per game (6.93). She ended the year shooting 86.8% (59 of 68) from the free throw line, fourth-best in

The Cougars proved they could compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with wins over three current conference members, including their first win over Sioux Falls rival Augustana College since 1988. The 2011 team’s win total was remarkable, but the way in which they won may have been more impressive. The Cougars won by 20 points or more 10 times last season to finish the year with a +16.8 scoring margin. During the 2010-2011 season, Traphagen coached the Cougars to a school record 27 wins en route to a NAIA quarterfinal appearance. Augustana also boasted a 20-game winning streak in 06-07 and was the No. 2-ranked team in the North Central Region. Prior to joining Augustana, Traphagen served as a graduate assistant at Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., where he earned a master’s degree in sports administration. A rt .

How simple brick and mortar translates into a passion for competition. The University of Sioux Falls Sports Complex was designed to give everyone the best seat in the house.

When it comes to athletics at the University of Sioux Falls, there are two places to look. And Sioux Falls Construction is proud to have contributed to both. It all began with renovation to the Stewart Center, including the addition of a foyer that serves as a majestic entrance to each USF basketball game. It continues today with construction of the University of Sioux Falls Sports Complex, a state-of-the-art facility designed to bring out the best in each athlete that steps onto the field. From management to construction, Sioux Falls Construction did more than build buildings. We stayed true to the original vision and passion of the University of Sioux Falls.

A flood of light helps illuminate the foyer at USF’s most storied sports facility – the Stewart Center.

With over 100 years of helping build up the region, Sioux Falls Construction has the capabilities and discipline to complete any project on time and within budget.
