Joel McCartney Head Coach Papillion, Neb. Graceland College (1987) Third season

Joel McCartney enters his third season at the helm of the Cougar volleyball program. McCartney currently boasts a career record of 373-198 (.653). He looks to build upon a season where he steered the University of Sioux Falls program through the NCAA Division II process and recorded five league wins in their first season as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Cougars went 14-16 in McCartney’s second year and improved its offensive efficiency and its backline defense under his guidance. The team finished with an average of 11.2 assists per set, the best mark in five years for the Cougars, and hit .215, a 20-point improvement from the 2011 season and the fifth-best hitting clip in the NSIC. USF also improved its kills average from 11.5 in 2011 to 11.9 in 2012 and finished fourth in the league with 170 total service aces. McCartney’s team also proved themselves in the classroom, earning the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2011-12. In addition, all eight Cougars that were eligible for the Fall 2012 NSIC All-Academic volleyball team received the honor. In McCartney’s first year as head coach, the Cougars finished 3rd in the Locos Grill Division II Transitional Tournament and closed out the 2011 campaign by winning seven of their last ten matches. A Cougar volleyball program that had struggled offensively the past few years racked up 1,764 total kills-the highest total for a USF squad since the 2003 season. The 2011 season will also be remembered as a collection of fantastic individual accomplishments. Freshman Emily Johnson recorded 451 kills, which is the fourth-best single season in school history. Junior college transfer Chanda Goedken (Kirkwood) also etched her name in the record book, posting 417 kills for the sixth-best single season mark. Freshman Charlee Nelson put together the best year for a Cougar setter since the 1999 season, as she tallied 977 assists (sixth-highest ever). The Cougars continued the tradition of excellence in the classroom as 10 student-athletes received the 2011-12 USF Student-Athlete All-Academic award and the team was awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Associations (AVCA) Team Academic Award for sporting a 3.55 GPA in the classroom. McCartney came to USF in July 2011 after a four-year stint as the head coach of the University of Georgia volleyball program. In McCartney’s tenure, the Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 62-55. McCartney’s time at Georgia concluded with his career record standing at 344-155. In his first season at UGA in 2007, McCartney led the Bulldogs to the biggest turnaround in program history, as that year’s squad posted a 17-13 record following just a six-win campaign in 2006. The 2007 Bulldogs also posted eight conference victories, the most league wins for the program since 2004. Georgia’s 17 total wins and eight SEC wins surpassed the combined total number of overall and conference wins from both the 2005 and 2006 seasons. 4

In 2008, Georgia went 17-14 with a 10-10 record in SEC action under the guidance of McCartney, who entered the season poised to reach a career milestone of his own. With the Bulldogs’ 3-0 sweep of the Furman Paladins on August 31 in the Georgia Bulldog Invitational Tournament, McCartney achieved his 300th collegiate-career head coaching victory. The highlight of the Bulldogs’ season was an upset of the No. 8-ranked Florida Gators. The win by the Bulldogs snapped a 45-match losing streak to the Gators, which dated back to 1990. The 2009 Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 17-14 including an 8-12 SEC mark which gave Georgia a 5th place finish in the conference, UGA’s highest finish in the SEC since 2004. In league action, Georgia captured its eight victories by sweeping the two-match, season-series with Auburn and Mississippi State while splitting series with Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss and South Carolina. In 2010, Georgia opened the season on a six-match winning streak including a 4-0 mark to win the Deacon Invitational tournament title. The Bulldogs went on to carry an 8-4 mark into the start of the conference season and would pull off a five-set upset over 20th-ranked Tennessee in late September.

Prior to his tenure at Georgia, McCartney coached Winthrop University University of Georgia (2007-10) (S.C.) to a 167-49 record in six years, including a 34-3 campaign in 2006. Head Coach 62-55 overall McCartney’s Eagles captured five consecutive Big South Conference titles and made five straight appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament. Winthrop University (2002-07) Head Coach McCartney, a native of Papillion (Neb.), began his coaching career in 1991 167-49 overall as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky University. He served in that capacity 5 consecutive Big South Conference titles for two seasons before accepting the first assistant coaching position at 5 straight NCAA Tournament appearances Indiana State University, which he held from 1993-95. Bellevue University (1999-2002) McCartney then took over the head coaching position of the Nebraska Head Coach Tornados, a National Volleyball Association Professional League team, 115-51 overall from 1996-98. His 1998 team captured the NVA national championship. Winningest coach in school history During his stint as the Nebraska Tornados head coach, McCartney also served as the head coach at Bellevue University (1996-2000). He led the NAIA program to a 115-51 overall record, recruited and coached several academic and athletic All-Americans and brought the program to national prominence. In only four short seasons, McCartney became the winningest volleyball coach in Bellevue University history. McCartney left Bellevue University to return to an assistant position at the Division I level. In 2001, he accepted a role at the University of Oklahoma as the first-assistant coach. His responsibility under the mentorship of his former college teammate, Kalani Mahi, was assisting in the on-court training and recruitment of student-athletes. McCartney also played on the collegiate and professional levels. He was both an Academic and Collegiate Club All-American while playing for Graceland College from 1983-87. He went on to play for the USAV Open National Champions, Nike Molten, in 1988 before competing professionally from 1989-91 in Umea, Sweden for Team IKSU. A 1983 graduate of Papillion High School (Neb.), McCartney holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Economics and Finance from Graceland College and a master’s degree in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University. ASSISTANT COACH- 3RD SEASON BELLEVUE UNIVERSITY ‘96 Andrea McCartney enters her third season as the assistant volleyball coach for the USF Cougars. She has fifteen years of assistant coaching experience at the professional, collegiate and the junior development levels. A native of Kansas City, Mo., she most recently served as a volunteer coach for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2008-10. In her three years with the program, the Bulldogs posted an overall mark of 45-42. McCartney previously spent five seasons as an assistant coach for the Winthrop Eagles from 2001-06. Prior to her tenure at Winthrop, McCartney served as a volunteer coach at the University of Oklahoma in 2000. McCartney served as an assistant coach at Bellevue University for the four years (1996-99) that her husband, head coach Joel McCartney, led the program. The two have joined efforts in coaching since 1996. She also served as an assistant to the Nebraska Tornados, a NVA league professional team, in 1998. One of McCartney’s great passions is the development of youth volleyball and seeing youth athletes succeed. Throughout her coaching career, McCartney has held several youth volleyball clinics and also served as a junior development head coach for the Midlands Volleyball Club from 1997-99.

ALYSSA CHAMBERS

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH - 2ND SEASON SIOUX FALLS ‘11 In her second year at USF is Alyssa Chambers, who will work as the graduate assistant for the volleyball program. She will assist with equipment, video and travel arrangements. Chambers should be familiar to Cougar volleyball fans, as she was a four-year starter at USF and graduated as the school’s career blocks leader. A two-time team captain, she also ranks in the top-5 in school history in matches played. As a junior, she led the Cougars in blocks and earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors. Chambers finished her collegiate career with 788 kills and school record 566 total blocks. The Sioux Falls native starred at Roosevelt High School, where she earned all-state honors and broke the state record for blocks at the South Dakota state volleyball tournament (22 in three days). Chambers holds a bachelor’s of the arts degree in English and secondary education from the University of Sioux Falls. She is the daughter of Lorri and J.C. Chambers and has two sisters, Carley, who played basketball at Sterling College and Haley, a sophomore outside hitter at Northwestern College (Iowa).

McCartney was a four-year letter-winner (1992-96) at Bellevue University, where she earned MCAC First Team and NAIA All-Region honors at the outside hitter position. She also played one season for the Nebraska Tornados in the NVA Professional League as a defensive specialist in 1997. She is married to Cougars’ head volleyball coach Joel McCartney. The couple has two children, a daughter Kate (9), and son James (7).

2012 (JUNIOR): One of two Cougars to play in all 108 sets, including 30-of-30 starts at setter…amassed 1,036 assists and her 9.59 per set average was eighth in the NSIC…1,036 assists ranks her sixth on USF’s all-time single season charts…stood fifth on the team with a 1.72 digs per set ratio… slapped 27 aces, third-most on the Cougars…tallied five double-doubles to tie for second with Emily Johnson…surpassed the 40-assist plateau on nine occasions...highlighted by a career-high 56 assist, 10 digs performance against Upper Iowa where she also served up three aces (10/6)…notched 50 assists, six kills and four dig versus Jamestown College (8/31)…distributed 42 assists, corralled six digs and added a career-best seven kills in a four-set win over Mary (10/20)…led USF’s offense with a .714 attack percentage in a win against Mayville State, where she notched five kills on seven swings with zero errors…finished with 74 kills and a .256 hitting clip…also tossed up 22 total blocks which ranked her fifth on the team. 2011 (SOPHOMORE, St. Leo’s,): Amassed a team-high 551 set assists (5.62/set) during the 2011 season and led the team with 41 service aces...also tallied 12 block assists. 2010 (FRESHMAN, St. Leo’s): Saw time in 18 matches (46 sets), recorded 230 assists (5.0/set), 47 digs, three kills and 13 service aces. HIGH SCHOOL: Named to the All-District Academic Team in both 2007 and 2008 at Clear Creek HS (Texas)...selected as both Houston Chronicle and MaxPreps AVCA Player of the Week...her Wildcats’ squad won the 5A Region III Championship in 2008 and finished as the 5A state runner-ups. The University of Sioux Falls volleyball team continued its push toward joining the region’s elite programs with a 2012 campaign that featured team and individual growth. The Cougars went 14-16 overall and 5-15 in their first season of competition in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. USF will open the season under the direction of third-year head coach Joel McCartney. “Our first NSIC season was really pretty thrilling,” said McCartney. “Although our record was not as great as we wanted it to be, we certainly understand more about competing in the best league in the country.” 2012 In Review USF’s 14 overall wins and five conference wins are the sixth and fifth best marks, respectively, in school history. The team finished 13th in the NSIC, one spot higher than the Cougars were projected to finish in the 2012 preseason coaches’ poll. The team’s success came against a tough schedule that featured four conference opponents that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Championship. Along with six-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul, the field of 64 in the national tournament included league foes Southwest Minnesota State, Wayne State and Minnesota Duluth. Six of the Cougars’ 16 losses on the season came against that group. “The league is so talented and one element that became very clear is how deep that talent goes in the NSIC,” McCartney added. “Every night is a great match with a lot of opportunity for our program to grow and become aware of our strengths and where we need to get better.” During the team’s 2012 non-conference schedule, USF dropped just six sets in 10 matches and opened the season 9-1— the best start in program history. Along the way, the Cougars collected a handful of all-tournament accolades with senior Sarah Kohler (Labor Day Classic), sophomore Samantha Lovell (Labor Day Classic) and senior Chanda Goedken (Avila University Invitational) being recognized for their respective performances. Playing the toughest schedule in school history, USF opened league play with three straight losses to No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul, No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State and No. 3 Minnesota Duluth. The Cougars notched a sweep of St. Cloud State at home on September 22 for their first NSIC victory. In October, USF took three of four league matches against Bemidji State, Minot State and Mary before knocking off Winona State in a five-set thriller for their fifth conference victory. Junior setter Alexa Reed grabbed the reins of the Cougars’ offense and directed the team to a .215 attack percentage, a 20-point improvement from 2011 and the second-best hitting percentage in school history. It was also the fifth-best hitting clip in the NSIC and ranked the Cougars 58th out of the 277 NCAA D-II programs. During the year, Reed set to a pair of all-time marks with a .583 hitting percentage versus Harris Stowe, the highest in program history, and a .564 figure against Dakota Wesleyan, the second-best efficiency for any team. Personally, Reed established a career high with 56 assists versus Upper Iowa. That total is tied for the third-best by a USF setter in school history. The Cougars said goodbye to five seniors at season’s end: Chanda Goedken, Kristine Fisch, Sarah Kohler, Kelsey Krcil and Sarah Jundt.

Goedken, who tallied 23 double-doubles in her two seasons with USF, closed out her career with 625 kills, 683 digs and 103 blocks. Kohler was a four-year starter that accumulated 761 kills and 259 total blocks. In all, the quintet accounted for 34.9 percent of last year’s kills, 21.6 percent of the digs and 51.4 percent of the Cougars’ blocks. “We used last season to help us get to where we are today and everyone is pretty excited about this year and trying again to make a bid for the NSIC tournament,” McCartney said. With the graduation of five student-athletes, USF is set to return eight of 17 players from the 2012 roster, including four starters and its libero. Among that group will be the Cougars’ senior class of Reed and defensive special Andrea Odbert. They started every match for Coach McCartney last season after playing their first two seasons at different schools (Reed, St. Leo’s; Odbert, Central CC). The tandem will resume their starting roles this year. “My expectation for these two will be as impact players but more as team leaders, we will need them to be in sync with one another both on and off the court,” McCartney said. “They each had great a spring, and I’m sure Alexa and Andrea will provide a lot of excitement for us this fall as well.” Also returning for the Cougars are juniors and two-year starters Emily Johnson and Samantha Lovell, a dynamic duo that have appeared in every match (72) since arriving in 2011. Johnson has 756 career kills and looks to become the first Cougar to join the 1,000-Kill Club since 2010 (Danielle Roers). The former Platte-Geddes star also has 577 digs and 130 blocks to her name. Last season, Samantha Lovell was asked to fill the shoes of USF all-time career blocks leader Alyssa Chambers and she answered the call, tossing up 95 rejections to account for 51 percent of the Cougars’ block output. Lovell also racked up 199 kills and led the team with a .296 hitting percentage—the 129th best clip in the nation. With another year under her belt, Lovell should figure to be one of the top returning middles in the NSIC. “Emily gives us great firepower on the left pin and Sam provides efficient attacking and a solid block in the middle,” said McCartney. “They both worked really hard over the spring and summer to improve on what they brought to the team last fall.” He added, “Emily and Sam are more fit and able to play at a higher level, and we’re expecting these two to help lead the way on and off the court this season.” Sophomores Kellee Griese, Natalie Minchow and Michelle Ritland bring additional experience to the squad. Griese played in all 30 matches and finished with 135 kills, 202 digs and a .123 hitting clip while Minchow made a handful of starts late in 2012 and registered a career-high 11 kills with two digs and three blocks in the Cougars’ regular season finale against No. 22 Minnesota State. “We used Natalie and Kellee last season as co-starters and they each saw some time in starting roles during our spring season,” McCartney said. “But we will need the pre-season camp to help settle the battles for those same roles this fall.”

Ritland, a 6’4 middle blocker who is also a pitcher for the Cougar softball team, appeared in 19 matches and finished with 25 kills and nine blocks. She claimed the second starting middle blocker position after a solid spring. “Michelle had a great spring season and will replace Sarah Kohler in the middle,” McCartney said. “She was a dominant force in the spring scrimmages on both the offensive and defensive sides of the net.” Redshirt freshman Megan Jacob looks to get her first taste of collegiate volleyball after being on the shelf for her rookie season recovering from an elbow injury. “Although Meg was finishing her rehab last spring, she worked hard to get onto the court and we were able to use her in a limited role,” said McCartney. “We were able to use her freshman season as a redshirt year and she still has a bright future ahead of her.” The Newcomers Joining the Cougars for the 2013 season will be incoming freshmen Jordan Calef (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/MB), Abby Folk (Rogers, Minn./DS/L) and Aubrey Milne (Murray, Utah/OH). The Cougars also added junior transfers Kate Hart (Chattaroy, Wash./Spokane CC/MB) and Becky Wessel (Stanton, Neb./Central CC/L/DS) for the 2013 season. The group of five marks the second full recruiting class for McCartney, who took the helm of the Cougar volleyball program in July of 2011. Wessel and Hart transferred in to USF at the semester break and participated in spring practice. Hart won the starting spot on the right pin while Wessel was the first defensive specialist off the bench. “They should both factor into this season as impact players on the court,” said McCartney. “The three freshmen coming in are all very skilled and possess the talent to compete for roles on our floor.” “If they are not impacting us during matches, they certainly will all be making us better in the gym every day,” he added. Looking Ahead: Season Preview The Cougars look forward to a 30-match slate featuring four teams that reached the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Three of the four NCAA qualifiers advanced to the second round of the tournament and powerhouse Concordia-St. Paul notched their sixth-straight national championship. “Our main goal when we put together a nonconference schedule is to prepare for the NSIC,” said McCartney. “Our focus is to continue to improve early in the season because that provides us the best avenue for making the NSIC Tournament.” USF begins the season on Sept. 6 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., with Nova Southeastern Shark Classic and closes the campaign at MSU-Moorhead on Nov. 16. USF opens the Shark Classic against the University of Findlay (Ohio), who went 14-17 in 2012 and qualified for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 10-8 league mark. Findlay returns the program’s firstever NCAA Division II All-American in senior middle blocker Danielle Taflinger. McCartney’s squad will follow the Oilers with battles against Pfeiffer (N.C./ Conference Carolinas/8-19 record in ‘12), Virginia State (CIAA/15-12 in ‘12) and Barton College (N.C./Conference Carolinas/9-18 in ‘12).

COUGAR VOLLEYBALL • 2013 PREVIEW

USF will return home Sept. 13-14 to co-host the NSIC Challenge with Augustana College. The Cougars welcome the Drury Panthers (Mo./GLVC/16-17 in ’12) for their home opener and will face the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (Ind./12-19) and Missouri Western (MIAA/16-16) before closing out the tourney slate versus the Bearcats of Northwestern Missouri State (MIAA/15-17). “We scheduled teams that would challenge us more than we had in the out-of-conference matches from last season in hopes to enter the conference season at a higher level than we did in 2012,” said McCartney. “This kind of schedule is necessary if we are going to reach the NSIC tournament.” USF opens the NSIC schedule on the road at Wayne State on Sept. 19. The Cougars will open the home portion of the league slate with the Mayor’s Cup Challenge rivalry match against Augustana College on Sept. 21. The match is set for a 4 p.m. start at the Stewart Center. The showdown with the Vikings is the first of a four-match home stand during which the Cougars also face Southwest Minnesota State, MSU-Moorhead and Northern State. Following the four-gamer at the Stewie, USF heads north for a long weekend in the Peace Garden State. The Cougars first step out of the league loop to play Jamestown College on Oct. 3. USF seeks revenge against the Jimmies (27-9, A.I.I.), who rallied from two sets down to hand the Cougars their only non-conference loss of 2012. USF closes out the weekend with matches at Minot State and the University of Mary. The Cougars return home a week later for a pair of matches against Upper Iowa and Winona State. USF then hits the road for their toughest stretch of the season with matches at defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota State-Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State. USF enjoys a brief two-game homestand against Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State (Oct. 25-26) before travelling to Madison for a midweek non-conference tilt with intrastate rival Dakota State. The Cougars will journey up I-35 N for matches against Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State (Nov. 1-2) and close out their home slate the next weekend against U-Mary and Minot State (Senior Day). USF concludes the regular season to a two-game road swing at Northern State (Nov. 15) and MSU-Moorhead (Nov. 16). McCartney knows the NSIC and the 30-match schedule will be a challenge, but he believes his team is ready for it. “I think the thing that excites me most is the level of program we have become over the past two seasons,” he said. “Each year has been a big step in the caliber of play we can offer and I think this season will be another step up the ladder.” He added, “I am excited about the newcomers joining our team for the pre-season camp, but equally excited about the returning athletes that worked so hard last spring and this summer to become a better team.” The 2013 NSIC regular season champion will be determined by the 20-game conference schedule. The top eight teams will play in the single elimination NSIC Volleyball Tournament on November 20, 23-24. Quarterfinals will be hosted on campus by the top four seeds, while the semifinals and championship game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed following the first round of play.

NSIC HISTORY From its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 16-team union of upper Midwest colleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II. The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Minnesota State University Moorhead, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today. Southwest Minnesota State University was added in 1969, followed by Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (NE) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota Crookston in 1999, the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006, Augustana College in 2008 and Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls in 2012. Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth later left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. University of Minnesota, Morris and Michigan Tech University were once part of the NSIC family as well. In 1992 the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the Northern Sun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979. Before NSIC affiliates became certified for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent roles in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualified student-athletes to national tournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships. The NSIC celebrates its 82nd season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning 12 national titles since 2006. Winona State men claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories. Concordia University launched an ongoing streak of six consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008 the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of 74 straight matches. In 2010 the Golden Bear extended that NCAA record win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record before ripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title. In 2011, after overcoming midseason injuries, the Golden Bears hit their stride. The Golden Bears knocked off No. 1 and undefeated Cal State San Bernardino to become the first team in the history of NCAA Division II women’s volleyball, to captured a fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Championship. Then in 2012, the Golden Bears again made a late season and championship match surge as they defeated Tampa 3-2 after trailing 0-2 to win their sixth straight NCAA DII Volleyball National Championship. In a most surprising run, Minnesota Duluth completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and number three Northwest Missouri State. Two years later, in 2010, the Bulldogs repeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the first NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with undefeated records. Minnesota State added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game. Augustana College got into the mix of national championships in 2011 when their women’s cross country team turned in a true team performance in Spokane, Wash. All five Viking runners earned All-American status as Augustana won the first cross country national championship in NSIC history. The NSIC has also had seven athletes awarded with the NCAA Elite 89 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. Earning the award were Ben Keller (Minnesota State, Baseball 2012 & 2013), Billy Brockmueller (Sioux Falls, Cross Country 2013), Cody Lensing (Augustana, Wrestling 2012), Kendra Huettl (Minnesota State, Softball, 2011), Matt Braithwaite (Augustana, Cross Country, 2010) and Lauren Brown (Winona State, Outdoor Track & Field, 2010). Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attending these colleges and universities. The NSIC is committed to providing rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, indeed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future. They qualified for the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2007 and return all but one starter from a year ago. The team will be led by senior Danielle Taflinger, who became the Oilers first volleyball player to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division II level. Taflinger, a first team all-conference and all-region performer, was named honorable mention AllAmerican by the AVCA after leading the team with 310 kills and a .352 hitting percentage. She also had 108 total blocks and 31 digs during her third season with the Oilers. Heading into her final year, Taflinger is the career record holder for hitting percentage (.348) and ranks 11th all-time in blocks (283). The Oilers will also welcome back senior Mackenzie Vorst, who missed time last year with an injury, but was still named honorable mention all-conference. Vorst tallied 210 kills, 135 digs and 37 total blocks in 21 matches before the injury cut her season short. Junior Samantha Granger and sophomore Lindsy Reindel also return after having successful seasons with 193 and 139 kills, respectively. Junior Amanda Calhoun is also back to serve as the Oilers setter as she totaled 1,059 assists and 259 digs as a sophomore. Defensively, the Oilers return a number of able bodies in sophomore Becca Shoemaker, senior Jacqui Endre and senior Brittany Hall. Shoemaker led the team with 309 digs while Endre and Hall recorded 274 and 260 digs, respectively. Sophomore Julie Lyons, who racked up 38 kills in 36 sets, will also return to the team along with a host of newcomers who are expected to earn valuable playing time for the Oilers in 2013.

Pfeiffer University women’s volleyball posted an overall record of 8-19 in 2012, which included a 5-11 mark in the highly competitive Conference Carolinas. The Falcons return nine letterwinners and five starters, including sophomore middle blocker Kelly Lancellot. The Falcons’ lone all-conference pick last year (third team), Lancellot put down 196 kills and led the team with a 2.11 kills per set average. The former Gulf Coast HS star also posted 72 blocks and served up 35 aces. The 2013 season will be the first for new coach Paul Lawson, who was at the helm of the Alverno (Wisc.) volleyball program for the past three seasons. Prior to Alverno, Lawson coached at the College of Saint Mary from 2003-10. Lawson and his Lady Falcons will look to climb up the Conference Carolinas standings after a 10th place finish a year ago. “We will train hard to enhance the efficiency level in the preseason,” said Lawson, who has 20 years’ experience as a collegiate coach. “We want to bring this team together as one and then transfer our practice play to match play. We will work to be competitive within the conference and move up from there.” On top of the usual tough Conference Carolinas schedule, Pfeiffer will also compete in some non-conference tournaments. The season opens on Sept. 6 as the Lady Falcons travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to compete in the Nova Southeastern Tournament. Virginia State enjoyed a historic turnaround in 2012 as then-second year head volleyball coach Ivana Rich guided the Trojans to 15 wins, VSU’s most wins since the 2004 season. The Trojans posted an impressive 13-3 mark in the CIAA and saw five VSU student-athletes named to the 2012 All-CIAA Volleyball Team— the most in school history. The Trojans return most of their firepower (71% of kills, 55% of blocks) including junior outside hitter and 2012 CIAA first team honoree Whitley Bradley. Bradley accounted for 24% of the Trojans’ total kills with a team-best 243 stabs, which ranked her eleventh in the CIAA. Bradley also finished tenth in the conference with 574 total attacks and led the squad with 40 service aces. Also back in the lineup for VSU in 2013 are a pair of All-CIAA second team selections; rising junior Jenessa Shinauld and senior-to-be Aubree Parker. Shinauld ranked second in the CIAA with an average of 4.31 digs per set and was sixth overall in the conference with 263 total digs. Parker put up an average of 2.92 kills per set, good enough for fourth-most in the league, and finished with 178 kills on the season. The tandem will once again have the table set by senior Jasmine Henderson, who dished 626 assists last year (8.35 per set). The Lady Bulldogs will look to move up the ranks in Conference Carolinas and the Southeast Region. Barton was projected to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the 2012 preseason coaches’ poll but finished the season at 9-17 overall and 6-10 in the league loop. Barton had missed the conference tournament the previous season but the upstart ‘Dawgs turned heads in the final weeks of the 2012 campaign, winning four of their final six matches to snag the final seed in the eight-team Conference Carolinas postseason tournament. First-year head coach Jeff Lennox was named an AVCA Thirty Under 30 award winner, a prestigious distinction given to upand-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport of volleyball. It marked the second time Lennox received the award in his brief coaching career. In terms of the lineup, Coach Lennox will have to fill the shoes of three-time All Carolinas-Conference performer Kati Wood. A member of Barton’s 1,000-Kill Club, Wood led the Lady Bulldogs and ranked eighth in the league with 3.05 kills per set. The 6-foot, right-side attacker also averaged 2.48 digs per set and 0.36 blocks per set. She logged 13 double-doubles in 27 matches over her final season. But despite the graduation of Wood, the 2013 Bulldogs return plenty of experience with 10 upperclassmen on the roster. Those returners include four players that played in at least 90 percent of the Bulldogs’ matches; sophomore setter Amanda Grandy (783 assists in 2012), senior Meredith Watkins (143 kills), senior Chelsea Fleury (233 digs) and sophomore Melissa Cochran (274 kills). Barton begins its season at the seventh annual Shark Classic hosted by Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on the weekend of Sept. 6-7. Season Preview Drury’s volleyball Panthers have been tabbed for a fifth-place finish in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division in the preseason poll of league coaches. The squad picked up 59 total points. Coach Ashleigh Fitzgerald’s Panthers return the majority of their key personnel from a squad that finished 16-17 overall last season and 8-10 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Drury lost seniors Alex Smith, Kylie Inman and Lauren Dorris to graduation and it’s Smith that will be the hardest to replace. A Second Team All-Daktronics Midwest Region and First Team All-GLVC selection, she led the Panthers and was second in the GLVC with 494 kills in 2012. Returning for the Panthers is junior Sara Borneman, who stood second on the team with 431 kills and also chipped in 73 digs and 32 blocks with five blocking assists. Also back for her final collegiate campaign is senior middle hitter Amanda Watson, the team leader in blocks the past two seasons. She has racked up 135 total stuffs in her career. Fifth-year head coach and former Ole Miss standout Ashleigh Fitzgerald signed six players in her 2013 recruiting class. The South Dakota School of Mines struggled to a 12-19 overall record last year in their first season as an NCAA D-II independent program. Playing without a conference, the Lady Hardrockers spent most of the season on the road and played just five home matches. The highlight of the season was the play of junior middle hitter Justine Blade, who was named the Co-Independent Collegiate Athletic Association’s (ICAA) Player of the Year and earned ICAA first team honors. Blade averaged 3.53 kills and 0.95 blocks per set over 122 sets while hitting .346. She finished the season with 431 kills and 116 blocks and enters her senior season with 948 career kills. USF volleyball fans might remember Blade, as she posted three kills and six blocks in the SDSMT’s 3-1 win against USF back in 2011. SDSMT also returns a pair of ICAA volleyball second team honorees in senior outside hitter Janelle Strampe (355 kills, 58 blocks) and junior setter Carsyn Garcia (151 kills, 1,045 assists) along with sophomore Jena Kreuzer (210 kills). The Lady Hardrockers lost just their libero to graduation; libero and ICAA second team selection Rachel Pekarek (453 digs). Fifth-year head coach Tiffany McCampbell signed a quartet of true freshmen for the 2013 campaign: Kirsten Johnson, Hannah Redman, Karli Sanders and Mikkella Reese. In terms of schedule, the bulk of the Hardrockers’ opposition comes out of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Association (MIAA) playing six matches; four contests against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) members and Northern Sun Conference (NSIC) teams; two bouts against teams in the Sunshine State Conference; and one-match competition from the East Coast Conference, Heartland Conference and the Frontier Conference. Season Preview Missouri Western State University was picked 10th in the MIAA preseason coaches poll. The Griffons, who finished the 2012 season with a 16-16 record, will open the season on Sept. 6 at the Pittsburg State University Invitational. The 2013 campaign is the first for interim head coach Marian Carbin, who starred at MWSU from 2002-05. The Griffons return eight players who started at least 10 matches in 2012 and 11 players who played in 20 or more sets. The Griffons return honorable mention All-MIAA selections Stephanie Hattey (S/OH, 5-9, Sr., Kearney, Mo.) and Jessie Thorup (RS, 5-11, So., Olathe, Kan.). Stephanie Hattey had a solid 2012 for the Griffons. A setter by trade, Hattey was forced to man the left pin for most of the season. She recorded eight matches with double digit kills, including a career best 15 stabs at Pittsburg State (11/9). She also had double digit sets in 28 of her 32 matches with a season-high 39 versus Central Oklahoma (10/13). Hattey was also solid on defense, posting double digit digs in 22 matches with a season high 24 in the Griffons’ season finale. Hattey guided the Griffons to their most victories in a season since 2006 when they matched the 16-win mark. Hattey was second on the team with 243 kills, led the team with 656 set assists and was second with 369 digs. Jessie Thorup had an outstanding rookie year, lead the Griffons with 274 kills and a 2.38 kills per set average. She also swung at a .230 clip, making just 109 errors on 718 attack attempts. The Griffons went 16-16 overall in 2012, their best record since 2006. The 16 victories were the most under former head coach Cory Frederick as he had 11, 12, 14 and 16 wins the past four seasons. Frederick resigned as the MWSU volleyball coach this spring and former assistant Marian Carbin will begin her first year as the Griffon head coach. Carbin was on the bench as Frederick’s assistant for the past four seasons.

With a roster of eight veterans, including five starters, head coach Amy Phelps and her squad are confident the Bearcats will top last year’s record of 15-17 overall and 9-9 in the MIAA. Northwest has the experience, the talent and determination that could propel the Bearcats to the historic success it achieved in 2010 when they made their first-ever appearance in NCAA Division II South Central Regional. The 2011 season was about rebuilding on the foundation the 2010 team constructed. Outside hitter Mackie Keller, along with incoming freshmen Abby Graves, Brooke Bartosh and Bailey Vance, learned the rigors of the MIAA. They all returned last season and the Bearcats showed that fight late in the season when it won several key matches to earn a spot in the MIAA Tournament. Northwest will hit the volleyball court this season with several key players back that have established roles. Senior captains Keller (188 kills, 1.58 kills per set, 66 blocks in ‘12) and Bridget Hanafin (252 assists, 6.63 assists per set in ‘12) will lead the charge. Also returning for the Bearcats is senior libero and 2012 MIAA first team honoree Lori Beckman, who sett the single season record at Northwest for digs (716) and stands fourth on Northwest’s all-time list for digs (1,488). Sophomore right-side hitter Brooke Bartosh represented Northwest on the Third Team lineup. She led the Bearcats with 361 kills to rank eighth in the MIAA. Northwest has their sights set on being more than .500 team in conference play or merely competitive with MIAA powers Central Missouri and Washburn. They want to win those matches. Season Preview The Wayne State College volleyball team is ranked 20th in the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division II Top 25 Coaches Preseason Poll. The Wildcats received a total of 287 points in voting conducted by various Division II head coaches from across the country. In addition, the Wildcats were picked to finish fourth in the 2013 Northern Sun Conference Preseason Volleyball Coaches’ Poll. The Wildcats received a total of 183 points in voting conducted by league head coaches while senior outside hitter Cori Hobbs was selected as Wayne State’s Player to Watch in the NSIC this season. Hobbs led WSC in kills last season averaging 3.21 per match to earn All-NSIC Second Team and AVCA All-Central Region honors. Hobbs had 16 double doubles on the year, averaging 3.17 digs to go along with 3.21 kills per set. She recorded a career high 20 kills at Upper Iowa while starting all 32 matches for the Wildcats last season and is on pace to become the latest member of the 1,000 kill club at WSC (815 kills entering senior season). Season Preview Augustana’s quest for a third consecutive winning volleyball season revolves around All-America middle blocker Holly Hafemeyer. A 6-foot-3 senior from Faribault, Minn., Hafemeyer started all 30 matches and played in all 103 sets a year ago. So did Taylor Hrdlichka, a 6-1 senior middle blocker/right side hitter from Lakeville, Minn. Outside hitter Courtney Ysker, a 5-9 junior from Windom, Minn., started 25 matches and played in 100 sets Lindsey Petersen, a 5-10 junior from Elkhart, Iowa, played in the Vikings’ first three matches a year ago, including two starts. She was granted a medical redshirt after suffering a season-ending knee injury. Defensive specialist Kayla Wallerich, 5-8 senior from Marshall, Minn., played in all 30 matches and 103 sets in 2012. Wallerich found herself filling voided positions from Viking injuries and finished the season first on the team in service aces (31) and second in digs (342) while placing in the top five of five different categories for the Vikings. Defensive specialists Julia Witt, 5-7 junior from Hutchinson, Minn., and 5-6 senior Christine Bielski from Chaska, Minn., played in 29 and 28 matches, respectively. Witt and Bielski combined for 267 digs in 2012, both finishing in the top six on the Augustana squad. Augustana also has experienced setters in 5-8 sophomore Marissa Johnson from Omaha, Neb., (28 matches, 21 starts), and 5-7 senior Katie Niesen from Fort Dodge, Iowa (15 matches, 5 starts). Johnson used her productive freshman year to make her mark on the Augustana record book - she is currently 10th in the career assist list after setting up 896 kills in 2012. The Vikings won 17 of 30 matches in 2012 and went 11-9 in the NSIC. Augustana faced a ranked opponent 11 times, including three teams that held the top-ranked spot in the America Volleyball Coaches’ Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.

Season Preview The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team opens the 2013 season ranked No. 6 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll. The ranking marks the seventh consecutive season the Mustangs have been ranked in the Top 25 of the AVCA Division II Preseason Poll and third consecutive season they have began the season ranked No. 6. The Mustangs were tabbed third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason poll. Head coach Terry Culhane, who enters his tenth season at the helm of the Mustang squad, welcomed back nine returning letterwinners along with six incoming freshman. The Mustangs will look to fill the void of three major offensive catalysts that led the 2012 team to the second round of the NCAA tournament and a share of the NSIC regular season title. The Mustangs’ top returner is sophomore setter and 2012 AVCA National Freshman of the Year Emilee Gutzmer. She was also honored as an AVCA All-America second team selection, the AVCA Central-Region freshman of the year and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference freshman of the year. In her first collegiate season, Gutzmer finished the regular season ranked second in the NSIC and NCAA with 1,288 assists and 12.75 assists per set. Gutzmer has also added 249 digs, which ranked second on the team this season. With just one season under her belt, Gutzmer already ranks ninth all-time in SMSU history with 1,381 assists. SMSU’s other top returners are sophomore right side hitter and NSIC first team selection Abbey Thissen (328 kills, .294 hitting percentage), senior libero Rachel Westby (440 digs) and sophomore outside hitter McKell Anderson (292 kills). SMSU finished the 2012 season 30-3 overall, including its first regular season NSIC title since 2001. SMSU also captured the 2012 NSIC/US Bank tournament championship. SMSU received its ninth consecutive NCAA appearance with the win and its 10th in school history. Nebraska-Kearney ended SMSU’s season in four sets in the second round of the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years.

Season Preview The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons were picked ninth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate preseason coaches poll and are entering their 19th season under the direction of Tammy Blake, who is the longest-tenured head coach in the league. MSUM finished the 2012 season 17-12, including a five-match winning streak to conclude the season. Last year, MSU-Moorhead swept the Cougars at home; the stingy Dragons held USF to just a .039 attack percentage in the match and outblocked the visitors 8-to-1. While the Dragon squad has graduated four seniors, including All-American libero Katy Ness, it does return three starters and nine letterwinners from that squad. The Dragons do not have a single senior and have welcomed five true freshmen on the roster. The top returners for MSU-Moorhead are a pair of juniors, outside hitter Annie Palmquist (team-best 314 kills in 2012 and 32 blocks) and middle blocker/right side Maggie Gruber (254 kills and 80 blocks). Season Preview 2013 looks to be a promising campaign for the Wolves as eight players that saw significant playing time off of last year’s 19-win squad return this season. All-NSIC selections Drew Smith and Kelsey Chambers lead NSU into the season. Smith’s 1,163 assists a season ago were the most at Northern since 2006. Chambers was third on the team in hitting percentage (.236) and total blocks (53) a season ago and her 341 points scored were second-best. Six talented incoming freshmen join the squad this season in outside hitter Tori Biach (Bradenton, Fla.), defensive specialist Mikaela Casey (Oxbow, N.D.), outside hitter Ashtin McClemans and middle hitter Rachel Rogers (Warner, S.D.). Local products Lauren McCafferty and Amanda Tobin from Aberdeen Central High School join the Wolves at outside hitter as well. The main challenge for Northern entering the season will be replacing production on the defensive side of the net. The Wolves lost 66 percent (122) of its production from a season ago on total blocks and also lost 743 digs (46 percent) from the 2012 squad. NSU will begin the season playing in two separate tournaments, the LaQuinta Kickoff Classic in Springfield, Mo., and the Maverick Invitational hosted by Minnesota State. The Wolves will play seven games all told in the two tournaments, with five of them being neutral-site games. Northern will face host Drury to end their four games at the Kickoff Classic and will play Minnesota State to end the Maverick Invite. The match with the Mavericks will be considered a non-conference match. Other non-conference opponents include Union (Tenn.) on Sept. 6 in the season-opener, Lindenwood (Mo.) on Sept. 6, Arkansas Tech Sept. 7, Black Hills State Sept. 13 and Illinois Springfield Sept. 13. Northern opens the conference portion of the schedule on the road as it travels to North Dakota for a match with Mary on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.

Season Preview Jamestown (N.D.) was picked as the preseason favorite in the 2013 North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Preseason Volleyball Poll. The preseason poll was voted among the league coaches. The NSAA is the newest conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), established last April. Jamestown, which finished 27-9 overall record in 2012, tallied five first-place votes and 25 points to earn first place in the preseason poll. The Jimmies qualified for the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round last year after finishing runner-up in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Postseason Tournament. Mayville State (N.D.) was picked second with 18 points, followed by Valley City State (N.D.) with 14 points, Dakota State (S.D.) 13 points and Presentation (S.D.) 5 points. The 2013 NSAA volleyball season will consist of eight conference matches with five teams competing for the conference crown. The NSAA Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament play kicks off on Nov. 2. The NSAA volleyball championship match is scheduled for Nov. 9 at the highest seed remaining. Sarah Becker, a senior middle blocker from Jamestown, was selected as the NSAA Volleyball Preseason Player of the Year voted by the conference coaches. Season Preview The Minot State University volleyball team was picked to finish No. 15 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this season by the league’s coaches. The Beavers earned 31 points in the poll, six points ahead of conference rival University of Mary (25) and four points behind Bemidji State (35). MISU went 6-24 overall in 2012, the team’s first season as a member of the NSIC. Sophomore Mallory Sall (OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) was selected as a “Player to Watch” by the NSIC. Last year, Sall played in every match while totaling an impressive 399 kills as a freshman. She was also solid with her defense, collecting 250 digs on the year (2nd most on the team). Her best performance on the year came against conference rival University of Mary where she notched 30 kills and 14 digs in MISU’s first ever win in the Northern Sun. Also returning for the Beavers is junior Emily Byrne (S, Reno, Nev.) who dished out 896 assists last season. Along with Sall, Byrne and strong group of sophomores who saw extensive playing time in 2012, the Beavers bring back three players who missed time the team last year but made a huge impact in 2011. Jen Dixon (Jr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba), Sara Friesen (Sr., MH, Brandon, Manitoba) and Kelsey Wingo (Sr., MH, Twain Harte, Calif.) are all returning to the Beavers this season as they add depth and experience to the roster. In 2011, the trio combined for 979 kills and 495 digs as they led the Beavers to an 18-16 overall record. Minot State will open their season at the Carroll College Invitational on Sept. 6 & 7. The Beavers open their 2013 home schedule when they host MSU-Moorhead on Sept. 19 in the NSIC opener.

Despite vast improvement last season and returning six starters, the Marauders enter 2013 picked to finish last (16th) in the NSIC. U-Mary went 3-24 last season (3-17 NSIC) and ended the year with 11 straight losses. They finished ahead of both Minot State and Bemidji State for 13th place in the NSIC in 2012. USF defeated the Marauders 3-1 on Oct. 20; a match that saw the Cougars hit .184 and out-block U-Mary 8-to-6. The Marauders lost three players to graduation: Valerie Lesu, Brianna Smith and Hailee Walsh. U-Mary junior outside hitter Morgan Dake was tabbed as the Marauders’ player to watch in the NSIC preseason coaches’ poll. Dake started 19 of 23 games for U-Mary last season and led the team with a .204 hitting percentage. Dake finished fourth on the team with 117 kills and was third with 46 blocks. Six of those 46 blocks came in a career night against Winona State on Sept. 21. The junior from Bakersfield, Calif. last year was named to the NSIC All-Academic Team and was elected as U-Mary’s Female Strength Athlete of the Year. Fourth-year head coach Steve Novacek will also have the services of senior outside hitter Allison Opp at his disposal for one more campaign. Opp led the Marauders with 198 kills in 2012 and enters her senior season with 515 career stabs. Looking to improve on last season, U-Mary will get their first action of the season as they head to the Great Falls/Carroll College Classic Sept. 6-7. The Marauders will open conference play at home against Northern State Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.

Season Preview Upper Iowa University was picked to finish tenth in the 16-team NSIC. Entering his third year with the Peacocks, head coach Aaron Nelson owns a combined record of 31-28. Last year, Nelson led the team to their first winning season in program history and tied the school-record for wins in a single season with 16. Melanie Behnke was named as a NSIC Player to Watch heading into her senior season. Behnke earned All-NSIC Second Team honors last season after leading the Peacock offense with 397 kills in 111 sets. Her 3.58 kills/set were 6th best in the NSIC and ranked as the 58th highest mark in the country. The Wisconsin native reached double figures in kills in all but five of UIU’s 29 matches and reached 20-plus kills three times including a season-high 24 at Winona State. Behnke added 150 digs, 43 blocks and 4 service aces. Junior right side hitter Hailey Brown filled in multiple times at setter last year due to injuries and earned valuable playing experience in the NSIC. She started on the right side for the Peacocks and finished fourth on the team with 206 kills. She also registered 330 assists, 314 digs and a total of 70 blocks. Also back for UIU is sophomore Amanda Weiss, who racked up a team-high 451 digs in the back row. She also added 30 service aces, and 40 assists. Furthermore, 300 of her digs and 18 of her service aces came against Northern Sun opponents. Sydney Cyzon and Taylor Williams both saw the court last year as true freshmen. Cyzon finished with 87 digs, 9 service aces and 4 assists. The Peacocks will open their 2013 season in Decorah, Iowa in an exhibition game against the Norse of Luther College on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. The regular season will begin in Winona, Minn. on Sept. 6-7 in a tournament that will see Upper Iowa take the court against Michigan Tech, St. Joseph’s, MSU Moorhead and Northwest Missouri State. After another four-match tournament at Wisconsin-Parkside, UIU will host the Warriors of Waldorf in their home opener on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Dorman Gym.

Season Preview

Fresh off its first 20-win season since 1993, the Winona State volleyball team has been selected to finish sixth by the league’s coaches in the NSIC Preseason Volleyball Poll. The Warriors received 142 points in the poll, tied with Minnesota State. The NSIC chose Warrior senior Bekah Saugen as the team’s player to watch. An all-conference performer the past two seasons, Saugen led the team in kills (309) and digs (319) in 2012. She had double-digit kills in 17 matches, including a streak of nine straight. She enters the season 15th on WSU’s all-time kills list. Senior outside hitter Katie Froehle returns for the Warriors. The NSIC All-Academic selection led Winona State with 312 kills in 2012 and played in a team-high 112 games as a junior. She was one of two players on team with at least 300 kills and 300 digs and recorded 14 double-doubles. WSU finished last season with a 20-11 record. The team set a program record with 15 straight victories, a mark that had stood since the 1987 squad’s 12 straight wins. WSU continued its trend of knocking off ranked opponents, posting wins over No. 18 Wayne State and No. 20 Minnesota State. Individually, Kate Horihan and Bekah Saugen earned all-conference honors for their play. The Warriors added four true freshmen to the roster and will open the season at home when they host the Winona State invitational Sept. 6-7. WSU will face St. Joseph’s, Northwest Missouri State, Michigan Tech and MSU-Moorhead over the course of the weekend.

Season Preview Concordia University-St. Paul will open up the season as the number one team in the country in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Golden Bears received 43 of the possible 48 first place votes coming off their sixth straight national championship run. The Golden Bears were also picked to finish first by the NSIC coaches for the 10th consecutive season in the NSIC Preseason Volleyball Poll. Concordia received all 15 first place votes (coaches can’t vote for their own team). While Concordia is the preseason favorite for the 10th-straight year, the program has also captured the conference crown for the previous 10 seasons. Kayla Koenecke was named as the Golden Bears player to watch by the league. Koenecke returns for her senior season after being named an All-American for the third straight season while helping the Golden Bears to national titles in the process to keep the program’s streak alive at six in a row. She finished last season with a career high 441 kills while hitting .396, just shy of the .400 mark she put up her sophomore campaign. Her .396 hitting percentage ranked eighth in the nation, and her 441 kills ranked 83rd (sixth in the NSIC). She also showed her versatility finishing with career highs in digs (362), assists (120) and total blocks (77). Koenecke enters her senior year moving up the ranks historically at Concordia. Her career .385 hitting percentage ranks second all-time, just behind former teammate Cassie Haag’s .386 mark. She also ranks eighth in kills per set (3.30), eighth in assists (296), ninth in kills (1202), 10th in points (1413.5), 12th in digs (977), 13th in blocks (203) and 13th in service aces (96). Concordia begins their season on September 6th at the Gangelhoff Center at 1 p.m. against No. 11 Colorado School of Mines. That match begins a difficult early season schedule which features seven straight matches against teams that are nationally ranked or are receiving votes. They play twice on Saturday, September 7 at 11 a.m. against Wayne State and 7:30 p.m. against Indianapolis before a 1 p.m. Sunday match against Wingate. Conference play begins with a home match against Upper Iowa on September 19 at 7 p.m.

Season Preview

The Minnesota State volleyball team was picked to finish in sixth place in the Preseason NSIC Volleyball Coaches’ Poll. MSU, which finished its 2012 season with an 18-11 overall record, including a 12-8 mark in league play, earned 142 points along with Winona State, en route to the sixth spot in the poll. The Mavericks also received votes in the first AVCA Coaches’ Poll of the season. MSU graduated four starters in 2012 but the expectations surrounding MSU’s program have not been lowered and longtime head coach Dennis Amundson anticipates that his team will continue to compete at a very high level. Sophomore setter Ellie Van De Steeg was named to the 2013 NSIC Volleyball Player to Watch list. She saw action in 29 matches and finished with a team-high 1234 assists (11.32 assists per set), recorded 47 kills and scooped 178 digs. De Steeg also served a team-high 24 aces (.920 serving percentage) and contributed seven solo blocks along with 51 assisted blocks en route to 2012 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors. The Mavericks’ other returning starter is senior defensive specialist Briel Hendricksen, who finished second on the team with 19 service aces (.899 serving percentage) and recorded 242 digs with an average of 2.57 a game. Hendricksen was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week once during season. In all, MSU welcomes 18 volleyball student-athletes to camp this season, including seven true freshmen. The Mavericks open their 2013 schedule on the road as they take part in the Western Oregon Invitational Sept. 6-7. The twoday tournament will pit MSU against four different teams, with Minnesota State opening the tournament Sept. 6 against Western Washington.

Season Preview The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team was picked to finish 11th by the league coaches in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason poll released by the conference office Thursday morning. The Golden Eagles received 90 points in the poll, just five behind Upper Iowa University, the team picked to finish 10th in the standings. UMC finished 11th in the league last season after being picked to finish 11th in the 2012 NSIC Preseason poll. Chelsea Wiesner (Sr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) was picked as UMC’s Player to Watch. Wiesner will come into 2013 as one of the top returning liberos in the NSIC. Wiesner averaged 4.86 digs per contest last season en route to 442 overall digs. Wiesner is on pace to become the all-time leader in digs in Golden Eagle history, which she should accomplish early in the season. Wiesner needs just 91 digs to surpass Jaclyn Slepicka as the all-time digs leader. She is currently third in school history and needs just 43 digs to move past Joan Ebnet in second place. Wiesner will lead a group of six seniors for the Golden Eagles as they head into the 2013 campaign. In addition to digs, Wiesner was among the team leaders in service aces with 30 last season. The Golden Eagles return six-of-seven starters from a season ago led by Wiesner and 2012 All-NSIC Second Team pick Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.). Also returning are seniors setter Paige Mitchell (West Palm Beach, Fla.), middle hitter Katie Miedtke (Maple Grove, Minn.) and outside hitter Alexandra Skeeter (Milwaukee, Wis.). Junior middle hitter Morgan VanGerpen (Overland Park, Kan.) also returns as a starter. Senior setter Lindsey Rees (Bronson, Mich.) also returns after seeing a lot of playing time last season. Season Preview According to fourth-year head coach Wayne Chadwick, the number of wins accumulated by the 2012 Bemidji State University volleyball team was, in a word, disappointing. A roster featuring just one upper classman was tested early and often in the rough and tumble Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). But the benefit of running a youthful roster on the court day in and day out is that the players gain valuable experience. This year’s BSU volleyball squad, which was picked 14th in the recent NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, lost just one senior from its 4-23 season, but her shoes will be tough ones to fill in 2013. Bethany Thompson was named the team’s offensive player of the year and was a Second-Team All-NSIC selection after a 354-kill season. The Owatonna, Minn. native was second in the NSIC with 4.02 kills per set and was third in the conference with 4.39 points per set. Those numbers put her at 18th and 27th in the nation, respectively. Thompson was the team’s go-to hitter, racking up 656 more attacks than any other BSU player and averaging more than half an attack per set more than any other NSIC player. Despite having the full attention of other teams’ defenses, Thompson still managed to reach 1,000 career kills in her final match. In 2013, the Beavers will go from having one senior to having no seniors. This year’s edition of the team, however, will return a wealth of experience with 10 veteran players, led by 2013 NSIC Player to Watch Rachel Craig (Jr., MH). Craig played in all 27 matches for the Beavers last season and totaled 158 kills to place her second on the team. She registered a .183 attack percentage to sit fourth on the team, while leading the team in blocks for the second straight year with 56. Another key returner is Courtney Fox (So., DS), who registered 201 digs as a rookie. The 14-player roster has five players in both its junior and sophomore classes and a four-player freshman class. Six players saw action in more than 75 of the team’s 88 total games in 2012. Bemidji State will open the season with a road trip to St. Louis to play four matches in the Maryville University Tournament, Sept. 6-7.

Season Preview Dakota State is entering the new era this fall. DSU is one of the five charter members in the newly-formed National Intercollegiate Association of Athletics’ conference—the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.), Presentation (S.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.) are the other charter members. Dickinson State (N.D.) will join the NSAA, starting in 2014-15 academic year. Jamestown (N.D.) was picked as the preseason favorite to win the inaugural NSAA Volleyball Coaches’ Poll. Mayville State was picked to finish second with 18 points, followed by Valley City State third (14 points), Dakota State fourth (13 points) and Presentation fifth (5 points). DSU’s Kelci Viesselman and Stacey Schuller were named to NSAA Preseason Volleyball Team. DSU was a former member of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference for the past two years. The Trojans finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 12-20. Kristen DiPaola surpassed the 1,000-kill club and accumulated the second most kills in a single season with 591. She ranked second in the nation in kills per set (5.1 kills). She held numerous records in the Trojan Volleyball record book including most kills in a single match on several occasions. DiPaola was named to the A.I.I. All-Conference team. Dakota State have 22 players on this year’s volleyball roster. The Trojans return seven players from last year’s team and will have 15 new faces this season, including two junior transfers— Kelci Viesselman and Kat Gonzalez. There are 12 freshmen on the team—Brittany Anderson, Chelsey Davis, Heather Dearing, Voni Finck, Haley Hillestad, Kylie Martin, Jessica McKenney, Mackenzie Schultz, Annika Stephens, Taylor Stratton, Kaylee Vander Wal and Tessa Weeldreyer. DSU will have a junior varsity team this season and are scheduled to play 12 matches. Season Preview The University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball enters 2013 as the fourth best team in NCAA Division II, according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs received two first-place votes and moved up from a fifth place ranking in the final poll of last season. The NSIC has three of the top six teams in the poll and four of the top 25, with No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State and No. 20 Wayne State also on the list. Minnesota State Mankato and Winona State also received votes. In addition, UMD received one first-place vote and finished second in the polling behind preseason favorite and fellow defending co-champion Concordia University-St. Paul. Coach Jim Boos’ Bulldogs boast the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year in senior outside hitter Kate Lange and 11 straight NCAA tournament appearances as they enter a season as a top team in conference play as well as across the nation. Lange enters the 2013 season as the reigning NSIC Player of the Year and a three-time All-NSIC selection. She earned AVCA First Team All-American status in each of the last two seasons in addition to being named to the Daktronics All-American second (2011) and third (2012) teams. The two-time AVCA All-Central Region first member is seventh all-time in kills for the Bulldogs with 1,423 and is on pace to become UMD’s all-time leader. Lange also ranks sixth at UMD with 74 career solo blocks. In 2012, she started each of the Bulldogs’ 34 matches while leading the team in points (647.0), kills (569), and solo blocks (32). Her 569 kills also led the NSIC and were over 200 more than the next highest total for any one player. Aside from league opponents, the Bulldogs will take on three other preseason top-25 teams including No. 18 Wheeling Jesuit and No. 19 West Florida on Sept. 6 at the West Florida Opening Weekend Tournament. UMD’s schedule doesn’t get any easier in week two as it faces No. 9 Indianapolis at the Wis.-Parkside Tournament on Sept. 13.

Season Preview St. Cloud State head coach Michelle Blaeser begins her fourth season with the Huskies and returns nine players. Last season the squad finished with a 10-18 overall record. The Huskies ended the season on a high note, rolling off four straight conference wins and are looking to pick up right where they left off. SCSU were picked 13th in the NSIC preseason poll, right behind 12th place USF. The Cougars knocked off SCSU in straight sets last season for their first-ever NSIC victory. Blaeser brings back a lot of experience to the 2013 roster. Senior middle hitter Ellie Dietzen (Black Creek, Wis.) led the Huskies in both kills (238) and blocks (96) last season. Dietzen along with sophomore middle hitter Kellan Flynn (Tomahawk, Wis.) and sophomore defensive specialist Brianne Stamer (Hutchinson) started and played every set of the 2012 season, participating in 103 total. Junior setter Erin Ohlemann (Golden Valley) had a team-high 713 assists in 2012, averaging 7.67 per set. Allison Butler (Burnsville) played in all 28 matches as a double-threat, both setting and hitting from the right side. Stamer recorded 476 digs during her freshman stint and now holds the first year single season record that was previously set at 426. Outside hitters Dani Domeier (Norwood Young America) and Rachel Burke (Madison, Wis.) also made significant impacts last fall. Domeier posted five double-doubles while Burke led the Huskies in kills/ set as she averaged 2.38 and recorded double-digit kill totals in ten matches. The Huskies bring in four newcomers for the 2013 season. Marissa Kline (Luxemburg, Wis.), Macy Weller (Brooten), Mary Kate Dougherty (Waukesha, Wis.) and Shannon Klink (Harford, Wis.) now complete the 2013 St. Cloud State volleyball roster. She Digs It: USF’s Heeney Reaches Milestone October 2010 By: Stephanie Pendrys USF Sports Information

ibero. The word looks more like the name of a European luxury sedan than a position in volleyball. For USF Cougar Rachel Heeney, explaining — or even pronouncing — her position is as difficult as playing it. Is the senior a LEE-bah-ro, as some people say, a LUH-bare-OH or a lih-BEAR-RO? And what the heck is it? Confusing casual volleyball fans further is that the libero (Italian for “free”) does not wear the same uniform as her teammates. When the Cougars don their trademark purple, Heeney wears white so she can stand out for officials. “Did you forget your shirt?” curious USF fans might ask. So Heeney has to educate the uninformed on the uniform. “ I have had to explain to people what my position is in volleyball more times than I can count,” Heeney said. Libero 101: Liberos are back-row defensive specialists — think of them as the defensive equivalent of designated hitters in baseball. The libero is a scrambling, tumbling, diving, backcourt player; they dig out balls by the opposing team and pass to teammates, keeping plays alive. oints and rallies can begin and end with what the libero does. Heeney is the Cougars’ designated digger. And she is darn P good at it. And no one knows this better than senior setter Amber Nieuwsma, who has been at the receiving end of Heeney’s passes since they were both freshmen. “As a setter, it is important to always get a good pass, and throughout the years it has been a blessing to have Rachel passing to me so that I know the pass will be in the right spot,” Nieuwsma said of her teammate. “Rachel is a great defensive player so I know that I can transition up to the net, and she is going to be there getting the free ball or down ball that comes to my position so that we can run our offense.” Last week, Heeney recorded her 2,000th dig as a Cougar. She is on track to finish her collegiate career as the Cougars’ alltime leader in digs. If you watch dig No. 2,000 on film, it is a routine dig, nothing special — and according to her coach, that’s what makes her special. “ Rachel works harder than anyone in practice, and her dedication to her position allows her to make an exceptional play look routine,” Cougars coach Lisa Mathes-Peters said of her libero. “I don’t need to tell you that she gives 110%.”

The first thing you notice when you watch Heeney on the court is that she is never standing still. She starts every point in her anticipatory semi-crouch, but before you can say “dig” — she is diving, flipping, hopping and somersaulting — saving the ball and serving as the party spoiler of the match. Just when it looks like the opposing six-foot outside hitter is going to blast an unreturnable ball over the net for a kill — there is Heeney, sprawling and giving all she has to dig the ball and give her team the chance to win the point. It is like an outfielder stabbing a line drive that looked like a sure double. You also cannot help but notice the beating her body takes; those bruises are not a part of the purple Cougar uniform. The kneepads help, but other times there is the indistinguishable squeak of skin on court and the thud of new bruises being formed — a libero’s personal soundtrack.

Heeney tallied her 2,000th dig on Sept. 24, 2010

“It can be a very difficult position because of the physical play,” Heeney said. “You have to be prepared to dive for the ball on every point, and you can’t worry about getting hurt. I need to be ready on every point because if I don’t do my job, my teammates can’t do their jobs.” But this is what Heeney lives for. There is nothing like erasing the impact of a big-time hitter who looks 10 feet tall when she jumps and like a live cannon when she hits the ball. “ Digging is amazing,” Heeney said. “It can be a lot of pressure, but I love it. When you stop a big hitter and keep the rally going, it just gets the whole team pumped up.”

“It takes a lot of heart and athletic ability to be a libero. Rachel is one of the best in the GPAC, and we are really going to miss her next season,” said Mathes-Peters.

I t’s tough enough playing volleyball. Add the stress of playing the most physically demanding position, then add homework, completing a double major (public accounting and business administration) and senior activities — it can be a time management nightmare.

“I’m not going to lie, it can be tough to handle it all,” said Heeney. “It takes a lot of long nights and motivation. But I look to my parents for inspiration; they are the most hard-working people that I know. My mom and dad constantly remind me that in the long run, it will all be worth it.” Looking to the future after her triumphs on the volleyball court, Heeney is currently researching graduate schools and planning a career in forensic accounting. Pronounce it however you like. Rachel Heeney is a heck of a libero, and Cougar Nation is proud to call her one of our own.
