A Great Start to the Lunar New Year! Singapore Polytechnic Graduates’ Guild
President’s Thoughts Dear Fellow Member, I am delighted to announce that Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will be at SPGG as our Guest of Honour on Fri, 1 Apr at 7.30pm for our SPGG Dialogue on ‘What is Singapore’s Future?’.
Patron Mr. Chan Soo Sen
This is a rare opportunity to meet up close with SM Goh at SPGG and have an interactive and stimulating dialogue with him, so don’t miss it! Seats are limited, hurry and reserve them before they are fully booked! Remember, reservations are on a first-come-first-served basis. I must say that the new Lunar Year – the Year of the Rabbit – has taken off on a promising note and we can all expect more good things to come this new year at SPGG! For a start, we had a memorable Lo Hei Luncheon at the Carnation Room on the auspicious 7th day of the Lunar New Year – on 9th Feb. I wish to thank our Guest of Honour and Patron of SPGG Chan Soo Sen for gracing the occasion, and all our distinguished guests, in particular the Deputy Chairman of the Singapore Polytechnic Board of Governors Bill Chang York Chye, and SP Principal Tan Hang Cheong for joining us in this yearly, traditional celebration. On the 18th of Feb, we had the privilege of our Honorary Member Peter Chen delivering a talk on the ‘Lessons & Values of Yesteryears’. The sharing was so touching that it moved some of our audience to tears at some point in time. He drew from his two books on his late father’s literary works to highlight the lessons and traditional values that stood out from the writings, and these are as applicable today in modern Singapore, as they were a generation ago during the era of social and political changes in “Nanyang”. Rest assured, my fellow Executive Committee Members and I, together with the Management and staff will continue in our efforts to spice up the activities at the Guild and work towards our Vision of making SPGG ‘A Club of Distinction’. In our endeavour to make SPGG a better place for all, we have recently invited Mr Alex Neo Teck Kwee, Mr Chow Wai Weng, Mr Gerald Ng Ti Lui and Ms Lily He Su Ling to sit in the EXCO as Co-Opted Members. I wish to thank them for accepting our invitation and now look forward to their contributions in helping SPGG further fulfill our revitalised Vision and Mission statements. And now just before I sign off, I wish to let you know that SPGG turns 40 on 9 June, and the Guild is planning to celebrate it grandly later this year! We will keep you posted on the details when finalised.

As part of its overall efforts and strategies to improve its service levels to Members, SPGG has recently embarked on a productivity drive among its staff. Many may question its relevance to an organisation like SPGG. This is where the difference lies. SPGG is a membership-based organisation. As such, it provides a good range of membership products and services. In the commercial world, it would not be far from wrong to classify it under the service industry or at least one of its sub-sets. Herein lies immense potential for productivity improvements and growth. We not only want growth, we want to sustain growth as well. This cannot be achieved without the ability to optimise labour, capital, work practices and innovation to achieve greater output. This is what productivity improvements and growth is all about. This is the first time that such a productivity improvement drive among staff has been initiated. It would not be easy as we need to allay staff concerns and fears that it is a drive to make them work harder. Productivity improvements and growth is the basis for sustainable growth for the economic well-being of SPGG. It would enhance organisation effectiveness which will translate into sustainable enhancements of membership services and staff well-being as well in the long run. Line Managers and Supervisors have been briefed and challenged to rally their staff behind this productivity improvement drive - Never underestimate the positive impact of staff suggestions and ideas for productivity improvements, no matter how small they may be. To quote Marianne Williamson in her book - A Return to Love, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure… We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?” Having embarked on it, this productivity drive will not be a one-time effort or exercise. It will be a continuous one with the aim of making productivity improvements second nature in our work-life habits.

Lo Hei Luncheon Dressed in their festive best, more than 80 guests from our alma mater, Singapore Polytechnic, reciprocal clubs and close associates, joined our Members in our Lo Hei Celebration at SPGG on Wed, 9 Feb. Guest of Honour on this auspicious 7th Day of the Lunar New Year was our Patron Chan Soo Sen. Just as Mr Chan stepped into the Guild at 12 noon, the lion dance troupe from our alma mater took centre stage at the Front Lobby, lending a truly celebrative air to the occasion as the ‘lions’ pranced about nimbly to ground-shaking drumbeats and clashing cymbals. Among the many significant tasks performed, definitely the greatest crowd-pleaser was when the ‘lions’ transformed the neatly arranged mandarin oranges and vegetables (cai qing) into an auspicious Chinese character made of orange slices. Inside the Carnation Room, President Jimmy Lim delivered an encouraging speech. Mr Lim thanked everyone for their constant support, particularly our alma mater, SP for “lending us a hand in our concerted efforts to make SPGG a home for all our undergraduates and graduates”. Soon, everyone was joyously participating in the lo hei, after the emcee had declared auspicious good tidings with each ingredient that was poured onto the Fa Cai Yu Sheng dish. A breathtaking 45-minute Gu Zheng performance by New Town Secondary School followed and it kept the guests entertained while they were being served a 5-course lunch. Revelry continued when Mr Choy from Choy Brothers Opera Troupe gave an exhilarating performance as he changed many faces in split seconds that left many of us in awe! Face Changing Performer Mr Choy

Lessons & Values of Yesteryears
Our Honorary Member Peter Chen captivated us with his late father’s Words of Wisdom in his inspiring talk at SPGG recently SPGG was honoured to have our Honorary Member Peter Chen share with us an inspiring and enriching talk on ‘The Lessons and Values of Yesteryears’, relating to his late father’s literary works from his two books, ‘A Scholar’s Path’ and ‘Lychee Fragrance’ on Fri, 18 Feb at the Grand Ballroom. The former Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Patron of the Guild from 1997-2009, had in fact his audience practically glued to their seats throughout the evening with his heart-warming stories which even made tears roll down for some. In a nutshell, he categorised the teachings from the poems into five sections namely Familial Love, Care, Concern, Friendship & Reflections – each representing a set of emotions that most sojourners harboured and would have articulated if they could.
“We may forget the words but lessons and values remain for today.”
Mr Chen also shared with us a number of meaningful and sentimental values that were captured in these two books and how these lessons and values could be applied in today’s modernised world.
Reminiscing his school days, Mr Chen remembered his father telling him not to forget his mother tongue and the only way to stay rooted to his mother tongue was to constantly chat up his friends in Chinese. With his room mate being Malay, the Elder Mr Chen advised Mr Chen to always pursue other learning opportunities. In this sense, learn Malay as it would come in handy in the future. Every parent wishes his/her daughter to be of equal status as their other half. In ‘A Scholar’s Path’, Mr Chen shared a beautiful poem titled, “Wedding Poem Admonition to Mei Yu” that his father wrote to his daughter, teaching values that she can bring along to her marital home and do her parents proud. Here’s a touching excerpt from the ‘Wedding Counsel’.
President Jimmy Lim (right) and 1st t Vice President Hoe Lye Soon (centre), the host of the evening, presenting a token of appreciation to Mr Chen (left).

(11) Wedding poem admonition to Mei Yu (1957) lines 13-20
“Although we come from a poor family We do not seek either work or glory. If my daughter is not a lady of leisure, That’ll be an honour of great measure. You’re born with a pair of hands and a brain. How could you and a man be not the same? There’s no gender difference in the workplace Inferiority complex you should all erase.” Mr Peter Chen with his wife
While Mr Chen was overseas studying, his mother would constantly wonder if he was doing alright. In the letter written by his father, ‘ Mother’s Love’ – he shared with Mr Chen the enormity of a mother’s love. What triggers off this emotional and touching sentiment of a mother’s love? Allow me to highlight a small excerpt from the letter. “In order to develop, it is inevitable for a young man to travel afar. On his own, he can look after himself better than under the protection for his parents. But your Mother could not but imagine herself to be omnipotent and worries about everything for you. Only now do I know is the essence of a Mother’s Love!” In a short poem on Friendship, “ We’ve known each other more than twenty years. A lofty rank and lowly position are never barriers. I suddenly hear you’re soon moving on promotion; I’m upset we’ll part but happy on your elevation” – we understand the valuable lesson that friendship disregards rank. It does not matter if one’s rich and the other, poor.
us by Mr Chen, one may ponder, where have all these values gone to in this generation? Children these days are more rebellious, stubborn, and do not heed their parents’s teachings. We encourage everyone to read these two books. It can be used as a valuable teaching tool to the children of today. For those who are well versed in the Chinese Language, “Lychee Fragrance” would be more enjoyable as it allows readers to better understand the author’s intentions and savour the essence of his emotions. And to those who may not be well-versed in the Chinese Language, the collection of poems in ‘A Scholar’s Path’ explains the allusions and their sources, allowing more readers to enjoy the beauty of the Chinese language and literature. Both books reflect much of Mr Peter Chen’s father’s literary passion, his relationship with his family and friends, his philosophy of life and not to mention his unattained ideals and ambitions. More importantly, they show his pure and irresponsible joy when indulging in Chinese poetry.
Through all these lessons and values of yesteryears that were generously shared with

Career Outlook in 2011 a FENG SHUI Perspective The Metal Rabbit has just hopped upon our lives in 2011 and how would it affect us? From a FENG SHUI angle, one must understand that with each year, comes a set of energies that will act and interact with our personal attributes. This is taken from the year of birth one is born and following the system of multi-layering wisdom of Chinese Metaphysics, the interaction between the current year’s energies will tell a lot about how they are going to affect you on first impression, namely your social impact with the world at large and the people you will meet. While this forms about a quarter of the full picture when compared to a full charting analysis of your Four Pillars (popularly known as Eight Characters Reading in Chinese), it nevertheless will offer you great guidance in many areas of the opportunities or lack of them when you are counting on the best steps to take in your quest for jobs, career, relationships and wealth. This is a general guide towards a successful 2011 and for more details on how you may improve on it, look us up at www.hofs88.com. For this issue, let’s touch on your area of work.

It does not look like a joy ride. For those already working, there may be meddlesome colleagues to add to your woes. The trick is to stick to rules and regulations. Your bosses and direct superiors are not helping too. So, go get someone you can trust and ask for help and advice. If you are working in front-line and dealing with clients, keep your cool and watch your speech.

While it is not going to be extremely fortunate for you, there are reasons to celebrate as 2011 may bring about some promotions and reward s. 3 Eye-Opening Mr Clayton Miller giving an overview on energy efficiency strategies Dr Kang Kok Hin sharing insights on Facilities Management
SPGG kicked off the year with an eyeopening and informative Networking Nite, featuring 3 speakers on Fri, 14 Jan, to the applause of some 80 participants. Jointly organised with the Singapore Chapter of ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers) – the 6th Networking Nite was themed to suit the trending Green Efficiencies. The night started out with Dr Kang Kok Hin, Guest Lecturer at various higherlearning institutes like NUS, NTU and BCA Academy, sharing his vast experience in Facilities Management.
Talks On Business Efficiencies 6th SPGG/ASHRAE NETWORKING NITE
He first introduced the concepts of Facilities Management to the floor and then the strategies for sustainability. The art of Sustainable Facilities Management lies in balancing People, the Environment and Cost. Dr Kang left us with the quote “The freedom of use is not the license to abuse”. Mr Winson Wee, our very own SP Graduate, Vice President of Client Engagement & Projects of his company – Reachfield IT Solutions – introduced his company and the solutions they provide for businesses. Mr Wee also spoke about Entrepreneurship, where Passion, Perseverance and Patience were 3 of the many key takeaways for those toying with the idea of delving into start-ups. Mr Clayton Miller tied both ends together as he was both an Entrepreneur and also an ASHRAE Member! He shared the ways that ASHRAE was able to help Engineers. The bustling night ended with 5 lucky winners returning home that night with prizes from SPGG and ASHRAE! Mr Nazir (Tan) Amir, Mr Ananthan, Mr Toe Oo Zaw, Mr Norman Ng and Ms Florence Chan walked away with SPGG F&B Vouchers and Swiss Army Knives!
The event would not have been successful without the participation of IET – the Institute for Engineers and Technologists; we send our thanks to them. We hope that all participants managed to expand their contacts, and join us for the many more networking nights to come!
7th SPGG-IET Networking Nite The next networking night will be on Fri, 15 April and we welcome anyone who would like to share their views or even present a presentation to join us by contacting Ms Roopy at roopy@spgg.org.sg.

s l a i c e p S s a Christm It was a Christmas celebratory mood for SPGG members and their families when they participated in the SPGG Christmas Light-Up on 18 December last year. Our Christmas tree was decked up with vibrant ornaments and tags that were wishes from the youth at Life Community Services Society (LCSS).
Christmas Tree Light Up Ceremony & Official Opening of Wellness Centres
Hon Assistant General Secretary Vincent Lim with the Bursary Recipients
SPGG President Jimmy Lim kicked off the programme with his welcome speech following which the Christmas carol strollers stole the limelight and filled the happy atmosphere. 18 December also marked the Official Opening day of our newly renovated Wellness Centres which underwent a half-a-million-dollar renovation from 23 Aug to 12 Nov.
Bursary Awards 2011 This year’s Christmas Special was exceptionally sweet for 28 bursary recipients. Honorary Assistant General Secretary, Vincent Lim, who is the Chairman of Student & Member Welfare, handed out a total bursary value of $10,300 to 5 SPGG Members’ children and 23 students from our alma mater, Singapore Polytechnic after offering his well wishes and words of encouragement on their studies.
Santa, could you pls sculpt a balloon for me too?
Meticulously orchestrated by the SP String Ensemble, their enchanting music pieces and the Christmas carols sung by the 2-piece strollers kept everyone in high spirits throughout the evening. Professor Messy, a science magician, thrilled the children with various experiments and tricks while a roving Santa Claus gave out sculpted balloons and little treats to the children who squealed and crowded around him. As far as the little ones were concerned, it may have been mid December but Christmas had arrived! gleefully posing with Santa

It was a Rockin’ Wild Wild West Night
Countdown 2011
It was a night of pure fun and entertainment at our Countdown 2011 party, themed, “ Wild Wild West” . To add colour to the night, 4 of our Executive Committee Members, came sportingly dressed in colourful costumes with President Jimmy Lim as the Head Sheriff, 2nd Vice President Ng Hoo Yin as a Red Indian Chief, Honorary Assistant General Secretary Vincent Lim and Honorary Assistant Treasurer Christopher Soh as cowboys!
President Jimmy Lim delivering his welcome speech
Some of the participants too arrived in their wild west outfits, all ready to saddle up and ride their way into 2011. Kick-starting the programme was President Jimmy Lim’s ‘Welcome Speech’, which was quickly followed by the serving of a sumptuous 8-course dinner. Our lively and quick witted emcee, Shak, kept the energy level high throughout the night with sporting Members and Guests gamely participating in the games he orchestrated. Live band performance by the Matthew & the Mandarins carried off soon after and saw a couple of guests swooning to the tunes on the dance floor.

Fabulous Norris from the Tiffany’s Show entertained the crazy crowd with some jokes and games. In another exciting game, “So You Think You Can Line Dance”, 3 groups were blindfolded and were challenged to dance in synchronized steps to win! Popular Korean Song “Nobody Nobody” saw a group of Korean guests rush to the dance floor to groove to their favourite song. Much less aware that they were doing a co-ordinated dance, many thought it was one of the performances for the night! Sooner than we thought, everyone else was getting into the mood to welcome the new year with lots of enthusiasm. Lucky winners also walked away with lucky draw prizes.
