President’s Thoughts Dear Fellow Member, Our heartfelt thanks to you for your resounding vote of confidence in passing the resolution to amend certain articles in our constitution, pertaining to the making of Associate & Corporate Memberships even more attractive at the 31st AGM at the Grand Ballroom on 29 Oct. We are most appreciative of your overwhelming support for it and look forward to implementing the changes as soon as we get the approval from the Registry of Society. We are optimistic that your thumbs up to our marketing campaign to reach out to the younger SP graduates and a wider group of diploma/degree holders will bear fruits in our attempt to substantially increase our membership strength. We are also pleased to announce that Life, Ordinary (Non-transferable) and Associate (non-transferable) members will soon have a chance to convert their membership into a transferable one. We are presently working out the mechanism for such a conversion and will let you know the details by early next year. With more Members in our fold, revenue and the vibrancy of the Guild will increase and will most definitely help us to work towards our recently unveiled, revitalised Vision and Mission statements of making SPGG ‘A Club of Distinction with Activities of Diversity’. A good testimony to our new Vision & Mission was our 10th GuildHouse Anniversary Celebrations which was held on 10 October 2010. Then, we had a 10year Walk to our old SPGG site at the Hilltop at SP to rekindle fond memories and to raise funds for our Bursary Fund 2012, a Kiddy Party for the children of our families to have a good time, a Cosmic Bowling event for families and friends to get together and have sporty fun, and of course the grand 101010 Celebration Dinner where Members, SP graduates, and friends got together with SP past and present key management staff to celebrate an entertaining evening,

provided solely by SP students and Graduates. Besides, we had the honour and privilege of having SP Principal Tan Hang Cheong and Past Principals Low Wong Fook and Khoo Kay Chai to grace the 101010 celebrations as our Guestsof-Honour, thus making it an indeed memorable and historical one for us! Unanimous Support For Constitutional Amendments at SPGG’s 31st AGM Members gave their thumbs up to go ahead with the constitutional amendments as proposed at the 31st Annual General Meeting, on Fri, 29 Oct at the Grand Ballroom.

The four main amendments to the Constitution which were tabled and got the unanimous support of the attendees were as follows:

12A Associate Membership To re-classify current Associate Membership as Associate (non-transferable) Membership

– Persons who are Associate Members before 1 Dec 2010 shall be classified as Associate (Non-Transferable) Members. – To allow the Committee to determine the conversion fee to be paid by an Associate (non-transferable) Member to convert his membership into an Associate (Transferable) membership. – To maintain that they shall have no voting rights and cannot hold office in the Guild.

12(1)(b) Associate Membership To re-define Associate Membership and make it transferable

– To allow all Diploma or higher qualified graduates from recognised institutions to join us as Associate Members. – To maintain that they shall have no voting rights and cannot hold office in the Guild.

11 (1) Corporate Member To re-define Corporate Membership

– To open up Corporate Membership to any Singapore registered Corporation (nominees can be any management staff regardless of whether they are SP graduates) or Corporation registered as a branch in Singapore. – For corporations not incorporated in Singapore, the corporation must have employees who are graduates of SP. – Remove restriction on nominees. – Corporate members shall have no voting rights and cannot hold office in the Guild.

16 (1) Membership Conversion To facilitate the conversion of memberships

– To permit any Life member or Ordinary (non-transferable) Member, within a prescribed period, which the Committee may in its sole and absolute discretion determine from time to time, apply to convert their membership to become an Ordinary Member. – The Committee shall determine the conversion fee to be paid by a Life Member or Ordinary (non-transferable) Member of the Guild.

14A (5) & 36(1) Attendees at AGM To re-define voting rights and categories of members who may attend AGM.

– AGM shall be attended by all members except the following: Student Members, Term Members, Social Members, Corporate Term Members, Corporate Members & Nominees. – Social Members shall have no Voting Rights and cannot hold office in the Guild.

Addressing the 70-strong crowd of Members, President Jimmy Lim informed that the Guild’s financial performance had remained positive in the fiscal year 2009/2010 and its cash in hand had improved by a healthy 29% from $2,000,000 in the previous year. He, however, cautioned that with the recent $496,000 renovation of the Wellness Centres and the reduction in the income from our

And now that the Members have voted in favour of the constitutional amendments, SPGG would work towards reaching out to the 152,000 SP graduates and the more than 700,000 other diploma/ advanced diploma/degree graduates who do not have a Guild House to belong to, and the corporate organisations which need a club to cater to the needs of their organisations.

Highlights of the Year Several achievements over the Fiscal year included transforming the Guild into an Entrepreneur Hub, more membership benefits, and the strengthening of ties with our alma mater, Singapore Polytechnic.

Jackpot machines due to the attractiveness of the two new Integrated Resorts, our cash balance may dwindle in the current fiscal year 2010-2011. The President thus urged our Members to regularly patronise the facilities at SPGG to help us generate enough cash – about $1.6 million to facilitate the much needed upgrading of our Food & Beverage outlets and the Front Lobby of our ageing Guild House. He added, ‘The fiscal year 2010/2011 will be a critical year in our journey to become a ‘Club of Distinction with Activities of Diversity’. He stressed on the importance of recruiting more Members as a stronger membership base would mean more patronage of the Guild’s facilities and more revenue to the Guild. However, to recruit more, he pointed out that we need to change the tools involved in the marketing of our memberships so as to make them more attractive to a wider pool of intellectuals from recognised local and foreign institutions.

SPGG also continued to cement the bonds with other tertiary alumnus like National University of Singapore Society (NUSS), Nanyang Technology University Alumni (NTUA) and Ngee Ann Alumni (NAA) and other external organisations such as SingTel Recreational Club, Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG) and the Singapore Business Federation (SBF). In conclusion, the President said “It is our Vision to make SPGG a Club of Distinction – a place to work, meet, innovate, learn and relax. Above all, as a place for people who crave the inspiration, resources, knowledge, connections and investment to start and grow new ideas”.

opened as scheduled on 13 November 2010. It was a soft opening to allow the Wellness Centres to go through a period of “load test” before an official opening is held. Within a week after the soft opening, we received many compliments, feedback and suggestions. No doubt, we will promptly follow-up on the many feedback and suggestions that are feasible and practical, in particular those that hinge on safety. However, one common feedback received was the wet floor that was experienced in most areas of the Male Wellness Centre and the potential danger it posed. Some Members gave feedback that they were appalled by the behaviour of some Members who practically wet the whole Wellness Centre by moving around in a waist-wrapped towel dripping with water, probably after spa or shower. One way, as some had suggested, is to black-list such Members or impose a penalty. We are far from doing that yet and hope we will never have to. This is one of the dilemmas of social life which pit out the selfinterest of inconsiderates against that of the larger group. This is where the social etiquette of all users of the Wellness Centres is of paramount importance to ensure that the Wellness Centres are safe for the enjoyment of all. Of equal importance is the need to observe the rules and regulations. All these will go a long way towards efforts to contain the maintenance costs. By any comparison, our Wellness Centres now rank high if not the best among the equivalent commercial ones where per admission fees far exceeds the monthly subscription a SPGG Member pays. For SPGG Members, it is a privilege to use the Wellness Centres for free. It will be and continue to be so as long as Members help in upkeeping the Wellness Centres by observing good housekeeping habits when using it and help to police it against wonton and willful abuse. The Wellness Centres are the show pieces of SPGG and it prides itself of having such a facility. All SPGG Members must also be equally proud of it as well. We therefore seek Members co-operation and understanding to ensure it continues to be so in the years ahead for others to emulate. Then, it will deservedly evolve to be an icon of SPGG. Perhaps Kurt Vonnegut in his novel Cat’s Cradle (1963) that focuses on the role of technology in human society said it better:

Newly Renovated Wellness Centres Are Now Open

doors on 13 Nov, after a half-a-million dollar renovation, exposing a stylish, modern, and eye catching new decor bursting with colours brown and green, exuding the earth, nature and Zen-like feel.

There are 120 and 80 lockers respectively at the Male and Female Wellness Centres. Each locker has good ventilation and a shoe rack both within the locker and outside, just below the designated locker.

The chic new look of the Spas should inspire you and your guests to have a rejuvenating time there! The flooring, ceiling, lightings and doors have all been spruced up to give you that warm, inviting feel. Dip into our hot/cold pools or the Jacuzzi for that invigorating massage. Or just relax and shed some toxins in our refreshing steam and sauna rooms!

Steam & Sauna Rooms New Sauna heating equipment has been installed. The Steam and Sauna rooms can now be easily identified as their glass doors make them easily recognisable.

10-Year Walk A Journey Down Memory Lane It was a fine and pleasant morning on 10th October 2010 when almost 80 participants and staff arrived at the Guild House to an early start of our 10th anniversary celebrations! As participants started strolling in as early as 8.30am, the dri-fit SPGG polo tees were immediately put to the test. Everyone donned their crisp new tops and checked out their goody bags to the music provided by SP’s DJClub. 10:10am soon arrived and it was time to embark on the 1010m walk! After a brief introduction by the coordinator about the walk and our present location, the group marched on towards the Singapore Polytechnic Staff Centre. The sands of time added more function and practicality to the poly buildings, despite the indifference of its exterior. Proceeding on towards the Moberly block, additions started to surface – extensions to Polycentre and the student hub @ Moberly. Today’s students have a myriad of ways to

express themselves in poly: Graffiti, Theatre, even through barbequing food! (it’s 20 cents for 15 minutes of heat!) SP is certainly developing her students in all aspects! Moving through the familiar Admin building and recognising its external changes, the group arrives at the Library and its new and chic Colours café. And while we see more planned additions to the school, we finally arrive at the highlight of our walk – InnoVillage, where the old SPGG Guild House used to stand! Built entirely out of recycled materials, InnoVillage was built in a way that will affect its original landscape the least – although the old water tank that used to overlook the area was removed. Devoted to innovation in earth-friendly ways, the place has plants on its walls to cool the building, and uses natural sunlight for indoor

lighting! Participants were given a chance to take a break at the Pit stop, tour the facilities, understand more about the SP Alumni and even watched a 3D movie made by our very own SP Students! Finally, we took descent on the nature trail (complete with fallen logs left in their original position!) and stepped into the newest part of SP where Dover MRT opens to. The Convention Centre and up and coming Plaza concluded the tour for the morning as we all headed back to SPGG. It was surely a great workout for one and all!

There

was a party for the kids too on the 10.10.10. morning! While their parents were taking a walk down memory lane to SP in the 10-year walk, the young ones were treated to Balloon Sculpting, Magic Tricks, Games and Dancing stints.

The kids were full of mischief, laughter and smiles towards the end of the party. Lunch was served soon after their parents returned from the 10year walk to SPGG and the kids just could not stop telling their folks about their fun!

A favourite item of the day was getting the kids to watch a video of Anamaniacs and grooving to the fun tunes of Anamaniacs Macarena!

Cosmic Bowling Cosmic Bowling just got crazier at the Bowling Alley on Sun, 10 Oct. Seventy participants got to bowl unlimited games with their families and guests over 2 bowling sessions!

Many took this opportunity to brush up their skills and had friendly competition among their team mates while some were enjoying the moment as a family playing as one.

A few lucky participants also walked away with bowling coupons and prizes when they were the first to get 3 strikes in a row in a game, highest points, and more!

Performances The Poolside was transformed into a dining and performance area with acts ranging from Daiko Drummers, the melodious Symphony Band and String Ensemble, Wu Shu stunts, grooves by SP Dancespot, Live Bands to Illusionists!

Special day for 3 Members 3 Members to whom the date, 10 October was special. Our Honorary Assistant Treasurer, Mr Christopher Soh celebrated his 60th birthday with his friends while Mr & Mrs Tan and Mr & Mrs Kan celebrated their 12th and 18th Wedding Anniversary respectively. They were all presented with a delicious cake each, making it an even more memorable event.

Fund-raising for Bursary Fund 2012 Another important highlight of the celebrations were the fund-raising efforts for the SPGG Bursary Fund 2012. In all, a total of $12,900 was raised via the 10Year Walk, auction of liquor bottles at the 101010 Celebration Dinner & members’ generous donations. These funds will be used to provide financial assistance to the needy schooling children of our Members and also to Singapore Polytechnic (SP) students whose families are facing financial difficulties. SPGG’s very own Tsunami Survivor recollects his Boxing Day Tragedy

Charlie was in his room at the resort when the Tsunami struck. The lights went out and there was a crash. He ran to open the door of his villa and water came rushing in, pushing him and everything in its way.

Six years ago, what became known as the Boxing Day Tsunami rolled in, devastating sections of Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Maldives and India. The Guild’s F&B Manager, Mr Charlie Lee survived the Tsunami in Thailand on 26 December 2004. Charlie was then the General Manager at the Blue Village Pakarang Resort in Khao Lak, where he started working just 3 months before the mega tsunami. Charlie narrates to Fission his unforgettable experience..

Chairs, tables, and the bed slammed against Charlie’s head. “I managed to climb onto a table, but within seconds, the water rose over my head and I thought: this is the end.” Charlie mentioned that his family was with him in Khao Lak for about 1 month over the school holidays and was fortunate that they had left earlier. His wife and three sons, aged between 9 and 15 then, had been with him when the school holidays started. His sons had wanted to stay with him till after Christmas but he disagreed. “I wanted them to return to Singapore earlier as school was going to start and they needed to purchase their books and prepare for school.” Charlie shared that at that time, it was his boys that gave him the strength to swim for his life. “I am not a strong swimmer. When the water rose over my head which was already touching the ceiling, I thought I was finished. Then in a split second, I thought of my family and my boys and called upon God for help.”

“I thought to myself, I have to make it, I have to survive…I took a last breath and swam for my life,” The water was black and thick with mud. He could not see anything, so he had to feel his way out to the door. Once out of the door, he saw people screaming, looking for their families and friends. “I was very, very lucky, there were two timber logs floating nearby. I swam to one and held on. I noticed three young boys and shouted at them to hold on to the logs.. the four of us clung on till the log somehow knocked into the bar.” Charlie added that they then climbed onto the roof of the bar and waited 1½ hours before it was safe to come down. After the worst was over, Charlie, along with the help of another hotel worker, led the boys and other survivors inland to a small village hut where locals gave them water. The police helped to take them to a hospital. For two days, Charlie was unable to contact his family. All electricity and telecommunications were down. He returned to Singapore soon after and was treated at the Singapore General Hospital for cuts and bruises and a bile infection caused by polluted water. “It was a like a nightmare that I just want to forget about.”

I want to cherish this new life!

Putting the incident behind him, Charlie shares that the whole tsunami incident gave him the chills for the first two months. He had phobia of beaches and loud sounds. He did not head out much anywhere and spent most times at home. After two months, he added, “I said to myself, I cannot go on like this forever. I had set my mind to forget the past and move on with life.” When asked about his perception of life, family and worldly joys after his Tsunami Tragedy, Charlie said, “I am fortunate to have survived the Tsunami. I thank God for that all the time and it’s like, this is my second chance in life! I want to cherish this new life with my family and loved ones and nothing else matters.“

SGCC edge out SPGG in Pool Friendly

Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC) needed a tie break to edge out SPGG 26-25 in the friendly battle for the Annual Pool Challenge Trophy at our premises on 23 October. 8-ball and 9-ball formats were played concurrently in singles and doubles formats and points were awarded for each game victory – with 2 points for singles, 3 for doubles, and 5 for Straight Pool. In fact, SGCC started out the afternoon strongly by winning most of the singles and doubles matches. But with the brave-hearts of SPGG clawing their way back into contention with victories in two doubles and two Straight Pool matches, they forced SGCC to play the tie break before bowing out to them through the cue of David Lee. David then went on to lift the Challenge Trophy from our Chairman of Lifestyle, Sports & Wellness, James Chua, and ensured that the possession of the trophy remained with SGCC for the second year running.

SPGG ANNUAL BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Derrick, Priscilla, Kok Guan, Thomas, Alfred & Alvin steal the limelight This year’s SPGG Annual Bowling Championships from 6 to 26 Sep was keenly contested, featuring 5 categories of competition namely the Men’s Open, Ladies’ Open, Youth, Graded and the Senior events. In the Men’s Open, after an intensive fight, Derrick Liau clinched 1907 points to beat runner-up Raymond Wong, by 32 points. Our Ladies’ Open bowlers too put up a good show with Priscilla Chua grabbing the crown with her card of 1698 points. In the Graded Masters category, Ng Kok Guan was at his peak, carding

1887 points to bag the title. Fifty points behind, in second place was Pamela Huang.

The seniors had their share of fun too with Alvin Chua edging out James Chua for the top honours with 1939 points.

The Graded Masters Youth category saw Thomas Ng bowl his way past Desmond Chan by 5 points to take the top spot with his 1650 total, whilst Alfred Bay chalked up 1958 points, 2 more than Donric Sng to emerge tops in the Youth Masters Category.

SPGG Gives Back Program The Guild is proud to turn our X’mas tree into a Wishing Tree once again and have it specially dedicated to the children and youth of Life Community Services Society (LCSS). From 27 Nov, the SPGG Wishing Tree will bear 30 tags stating the Christmas wishes of these less fortunate children. Members who are keen in granting a wish can simply register at the Front Desk with the tag you have plucked off. The Wishing Tree will be on-going until 28 Dec, after that the gifts of love will be presented to the youth recipients.
