Thoughts Dear Fellow SPGG Member, The 30th of October 2009 marked the successful conclusion of yet another important event that is close to the hearts of all SPGG members. The 30th Annual General Meeting was in fact the most successful that my memory can recall in my 20 years of involvement with SPGG. The turnout was strong and the atmosphere was comradely. Most important of all, was your overwhelming support for our policies and endorsement of our performance that warmed my heart. A few firm handshakes and “Congratulations!” from some of you at the AGM made the energy and time my EXCO colleagues and I have put in to make SPGG a better place seem all worthwhile. Thank you my Fellow SPGG Members for your unwavering support and encouragement. SPGG would not have come this far without your support. The election of Members to the 26th Executive Committee during the AGM was also unprecedented. You gave us near-unanimous thumbs up for all the 12 candidates we had presented to serve you and the Guild for the next two years. As you might remember in my inaugural speech after I was re-elected two years ago, I promised to rejuvenate our Executive Committee by bringing in younger and talented new members to serve you. I’m pleased to report that new blood has successfully been infused into the 26th Executive Committee. Mr. Lawrence Kim, Mr. Henry Yeo, Mr. Christopher Soh and Mr James Chua are the four new Ex-Co Members who have joined the team to further strengthen the vitality and vibrancy of the Guild. Together, we will implement new strategies to make SPGG the Club of Distinction among the tertiary alumni organisations
in Singapore, and to transform SPGG into an Entrepreneur Hub – where every entrepreneurial opportunity can be a reality. My deepest gratitude goes to my very close friends and comrades Dr. Lim Boh Soon, Mr. Koh Wee Keng, and Mr. Chai Wee Thong who had served with me on the Executive Committee for many years. They have stepped down to make way for the new EXCO members. I thank them for their years of tireless service and invaluable contributions to the success of SPGG. To the newly elected EXCO colleagues, I’m humbled by your confidence in my leadership, and I thank you for asking me to lead the team again. This will be my third consecutive 2-year term as the President of SPGG. Together, our vision of transforming SPGG into a “Club of Distinction” with an “Entrepreneur Hub” is within reach in the not too distant future. The Year 2009 is now coming to the end, and it’s the time again to celebrate! Let’s do it by first sharing our joy with someone less fortunate than us in the Autism Association of Singapore. Just come to the Guild House and pluck off any of the wish tags hanging on the Christmas Tree at the Front Lobby, and make the wishes of these Autistic children come true! If you wish to help the aged and the destitute from the St. Joseph’s Home & Hospice, please do so by contributing to our SPGG Christmas Charity Box. There is a list of essential food items you could purchase for them through our Front Office girls, who will do the rest to ensure that your spirit of love gets delivered to these forgotten heroes and heroines of our society. The 12th of Dec 2009 was a very special day for us. We gave out our very first Bursary Awards to our Members’ children and SP students during our Christmas Light Up.
Till you hear from me again, have a wonderful festive season with your loved ones! Merry Christmas and a Happy, Happy New Year! Yours truly

From the
Honorary General Secretary’s Desk MEMBERS SHOW STRONG SUPPORT FOR CONTINUITY At the recent Annual General Meeting held on 30 October 09, members gave their strong endorsement and support for continuity by electing the incumbent team for another term of office. This augurs well for continuity and the delivery of the action plans that the incumbent team had earlier initiated. It also speaks well of the confidence members have in the incumbent team. More importantly, it reflected the maturity, seriousness and the importance the membership accorded to the election to ensure that SPGG is in competent and capable hands. The onus now is for the newly elected Executive Committee (EXCO) to be equalled to the tasks to bring SPGG to its next phase of growth – into the next lap of making SPGG a club of distinction. This is a tall order that the new EXCO has imposed on itself for the betterment of SPGG and all its members. It will strive to make SPGG a club of distinction where members feel engaged and have a sense of ownership and pride in the way SPGG delivers all its services, activities and facilities. No doubt, over the next 2 years, new and bold initiatives will be introduced with a sense of structure, purpose and direction. And as we unfold them in phases, we seek and appeal for members’ support and understanding, be in terms of facility disruptions or participation or just by giving us suggestions and feedback. Inconveniences are inevitable as efforts to make SPGG a better place are being embarked upon. In the coming months, within the constraints of resources available, the EXCO will be deliberating on the new and bold initiatives. It shall be able to share those that are ready for implementation to keep members duly informed of the journey to make SPGG a club of distinction and a better place for all. Watch this space!

If I had done well when I took my ‘O’ levels for the first time, I would not have been able to take up this course because it was not offered then, so maybe it was a good thing that I failed at that time.
Student Member is older than most of his fellow graduates. He did badly for ‘O’ levels the first time and retook it as a private candidate. Doing it for the second time, he was determined to get grades good enough to get admission into a polytechnic. In his second attempt, his grades were not astounding but at least qualified him to be admitted to his first-choice polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic. Not only that, he also got into his desired course - Diploma in Landscape Architecture. Gabriel has an inexplicable liking for nature and landscape designs. “If I had done well when I took my ‘O’ levels for the first time, I would not have been able to take up this course because it was not offered then, so maybe it was a good thing that I failed at that time,” he recalled it with a laugh. His love for the course was the motivating factor for him to do well. Gabriel managed to obtain a GPA of 3.970 out of 4. Besides getting consistent good grades, he even impressed his internship employer, Envirospace Consultants. The company offered him a position
even before he graduated and Gabriel revealed that his pay package was even higher than what he had expected. Although the company officials knew that he would eventually leave to pursue a University degree soon, they liked his work attitude and believed that he will be able to contribute positively, even if it was just for a few months. We speak to the confident Gabriel to share more about him. Fission: Congratulations on your graduation! Now you are out of school and into the real working world. How has the experience been so far – daunting or exciting? Gabriel: Everyday of work opens up a totally different perspective, I get to learn new things and see how things are done in the real working world. Sometimes it could get extremely interesting and exciting but there are times when I am caught in a dilemma. To describe it, I would say it is a joy ride. Fission: What has been the best moment in your three years studying in Singapore Poly?

07
Gabriel: I guess it would be my 2nd year when I took part in an interiorscape design competition. In the competition, I took a very different and bold direction in my design concept. Although I came in second, it was still a proud and honorable moment for me as well as for the school. This was also the very first time I achieved result through a competition.
Fission: In your opinion, is the $200 student membership a great deal? How so?
Fission: You have won quite a number of awards, most notably the Lee Kuan Yew Award 2009. Do any of the awards have any particular meaning for you since we’re sure there must have been a lot of hard work involved?
Gabriel: The people who inspire me are my lecturers; they are the ones who make me believe that I have the ability to excel in the design industry. I really hope to thank them once again, thank you Mr Sonny Saculo and Mdm Zainon.
Gabriel: During the 3 years in Singapore Polytechnic, I never expected that one day I would be honoured with such prestigious awards. Therefore, I greatly treasure each and every award. To me, these awards will only continue to inspire me to go further and beyond myself. Fission: Share with us your fond memories of SPGG? Gabriel: I do visit SPGG frequently. But there was a particular period which I find it pretty memorable. That was the time when my lecturer and I used to visit the gym together after lesson; it was a fulfilling moment as I not only learnt from him as a student but also as a friend.
Gabriel: I find it very reasonable. Despite paying so little we still get to enjoy all the club facilities, at a discounted rate. What more can one ask for? Fission: Who and what are your sources of inspiration, if any?
Fission: Moving forward-what are your upcoming plans for the future? Gabriel: Pretty straightforward, the short term goal is to get a degree in Landscape Architecture. As for the long term goal, I hope that I can through my work, create positive impact on environmental issues. Fission: If you have the jurisdiction to pass a law on architecture, what would you choose to enforce and why? Gabriel: I hope there is a law that ensures all architecture to power its facilities (corridor lightings and elevators) with renewable energy such as solar power. If we put it into context, I believe this little change can really make a big impact in our over developed island.

SP Lecturer Edmund Lim receiving his Certificate of Appreciation from President Jimmy Lim for his whole-hearted help at the Open House
The Open House may have ended in July, but the fun continued during the thank you dinner in September. Over 100 Open House performers and helpers from Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), SPGG members and past SP graduates; inclusive of student helpers from SP, NP and Jurong Junior College who helped out in SPGG’s charity projects kept the fun and laughter up throughout the evening. We paid tribute to Michael Jackson in our own way when the emcee picked several students to compete with their best imitations of Michael Jackson’s famous dance moves. Three of
them with the slickest dance moves walked away with their prizes; decided by the loudest applause from the audience.

Work-Life Balance - All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. “I recall this all-too-familiar proverb. It’s meaning, simply, that all work with no room for play at all, makes a person easily bored and boring to others. I never quite appreciated this till in recent months where I had the opportunity to take a more organized pace in my work-life.”
Technology has changed our lives completely Emails and hand-phones have become ubiquitous. Picture this - I was having lunch with four other colleagues and at some point of our lunch gathering, all 5 of us were engaged in a conversation on our mobile phones, with none of us talking to one another. These days, the preferred mode of communication seems to be via the electronic medium. It is no longer surprising that we choose to call someone just three feet away from us instead of walking to the person and communicate face to face. The electronic medium has enabled people to be connected at any time and any place, which literally translates to making one always reachable. The down side of this accessibility is that it makes it hard for people to detach themselves from work completely. With many workplace embracing new technologies, many workers are now discovering that the very same devices which enable them to work more flexibly
and productively, can also throw their lives dangerously out of balance. Our work day is extended somewhat when we fit in the extra hours of work that are contributed out of the office, which is at the expense of our personal time used for leisure activities, rest, or family interaction. We often give little thought about sending an electronic request because it is so easy to create one and to make matters worst, most of the time we expect an instantaneous response from the other party. Research on creativity has shown that people need time out, to think and to regroup. Technology should be an enabler of our life and not a destroyer.
Five ways to preserve your nonwork time and bring back your life
1.
Check-in and check-out of work. Many of us squeeze our workday by waking up a little early, sign-on to our computer and check our emails. After putting our kids to bed, we check emails before going to bed. Unknowingly, we extend our workday to almost 18 to 20 hours. These days, people carry the Blackberry everywhere even on trips and holidays. In the long run, our quality of work and productivity will be undermined. The ability to remain creative, innovative and thoughtful suffers tremendously as our minds are given no rest.
Contributed by Writer Mr Tay Kok Choon Head of Strategic Sales Development of JobStreet Singapore
2.
Have e-mails sent out only during regular business hours unless it is an exception. Technology can help in this area and in a positive manner. If management adopts that approach, all staff within the organization will benefit from the policy giving everyone their well deserved private time.
3.
Make part time truly part time. A colleague of ours opted for the three-day work week to look after her children. Her three-day work week turned out to be a full time job due to today’s technology. She is able to log on anytime, anywhere. Everyone expects her to respond immediately on queries, not remembering that she is only collecting half her pay and her original objective of devoting more time to her family. Therefore, it is a good practice to leave an “out-of-office” message, highlighting to the sender not to expect immediate responses during your out-ofoffice hours.
4.
It is a collective arrangement. We have such arrangements for many things in our life; perhaps it is time to make such collective arrangements between fellow colleagues, supervisors and the management to make a gallant effort for all employees to set aside the required time for life outside of work.
5.
Do not remove or reduce the size of meeting areas within the office. In fact, we should put in effort to make meeting rooms more conducive for people to come together and talk things over. The fast disappearing “water cooler” discussion should be brought back to life. In conclusion, if we were to apply technology together with a work-life balance approach, and the commitment to make it possible, these elements combined should bring about greater productivity and efficiency.

Till Death
Do Us Part Fission: How did you meet each other? Lennie: Alvin’s mother and my family are close friends. We met when we visited their place here in Singapore. We were introduced and that kick started our dating and perhaps paved the way for our destiny.
30 October 2009, Friday was a special day for our member Alvin Dustin Mercado and his lady, Lennie. They had their solemnisation at the Guild’s Rooftop. We asked them to share their experience of their Rooftop celebration with us.
Fission: How long did you date before deciding to tie the knot? Alvin: We’ve known each other for quite some time but it was only when she started to live in our home (as she was looking for job) that I really got to know her quite well. Though she had only been living at our home for about 8 months, I felt that I’ve known her for a long time and knew she was the lady I’ve been searching for all my life and decided to propose to her. Fission: How did you propose to your wife? Alvin: It was very impromptu and a funny incident. She was frustrated about not being able to get a job and was deciding to leave for Philippines. I knew she was the ONE and surprised her to marry me. It happened too quickly that I did not realize I was proposing to her without a ring! (laughs) I bought her a ring eventually.
Fission: What made you decide to choose SPGG as your wedding venue? Lennie: Alvin and I wanted to do an outdoor wedding. We’ve settled for a gazebo or some sort of a garden wedding but stumbled upon SPGG website about their rooftop location and said “Why not?” Since Alvin is an alumni of SP and an SPGG member, he can use his membership privileges for the event. We went to have a view one night & we were stunned by the beautiful lighting and romantic atmosphere of the venue. I can already visualise myself and how the event will unfold! SPGG also allowed us to freely decorate and bring in our own decorator and that allows us to be creative & more liberal in our decoration decisions. We are thankful for that. We were told that there hadn’t been a wedding event on the SPGG rooftop before and we were thrilled to be the first couple to be married at that venue. Fission: Tell us more about your solemnisation; Christian way or other. Lennie: We were planning for a simple solemnisation with our families, church mates & close friends of about 90 people. We invited Pastor Davy from Singapore Bible Baptist Church to be our solemniser and we’re really honoured

Lennie: Definitely! On that day, we had to settle several errands. Our first task was to book our honeymoon chalet but Alvin had misplaced his membership card. Luckily, we were allowed to book the room using his IC. We did not have a rehearsal for the event and we allowed everything to ‘go with the flow’ on the actual day. There were little bloopers and blunders like putting the ring in the wrong hand and unable to untie the ring from the pillow. Overall, it added to the fun and uniqueness of the wedding as a whole. We had two memorable incidents: Firstly, it was drizzling! Thank God that it only happened after our marching out of the solemnisation table and the matrimony event had ended. The lightning and strong wind made our wedding extra special as it’s not your typical wedding. It added special effects in the video and pictures! Though it was only a light drizzle, we had to continue the dinner at our contingency room and SPGG staff were helpful in transferring the food to the backup location. Our guests, however continued to enjoy themselves and stayed on for the entire program. The other incident was that we had misplaced our marriage certificate. We got home and realised that it was missing. We phoned SPGG immediately to inform but that night, they did not find anything. The following day, Sasha phoned us that they had found the cert in the morning but it was drenched. They had assisted to dry the cert. The chef who found it took our cert’s registration number and he struck 4D! ROM eventually replaced us with a brand new cert at no extra cost.
that he had prepared a special matrimonial sermon for us. We felt really special as we thought solemnisation means just exchanging vows, rings & signing of the marriage cert but it turned out to be a grand event. SPGG had offered us a great wedding package at a really affordable rate that included the food, rental of the venue with tables and chairs & basic equipment. I don’t think we can find any other package as competitive as what SPGG offered. Also, by getting the package, we saved time, money and effort. Fission: Tell us more about your pre-wedding preparation – was there any special or funny incident that happened? Alvin: We only had a month to prepare for our wedding and it was very stressful and a little chaotic. Our guest list kept expanding, from 30 to 40 to 60 then finally 90. I’m grateful for the patience of Sasha, the banquet specialist. My wife liaised with her from seating arrangement to the food and Sasha’s broad experience helped us in preparation for the grand event, even on the nitty-gritty details. This irons out the creases in our wedding preparation. Sasha made it special by offering us red carpet, wedding arch and champagne fountain for a very reasonable price. She had been very helpful all throughout & we can’t thank her enough for her assistance. Fission: There’s a saying that brides and grooms find themselves in an altered state of consciousness on their wedding day. Was this true for you and your wife?
Fission: How has wedding life been for the both of you so far? Alvin: It’s really a blessing that God gave us each other. I’m excited about building a family and spending time with Lennie. We’ve only been married for three weeks now but it seems like we’ve been together for a long time. It has been a dream marriage. Fission: Any advice for couples out there planning for their wedding? Alvin: My advice is to get at least 3 months of preparation for your wedding. You do not need a wedding planner; all you need is time, creativity & inspiration. Plan your budget well - your total expenses will go up as your big day nears so be conservative with this approach. Planning for the wedding can be stressful and an enjoyable experience. It also allows you and your other half to spend some quality time together.

Discoloured teeth A Common Phenomenon Do our teeth get darker as we get older? Discoloured teeth are a common phenomenon. Depending on the criteria applied, almost the entire population can be considered to have discoloured teeth. Many of my patients tell me that they feel that their teeth have grown darker over the years. This leads to the question: is this a genuine phenomenon or just the person’s imagination? For the most part, unfortunately, it is a genuine phenomenon. Our teeth tarnish and grow darker for a variety of reasons. Some are beyond our control but many can be influenced by our lifestyle choices.
First the factors we cannot influence much
Cracks and surface imperfections Our teeth are constantly absorbing impact stress. Every time we bite down it is like taking 2 glasses or porcelain cups and banging them together. Over time chips, hairline cracks and other defects will start to form. And of course as our teeth get older more and more of these features accumulate. Stain can gather in these features and seep deeper into the structure of the tooth. So when an older person complains that his/her teeth seem to get stained more and more easily, there is a basis for this observation.
Changes in the tooth structure Teeth grow more yellow and more translucent as they age because of increasing mineral content in the dentine (the inner layer of the hard tooth structure) over the years. Young teeth have pretty porous dentine and is more opaque and lighter in colour. As the tooth is subjected to more wear and the pulp (the nerve of the tooth) grows older, minerals are laid down inside the porous dentine. It’s nature’s way of compensating for the inevitable wear on the outer enamel layer. This makes the tooth structure more dense and less sensitive so that even if the enamel is thin or completely worn away the dentine can better accept the chewing forces.
What about the lifestyle factors? Tooth decay I consider tooth decay a lifestyle factor because to a large extent it is preventable. Tooth decay causes the dentine to turn first brown and then black if it is left unchecked for too long. This colour can be seen through the enamel or through tooth coloured filling materials. In most cases I do try to remove this discolored material before placing a filling but sometimes, when a cavity is already very deep I find I have to leave some of the brown (but hard) dentine in place or risk hitting the nerve and having to do a root canal treatment on the tooth. This same discoloration caused by tooth decay can also be present over large areas of the teeth if oral hygiene has

been poor for a period of time. What happens is that the bacteria plaque which has not been cleaned off attacks, softens and discolours the entire surface but if the person realizes this is happening and improves his/her oral hygiene, the surface can ‘heal’ or re-harden with the removal of the plaque and introduction of fluoride through tooth brushing and toothpaste. However a dark yellow or brown patch is left. The stain does not disappear even though the tooth structure is hard.
Food staining Beverages like red wine, coffee and tea cause surface tarnishing of the enamel surface. The stain can also penetrate beneath the surface of the enamel and discolour the body of the enamel and dentine of the tooth over time

Tobacco staining Cigarette and cigar smoke contains plenty of dark coloured substances and these get onto the surface of the teeth (and the gums) where they get stuck to the surface imperfections and the plaque and tartar. Chewing tobacco also results in the same substances being released and affecting the teeth.
Erosion of teeth Acidic foods and beverages cause erosion of the enamel and dentine facilitating bacteria invasion and seepage of staining substances into the tooth structure. Chinese vinegar for example is black and very acidic.
Corroding metallic filling materials Silver amalgam has been the mainstay of the dental profession’s efforts to repair teeth for more than a century. It is strong, simple to use, durable and well accepted by the body (despite concerns about the mercury in the material). However the material does corrode and when the corrosion products seep into the tooth structure the tooth can be discoloured. This is usually greyish or black. Paradoxically these corrosion products kill bacteria reducing the likelihood of renewed tooth decay.
So what can we do about it? We cannot prevent our teeth from getting older but we can influence the amount of ‘insult’ they are subjected to. Just a few simple pointers 1) Avoid very sour foods and beverages especially sticky sweets. The effect of erosion is dependent on exposure time. 2) Do not smoke 3) Practice good oral hygiene 4) If you are aware that you grind your teeth when you sleep, get a nightguard made. This protects your teeth from being worn down and reduces the incidence of cracks and chipping 5) Visit your dentist regularly and have your teeth thoroughly examined at least once a year. This reduces the risk of undetected cavities and damage to existing fillings.

The Science of
Numbers Personal Numbers Profiling –
An interesting and exciting way to know more about yourself and people around you.
65168 32116 61002 41691 05708
On 16 September, more than 50 participants were introduced to a profoundly simple and effective profiling tool at our Grand Ballroom. It succeeded to help the participants uncover their basic personal strength and challenges, and to better understand the people around them. This tool is a powerful discovery based on the science of Numbers (1 to 9). It is a combination of various ideologies and theories. This system is tested with more than 400 thousand live birth data over a period of 7 years and it is proven to have 90% accuracy. Interestingly, the workshop facilitator Mr Tham Fun Yuen unlocked this ageless wisdom and married it with modern applications that will rise to new possibilities for self-awareness, leadership and success for individuals and corporations.
Transcend Beyond Your Destiny Two weeks later, on 30 September, Mr Tham held another workshop which focused on transcending beyond your birth potential (Character, personality, talent, etc) and how to consciously create the life experiences that one desires. The workshop was based on 3 categories - The principles of the “Universal Laws” for effective results, Proprietary Methodologies for easy understanding and immediate applications and lastly the practice of “Self-Mastery” – (shifting from a victim position to taking charge).
Mid-Autumn Festival 2009 Mid-Autumn Festival is a joyous occasion apt for family gathering and good food! Held on 3rd October’09, we celebrated the festival with more than 50 members who were treated to a scrumptious mid-autumn dinner and with activities and programmes inspired by traditional Chinese art forms. The pre-event known as Caricature (a representation, especially pictorial or literary, in which the subject’s distinctive, features or peculiarities are deliberately exaggerated to produce a comic or grotesque effect) was extremely popular with both the Adults and kids! Every family present wanted a family portrait that was uniquely done. There was also a showcase of some Chinese Orchestra instruments made out of cardboards which were later utilised during a game between the parents and their children. Parents were made to be the Orchestra and their kids the dancers and the actors. A fiery performance by Jimmy the Juggler left the audience in awe with his dangerous but impressive stunts! The evening ended with the festival’s beloved lantern walkabout at the Singapore Polytechnic Stadium with our very own Chang-Er leading the way!
