Thirty-two SPGG Bursary Awards to be given out this year Thirty-two students from our alma mater, Singapore Polytechnic, will be receiving bursaries worth $400 each at the SPGG Bursary Awards 2013 luncheon on Saturday, 8 December at the Aster Room. With none of our SPGG membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; children applying for a bursary this year, all our resources totalling $12,800 will be given out to SP students, who are facing difficulties in continuing with their SP education due to the financial hardship of their families. The Bursary selection was done on 23 October by the SPGG Bursary Award panel consisting of SPGG Member Mr Lim Wei Cai, Chairman of Member and Student Welfare Tay Choon Mong, Assistant Honorary Treasurer Henry Yeo, SP Alumni Relations Manager Rachel Lou and Director of SP Alumni Relations Office and Industry Services Song Nay Hay.

The 33rd Annual General Meeting SPGG held its 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, 20 October at the Grand Ballroom with a turnout of 74 members comprising 28 Life, 42 Ordinary and 4 Associate members. President Vincent Lim called the meeting to order at 1.30pm and proceeded to give an overview of the Guild’s past year achievements, events held, and issues and challenges faced before confirming the Minutes of the 32nd AGM, held on 28 Oct 2011. President Lim was pleased to announce that besides achieving a record cash balance of about $2.73 million in the last Fiscal Year (FY), our Food & Beverage operations had also seen a profit for the first time in the history of SPGG! What’s more, our Jackpot takings had increased by 25% when compared to the previous FY. Mr Lim was extremely grateful to Singapore Polytechnic as he shared the good news with members that SP would forego the cumulative interest of $1.05 million owing to them. This would thereby reduce the outstanding principal sum to $2.175 million and would allow SPGG to settle the dues by 2018! Several achievements over the last FY included the completion of the renovation of the Poolside Café and Lustre Lounge (formerly known as the Prince Edward Lounge), the successful mass media membership recruitment campaign, the introductions of many new members’ benefits, the forming of 5 interest groups, the setting up of the SPGG Endowment Fund and also our reciprocal and affiliate tie-ups with local and overseas clubs. On the membership front, we had seen a record high recruitment of 385 new members – an increase of 56% from the previous FY. SPGG also welcomed three new Corporate Members in FY 12, namely the Marketing Institute of Singapore (MIS), Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD). Mr Lim also emphasised that SPGG would continue to strengthen its ties with our alma mater, the Singapore Polytechnic, and other alumni groups in Singapore such as NUSS and NAA, and also other local social clubs such as

SIA Group Sports Club and Hollandse Club. He spoke at length on the future plans including the upcoming renovation of the Front Lobby, Jackpot Room, Study Room and Business Centre. He said that this would be followed by a next phase of renovation to The Restaurant, enhancements of Spa facilities, and also the re-branding SPGG to realise our Vision, and more! New Management Staff at SPGG

Priscilla Tan Sales & Marketing Manager Ms Priscilla Tan came on board SPGG on 22 October as a Sales and Marketing Manager. In her new post, Priscilla will oversee all sales and marketing efforts, drive more membership sales with interesting marketing programs, elevate the SPGG brand with more social and corporate tie ups for greater brand visibility in the marketplace, and engage the youth segment through social media and relevant events to build brand interaction and sustainable membership growth. Priscilla brings with her over 10 years of sales and marketing experience in various establishments namely Shangri-la hotel and resort, Mediacorp and latest being LG Electronics where she handled the marketing for the Home Entertainment range of products. Her Message to members: “We will continue to make SPGG a member-centric club. Look forward to seeing all of you at our year end Countdown Party!

Mohd Rudiawan Banquet Sales Manager Rudiawan joined us as Banquet Sales Manager in August. A graduate from SHATEC in culinary skills and also a Business Management graduate from MDIS, he has been in the banquet industry for 14 years. He started off his career in the kitchen for 7 years and slowly made his way out into the service aspects of the Food and Beverage industry. Rudiawan spent the next 7 years in events catering and management. His achievements include the National Day Parade 2012; rehearsal and actual for over 14,000 participants, execution of wedding events, product launches and cocktail parties for corporate clients like BMW, Orange Tee and National Kidney Foundation. He was also instrumental in the planning and the running of the 25th year anniversary of the PAP PCF Group. At SPGG, Rudiawan hopes to excel in his position as a Banquet Sales Manager and bring new sales revenue for the banquet department. He also wishes to foster a great sense of camaraderie and build a positive and cheery bond between SPGG members and Staff.

Mark Chan Executive Sous Chef Mark Chan joined SPGG in June as an Executive Sous Chef and is overseeing the Poolside Café kitchen and also assisting the Executive Chef in the kitchen operations of the Restaurant in his absence. A foodie himself, Mark started off his career as a steward in the kitchen doing dishes and slowly developed his passion for cooking. An opportunity arose for him in his hometown, Klang in Kuala Lumpur where he worked in a 3-star hotel before getting his first real break at Renaissance Hotel in KL where he worked for a year. Moving on, he spent 10 years in Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, rising proudly from a Cook to a Chef De Partie. Prior to joining SPGG, he held positions as a Sous Chef at a buffet restaurant ‘Kaleidescope ‘ in Atlantis The Palms, Dubai; Head Chef in SevenAteNine restaurant from the Soul Out Group, Kuala Lumpur, and the last was as the Head Chef of Tapas Wine Bar at Holland Village. His goal is to ensure that he can put a smile on every customer’s face and fill their tummies with delicious, clean and fun-filling food. As Mark puts it “Simplicity is the best way to go, Bon appétit!” 6 < DEC 2012 - FEB 2013

SP Principal declares SPGG Signage Open Guest of Honour and Principal of Singapore Polytechnic, Tan Hang Cheong, officially declared open the SPGG Signage at the main entrance of the club on Tuesday, 6 November.

Our GOH did it in style by cutting a red ribbon to set free into the sky a whole lot of red and gold balloons that were covering the SPGG signage after a roaring welcome from SP’s very own lion dancers. Witness to this Official Opening Ceremony were SP’s key management staff and our Executive Committee members, who were first treated to a cocktail reception at the Piano Lounge before proceeding to the Carnation Room for a sumptuous lunch. There, our SPGG President Vincent Lim thanked SP and its Principal for sponsoring the signage and setting the path for a new era of co-operation between SPGG and SP, our alma mater. As a token of our appreciation, President Lim then presented a small replica of the signage to Singapore Polytechnic and Mr Tan. And with live music flowing from the students of the School of Diploma of Music and Audio Technology (DMAT), everyone enjoyed the 8-course sit down lunch that followed until it was time to say goodbye at 2.00pm.

taxi taxi It was all ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ on 25 July as Director Kelvin Sng, cast and crew of upcoming movie Taxi! Taxi! were seen shooting a scene at the drop off area at SPGG! Members and staff of SPGG were star struck as they saw their favourite actor, Gurmit Singh up close and personal. Taxi! Taxi! (starring Mark Lee, Gurmit Singh, Jazreel Low, Gan MeiYan, Lai Meng, Chua Jin Sen and Roysten Ong) is a social comedy set in the metropolitan citystate of Singapore, told through the encounters of two characters who are in what is widely perceived as the most sociable profession on the island – taxi drivers. Inspired by famed blogger Dr Cai Mingjie’s real life accounts as a taxi driver in his bestseller “Diary of a Taxi Driver: True Stories From Singapore’s Most Educated Cabdriver”, the movie follows the trials and tribulations of a retrenched microbiology scientist, Professor Chua, as he turns to taxi driving after several failed job attempts. Catch Taxi! Taxi! at cinemas near you on 3 January 2013!

9 A total of 17 vendors visited the Club during the Request for Proposal site briefing on 5 September. Seven keen vendors submitted their proposals on tender closing dateline. After an intensive review of all proposals by the Task Force, it was decided to award the contract to X-Treme Design & Associates for its concept and design that closely matched the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Vision and Mission. The new lobby will feature a brand new SPGG history wall, a new display of the Vision and Mission statements, and two specially installed LED panels to keep members updated on happenings, ongoing promotions, functions and activities at the Club.

Front Office The Lobby with enhanced features and an enclosed front desk will create a distinctive Club experience for members and their guests that we all can be proud of.

Study Room A modern and contemporary study room with increased capacity for members will sit nicely behind the waiting lounge at the lobby area, next to the new reception. Brightly designed with refreshing dĂŠcor, it will give an energised feel and inspire your creative juices.

Interview with Mr Peter Chen, our Honorary Member Mr Peter Chen, who was the former Senior Minister of State for Education, has just contributed $40,000 to the soon-to-be launched SPGG Endowment Fund. Fission caught up with him recently to find out about what had motivated him to support this cause.

F: What prompted you to donate to the SPGG Endowment Fund? PC: My association with SPGG goes back to the beginning of 1997 when I assumed the office of Senior Minister of State for Education. Ever since my retirement in late 2001, I have maintained contact with you and was honoured with an Honorary Membership. I first heard about the idea of SPGG starting an Endowment Fund for SP students from Mr Jimmy Lim, who was then the SPGG President, almost two years ago. Quite fittingly, he is now the Chairman of the SPGG Endowment Fund. The initiative coming from SPGG is a really meaningful act of kindness, care and compassion, but more than that! It is a touching expression of gratitude, appreciation and thanks for what the alma mater SP and what Society have done for all of you. There is a well worn Chinese expression 饮水思源 (“When you drink, you always remember the

source of the water”). However hackneyed the expression may have become, there is no better way to symbolise how SPGG feels about the Endowment Fund. This prompted me to recall what a small group of former students of my late wife did in 2007. They were from the Class of 1977’s E/6 of New Town Secondary School (NTSS), 30 years before. This small group are no longer students! They are today successful professionals in various fields: University Professor, Anesthesiologist, a Group Director in URA, Human Resource Consultant. Unknown to me, they organised their fellow class mates of 30 years ago and started an award for the students of NTSS in memory of my late wife Mrs Chen Hup Ee. Coincidentally the NTSS today is just next door to SPGG. In her speech at the first award ceremony, the former student Ms Fun Siew Leng, now Group Director of Director Urban Planning and Design of URA, said, “Most of us came from low to middle-income families … It was the teachers who made the difference. They gave so much in making our lessons interesting, pushing and challenging us so that we were inspired to make the grade… It is one of these teachers whom I would like to single out for mention … Our form teacher, the late Mrs Chen Hup Ee, took us for Secondary 3 and insisted with the Principal then, that she be assigned us through Secondary 4 as well. She built confidence and selfesteem in us. She was perceptive and could spot students facing problems either at school or home and went about helping us. Never in an obtrusive way – she was always subtle. Never pushy – she just showed that she cared ... Even today, I remember some of her lessons vividly. I remember her feisty spirit and her love for life and teaching.”

PC: The cause of SPGG’s Endowment has been very well expressed, i.e., to ensure that “needy SP students who are experiencing financial hardship are able to get a bursary – even though they are not academically outstanding.” I was very happy to hear the Principal of SP, Mr Tan Hang Cheong explain to me the selection criteria for recipients of the bursaries that will be given under the SPGG Endowment and some other similar Endowment funds in SP. There is no shortage of financial help for those who perform brilliantly in their academic results. The academically brilliant will be channeled into the numerous scholarships available to them. But what about the less brilliant? They too deserve a chance and it is for them that we can “make a difference” with the financial help they need and the encouragement for them to make the effort to do even better.

F: What do you hope to achieve with your contribution? PC: Each individual’s contribution is but a drop in the ocean, but collectively I hope that it swells into the “mighty ocean” of compassion of care for others and becomes the catalyst that will push and challenge everyone to do better and achieve his full potential. F: Is there anything else SPGG should do to promote this cause? PC: To reach out to more of the SP alumni. Find a way to group smaller donors, if possible. F: Are you looking forward to meeting the beneficiaries of your contribution?

It is my late wife’s life-long pursuit as a teacher, in wanting to “make a difference” in her students and “she just showed that she cared” that have prompted me to make this donation in her memory.

PC: Occasionally, so that I can get a sense of whether the Endowment is achieving its objectives.

F: What do you Endowment cause?

PC: Tell them about the care and encouragement of the donors for the recipients. And the hope of the donors that the recipients too would, one day, stretch out their hand – to give!

Mid-Autumn Fun at SPGG

Our Guild was buzzing with Mid-Autumn Celebration activities on Saturday, 22 September. There was a mini bazaar, great music by the Singapore Polytechnic students of Diploma in Music and Audio Technology (DMAT) and most important of all – great company! The mini bazaar started off the celebrations at 4pm with booths dealing with clothes, IT accessories, face-painting, aura reading and manicure and pedicure. DMAT students filled the air with evergreen mandarin and English tunes while the gorgeous Chang Er met and greeted everyone who attended the party. An entertaining Puppeteer Show by Mascots & Puppets Specialists, Streets of Singapore, wowed everyone present . Games were also not left out of the celebration! The children’s lantern making competition was particularly a hit, with the kids coming up with many creative designs. The little ones all went home happy as each and everyone of them were rewarded with at least a consolation prize. The adults had their share of the fun too, participating in a Pomelo Peeling competition! The fastest pomelo peeler was timed under a minute and he walked away with a bottle of wine as the top prize. The celebration came to an end with a lantern walk around the SP Sports Complex. With the children lighting up the traditional lanterns provided in their goodie bags and walking together as one big SPGG family, SPGG achieved its aim of reminding the young of the importance of celebrating such festivities.

Happy Children’s Day It was all grins at this year’s Children’s Day weekend from 5-7 October at SPGG! Our Events team went up to all the children that were in the premises to present them with balloons and goodie bags to make their day!

The Art of

Face Reading Master Emily from New Trend Lifestyle shared her knowledge about Facial Analysis – The Art of Face Reading – with 33 participants at the Aster Room on Tuesday, 25 September.

Defining face reading as “what’s hidden in you can be shown on your face”, she spoke on how one can judge a person’s character, thoughts, and good or bad intentions just by looking at a person. According to Emily, an important tool to face reading is “Wu Guan” or facial features. She gave insights on how one is able to foretell a person’s fortune just based on the following features:

• Eye-brow: corresponds to health and social status. • Eye: corresponds to a person’s will power, good or bad personality. • Nose: corresponds to a person’s wealth and health. • Mouth: corresponds to a person’s luck and chances of meeting a benefactor. • Ear: corresponds to one’s life span and karma. The Master went on to say that our face has three sections which depict our fate at a certain age frame. For example, the upper section (from the forehead to the eye-brow), it governs the fate from age 15 to 30 while the middle section (eye-brow to the nose) reveals our fate from age 31 to 50 and lastly, the lower section (nose to the chin) tells about the fate from age 51 and beyond! Jin Yong our Ninja Warrior in Sasuke Singapore SPGG member Chan Jin Yong recently participated in the much talked about Sasuke Singapore. Fission caught up with him to hear all about his experiences.

Fission: Give us a recount of your experience in Sasuke Singapore – describe the fun, challenges you faced.

Jin Yong: There were three (3) rounds of competition in the Sasuke Singapore. • Qualifying Round 1: It was more of a physical

endurance test to see who were the fastest few to grab the flag.

• Round 2: We had to clear Obstacles which required special techniques and strength within two minutes. • Round 3: We had to scale a 20-metre

tall Tower. It required very good arm strength to scale all the way up. With a time limit of just one minute, only the fastest participant was given the honour to represent Singapore in Japan. Round 2 was essentially the essence of Sasuke Singapore. It was very challenging as it required both techniques and physical strength to get through. As I had experience with the trampoline during my secondary school days, this gave me the advantage over the many other competitors who failed at this obstacle. The main challenges I faced was the Wrap Wall and the Tower. I was not able to find the right time to jump and ended up sliding down twice, but still managed to get up with my third try. However, during the scaling of the Tower, I climbed up in a spiral movement which caused my safety rope to entangle with the climbing rope and when the safety rope was pulled to tension; my climbing rope got pulled up as well. When my arms got tired, I wanted to use my legs to help, but by then, I had no ropes beneath to support me. During this struggle, I exceeded the time limit of 1 minute. There were only two finalists who didn’t complete this rope within the time limit and I was actually the worst!

Fission: Did you complete the obstacle to go to the next round? What was your timing & how far did you complete?

Jin Yong: I went all the way to the last round, but failed to complete it within time limit. The Qualifying round was carried out in batches of 8 and I was the first to grab the flag. During Round 2, my timing was 1 min 25 sec, together with 3 others. The main objective was to complete it so as to proceed to the Tower challenge, so timing wasn’t our main concern. But there were confident people who dashed through the obstacles and completed it faster than us. Fission: What did you learn from all this?

Jin Yong: Being physically ready and confident to complete the course is not enough! There are always stronger and faster competitors around. I did not expect the Tower to be so taxing on the hands and arms. 18 < DEC 2012 - FEB 2013

Walking down Memory Lane at Fort Canning Park

With yet another bus load of 40 participants on Sunday, 4 November, we set off to Fort Canning Park for a brisk walking session with our humorous guide Steven from Summer Foot Prints! Our first stop was The Fort Canning Centre which interestingly was the barracks of the British army before, but it has now been converted into a visitor centre, retaining most of its exterior design. At our second stop - Trees of the Fort, Steven explained that Fort Canning Hill was the first Botanic Gardens in Singapore before the current one was built! Moving on, we headed off to the Fort Wall – where an entrance was built on each side of The Fort Wall so that thorough checks could be carried out within behind the doors before the people were allowed to enter into Fort Canning Hill. We later stopped by the replica of Raffles’ House, where Sir Stamford Raffles stayed when he resided in Singapore as it gave him a bird’s eye view of the harbour. Our knowledgeable guide went on to explain that during those days, trading was the main source of income for Singapore and this had allowed Raffles to keep an eye on the ships coming in and out of the harbour. The same lighthouse and flag pole can still be found on Fort Canning Hill. We ended off the historical trail with a photo taking session in front of The Fort Gate and The Fort Canning Centre with big smiles!

Bowling Friendly with Singapore Swimming Club Fifteen enthusiastic bowlers from Singapore Swimming Club (SSC) and SPGG came together on Saturday, 6 October to pit their skills against each other in a friendly game at SPGG’s Bowling Alley. A very close match followed, with SPGG emerging 13-12 victors! The Bowling Section is actively planning a series of such friendlies to foster interaction with other clubs in Singapore. SPGG bowlers can look forward to more matches next year.
